[MBZ] 400E

2022-10-16 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I looked at this 92 400E today. Guy bought it at estate sale after it had sat
for 6yr and did some kinda hack work on it. Body and interior mostly very nice.
Seats look new, smells new. No rust, underneath and whole car actually very
clean. Engine ran really bad. Needs some work which is mostly fuel and intake
and hoses and ignition stuff. Couldn’t drive it to check out trans and steering
etc. tires looked original, dry and cracked. I’m gonna LOBALL the guy tomorrow
and see what he says. Could be a very cool car.

[MBZ] OT Electrical question for little welder

2022-03-19 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

This welder I got will run on 110V or 220V
Input Current:  45A@110V,  30A@220v

It looks like guys just plug them into a regular 20A 110V plug on that
input.

The thing also has a short adapter for 220V that goes from a standard
3-prong 110V female end (and doesn't have the wide/narrow flat blades)
to a 50A 220V male (even though it says it only needs 30A) if you want
to use it on 220V for a bit more output.  I can get a 50A socket

https://www.amazon.com/ELEGRP-Mounting-Receptacle-Straight-Grounding/dp/B09225GPNC

to wire into a feed off a box (30A breaker I guess).

I have never seen a 45A 110V socket or cable or whatever so I'm not sure
what that is about.  And a 30A 220V plug/socket is different from this
50A plug.  It's all a bit weird.

Here's the listing for the unit
https://yeswelder.com/products/mig-welder-mig205

Thoughts on the 45A 110V or just go with a regular 20A circuit and see
what happens?  I guess the worst thing is it will just trip a breaker.

driver seat has a tear but not unusual. 2 nearly new Michelins, other 2 are
about half. Headlights need buffing. Quite decent looking car.

Put the scanner on it, trans was showing 4 codes which I cleared, then drove
the car. It is in limp mode but otherwise ran and drove fine. Scanned it again
and showed the TCM (called a VGS or something) was uncommunicative. This is a
722.9 and is quite a bit more complicated than the 722.6, the TCM is part of
the conductor plate. I need to learn about it.

Guy was driving on the interstate when it went into limp mode, no warning. I
guess it could be the TCM fried or maybe some other electrical aspect. I will
find out. Transmission shop said it needed a whole new trans and some other
stuff at $7k.

I talked him and management out of wasting time and a decent car by parting it
out.

$900

Re: [MBZ] Way OT: Pulls like a freight train

2020-11-03 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
too funny.  This guy who had the sawmill (before he got crushed by a
load of oak railroad ties that fell off a flatbed) told me he and a
bunch had come down to SC after hurricane Hugo I guess, and worked down
here for several months, he knew where I lived.  They get around as long
as the English will drive them somewhere.

When I was in college we went up to some bar just over the border in
Michigan (18 drinking at the time) and it was really funny, these Amish
girls would show up in their Amish garb, go into the restroom and change
into mini-skirts and makeup then come out and party.  They were totally
hot too, I was thinking about hitting on a couple but my buddies
dissuaded me.  I have always regretted that decision...

Yeah, never missed a meal when I had to call on our Amish customers.

Funny, as there’s a big community of Amish and Mennonites in Bradenton, about
45 minutes south of here. They do all the requisite furniture building and have
a couple of big “family style” restaurants that also sell pies and other
goodies. The sort of funny part is that it’s a big vacation spot for the
northern Amish, who come down in the winter in van loads and can be seen
walking on the beach in full Amish regalia. Just sort of a weird contrast when
you see the “Englishmen/women” on the beach in their bikinis and swimsuits with
a bunch of Amish people sprinkled in between.

Re: [MBZ] MAKE REASONABLE OFFER NEED GONE

2020-04-18 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I sent him back a message saying it is basically a parts car, I wouldn't
want to insult him with a low offer (well, I wouldn't mind doing
that...) but that is kinda where it is given the issue.  I ran the VIN
and all these 06s pretty much were affected up to a certain engine
number, which this car falls into the range.   Looks like there was some
kind of class action on it that expired in 2015.

I sent him a note, no response yet, I'll let him sit on it the idea of a
LOBALL OFFER

You’re overthinking this...

The “codes” or errors are snapshots of faults that have occurred in the past or

Some faults are “soft” in that if they only happen a few times and don’t
reoccur they go away. This would be like the CEL you get if your gas cap isn’t
on tightly, for example.

Faults that meet or exceed a frequency thats not deemed acceptable are “hard”
faults that don’t go away on their own and need to be cleared by the SDS. And
example of this might be powering up the car while the airbag is disconnected,
which results in a hard fault in the SRS system. It may mean that device or
system is no longer functional.

Re: [MBZ] ML 722.6 connector leaking

2019-06-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I looked at another coupla vids of replacing the conductor plate, it
seems like the electrical connector thingie is what seals it up, one
o-ring into the conductor plate electrical socket and the other seals
against the transmission body and the fluid is contained between the 2
o-rings.

I'm gonna drop the pan and just go ahead and replace the fluid and
filter, at least that will be done.

The car is surprisingly clean underneath, I guess maybe he detailed it
before he tried to sell it.  :Looks like a bit of PS fluid dripping but
nothing too bad, there are some new tranny cooler hoses in there, the
vehicle looks pretty well maintained (aside from this issue).

sprayed contact cleaner in there too but it seems to keep leaking out
fluid and it is not particularly clean either.  I'm wondering if this
guy I bought it from actually changed the conductor plate like he
said.  I'm not quite sure why it would keep leaking. Looking at pics
of the conductor plate I don't see how it seals up against the
transmission body where it goes out the hole, there don't appear to be
any orings in there.

Any thoughts on why it is leaking out the transmission hole?  Are the
o-rings in the connector (I have a new one but the old one looked OK)
what keeps things from leaking?

I don't think it wicked up the wires but I will pull the TCU and look
at it too after I sort this aspect out.

The fluid looked dirty and nasty, I'm wondering if I should just drop
the pan and drain out the fluid and pulled the valve body and take a
look at the conductor plate and see exactly what is going on?  I see
new ones plus filter, gasket and connector for $80 on Amazon, some
generic part I am thinking but since there are so many of these things
out there I guess it would be OK.  Although I do have a filter and
connector already, just the conductor plate is only $7 less.

As carmakers push ahead with self-driving vehicles, an Austrian aerospace
company and its Chinese partner showed off their pilot-less “flying taxi” for
the first time in Europe on Thursday.

The drone’s 16 propellers hummed loudly as it rose above the pitch at Vienna’s
Generali Arena, home to soccer club Austria Wien. The slim plane, which weighs
750 pounds, circled in the air briefly and came down within a few minutes.

The EHang 216, which can seat two passengers, has been tested comprehensively
and is essentially ready for mass production, said Derrick Xiong, co-founder of
Chinese drone maker EHang.

Joining the race for new autonomous aircraft services that do not require
runways, EHang entered a strategic partnership with Austria’s FACC, owned by
Chinese aerospace group AVIC, last year, aiming to offer short-haul services
for passengers, industrial equipment and urgent medical deliveries.

The drone can fly at up to 150 km per hour (90 mph) for almost half an hour,
FACC Chief Executive Officer Robert Machtlinger said. “It can travel between 50
and 70 kilometers depending on the payload.”

The passenger cabin is small, with leg room that taller passengers might find
less-than adequate, an Austrian photographer who took part in a demonstration
flight told Reuters.

FACC says it has already received several thousand orders for the $336,000
drone, with the highest demand in China.

Competitors working toward offering autonomous flying cars early in the next
decade range from aerospace giant Airbus to Uber and AeroMobil.

“Technically... urban mobility, flying without a pilot is possible, it’s not a
dream, it’s existing,” said Machtlinger. “What is hindering us to go into
larger volumes is regulation,” he added. A future legal framework for
autonomous flying vehicles should regulate communication with other planes and
helicopters and provide traffic rules, he said.

Austria supports international efforts to quickly establish the necessary
regulation, said transport minister Norbert Hofer.

“I hope that Austria will be the place where thousands of these drones, of
these air taxis will be built and I hope that very soon we will see a lot of
these air taxis in the air,” Hofer said.

If all four wheels (spheres) are connected together, I would think that if one

Re: [MBZ] OT fixing a light fixture, phenolic socket or porcelain? now LEDs

2018-12-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Yeah I've been putting the Costco bulbs in everywhere too, at least
lights that are not on dimmers.  The warm white gives a pleasant light.
I got some LED floods too, maybe 100W? they were pretty cheap for a 6
pack, while not rated "outdoors" the housings are plastic and say water
resistant or some such.  They put out really good bright light, I am
surprised.  The heavy glass halogens burn out quickly, those things
don't last despite what the boxes say, and are a lot more expensive.

In the kitchen fixtures I made I put in ceramic GU10 sockets (banggood)
and LED mini-floods (banggood too), I got 3 kinds of different color
temps and output.  Some of them have burned out now after 4 years, and
some blink, I guess it is the power supply circuits in them that fry,
whatever they are.  Anyway the bulbs were a lot cheaper than anything
else here, so I guess I can put up with changing them every now and
then, I bought a bunch of spares.  They are all really bright, if I turn
on any set (I have 4 banks around the kitchen) it is way brighter than
daylight, which I was kinda looking for in prepping and cooking.  I have
halogen GU10s in tracks on the high peaked ceiling to wash it, and some
recessed above one set of counters, they are pretty much enough for
anything else.  I ran a LED string about 25ft long on top of the
cabinets facing up to the little ceiling over them and under the loft
area, that was warm white LEDs too, and that looks nice as just sort of
a night light.

I bought a bunch of single RGB LEDs and Arduinos and remote controllers
I was going to build strips to put under the cabinets to light the
counters there, I never got them set up but I thought it would be kinda
cool to set different "mood" colors.  I ran some wiring to hook them
into switches that control some USB/power outlets that put out 2A on the
USB sockets, that's more than enough to run a whole string of them.  I
put Ethernet cable in the walls to connect them.  Maybe in my enforced
downtime I can get to that fairly passive project, I have all that stuff
in a project box somewhere.

I waited for years for LED bulbs to be made which will replace 100 Watt
incandescents. I recently discovered them at Costco: 120 VAC LED bulbs
which put out 1600 lumens made by FEIT. I think their part number is
CEOM100/930/4(N).

In illumining our "kitchen" area, we have substituted four LED bulbs,
drawing 70 W total for twelve F096/741/ECO bulbs labeled 52 W. That's
624 W for the bulbs -- who knows what it takes to run the ballasts!
If one guesses 20 W, the total for the fluorescents approaches 900 W,
more than an order of magnitude than the LED bulbs.

I am guessing the top hydraulics are inop given the o-ring repair kit in
the trunk, but I have not taken off the hard top and tried to cycle the
soft top, so nothing to report there.

I'll report back when I know more...

On a related matter, this girl really wants to get this car out of her

The flashing light in the top switch can mean any number of things, it may be
accompanied by a chime. If so, the top isn’t latched or the controller
“thinks” the top isn’t latched. This can be something as simple as a latch
microswitch on the top frame latches being out of adjustment or a controller
issue.

One question - is the roll bar down with the top in place? It should be.
You’ve also got “tilt” switches on the rear trailing arms that will cause the
roll bar to deploy if the angle of the car exceeds a preset amount, measured
somewhat crudely by the rear suspension geometry through those switches. For
example, if you jump a curb on one side of the car with the rear the roll bar
can deploy. It's pretty violent but not anything dangerous or I ordered a

I had put a new engine in it, which I pulled along with the tranny and
have in the garage, and gave the hulk to some guy I knew who was into
cars.  Engine had the TBI which was somewhat problematic toward the
end.  I found some app a guy in Finland or somewhere had made to run on
XP, along with a little circuit he designed you could tap into the ALDI
(I think that is what it was called) and read engine data in real time
on a laptop.  I did that a few times, it was kinda interesting, but
reprogramming the computer was a very involved thing.  A newer 4bbl or a

to do if I ever do something with the engine.  As I recall it would get

Re: [MBZ] OT: Alligator attack in SC

2018-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
As a reminder, Kiawah is home to over 600 alligators that live and
travel throughout all of Kiawah's ponds.

*Please remember:*
* Never feed, harass or approach an alligator. When people feed
alligators, they lose their fear of humans, creating a dangerous situation.
* Use extreme caution around ponds, stay away from pond edges, and never
swim or wade in island ponds.

* Keep pets away from pond edges at all times.

I was driving this thing last night and got the nannies to intervene a
coupla times on my spirited driving!  Even the radio volume started
sorta working better, so that is encouraging too!

An occasional squeak has started somewhere, sounds almost like a water
pump skreech, will have to check it out.

I think I'm gonna go out and put some vacuum on the AC and see if that
will hold.  It would be sweet to get some air BLOWING ICE COLD!

Speaking of AC, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to pull the dash on
the White Whale and replace all the vacuum pods so I can get cold air from
the center dash vent. Found an old thread by Dave M where he claims he can
R a 124 dash and replace the vacuum in about 5 hours. I really should
fix up the AC in my '95 E300 so I can drive that in the event that the job
takes me 5 days.

This weekend I’ll see if the AC will hold vac and try to get that BLOWING

I sent him an email to see where the car is and when I could look at
it.  For $300 or $400 it would probably be worth it for parts for the
dizzel if indeed the engine is locked.  Otherwise it might be some easy
fix the guy has no clue about.

BTW the cheap dizzel is running pretty good now, I've been driving it a
bit and thrashing it which it seems to like.

"...they were in competition at the time with the launch of the
minivan and, unfortunately, lost that battle."

The first minivan was introduced by Chrysler in 1984, and the S123
production ceased in 1985. Not exactly "competition"

"The self leveling suspension system has been removed ... so this
one will no longer be plagued with the leaking system issue.
Often owners would come out to find their car sitting on the
rear bumper one morning and it wouldn't go back up."

*sigh* The SLS is a _good_ system. Even with a total hydraulic
failure, the car does not "sit on the rear bumper". What he is
trying to promote as a major feature I consider to be a huge
detriment.

"... I had to have this car shipped to Oklahoma from Seattle, WA
because they are that difficult to find in good condition.

Oops. If he thinks this car is in good condition...

And the price - that is a BAT crazy price! The air conditioner
doesn't even blow ICE COLD.

" I would easily classify this car as average to good."

BZZZT!

Re: [MBZ] Movie quote

2017-10-12 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I happened to catch an interview with him a few months ago, on Tavis
Smiley I think, in which he said exactly that -- no way he could make
that movie these days, too many people would be "offended" and not
understand the satire involved.  To that point he made the observation
that the population was really getting dumb these days, back when it was
made, and it might have been the general tone of the times, everyone
"got it."

I think he was correct in his observations and assessment.

There is a steel mill up the coast a bit in a little town that has been
open/closed off an on.  It closed again a year or two ago, talk about
opening it again, but I don't think the numbers can work.  Plus the
little harbor is silting up and it would cost a lot to dredge it out to
get some reasonable ships in there as they used to.  I think they were
making some sort of specialty product, I forget, but they said foreign
competition (mostly chinee) was killing them.

Re: [MBZ] Airline disaster

2017-10-11 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
The aircraft was destroyed by a bomb in a radio.  The bomb was built my
Moomar Kaddafy's people.  It was in the luggage hold in a bag.  It went
off early due I think to some schedule delay for the flight, so that it
exploded over land not over open ocean. Within the last year or two was
a show on PBS, Frontline maybe, about tracking down the guys responsible
for organizing the whole thing.  I think the main  investigator was a
man whose sister? was killed on the plane.  He spent a lot of time on
the ground in Libya tracking down these guys.  One of them, who was
caught, was released on "compassion" grounds because he supposedly had
cancer.  Years later he was still doing quite well.

That one isn't available for public bidding, you need to be registered as a
licensed business or a foreign customer who's going to ship it out of the USA.

You can go through the sign-up process for free, then when you're logged in you can add
cars to your watchlist. When in your watchlist or on the search screen, you can check
"no license required" in the top section of the filter options on the left, and
watch 90% of the cars disappear.

If you try to bid on that car while logged in as an unlicensed bidder, it'll
take you to a 'find a broker' menu. You should be able to find a company that
will set you up to bid under their license and process the title paperwork for
$200-300. Watch out for some of the brokers who list their fee at $100-200,
then when you go to their web site and read the fine print there are other fees
not included in the $100 markup.

Re: [MBZ] E300 dizzel steering

2017-10-08 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I jacked up the car and took a look at the steering.  I think it is OK,
but the rack was moving around, like a quarter inch up and down when I
moved the front wheels and just jiggled it, which was giving the slop in
the steering.  Looks like these rubber mounting bushings are shot, cheap
easy fix,  I'll order some and put them in.  You can actually reach them
easily from under the car, wonder of wonders.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-rack-and-pinion-mount-bushing-e300-e320-e420-e430-e55-amg-2104631066

I'm guessing I need 4 of them for top and bottom each side? Anyone
know?  Maybe they got banged in some energetic collision, but nothing
else looks buggered so maybe it is just these bushings.

If that solves the problem this might be a decent driver even with the
banged up fascia.  I'll see if I can get a shot of AC juice in the
system and see if it BLOWS ICE COLD.

Hm maybe I ought be charging KLEB more for it...

It is telling me the engine needs servicing and the CEL is on, along
with some nanny telling me some light, but not which, is out.  Is this
car going to need the Poos system to troubleshoot it?  Or is there some
secret codes you can punch in to get it to give up lighting secrets?
And CEL codes?  Will my little thingie I have for the trucks tell me
anything or do I need the German Enigma machine?

Re: [MBZ] E300 dizzel

2017-10-08 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I went and picked it up this morning, she was glad to get the $500.  The
new BF was there, turns out he is in the wholesale car bidness, buys at
auction and flips them. He was pretty much a good ol boy, seemed to like
her well enough but she seemed a bit high-strung, who knows.  So I
talked to him a bit about this car being wrecked like 4 times, and he
laughed and said yeah, but it still runs, do a little fix up, put it on
CL for like $1800 and you'll sell it in no time.  He says that is a
great target market, someone just looking for a fairly cheap car, and
the Benz image! He told her to take the $500 (probably would have gone
lower just to unload it but who knew...) and be shed of the thing.  So
if Kleb lacks interest, I'll see what the deal is with the steering, see
if I can fix it, maybe find a new front bumper fascia at the knackers,
or maybe just glue it up and it's good ta go...

It started on 2 pulls this morning and ran fine, so I guess sitting for
2-3months probably got it unhappy.  Idles a little rough, but off idle
runs fine.  I might put some of that cleaner stuff in the fuel and see
if that even things up.

If I can get it fixed up easy enough maybe I'll just keep it, I don't
know.  if anyone other than Kleb has any interest let me know.

She was going to send me the old BF's number, turns out he lives next
island over (on a boat but has a shop somewhere) and I can deal with him
and the wheel.

What we do for these old POS Benzes...

So I’m here looking at this car, aside from the front bumper fascia
(crashed RF) and a rear taillight it doesn’t look too bad. Clear coat
fading, fairly clean inside, engine bay clean. RF wheel is the spare,
“myassholeexboyfriend” has the rim and won’t give it back. But she has 2
new tires in the garage she says

Tried to start it, it really didn’t want to. Battery fairly low. I put on
jumpers and after about 20 tries to start it and 30min it lit off and ran
fine. Sounded ok.

LR window went down, clunk, won’t go up. I guess AC doesn’t BLOW ICE COLD.

I backed out of the driveway and headed down the street, ran well. Went
to turn and HOLYSH** it was like trying to turn an ocean liner. Helm not
responding captain. I’m thinking she crashed into something and right
buggered the RF wheel and suspension steering bits. I came back to house
and parked it.

Called the girl and told her the issues and offered her $500. She said
another 200 for the tires and it was a deal. Having not seen these “new”
tires I told her we could work that out. So she said deal

So I’m coming back in the morning with the trailer and $500 and getting
the thing then see how badly the steering is Buggered. I have no idea what
I am going to do with it.

Look at where the door is.
I would think that the driver sits well back from the windshield and thus

Oh and look, I just got this email from Amazon:

 Introducing: Alexa on mobile

As a Prime member, you have free access to over 2 million songs and
thousands of expert-curated stations and playlists with Prime Music.

Alexa is now available in the Amazon Music App. Simply use the
push-to-talk function within the app to access Alexa’s voice controls.
No searching or browsing required – just ask.

So you can just ask Alexa to play stuff for you, or download stuff too I
guess.  Down side is Amazon will be listening to everything you say, so
there's that...

My daughter unit got me listening to podcasts, there is an infinite
variety of stuff out there for free, including back programs of radio
shows.  Some have a bit of commercial sponsorship but it is not really
intrusive.  I recently listened to Crime Town about Providence RI,
which was excellent as I recall Buddy Cianci and his shenanigans, and
S-Town about this small town in Alabama, which is excellent but might
not be to all tastes.  Or local paper has a weekly podcast about the
restaurant scene in town, I downloaded a whole bunch of them and
listened to them all on my road trip in August.
