I recall a television program when I was young where the protagonist

This is the kind of car that begs restraint. Keep the patina and don't try
to perfectify it or you will go down a rabbit hole.

I’ll say this about that:

I nearly soiled myself when I saw this car. It’s beautiful. Not perfect,
nowhere near it, and not nice enough (to me) to command the current ask on this
venue.

A few observations:

Restore the interior. With new leather and carpet, it will be very close, if
not in, the range you now seek.

Have the wheel covers properly painted with matching paint.

At least refinish the door and windshield wood trim. This is not a major
undertaking for a DIY’er, and not terribly expensive for a professional to do,
either.

For a $26,000 car of any kind, clean up that engine compartment and dress
cables/wiring. Mask and paint the radiator top tank. Easy/cheap to do, makes it
look so much nicer.

Again, beautiful car, so, so close to being Very Nice. If it was only fuel
injected with a stick it would be perfect!

I saw a massive white ML 350 BLUETEC SUV in the Costco parking lot today
with a THIRD ROW seat. Adjacent to it was a smaller ML 250 Bluetec SUV.
Both are extremely RARE in these parts (DMV).

[MBZ] OT: Another win for synthetic oil

2024-02-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't know if you guys remember the ASV snowmobile trail grooming machine.

This little fella: https://photos.app.goo.gl/FeHCrBiQsoafrPZD8

It's always been a struggle to get it started when its cold out. Best bet has
been the block heater but sometimes thats not practical.

Well last fall we had it in the shop for some other repairs and I figured we
ought to change the oil since I'd never done it and I've been running the
machine off and on since 2015.

I put in Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic. The engine is a 1996 John Deere 4050T, big
old 4 cylinder diesel. Deere actually says 0w40 for winter use but Deere oil is
really expensive and I got 5 gallons of Rotella on sale. Its still expensive
but when you only change the oil once a decade or so its not so bad.

Anyway we haven't had enough snow to groom yet this season but buddy Ben used
the machine to plow his driveway a couple times with the machine and reports
that it fires right up, even at 15F, no major struggles.

I had been told "We tried synthetic oil, it didn't help" but I think either
that was a fib (Go away kid, you bother me) or the oil they tried was 15w40 and
still pretty darn thick. The cold starting problem has always been that the
engine cranked slow...

Re: [MBZ] 240D engines

2024-02-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Did you need a different controller for pencil plugs or could you just rewire
them?

When I bought Dwight's '78 240D it had been cleverly converted to pencil plugs
by installing pencil plugs and adding a button on the dash that triggered a
Ford starter solenoid. Unfortunately whoever had wired it still series wired
the plugs and with only 10ga wire I don't think the forward most one was
heating up much. Used to have to hold the button for 30-40 seconds for good
starting.

I made new wires from the relay to each plug, still in 10ga and a heavy, iirc
6ga wire from the relay to the battery. After that one melted on the exhaust
manifold and made an exciting show of sparks I added an inline fuse too, well
after I replaced the wire.

Went from 30-40 seconds of preheat required to 10-15...

IIRC, the middle of 1982.

You can (could) get pencil plugs to replace loop plugs, along with the
new controller to run them.
