True enough at first. Mission Planning didn't rely on any sort of
deception, and the North Vietnamese could guess at the routes from where
the tankers were orbiting. But, that was also true of most of the air
attacks in the North. On the other hand, there was also a belief that the
little black boxes would be magical, and to an extent they were. But in
the end, Mission Planning really under estimated that amount of missile
shots that the North was capable of making. Then the North ran out of
missiles. Literally. And there were still plenty of Buffs.

Bigger Hammer replied with link from Wikipedia:
The SAC H.Q. botched those missions BADLY due to Lazy - stupid planning.
Each night the mission was IDENTICAL - each "cell" of three B-52s flew the
EXACT same altitude, exact same speed, exact same route, exact same
turning point, exact same exit path. To make matters worse, the mission
template called for a severe turn out after bomb drop which turned the
jammers antenna away from the ground at a time the B-52 was most
vulnerable, (bomb doors wide open, steep turn, most radar visible with
least amount of E.C.M. That is when the majority of losses occurred. The
N.V.A. were no dummies. It was like shooting skeet. If you know exactly
where the targets will be, speed, altitude, course, where they will turn
out and reduce their defense capability, ... even B-52s become easy
targets, especially for the SAMs that were designed & built specifically
to shoot them down and having the Soviet Air Defense experts there to
assist ...

The Crews basically mutinied and said, "change up the damn attack plan or
find some other idiots to be your clay pigeons"... SAC figured out that
unsustainable losses were a "Bad Thing" and changed up the attack plans
(no stupid tight post target turnouts wrecking the E.C.M. coverage, varied
courses, speeds, altitudes & routes, ect... The mixed in a B-52 D into
each cell of three B-52 (usually with two "G" models as the "D" had more
powerful E.C.M. Jamming better equipped for providing E.C.M. jamming in
Vietnam against the SAM-2 threat so the "D" model E.C.M. coverage helped
protect its newer, yet weaker, "G" model brothers.

Operation Linebacker II - B-52s over North Vietnam

Couchlord responded:

Indeed. It was even worse than that.

The turn out took them into the jet stream and an instant -100mph ground
speed hit, increasing their SAM exposure time accordingly.
The turn out was not necessary, they were dropping iron bombs from 40K'
not 10MT nukes.
The cells were split into 3 groups of attacks each night split by exactly
3 hours. Each attack, as mentioned above, flew the exact same routes to
the exact same targets. The 3 hour gap allowed the NVA to reload their SAM
sites.
The same targets were attacked on consecutive nights with the exact same
timing and routes, as mentioned above.

The SAM depots were not attacked.
The B-52's were ordered not to jink.
Splitting each nights attack into 3 waves separated by 3 hours diluted the
Wild Weasel and CAP support.

The chaff corridor was poorly timed and

Done with both mounts, using all-thread / socket / washers. I'm SO glad
this job wasn't was bad as you describe Dan. I must be living right.

They were dead, left side was very badly deteriorated. This work is on
The
White Whale, 390k miles, and the differential has so much slop in the
right

side bearing that I get bad knocking noises from the rear end under
acceleration. Both half-axles were also shot.

I've got a very nice used differential from Wilton's 300D, only 148k
miles,

so that differential and axles are going into The White Whale.

I ordered new differential mounts from FCP Euro last Sunday, got the wrong
count. There are two rear diff mounts, bushings really. There is a
single

mount at the front, but that is really two pieces that make a sandwich on
the sub-frame. I thought I ordered two rear mounts and one front mount
(assuming I'd get both halves of the front mount). I ended up with two
boxes of rear mounts (with two bushings in each box) and one half of the
front mount. I'll reuse the best looking side from Wilton's sedan for
now.

OK, back out under TWW to muscle the diff into place, fun fun fun...

SOUTH CAROLINAGullah enclave has long history of enduring
hurricanesPublished:

Thursday, September 13, 2018

As a potentially catastrophic Hurricane Florence steamed toward the
Carolinas, Josh Dais watched the weather reports on the television in his
barbershop and listened for updates from emergency officials.

But when it comes to deciding whether to flee this island where thousands
of black residents trace their ancestry back to West Africans who once
toiled in nearby fields, the opinions of family elders can carry as much
weight as those of professional meteorologists.

"If Mama won't leave, most folks aren't going to leave," Dais, 29, said
Tuesday, recalling how he rode out Tropical Storm Irma last year and
Hurricane Matthew in 2016 with relatives at his mother's home. "If Mama
and

Grandma are going, then a lot of people are leaving."

Respect for tradition and deep cultural roots have persisted for
generations on St. Helena Island, the largest Gullah community on the
South
Carolina coast. An estimated 5,000 or more people living here are
descended

from slaves who worked rice plantations in the area before they were freed
by the Civil War.

Smaller enclaves of Gullah, referred to as Geechee in some areas, are
scattered along the Southeast's coastline from North Carolina to Florida.
Scholars say separation from the mainland caused the Gullah to retain much
of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as
cast-net fishing and basket weaving.

Destructive hurricanes haven't been too frequent in St. Helena Island's
past. But the so-called Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 devastated the area
after rolling ashore in Savannah, Ga., and killed an estimated 2,000
people.

Emory Campbell, a Gullah descendant and scholar, recalled riding as a boy
in a neighbor's old cart on Hilton Head Island as Hurricane Gracie struck
in 1959 and tore the roof off a hotel.

"We saw some remnants of hurricanes here when I was growing up," Campbell
said. "The wind would blow, you'd put some tin up against the window, but
you wouldn't know that much except for the scratchy sounds on the radio
coming out of Savannah."

Hurricane Matthew smashed and toppled trees across surrounding Beaufort
County in 2016 but largely spared the modest ranch houses, bungalows and
mobile homes of St. Helena Island.

John Brown, 54, said he spent two weeks after Matthew cutting up fallen
trees with a chain saw in his job for a municipal public works department.
A giant live oak uprooted by the storm remains intact across the street
from Brown's home.

"If my job didn't require me to stay, I'd be out of here in a heartbeat,"
Brown said after giving fresh water to his four cows Tuesday. "I think
most

of the older ones, they're kind of stubborn. But the younger ones, not so
much."

Bertha Bradley wasn't worrying. She and her husband grew up on St. Helena
Island and own Bradley's Seafood, a small cinderblock shop where they sell
shrimp, flounder and whiting, all caught by their son.

Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes, in part
because her great-grandmother never did. Bradley and her husband missed
Gracie in 1959 because they were in Savannah after getting married. One
subsequent storm, she's not sure which one, scared them enough to get them
to leave the island.

But the traffic, she said, was awful.

"I said, 'Why get on the road like this? I'm going to get killed on the
road,'" Bradley said. "I should stay in my house, where I have water and
food. If God's coming for you, you can't run from him." *— Russ Bynum,

1300 14 Sep; doing fairly well here; winds during night and today 'bout 30
mph w/gusts to 45-50. Lucky to stay fairly well between rain bands most of
night and much of today. Basement still dry. Running sump pump in outside
basement well occasionally. Still have power. Center is ashore and moving
VERY slowly away from us - quite a way to go to clear the area, though.

I keep wondering how the forecasters predicted Florence to gain and hold
strength until it hit land. What little I know saw the same with high water
temps and nothing in the way of steering winds to block it. It started at
Force 4 and hit at Force 2. Do we not understand hurricanes? Are the
reporting devices (buoys, etc) not working properly? Did something appear
like a new High or Low pressure area to weaken or steer it?

Anyone know?

Certainly this challenge is common to a decent percentage of our

I wonder if there is a suitable glue to fix the base/mount of the grab

Thanks Wilton, I considered that route as well, however after some study
and measurement [happen to have a few Mercedes around to measure] I find
clamping anything to the drain channel would disrupt the trunk seal rubber
and breach the trunk seal in a way that could generate a leak path. So, my
choice was to use the edge of the trunk at the skin pinch weld area.

Disadvantage of that could be, the grab bar would lift with the trunk lid.

The design I'm thinking of would clamp to the edge of the trunk at the
side

seam and perhaps be the length of the straight portion of the trunk lid,
so
there was plenty of good solid support that wouldn't come loose in heat,
like a suction cup will eventually.

Same clamping system for the door pieces, since the pinch weld for both
the
door edge and trunk edge is the same thickness. The grab bar would rise
with the opening of the trunk lid.. that might present a problem?

Should be good for a 200 lb pull , scientific wild ass guess calculation
wise. The actual grab bar could be, say, 1 1/4 inch diameter, so not "to

Wilton,

If you had grab bars that attached to the top of the doors and were the
length of the top of the door [front and rear, individual pieces] , then
another grab bar that attached to the side lip of the trunk and ran the
length of the trunk, Could you reach them easily?

I have a design in mind for grab bars that would attach to the upper lip
of

They could be coated with rubber grip material to retard heat and give
grip. Install should be simple and easy.

As an alternative, the grab bars on the doors could be vertical and
mounted

on the trailing edge of the doors, your option.

I wait for your guidance.

This afternoon I took a couple hours and installed some new parts on The

belt tensioner.

https://youtu.be/OVPPmF94UNA

Installed the new shock (Stabilus, same brand as the old shock), repeated
the test.

https://youtu.be/efSfZ1nN474

Here's the amount of serp. belt vibration with the new shock and the
original solid pulley.

https://youtu.be/2zkNA4QkeHY

Now with the new OAP clutched pulley.

https://youtu.be/yfUouS4WBFk

Very little difference in the amount of serp. belt vibration. Worth $35
for the clutch and special tool?

[MBZ] 211 trunk lid gremlin?

2018-04-02 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Week or so ago, SWMBO came in with mystery question: She had been leaving a
parking lot to head home when a woman came running toward her with arms
waving and calling out, "Your trunk is open! Your trunk is open!"
Shownuff, SWMBO checked in mirror and saw trunk lid standing straight up! I
told SWMBO that maybe she had inadvertently "hit" the OPEN switch on the key
fob or in the driver door inside panel.

Then, as I entered kitchen at about 0800 this morning, I glanced out at the
car via a window in door from outside into the kitchen and saw the trunk lid
standing straight up, again! I went out and, luckily, did not find anything
"amiss" (did not notice anything missing or rearranged in trunk - my
electric mobility scooter is most significant thing there). What the!!!??

original wood floors have been sanded and will be stained and refinished
this weekend. Main floor will have new wood floors installed next month.
The only other things left are painting and installation of new
toilet/sink in the combo laundry room/bathroom. The electrician will be
coming back next month to install all the new light fixtures. AND, we
are under budget. Although, we are buying new kitchen appliances tonight
and that will add an extra $1000 to budget.

Re: [MBZ] OK, How do I get the instrument cluster out?

2018-02-14 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Or one can easily make a nice set of hooks from a coat hanger: Cut piece of
coat hanger 6" to 8" long. Bend 1/8" on one end 90° to main axis. Make
loop on other end for gripping with finger(s). With hook aligned to slip
into slot between cluster "case" and dashboard about 1" to 2" above outsider
corners of cluster, push hook ¾" or so into slot; rotate hook 90° and pull
it to engage outer case of cluster. This always worked easily and nicely on
my 123's and 126, but I had to free the cluster on my 124 the first time by
driving putty knife into the slot around the case because of mfgr's glue
overflow onto the rubber around the case/cluster.

Craig,

Just got my official MB pulling hooks out of the tool chest. Here’s what
I can tell you:

Part number: 140 589 02 33 00
Length of wire: approximately 6” from handle to hook
Hook length: 3/16”
Wire diameter: ~ 2 mm

There is a black line approximately 2-1/2” up from the end with the hook.
I suspect that’s a reference point for how far you’re supposed to stick
them into the dash before rotating to engage the cluster. I’ll check
today as I’m planning on pulling the cluster on the 400E.

Just from working on some of the newer cars I would guess they will not
last as long. Some of the 10 year old cars now I see priced at about half
or a 3rd or what a similarly model would have been when the 123 124 126
and 140s were at the same 10 year mark in their life cycle. If that makes
sense. They seem cheaper to buy.

The 210 seems ok but is not built as tough as the 124 or older. While I
like driving the 210, every time I get back into a 124 I really think I
like them better even though the 210 has some nice modern features.

[MBZ] OT FOR WILTON

2018-01-20 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

This recent thread is evidently related to my "TWO STRANGERS" post in July,
2014, in which I related my story of two young men who lived with my
family

for several weeks in the summer of 1944. I did not realize it then, but I
now feel confident that they were very likely German POW's.

Here's a link discussing such POW's in NC
https://www.ncpedia.org/history/20th-Century/wwii-pows

Note that main camps for the POW's were Fort Bragg (south of our home in
1944), Camp Butner (NW of our home in '44) and Camp McCall (SW of our home
in '44), but several smaller camps (New Bern, Edenton, Williamston,
Wilmington, Ahoskie) were generally east of us. The farm is located 5
miles
west of Spring Hope on US highway 64, at that time a main east-west
corridor

running generally through the middle of the state the entire distance from
Manteo on the coast nearly 600 miles to the SW corner of the state. The
entire route has been significantly upgraded and/or replaced and
supplemented by multi-lane, limited access super highways, such as I-40
and

I-85, but many parts of the 1944 highway are still in use. The two men in
1944 were traveling westward from somewhere east of our farm.

Following is a re-post of the original:

TWO STRANGERS (VISITORS)

One Saturday afternoon in early summer, Carson, then nearly 18 and
driving the car, Daddy and I, then 10, were returning home after grocery
shopping in Spring Hope. We came upon two young men in their early
twenties, standing by the road trying to “hitch” a ride. We stopped for
them, and they got into the back seat with me. They were thin, dirty &
unshaven and had no luggage or baggage - no package of any sort - that I
remember. They said that they had not had a meal in several days and had
been eating green, raw corn from the fields by the road. They told us that
they were from New Jersey and just “bumming” around the country on an
“adventure.” Because tobacco harvest time was just beginning, and labor
was
in short supply, Daddy made a deal with them to stay with us for the
summer

and help with the harvest.
They had never been on a farm before, but learned quickly, seeming to
enjoy all of it, especially when I would let them “drive” the mules
pulling
the small tobacco trucks back and forth from the fields to the curing
barn.

At times, however, they wanted the mules to go too fast for our safety and
the animals’ good health. Once, when one of them was driving the mule
pulling an empty tobacco trunk along the side of the busy, paved highway,
and I was in the truck with him, he was making the mule run. Suddenly,
the
mule bolted onto the pavement in front of an approaching Trailways bus!
The
bus driver and I stared into each other’s terrified eyes as the bus
skidded

toward us and stopped close enough for me to reach out and touch the front
of it. Every day I’ve had since that day has been a bonus.
The visitors and I soon became good friends and were often “alone” -
just the three of us. Almost every time we were “alone,” one of them
would
ask me if I spoke German, sometimes pressing me with, “Are you sure you
don’t

speak German?” Of course, I, a ten-year-old farm boy in eastern North
Carolina in 1944, did not speak German. After being assured each time
that
I did not speak German, they would go into a private & lengthy
conversation

in German. Until a few years ago, I had never told anybody else in the
family about these conversations in German and their insistence that I not
be able to understand them. They never spoke German around others in the
family, and I was too young and naïve to suspect anything other than what
they had told us, but I now feel certain that the two young men were,
indeed, German.
The two visitors were with us for six or eight weeks ‘til Daddy began
to

suspect that he may have been harboring “draft dodgers” and asked them to
leave. They left our lives as suddenly as they had entered. Meanwhile,
they had become part of our family - ate with us, slept in our house, wore
my brothers’ clothes, etc. - a relaxed & comfortable part of the family.
Though they became such a part of the family for that short time, I do not
remember their names; I vaguely remember that one was blond and the other
darker.
Years later, after I had gained some knowledge of German, and learned
that there had been German prisoner-of-war camps in eastern North Carolina
and German ships/submarines had been sunk near the coast, I realized that
these two were most likely escaped German prisoners of war or even
survivors
from a sunken German ship. There were times many years ago, while
watching

a movie with German speakers or someone speaking English with a German
accent, when I would feel that I had heard certain sounds and accent
before,
finally realizing and remembering that I had heard them in 1944 from our
two

visitors.
How ironic that these two lived with us in friendship while two of my
brothers were at war trying to rid the

[MBZ] Leaf/snow blower

2018-01-05 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Coupla weeks ago, I needed a leaf blower to clean up leaves around edges of
yard, walkways and driveway - areas I can't finish properly by mulching with
the JD garden tractor/mower the way I do the main lawn areas. Found
battery-operated, 60 volt model at Lowe's that I can handle while using my
walker and/or riding the mower. Normally at $250, it was "on sale" for $200, I
offered the saleslady $150. She called her super, who accepted. 'Got to cash
register, where it was marked down some more, and I reminded the cashier of my
military discount for additional reduction. 'Brought it home for $109. Worked
great for blowing the leaves.

This afternoon SWMBO used it very effectively for blowing snow (~2+ inches) off
front portico and walkway to the street. I then used it to clear path from
kitchen to car.

'Well satisfied with it's performance so far.

[MBZ] Frost damage

2018-01-03 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

More frostbite:

TENDER AMERICAN & A TOUGH GREENLANDER

One evening at dinner in early December of 1978, while I was Director
of Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, a friend reminded me that
a popular movie was playing at the base theater. Because it was very cold
outside (chill factor about -85° F), we rushed to the theater hoping to get
in without standing in line outside, but we were too late; there was already
a line of about 25 people. Though I was wearing thermal underwear and
boots, regular pants and shirt, a down ski jacket with hood and gloves, I
was worried about getting frostbite on my uncovered face. (I had gotten
some frostbite in Michigan about 5 years earlier - I knew I had to be
careful.) While standing in line a few minutes before getting to the ticket
booth, I hunched down behind the much taller guy in front of me to try
shielding my face from the wind. I also covered my face lightly with my
hands and, for some additional heat on my face, exhaled my warm breath into
the space between my hands and face. The line moved along reasonably well,
and I soon got inside and enjoyed the movie.
Before getting up the next morning, I could feel my forehead tingling
and itching, and when I looked into the mirror to shave, I saw a red,
vertical streak about ¾" wide down approximately the middle of my forehead -
I had frostbite again! As before, the skin on the frozen area came off much
like sunburn, and the area itched for years. Until just a few years ago, I
could still see the red streak on my forehead occasionally.
At Sunday lunch a few days later, somebody mentioned that some sled dog
teams were down at the port, seven miles away. (Tourists from Europe would
occasionally fly in and charter native Greenlander sled dog teams for
two-week trips from Sondy to a small village on the coast or out onto the
ice cap a few miles away.) After lunch, a couple of friends rode down to
the port with me to see the dog teams.
When we arrived at the port, only one team was still there. The
driver/master/musher was busy rounding up his dogs and hitching them to the
sled. (In Greenland, the 12 to 14 dogs forming a team are hitched to the
sled individually in a wide, fan pattern; in Canada and Alaska, the dogs are
hitched in pairs to form a straight column of twos in front of the sled to
facilitate passing between trees.) One-by-one, the musher attached a rope
to each dog's harness and placed the dog in position in front of the sled.
As he would turn away to fetch another dog, those already in position would
watch the musher closely, and when the musher was looking away from them,
they would hurriedly dig into cardboard boxes on the sled. The musher
caught them doing this two or three times and scolded them harshly while
kicking them back to their places in front of the sled.
During the few minutes the musher was getting the dogs in place, I
stepped outside of my crew-cab truck several times to take photos. The
chill factor was still about -85° F. Because I could not operate the camera
wearing gloves, though, I removed them, focused as much as possible from
inside the truck, then stepped outside, quickly refined the focus, took the
shot and got back in the heated truck in just a few seconds. Before I could
finish the photo each time, though, my fingers, nose, and face were tingling
and hurting from the cold. I'm certain that, if I had been outside for a
few more seconds, I would have had some frostbite. During the entire time,
however, the Greenlander was wearing nothing on his head, face, ears and
hands. What under garments he may have been wearing I don't know, but his
outer clothing was blue jeans, a plaid shirt and boots/mukluks - no
additional parka, etc.
He suddenly had all of his dogs in place, made one final and quick
motion to attach all
the tow ropes to the sled at a single point, and flopped quickly down on the
sled as the dogs took off. In a flash, they were down the sloped shoreline
and moving rapidly down the frozen fjord, the musher's head, face, ears and
hands still exposed to the extreme arctic conditions.
The mysterious and amazing point to me in all of this is how my exposed
skin could freeze so quickly and the Greenlander's not under the same
conditions at the same time? Had the Greenlander become genetically and
metabolically adapted over many generations to tolerate much colder
temperatures than I can? I think that is the case, but my simple
explanation, meanwhile, is that I was an extremely tender American and that
was one VERY TOUGH Greenlander.

[MBZ] Frost damage

2018-01-02 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

That reminds me:

FROZEN FANNY

During the winter of 1973-74, when I was on a B-52H combat crew at
Kincheloe AFB, MI, the co-pilot and I attended a dinner party with our wives
at the Officers Club one evening while on alert. Because I was going to be
inside the club building for three or four hours, I had removed my thermal
underwear, and was wearing only my cotton under shorts, T-shirt, Nomex
flight suit, and street shoes and socks. While traveling from the alert
facility to the club and back, I also wore a flight parka with a hood
(waist-length heavy coat) and gloves. As usual, we had additional cold
weather clothing on the aircraft we could don if we were suddenly called
upon to fly during this time. On this particular day, as on many days in
the Michigan Upper Peninsula, it had snowed hard all day.
Arriving back at the alert facility after the party, our crew-cab truck
got stuck in deep snow near our parking space, and as we tried to free the
vehicle, one of the snow chains came off a rear wheel. Using snow shovels,
the co-pilot and I worked for several minutes to remove snow from beneath
the vehicle and reinstall the chain.
After we had finally parked the vehicle in the appropriate space, we
went inside the building, where a movie was playing in the briefing room. I
stepped inside the briefing room, stood and watched the screen for a couple
of minutes, then took a seat on the front row to watch the rest of the
movie. As I sat down, though, I suddenly felt significant pain in the
buttocks area - I had frozen my buttocks!
While I shoveled snow and reinstalled the chain, my thin flightsuit and
under shorts were pulled tightly across my buttocks, which were elevated to
the full fury of the blizzard as I bent to the task. The skin on my
buttocks came off like sunburn, and the area itched slightly for years. So,
you see, I literally froze my fanny off for Uncle Sam, and no, I did not
claim a Purple Heart for it. Oh, by the way, I never stood around
scratching the itch, either - I simply endured it.

[MBZ] This One's for Wilton

2017-12-22 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
All crews flew all the aircraft at random. Only maintenance crew chiefs
could claim "my airplane." In an 18-aircraft squadron, 4 aircraft sat on
alert (nukes & everything loaded ready to be in flight in less than 15 min.
from klaxon sounding) for 3-month periods on a rotating basis. Crews were
on alert every 3rd week and usually flew 2 or 3 training missions (8 to 10
hrs ea.) between alert tours. After a week on alert, crews were "off" for
3½ (usually, 4 for practical purposes) days, when they were not supposed to
be "bothered," except for "special" occasion. This off time was not counted
as leave, and we could go any where we wanted with no limits except to be
back and available for duty at end of the "off" time. I flew a Cessna 182
from Sault Ste. Marie, MI, to Rocky Mount, NC, to visit my mom during one of
these periods in Dec '74. Ditto for coupla trips for daughter's college
visit & orientation in '75.

Aircraft flew 400 to 500 hrs per year.

While the airframe had only accumulated 35,496 flight hours prior to the
accident, those hours were over 89,680 flight cycles (a flight cycle is
defined as a takeoff and a landing), owing to its use on short
flights.^[3]

This is in regard to the 737 that lost a big part of its roof just aft of
the cockpit and yet managed to land safely.

Yep. Awesome airplane!

'Still a "young" airframe with only 15,000, or so, hours. I read that some

Pocket the insurance money, and either buy some Paintless Dent Removal
tools and do some learning, or hire the best local PDR guy you can find.

It's amazing what they can do, without stud welders or body filler.
If the paint won't buff out after PDR, well, you can worry about that
after the dent is gone, just make sure the insurance check covers the cost
of a proper paint fix.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NZ66maigfk

I never knew they did hard creases until recently. I wish I'd called one
of them or bought the tools before I cracked the paint on the right fender
of my 2017 Chevy two weeks ago. My creased fender is probably still
fixable with PDR tools but the paint has already been cracked loose and
it's impossible to match/blend metallic paint so it'll always be visible
to some extent.

Since it closed as USAF Sondrestrom Air Base in Sep '92, the Greenlanders
have promoted it heavily as an all-season resort - hiking, camping, fishing,
hunting, boating, cross-country skiing, exploring ice cap and glaciers,
snowmobiling, dog sledding, etc. 'Seem to be doing quite well at it, too.
You should go; fantastically beautiful summers; many interesting and
beautiful sights year-round.

Suburban amenities? Well, I certainly never thought of it quite like that,
but it does seem to have plenty of hotel space now (former military
barracks/dorms); hot and cold running water; coupla restaurants; adequate
transportation ("school" buses throughout the "village"/air field), busses
for transport to edge of ice cap/glaciers, etc.

That's interesting, Wilton. If you interrupt the coriolis severely enough it
will stop and then re-form a variable time later, won't it?
That makes me wonder if you exploded a number of those huge bombs the AF now
has in the walls of a hurricane coriolis; say from a flight of the planes
you flew; if that would break up the hurricane? It would be an interesting
experiment anyway unless it's already been tried.

Gerry

Yes, by by swirling my hand around the hole in clockwise direction, I was
able to overcome the counterclockwise rotation caused by the Coriolis effect
and make the pool rotate clockwise temporarily. Each time, after I stopped
swirling by hand, the rotation would slowly stop (not abruptly) and return
to its natural, counterclockwise state.

As for nukedet in a hurricane, I think its hot, rising column of hot air
would create localized tornadic-like action soon (well, eventually, anyway)
to be overcome by the much larger system as long as it has an energy source
such as a large, warm body of water beneath it.

[MBZ] Irma & coriolis

2017-09-09 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

'Just happen to have written a "dissertation" on the subject coupla years
ago. Here it is:

ANOTHER NATURAL WONDER - CORIOLIS DEMO:

By Wilton Strickland

About one mile due south of the parking ramp and control tower and across
the Watson River at Sondrestrom Air Base (Kangerlussuaq), Greenland, is a
small area laced with a "spider web" of small, shallow streams that
constitute the outflow from Lake Ferguson. (Google Earth Kangerlussuaq)
The area is on a plateau between the lake and the river and is covered with
thick, low-growth tundra. Several times on warm and sunny Saturday or
Sunday afternoons in the short summer of 1978, I walked around in the area
of the streams enjoying the gurgling, cold, clear water as it rushes
slightly down slope to the river. At the edge of the plateau above the
river, the water cascades down a cliff-like bank, but, up on the plateau,
the several streams are only a couple of inches deep and one can easily walk
amongst them, step over them, etc. While walking amongst the streams, I
noticed a very interesting phenomenon in the rock bottom of one of the
streams - water was rushing in a rapid, counterclockwise swirl into a round
hole in the bottom about one inch in diameter - a beautiful example and
demonstration of the Coriolis effect, which causes fluids to flow in a drain
or rise in a column (a tornado, for example) in a counterclockwise manner in
the Northern Hemisphere and in the opposite direction in the Southern
Hemisphere. The cone-shaped swirl was so perfect rushing into the hole,
that I was able to tuck my finger deeply into the middle of the hole without
getting it wet. I tried to disrupt the counterclockwise motion and make it
swirl in a clockwise fashion by swirling my hand around the hole in a
clockwise direction to force the water to reverse is direction of flow. I
could get the swirl reversed, but it soon slowed and returned to its normal
counterclockwise direction after I stopped swirling it with my hand.

Actually, Coriolis affects all objects, not only fluids, on Earth when they
move from one point to another across the surface, within it and above it.
This effect appears greatest when the object moves directly north or south.
The effect and its apparent deflection of the moving object is caused by the
Earth's rotation and its spherical shape which leads to the Earth's surface
and objects on it having the highest west to east velocity at the equator;
and decreasing as distance from the equator increases. This velocity at the
equator is about 1,042 mph and decreases to zero at the poles. The entire
Earth's angular velocity is 15° per hour, but due to its diminishing size as
distance from the equator increases, the west-to-east surface velocity
decreases accordingly. An airplane, or anything for that matter, moving
North from any point, departs that point with the west-to-east,
Earth-induced velocity of the point - faster eastward than the ground
beneath it as it proceeds northward; it appears, therefore, to be deflected
eastward (to the right in the northern hemisphere). An airplane, or
anything, southbound in the Northern Hemisphere, has a SLOWER Earth-induced
eastward velocity than the ground beneath it as it proceeds southward. The
Earth beneath it is going eastward FASTER than the airplane's/object's
Earth-induced velocity; the airplane/object, then, appears, relative to the
Earth's surface, to be deflected to the right, again.

This same Coriolis effect is what causes hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes,
draining water, etc., in the Northern Hemisphere to rotate counterclockwise.
Rising columns of warmer air in thunderstorms, any low pressure area of
weather, draining fluids, etc., pull additional molecules of fluid
horizontally to fill the space vacated by the vertical movement of fluids.
Every molecule of fluid (air or water) in these situations that have any
north-south component to its vector (direction and magnitude of movement) is
deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere. (All of these directions
are, of course, reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.) Though the apparent
"force" on each molecule is infinitesimally small, the combination of them
all produces the cyclonic, counterclockwise motion that can be extremely
destructive and deadly when they form into a hurricane, typhoon or tornado.

Again, this apparent force applies to EVERYTHING moving from one point to
another on, in, or above the Earth. It applies not only to airplanes and
fluids in motion but also to balls, birds and bullets in flight and to our
cars and bicycles as we drive or ride along; it even applies to a person
walking or running. We never notice it, because "the force" (the apparent
deflection) is so small and we constantly correct for it by maintaining
contact, or repeated, cyclical contact with the Earth. 'Seems silly, but
let's imagine and analyze a person's walk, for example: As the rear foot is
moved forward, it has the west-to-east, Earth-induced

We had over 11” in one day a couple of weeks ago when the low pressure
system that never developed into a hurricane hovered over the west coast
of Florida. Not a big deal for the most part.

In a hurricane, unless you’re perilously close to the eye wall, rain comes
in “bands” as the arms of the hurricane pass over. That means the rain
isn’t a constant deluge, it comes and goes sometimes with hours in
between. For that matter, the weather can be weirdly pleasant between
these rain bands as well, with bright sun and clear skies.

So Max and I went to look at this car.

Good:
Interior pretty nice, some of the wood was coming loose
Original Becker radio, works
Dash good
Everything appears to be there
New battery
Started right up but idling very fast, maybe a missing return spring or
something, shut off fine so vac OK

Body straight, no visible dings
Respray at some point looked OK
Pretty clean

Not so good:
Pass door not closing well
AC belt missing so I guess NO ICE COLD
Respray at some point
Rust around side chrome trim
LR bottom of rear window rust hole, water in trunk
Rust at door bottoms
Rusty in front of pass wheel well under the hood in that flat area
Window rubber all dried and cracking
Engine bay needs a good cleaning but otherwise looked OK

I forgot to try the windows and other stuff
I didn't drive it to see how that might be
Spare looked like an original tire on a bundt

I offered the estate sales woman $1500, she was thinking $7k blahblah
million mile engine blahblah, she called the old guy and presented the
offer, he says he'll think about it and see if any others come in. He
didn't say hell no. If she gets back to me like Sat or Sun or something,
I'll go drive it and maybe offer $1200 for jerking me around and if there
is anything at issue with driving it. Car has apparently been sitting
awhile, so not been driven much. Other than the rust, it was a nice
looking car. If they get better offers then no problem for me.

I'm thinking If i can get it cheepcheep a BaT candidate with a bit of
detailing? Stupid money for it maybe? Quick flip?

"Well we'll be taking offers so come by and see what you think"

"Do you have some idea of what you're looking for on it?"

"I'm thinking $4000 or $5000 would be reasonable, it's one owner, always
maintained, it's in good condition"

coughcoughhchoke "Do you have the maintenance records?"

"Well the owner is dead, she died last year, but the man she was with
probably has all that"

"OK that would be good, might bump the value a bit"

"Well the engine in this car can go for a million miles, this one only has
236 thousand so it is just broken in. With a bit of cleaning and fix up
you could probably get 50 thousand dollars for it, we've seen these for
that much"

"Really?"

"Yes these are really desirable, and one owner it hasn't been abused, so
this is a rare gem, we think it is worth a lot. Come by and take a look
at it, see what you think."

"OK I probably will do that"

I did not ask why the guy wasn't cleaning it up himself to get the $50k,
maybe he is still grieving and can't stand the thought of touching her

As this car has minimal needs I may break down and just buy a new set of

Subject: [MBZ] Escape From Okie Acres

Added a new set of wheels to the collection this past weekend, courtesy of
Kaleb.

He spotted a nice 2002 E320 in Claremore on Craigslist. I tried several
times to contact the owner without success. Kaleb swung by one day and got
a look at the car after which I was finally able to speak to the owner.
After gathering more information from the owner, Kaleb was kind enough to
go back and check the car out in more detail for me. It passed muster, so
I arranged to purchase it and fly up to Tulsa to pick it up and drive it
home.

I flew up to Tulsa on Friday on Southwest via Houston. Pretty uneventful
until we were ready to push back and the captain comes on and says there
is a maintenance issue that will require us to deplane while they repair
it.

Three hours later we're finally on our way.

So I blow into Tulsa three hours late. Kaleb picked me up and we headed
over to the owner's house in Claremore. Checked out the car, swapped
plates, money and title and we're done. Swung by a Chili's and grabbed a
burger before hitting the road. Kaleb warned me about the toll roads down
to I-40, so of which did not have attendants and required exact change, of
which I had none. Kaleb was kind enough to give me 75 cents to get me
started and advised me to "just drive through, no one will stop you. After
the first one they have attendants that can make change."

Got through the first toll booth - 75 cents. Get to the next one and...
no attendant, just the bin you toss the money into. Hmm. This is out in
the boonies and there's no one around. so I just went on

The rest of the way they had attendants, so I could pay up. I asked the
attendant at the first toll booth if they had a means for collecting
missed tolls. She told me not to worry about it.

Made it to Russellville, AR Friday night/Saturday morning. Stopped at a
highly rated Super 8. Walked in, told the desk clerk, "I can go out to my
car and book a room for $65 right now. What will you book it for?"

"$50.00"

Done. I got some sleep and then was up at 6:30 and on the road by 7:00.
Despite bouts of heavy rain and interstate that resembled a parking lot
between Birmingham and Montgomery, AL, I made it back to Tampa about 12:30
am Sunday morning.

Thanks a bunch to Kaleb for helping out on this buy. It's a really nice
car and well cared for. I was telling the wife that I was surprised at how
little it needed as I made up my shopping list for the dealer last night.

Being that I was pretty tired on Sunday and the normal weekend stuff I had
to accomplish, it did not receive the full Martha treatment yet. It did
get an oil and filter change, air filter, cabin air filters and a well
deserved wash yesterday. I'll probably have at it as the week goes on.

Here's a link to a Flickr album of pictures. Some are from Kaleb's visit,
the rest are mine taken yesterday after washing the car.

So I replaced the bad run capacitor, contactor, and installed the new hard
start kit and it still would not run. After spending an hour going back
over everything and reviewing the photos I took before removing things I
then discovered the inside unit was not running either. The renters didn't
clue me in to this fact as I didn't go inside I was working outside. With
that knowledge I then went upstairs to the inside unit and it appeared to
have no power. I was about to throw in the towel and call a pro when I
decided to double check things. The control board appeared dead, had no
led lit like it should etc. we just had this replaced last year. So I
tested to see if I was getting power to the board, yes I was. Then I
discovered a 5 amp fuse. Bingo, it was blown. Ran down to flaps got a
pack, replaced it and she fired fight up. I am guessing when the capacitor
blew it must have tripped the fuse on the inside unit? Just guessing.
Anyway I imagine I saved myself untold hundreds of dollars on a service
call. They probably would have wanted to replace the board too. This time
of year I see all sorts of posts on Facebook from people who's ac quit and
I bet they spend a lot of money when it's really not that complicated.
There really is not a whole lot to one of these.

For the same reason that Ford Rangers have ridiculous resale values?

I agree that Mercedes shouldn't go chasing the abandoned market of small
truck users who are still mourning their rusted out LUVs, but somebody
ought to be making trucks for those who don't want a SUV but don't need a
F150 either.
LUVs, Couriers and the like were immensely popular in the 1970s, and the
reason for their existence hasn't gone away, has it?
