I don't know about automotive paint in the 1960s but maybe beige was one of the
colors that was good. Fade resistant (or at least you don't notice it as much),
easier or cheaper to make for some reason? Also most cars didn't have AC so
light colors were a bit cooler in the sun.

I think almost all that kind of stuff is vinyl now. You can do it on a computer
with software that has surface maps of any vehicle and does all the layout for
you, and feeds it to a CNC vinyl cutter.
Masking all that off and painting it by hand would be a ton of work.

Were the GM diesels turbocharged?
When I delivered pizza in the 1980s, one of the drivers had a diesel Chevy
Caprice. He never seemed to have issues with it, at least as far as I remember.

Kidding aside, with the variety of affected systems, sounds to me like it could
be a general low voltage symptom. Check battery, alternator, grounding points,
