live with it if it's small and the price was right.

Get it, unless it's totally junk. Our old South Bend 10K lathe is very
useful for lots of things, even though it's mostly worn out. I need to
rebuild it, but I don't want to stop the airplane projects long enough to
do it. I just make do, and it's close enough for the work I've been doing
with it.

Yes, wind can carry a lot of energy, look at those big spinny things that are
supposed to be the future of energy generation.

Anyone who has tried to carry sheets of plywood on a windy day also has learned
this.

Anchor it well, especially if it is in an open area.
A number of years ago a friend out at the lake decided to build a shed
and store boats for summer residents through the winters.
He put up his shed and filled it with boats. One day a bit of a storm
went through and it lifted his whole shed and tossed it into the bush
behind where it had stood.

I think it must have been just posts standing on top of concrete pads.
Fortunately, none of the boats were damaged and he was able to salvage
most of the material and rebuild it.

Re: [MBZ] Building a car port?

2023-01-09 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I bought some panels from Lowes to put on this shed, 2ft wide or so by
10' or maybe 12' I forget.  Whatever you do it needs to be anchored down
somehow, esp there where you get some decent storms.  This thing I built
survived some good blows we have had, not much to it anyway so it's not
like it is some major expense but it has held up OK.  Your posts should
be 8' ft apart if you want to get a car in them, 7' would be tight but
probably OK.

That metal you got on the roof looks about like what I have. I have something

guess I could build it off of the side of the shop and the back side could be
anchored to the wall of the shop. As long as it was anchored into the steel
supports I would think it would be strong enough?

Re: [MBZ] Building a car port?

2023-01-09 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I wouldn't sink posts. That whole wood in dirt thing just doesn't work for me.
I'd go with pillar blocks, as used in my woodshed:

http://formicapeak.com/~jimc/Mog/mogdirt/shedframe2.jpg

(Or, better, sink sonotubes below the frost line and pour concrete to above
the splash zone, and sink saddles into that before it cures. Then build
above, in whatever rustic style you like. (See above.) The side wings on
my family's barn were done this way, and are 70-80 years old now.)

The result can be fairly attractive:
