I don't know what color it was originally. I think I bought it in 1965. it burned/leaked a quart of oil a week, so I used the drained 50W oil from Dad's Cessna 195 which held 5 gallons of oil that was changed every 25 hours. The split rear window had been replaced with one piece of glass, though it did still have the semaphore turn signal arms in the rear door posts. ATTABOY! W -From: "Meade Dillon via Mercedes" To: "Mercedes" Cc: "Meade Dillon" Sent: Monday June 24 2019 9:22:46AM Subject: [MBZ] AC success Saturday and yesterday I finished the reseal of the compressor, installed that, vacuumed the system for 30 minutes, and then put a small amount of propane / butane blend and then pressurized up to 150 psi with CO2. Checked around with the sniffer for leaks, and noted a leak at the compressor shaft seal and small leak (still) from the evaporator. The shaft seal leaking was expected, typically they need to run-in a bit to fully seat. I had one more can of leak sealer to address the evaporator. Bled off the test charge, installed a new receiver / dryer, vacuum again for thirty minutes, then attempted to charge the system with r134. First can goes in liquid, engine off, once that is mostly into the system, right the can and then start the engine so compressor can suck in more juice. Now I've got intermittent compressor engagement. KLIMA finally decided it was done playing. I'm not sure if the relay is bad, or an input is bad. Spent some time futzing with it, no joy, so I took the bypass relay and wiring that I made up for The White Whale KLIMA and installed that into this '95 E300. Lost more time, I was too hasty and pulled out the pins from the White Whale KLIMA socket before I noted which went where (only three pins are used), so I had to search around for that info. Found it on Peach Parts. Finally got the KLIMA bypass going, and proceeded with charging the system, then installed the leak sealer. Ran the AC for another 20 plus minutes per the leak sealer instructions, and then checked again for leaks with my sniffer. No leaks detected anywhere, so I think I've finally got this one sorted. I do need to set up the transmission kick-down jumper, to restore that function. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com [1] To search list archives Links: -- [1] http://www.okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: Linebacker II - Where's Wilton
I can wholeheartedly agree that SAC's LB II planning was totally stupid and screwed up. Many of us in the pre-mission briefing at U-Tapao, Thailand, the first night (18 Dec 72) saw the problems on the screen immediately as the curtains were retracted. When we saw the same BS on the screen when the curtains were retracted at start of the second night's briefing, we were damned mad. Both half-axles were also shot. I've got a very nice used differential from Wilton's 300D, only 148k miles, so that differential and axles are going into The White Whale. I ordered new differential mounts from FCP Euro last Sunday, got the wrong count. There are two rear diff mounts, bushings really. There is a single mount at the front, but that is really two pieces that make a sandwich on the sub-frame. I thought I ordered two rear mounts and one front mount (assuming I'd get both halves of the front mount). I ended up with two boxes of rear mounts (with two bushings in each box) and one half of the front mount. I'll reuse the best looking side from Wilton's sedan for now. But when it comes to deciding whether to flee this island where thousands of black residents trace their ancestry back to West Africans who once toiled in nearby fields, the opinions of family elders can carry as much weight as those of professional meteorologists. "If Mama won't leave, most folks aren't going to leave," Dais, 29, said Tuesday, recalling how he rode out Tropical Storm Irma last year and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 with relatives at his mother's home. "If Mama and Grandma are going, then a lot of people are leaving." Respect for tradition and deep cultural roots have persisted for generations on St. Helena Island, the largest Gullah community on the South Carolina coast. An estimated 5,000 or more people living here are descended from slaves who worked rice plantations in the area before they were freed by the Civil War. Smaller enclaves of Gullah, referred to as Geechee in some areas, are scattered along the Southeast's coastline from North Carolina to Florida. Scholars say separation from the mainland caused the Gullah to retain much of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as cast-net fishing and basket weaving. Destructive hurricanes haven't been too frequent in St. Helena Island's past. But the so-called Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 devastated the area after rolling ashore in Savannah, Ga., and killed an estimated 2,000 people. Emory Campbell, a Gullah descendant and scholar, recalled riding as a boy in a neighbor's old cart on Hilton Head Island as Hurricane Gracie struck in 1959 and tore the roof off a hotel. "We saw some remnants of hurricanes here when I was growing up," Campbell said. "The wind would blow, you'd put some tin up against the window, but you wouldn't know that much except for the scratchy sounds on the radio coming out of Savannah." Hurricane Matthew smashed and toppled trees across surrounding Beaufort County in 2016 but largely spared the modest ranch houses, bungalows and mobile homes of St. Helena Island. John Brown, 54, said he spent two weeks after Matthew cutting up fallen trees with a chain saw in his job for a municipal public works department. A giant live oak uprooted by the storm remains intact across the street from Brown's home. "If my job didn't require me to stay, I'd be out of here in a heartbeat," Brown said after giving fresh water to his four cows Tuesday. "I think most of the older ones, they're kind of stubborn. But the younger ones, not so much." Bertha Bradley wasn't worrying. She and her husband grew up on St. Helena Island and own Bradley's Seafood, a small cinderblock shop where they sell shrimp, flounder and whiting, all caught by their son. Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes, in part because her great-grandmother never did. Bradley and her husband missed Gracie in 1959 because they were in Savannah after getting married. One subsequent storm, she's not sure which one, scared them enough to get them to leave the island. But the traffic, she said, was awful. "I said, 'Why get on the road like this? I'm going to get killed on the road,'" Bradley said. "I should stay in my house, where I have water and food. If God's coming for you, you can't run from him." *— Russ Bynum, Associated Press* ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Week or so ago, SWMBO came in with mystery question: She had been leaving a parking lot to head home when a woman came running toward her with arms waving and calling out, "Your trunk is open! Your trunk is open!" Shownuff, SWMBO checked in mirror and saw trunk lid standing straight up! I told SWMBO that maybe she had inadvertently "hit" the OPEN switch on the key fob or in the driver door inside panel. Then, as I entered kitchen at about 0800 this morning, I glanced out at the car via a window in door from outside into the kitchen and saw the trunk lid standing straight up, again! I went out and, luckily, did not find anything "amiss" (did not notice anything missing or rearranged in trunk - my electric mobility scooter is most significant thing there). What the!!!?? Re: [MBZ] OK, How do I get the instrument cluster out?
Or one can easily make a nice set of hooks from a coat hanger: Cut piece of coat hanger 6" to 8" long. Bend 1/8" on one end 90° to main axis. Make loop on other end for gripping with finger(s). With hook aligned to slip into slot between cluster "case" and dashboard about 1" to 2" above outsider corners of cluster, push hook ¾" or so into slot; rotate hook 90° and pull it to engage outer case of cluster. This always worked easily and nicely on my 123's and 126, but I had to free the cluster on my 124 the first time by driving putty knife into the slot around the case because of mfgr's glue overflow onto the rubber around the case/cluster. [MBZ] OT FOR WILTON
e at war trying to rid the world of their maniacal leader and his thugs - one of my brothers, Lewis, was on Omaha Beach in Normandy at the same time the visitors were living with us. Later that year, my brother, Carson, who slept in the same room with the visitors as “brothers,” was drafted into the army and fought in Germany the following spring. At the same time I had such a fear and hatred of Germans as a little boy (because of the talk of war, news on the radio, in the papers, the enemy, etc.), these two kind, young German men lived with us and were my good friends. (For years, I have wondered what happened to the two visitors. Who were they, really, and where were they really from? Did they stay on in the states after the war? Have they kept their “secret” all these years, or did they return to Germany a year or so after they lived with us? Have they raised families - are their families German or American? Have they told their children and families about my mother, who cooked three full meals for them every day and cared for them in many other ways as if they were her own children? Have they told their families about the kind, tenant-farmer family in North Carolina who gave them refuge, treating them as sons and brothers during such a cruel and terrible time in world history? Can we all take this as a good example of how even mortal enemies can live in peace, harmony & trust if we look at each other as fellow humans in need of comfort without all the usual “baggage” of politics and religion? I hope so.) [MBZ] Leaf/snow blower
Coupla weeks ago, I needed a leaf blower to clean up leaves around edges of yard, walkways and driveway - areas I can't finish properly by mulching with the JD garden tractor/mower the way I do the main lawn areas. Found battery-operated, 60 volt model at Lowe's that I can handle while using my walker and/or riding the mower. Normally at $250, it was "on sale" for $200, I offered the saleslady $150. She called her super, who accepted. 'Got to cash register, where it was marked down some more, and I reminded the cashier of my military discount for additional reduction. 'Brought it home for $109. Worked great for blowing the leaves. This afternoon SWMBO used it very effectively for blowing snow (~2+ inches) off front portico and walkway to the street. I then used it to clear path from kitchen to car. 'Well satisfied with it's performance so far. [MBZ] Frost damage
More frostbite: TENDER AMERICAN & A TOUGH GREENLANDER One evening at dinner in early December of 1978, while I was Director of Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, a friend reminded me that a popular movie was playing at the base theater. Because it was very cold outside (chill factor about -85° F), we rushed to the theater hoping to get in without standing in line outside, but we were too late; there was already a line of about 25 people. Though I was wearing thermal underwear and boots, regular pants and shirt, a down ski jacket with hood and gloves, I was worried about getting frostbite on my uncovered face. (I had gotten some frostbite in Michigan about 5 years earlier - I knew I had to be careful.) While standing in line a few minutes before getting to the ticket booth, I hunched down behind the much taller guy in front of me to try shielding my face from the wind. I also covered my face lightly with my hands and, for some additional heat on my face, exhaled my warm breath into the space between my hands and face. The line moved along reasonably well, and I soon got inside and enjoyed the movie. Before getting up the next morning, I could feel my forehead tingling and itching, and when I looked into the mirror to shave, I saw a red, vertical streak about ¾" wide down approximately the middle of my forehead - I had frostbite again! As before, the skin on the frozen area came off much like sunburn, and the area itched for years. Until just a few years ago, I could still see the red streak on my forehead occasionally. At Sunday lunch a few days later, somebody mentioned that some sled dog teams were down at the port, seven miles away. (Tourists from Europe would occasionally fly in and charter native Greenlander sled dog teams for two-week trips from Sondy to a small village on the coast or out onto the ice cap a few miles away.) After lunch, a couple of friends rode down to the port with me to see the dog teams. When we arrived at the port, only one team was still there. The driver/master/musher was busy rounding up his dogs and hitching them to the sled. (In Greenland, the 12 to 14 dogs forming a team are hitched to the sled individually in a wide, fan pattern; in Canada and Alaska, the dogs are hitched in pairs to form a straight column of twos in front of the sled to facilitate passing between trees.) One-by-one, the musher attached a rope to each dog's harness and placed the dog in position in front of the sled. As he would turn away to fetch another dog, those already in position would watch the musher closely, and when the musher was looking away from them, they would hurriedly dig into cardboard boxes on the sled. The musher caught them doing this two or three times and scolded them harshly while kicking them back to their places in front of the sled. During the few minutes the musher was getting the dogs in place, I stepped outside of my crew-cab truck several times to take photos. The chill factor was still about -85° F. Because I could not operate the camera wearing gloves, though, I removed them, focused as much as possible from inside the truck, then stepped outside, quickly refined the focus, took the shot and got back in the heated truck in just a few seconds. Before I could finish the photo each time, though, my fingers, nose, and face were tingling and hurting from the cold. I'm certain that, if I had been outside for a few more seconds, I would have had some frostbite. During the entire time, however, the Greenlander was wearing nothing on his head, face, ears and hands. What under garments he may have been wearing I don't know, but his outer clothing was blue jeans, a plaid shirt and boots/mukluks - no additional parka, etc. He suddenly had all of his dogs in place, made one final and quick motion to attach all the tow ropes to the sled at a single point, and flopped quickly down on the sled as the dogs took off. In a flash, they were down the sloped shoreline and moving rapidly down the frozen fjord, the musher's head, face, ears and hands still exposed to the extreme arctic conditions. The mysterious and amazing point to me in all of this is how my exposed skin could freeze so quickly and the Greenlander's not under the same conditions at the same time? Had the Greenlander become genetically and metabolically adapted over many generations to tolerate much colder temperatures than I can? I think that is the case, but my simple explanation, meanwhile, is that I was an extremely tender American and that was one VERY TOUGH Greenlander. [MBZ] Frost damage
That reminds me: FROZEN FANNY During the winter of 1973-74, when I was on a B-52H combat crew at Kincheloe AFB, MI, the co-pilot and I attended a dinner party with our wives at the Officers Club one evening while on alert. Because I was going to be inside the club building for three or four hours, I had removed my thermal underwear, and was wearing only my cotton under shorts, T-shirt, Nomex flight suit, and street shoes and socks. While traveling from the alert facility to the club and back, I also wore a flight parka with a hood (waist-length heavy coat) and gloves. As usual, we had additional cold weather clothing on the aircraft we could don if we were suddenly called upon to fly during this time. On this particular day, as on many days in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, it had snowed hard all day. Arriving back at the alert facility after the party, our crew-cab truck got stuck in deep snow near our parking space, and as we tried to free the vehicle, one of the snow chains came off a rear wheel. Using snow shovels, the co-pilot and I worked for several minutes to remove snow from beneath the vehicle and reinstall the chain. After we had finally parked the vehicle in the appropriate space, we went inside the building, where a movie was playing in the briefing room. I stepped inside the briefing room, stood and watched the screen for a couple of minutes, then took a seat on the front row to watch the rest of the movie. As I sat down, though, I suddenly felt significant pain in the buttocks area - I had frozen my buttocks! While I shoveled snow and reinstalled the chain, my thin flightsuit and under shorts were pulled tightly across my buttocks, which were elevated to the full fury of the blizzard as I bent to the task. The skin on my buttocks came off like sunburn, and the area itched slightly for years. So, you see, I literally froze my fanny off for Uncle Sam, and no, I did not claim a Purple Heart for it. Oh, by the way, I never stood around scratching the itch, either - I simply endured it. All crews flew all the aircraft at random. Only maintenance crew chiefs could claim "my airplane." In an 18-aircraft squadron, 4 aircraft sat on alert (nukes & everything loaded ready to be in flight in less than 15 min. from klaxon sounding) for 3-month periods on a rotating basis. Crews were on alert every 3rd week and usually flew 2 or 3 training missions (8 to 10 hrs ea.) between alert tours. After a week on alert, crews were "off" for 3½ (usually, 4 for practical purposes) days, when they were not supposed to be "bothered," except for "special" occasion. This off time was not counted as leave, and we could go any where we wanted with no limits except to be back and available for duty at end of the "off" time. I flew a Cessna 182 from Sault Ste. Marie, MI, to Rocky Mount, NC, to visit my mom during one of these periods in Dec '74. Ditto for coupla trips for daughter's college visit & orientation in '75. Aircraft flew 400 to 500 hrs per year. It would be an interesting experiment anyway unless it's already been tried. Gerry Yes, by by swirling my hand around the hole in clockwise direction, I was able to overcome the counterclockwise rotation caused by the Coriolis effect and make the pool rotate clockwise temporarily. Each time, after I stopped swirling by hand, the rotation would slowly stop (not abruptly) and return to its natural, counterclockwise state. As for nukedet in a hurricane, I think its hot, rising column of hot air would create localized tornadic-like action soon (well, eventually, anyway) to be overcome by the much larger system as long as it has an energy source such as a large, warm body of water beneath it. [MBZ] Irma & coriolis
'Just happen to have written a "dissertation" on the subject coupla years ago. Here it is: ANOTHER NATURAL WONDER - CORIOLIS DEMO: By Wilton Strickland About one mile due south of the parking ramp and control tower and across the Watson River at Sondrestrom Air Base (Kangerlussuaq), Greenland, is a small area laced with a "spider web" of small, shallow streams that constitute the outflow from Lake Ferguson. (Google Earth Kangerlussuaq) The area is on a plateau between the lake and the river and is covered with thick, low-growth tundra. Several times on warm and sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoons in the short summer of 1978, I walked around in the area of the streams enjoying the gurgling, cold, clear water as it rushes slightly down slope to the river. At the edge of the plateau above the river, the water cascades down a cliff-like bank, but, up on the plateau, the several streams are only a couple of inches deep and one can easily walk amongst them, step over them, etc. While walking amongst the streams, I noticed a very interesting phenomenon in the rock bottom of one of the streams - water was rushing in a rapid, counterclockwise swirl into a round hole in the bottom about one inch in diameter - a beautiful example and demonstration of the Coriolis effect, which causes fluids to flow in a drain or rise in a column (a tornado, for example) in a counterclockwise manner in the Northern Hemisphere and in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere. The cone-shaped swirl was so perfect rushing into the hole, that I was able to tuck my finger deeply into the middle of the hole without getting it wet. I tried to disrupt the counterclockwise motion and make it swirl in a clockwise fashion by swirling my hand around the hole in a clockwise direction to force the water to reverse is direction of flow. I could get the swirl reversed, but it soon slowed and returned to its normal counterclockwise direction after I stopped swirling it with my hand. Actually, Coriolis affects all objects, not only fluids, on Earth when they move from one point to another across the surface, within it and above it. This effect appears greatest when the object moves directly north or south. The effect and its apparent deflection of the moving object is caused by the Earth's rotation and its spherical shape which leads to the Earth's surface and objects on it having the highest west to east velocity at the equator; and decreasing as distance from the equator increases. This velocity at the equator is about 1,042 mph and decreases to zero at the poles. The entire Earth's angular velocity is 15° per hour, but due to its diminishing size as distance from the equator increases, the west-to-east surface velocity decreases accordingly. An airplane, or anything for that matter, moving North from any point, departs that point with the west-to-east, Earth-induced velocity of the point - faster eastward than the ground beneath it as it proceeds northward; it appears, therefore, to be deflected eastward (to the right in the northern hemisphere). An airplane, or anything, southbound in the Northern Hemisphere, has a SLOWER Earth-induced eastward velocity than the ground beneath it as it proceeds southward. The Earth beneath it is going eastward FASTER than the airplane's/object's Earth-induced velocity; the airplane/object, then, appears, relative to the Earth's surface, to be deflected to the right, again. This same Coriolis effect is what causes hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, draining water, etc., in the Northern Hemisphere to rotate counterclockwise. Rising columns of warmer air in thunderstorms, any low pressure area of weather, draining fluids, etc., pull additional molecules of fluid horizontally to fill the space vacated by the vertical movement of fluids. Every molecule of fluid (air or water) in these situations that have any north-south component to its vector (direction and magnitude of movement) is deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere. (All of these directions are, of course, reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.) Though the apparent "force" on each molecule is infinitesimally small, the combination of them all produces the cyclonic, counterclockwise motion that can be extremely destructive and deadly when they form into a hurricane, typhoon or tornado. Again, this apparent force applies to EVERYTHING moving from one point to another on, in, or above the Earth. It applies not only to airplanes and fluids in motion but also to balls, birds and bullets in flight and to our cars and bicycles as we drive or ride along; it even applies to a person walking or running. We never notice it, because "the force" (the apparent deflection) is so small and we constantly correct for it by maintaining contact, or repeated, cyclical contact with the Earth. 'Seems silly, but let's imagine and analyze a person's walk, for example: As the rear foot is moved forward
[MBZ] Irma & coriolis
How's Irma for a fantastic demonstration of the Coriolis effect? A rising column of air generated by heat from the sun and shaped (spun) by Earth's rotation and spherical shape.
