Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: Forgive my ignorance, I brought my iPhone to my Verizon plan, does that mean I'm locked into a contract? Assuming I stay with Verizon I see no reason to upgrade my iPhone, it works well enough. How old is your iPhone? If it's 4 or 4s, you can use it with Tracfone's BYOP service if it's in Verizon's database already. If it has a 4G/LTE radio in it (iPhone 5), you probably can't activate it on Tracfone. The big sticking point is it has to be a phone that was once used on a Verizon postpaid plan. http://tracfonewireless.com/byop/ BYOP gives you triple minutes, triple texts, and triple data. For example, if you buy a $20 / 60 minute pin card, on a BYOP phone you'd get 180 minutes of talk time, 180 text messages, and 180 MB of data. Lately I've been able to get the 200 minute cards for $20 (normally $40), so for $20 I get 600 minutes and 600 texts, and 90 days added to my expiration date. I don't use data on my flip phone, so the data just accumulates towards the day that I might swap my service over to a smart phone. The samples I took last year look just like the ones I took in 2006 and say the oil is good to at least 10k in my 190D. The talk I heard was shortly after the Castrol Syntec legal actions in the 1990s. Once Castrol/Quaker State got the FTC to back off on requiring them to actually put synthesized molecules in the bottles labeled 'synthetic', then everybody started copying their business model. The funny thing was that in 1992, black bottle Syntec was marketed as a premium product, sold for $5 a quart when M1 was $4 a quart and it was somewhat common to see M1 on sale for $2.99. I got Syntec for less than M1 after rebate in 1992 or 1993, found that me car suddenly 'used' oil with the Syntec in the sump. Had to add a quart after 2000 miles or so. Took out the 5w50 Castrol, put in 5W30 M1, and consumption went back to 1/2 qt in 7500 miles. At the time I wondered if the Syntec cooked down or evaporated, and I never used it again. With the FTC action a few years later, I was convinced that heat caused a reduction in volume of Syntec that didn't happen with M1. When I look back on that $0.999 premium gas and $3.99 Mobil One, I realize what a bargain it would be to get the same quality M1 today for $23 per 5 quarts when premium gas is $3.75. I saw a 'field find' older Jetta TDI on CL this spring, had way over 200k mi on it, surrounded by unmowed grass. His starting price was something like $3500 or $3800, and I don't think I ever saw him ask less than $3k for it. Unfortunately, it seems like a 10 year old CDI has as big a premium over a e320 as a TDI has over a plain VW. And the rare turbo W210s don't seem to be in any hurry to go under $5k for a decent one, more like 7-8k most of the time and with pretty big odometers. Just my personal opinion, but nobody hooks up a 'transmission flush' machine to any car I own. I have no trust in those machines and less trust in the people wielding them. If I want to change the fluid without a TC drain plug, I do something I saw in a factory Ford manual in the 1990s: Drain the pan and change the filter, throw a gallon of fresh fluid in the pan, unhook a cooling line at the radiator and let it idle in park until the clean fluid starts coming out of the hose. I guess it is 2 questions: Should I tow a very light sailboat with this car? and my real question: What sort of hardware should I put on it to be able to tow, perhaps a brand and source? I would like one that has a removable ball so when I am not towing I can take most of it off of the car. thank you in advance! IIRC, the chassis is rated to tow 750kg without brakes or 1250, maybe 1500kg with brakes. If you approach those weights, you WILL notice that you've got something back there. I used to tow my Hobie Cat (about 700lb complete with trailer) with a bumper hitch on a Plymouth Horizon. I felt safer when I later found an old custom hitch that had a couple of bolts in the spare tire well in addition to the bumper, I don't think that bumper only hitch was intended for aluminum bumpers. When the empty car weighs 3x as much as the loaded trailer, towing is a very minor deal. I've seen pics of handbuilt (welded) 1 1/4 receivers that you unbolt the bumper shocks from the body and put the hitch between the shocks and the body, usually on S123 wagons. I'd gladly tow 1000lb with one of these. No idea what it would cost to have one made by a custom hitch shop. There were factory hitches sold in europe with a very nice forged ball/extension, but the 50mm ball doesn't exactly match 1 7/8 or 2 USA hitches. Curt still makes a custom hitch, bolts to bumper and floor, lists for about $300, but you can buy it on eBay for $150 shipped, might be cheaper elsewhere. It's a 1500lb class I hitch. Hard to find anything other than class I in USA for Mercedes passenger cars, because MBUSA does not give the same towing ratings that the same chassis have in Europe. http://www.curtmfg.com/part/11614 Mitch. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. I always liked the 2610 gram triple beam Ohaus. (need accessory weights to go over 610g) http://www.ebay.com/itm/OHAUS-Triple-Beam-Balance-Ink-Scale-/121421705001?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item1c454c2f29 It pivots on what look to be agate bearings. The factory shipping carton held the pan up on a styrofoam platform IIRC so that the bearings didn't get hammered. If I bought a used one to have shipped to me, I'd make them put pieces of rubber hose or something over the steel triangles that sit on the stone bearings. Another thought is a Harvard Trip Balance. I bought one years ago because it was only $35, but never used it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OHAUS-HARVARD-TRIP-BALANCE-SCALE-2-KG-5-LBS-CAPACITY-/281374666304? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
