Update. I went over to see they guy this morning and he put it up on the rack for me. He had driven the car and looked things over, noticing a number of fuel and vacuum irregularities, but heard the creaking and addressed none of them. He will not do work on a car with a cracked frame rail.

Not to worry on that score. And I'll look pained no matter what they say. The MB guy thinks that the only safe repair is to replace the rail in total as it supports the front end of the car, but stopped short of saying that is the only answer here. That needs to be decided by a welder. BillR

Talked to the guys at the welding shop, and we are pretty sure the problem was caused by an accident at some time in the past. They said under normal driving I should not have any problems with it. It drives well, and next week we stat with all the other stuff that needs adjusting. BillR
