I believe I have a couple of aluminum ones around that I pulled out of pnp
cars, those are supposed to be better I believe. I know they have those kits
that replace the servo completely but I really like keeping them stock.

The bakelite housing also tends to crack, and the gears in the top mechanism
can strip out, then the "wiper" won't move.

I agree they do work really well when setup correctly. I put a new servo
in my 116 about 9 years ago (new from MB, plastic body) and it’s still
perfect.
I think this is in part due to the more protected location in a 116. 123s
have them mounted low by the exhaust manifold. Plus, when I

They actually work pretty well when functional. The big issue are the seals in
the coolant valve portion, as they’ll leak as it ages and crud up the insides.
