[MBZ] Scary situation
I went down in the GL450 to the store just a half mile down the road to get a few things, come out and was leaving and smelled something burning as I was driving out of the parking area. Figured it was from the car in front of me, brakes stuck or something. Then the odor gets stronger and I see smoke blowing from the dash vents and it smells REALLY bad. Like a LOT of smoke. ohshit. Turned off the fan so no more smoke coming in the vents. I figure I can get home quick and check it out (probably not the best choice...) but then I get on the road and there is a backup almost to the shopping center due to a tree falling on the road and maybe a wreck and I am sitting there and see smoke coming out of the hood vent. ohshit. I'm sitting at a dead stop less than 1/2mile from the Vast Estate so decide to turn into a driveway across the road and check it out. Popped the hood and see smoke coming from the AC airbox which is on the firewall on passenger side. The hood vent allows air into it. There was smoke down below and some on top. Below is a main power cable coming to the jump point and on top was some sort of sensor. I was hoping there wasn't a short in that as that could be kinda serious. I popped open the airbox (and the cabin air filter was in there, which is filthy, put that on my list) and nothing in there, so I feel the sensor on top and it is very hot. I popped the connector off and it was melted. Popped the sensor out and it was completely melted too. I guess something inside it shorted out. I drove on home then, no smoke, yay. It is a cabin air quality sensor, $92 new from Autohauz. There are a few used sensors listed on ebay but they're all outside the US and shipping is crazy. I guess I need to hit the junkyard and see if I can find one. I don't think they are the same as on a 164 ML but I need to check, I might have one. I guess I need to hit a junkyard and see if I might find one for a coupla $. Anyway, that was kinda scary, I kept expecting flames to erupt from the dash or something, maybe the fan motor (which is buried way up in there) was shorted out or something. I have never had something like that happen. I need to put a fire extinguisher in the GL, I bought a couple a few months ago and they are sitting on the porch not being particularly useful. -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
