Nice looking color, clean interior, and pretty low miles.

Re: [MBZ] the rare bi-color option 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240d,$4,500

2021-09-27 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If you look at the photo of the passenger door, notice how loose and wrinkled
the vinyl is? My 300SD has the same problem. I tried to correct it by removing
the door panel, and using 3M adhesive spray to stick it back on to the panel
smoothly. Looked good for a few weeks and then all came loose again.

Anyone know of a lasting repair for this?

In the same boat with my W116, been putting that off for too long.

Drove the Karmann Ghia a bit today. Such a fun little car. Not a lot of power
to be sure, but the suspension is taut and it's so light the steering is
effortless. Double checked the timing and carb balance, had to tweak the
right-hand carb just a bit. It's running pretty well now. Still seems a bit
starved for fuel when I put my foot down but getting better. I'm hoping that
Techron/Seafoam in the fuel will improve that up after a few tanks.

Re: [MBZ] OT: VDO mechanical clock cleaning/lubrication

2021-09-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Had the clock running on a battery for a week or so. It was consistently losing
about 1-2 minutes per hour. Tried the adjustment screw but it didn't make much
difference. Yesterday the clock completely stopped working. Apparently there's
an internal fuse but I had the thought of trying to find a quartz movement to
replace the guts of it. Anyone know of a shop that does that sort of
"modernization" of vintage car clocks?

Other option is to just use that spot on the instrument panel for something
else such as a cylinder head temperature gauge if I can find one. Any modern
radio I might install is going to give me a clock, I don't really need one on
its own.

2021-09-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have been sort of toying with the idea of looking into a Rotary as they are
made locally in Indiana. I would not ever approach the usage of a commercial
garage.

Even their scissor lift looks interesting, it looks like it would not have much
of an overhead minimum, and it doesn't block the vehicle doors like a post lift
can.

Re: [MBZ] OT health insurance

2021-09-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I pay $206.65/month for family coverage on a high-deductible plan with HSA.

Employer contributes $3,200 to HSA. Employee must contribute at least $300.

$5,400 deductible then 80% coverage (20% coinsurance)

$6,800 out of pocket max.

Must use a specific provider network. No coverage otherwise, except for
emergencies.

I guess it's pretty good comparitively. Offset by the rather unremarkable pay
for a university staff position.

The other thing is in their network you have to plan WAY ahead. Many providers
are not accepting new patients and the ones that are, are booking 3-6 months
ahead of time for appointments.

Re: [MBZ] The job offer

2021-09-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
When I worked for a small company about 10 years ago that is what they did.
This was pre-ACA, so no idea how it works now.

In lieu of providing health insurance they gave us a stipend and we could go
out and buy an individual policy. I had an Anthem Individual policy through a
broker. My employer paid the stipend to the insurance company directly and that
made the stipend non-taxable.

The last time I had a job with one week of PTO it was McDonald's.

That's just really low especially if it's also your sick time.

Looks nice, wish it were closer.

Possibly some rust showing at the bottom of the fender/rocker area.

Re: [MBZ] How to jumpstart an Airbus?

2021-09-20 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Very rare to lose both engines in flight. So rare as "not supposed to happen in
the service life of the aircraft" if it were to happen it would be from
something like contaminated fuel, a significant maintenance error, or massive
foreign object ingestion in both engines. If an engine flames out at altitude I
believe the windmilling from the airstream gives it enough rotation for a
relight, though I stand to be corrected. Aircraft can generally depart with the
APU inop so it is not critical for any anticipated in-flight emergencies.

Surprising. When I was a kid we had "Easter Vacation" in the spring but some

The only way those old VWs ever had real heat was if they had the gas heater

interior. Always seemed like either a carbon monoxide or fire risk (or both) to

A friend of mine in high school had a clapped-out Scirocco that he had removed
the FI from and installed a carburetor. I gather was a pretty common
home-mechanic approach to dealing with FI problems before engines got so
computerized that it was no longer possible.

Neighbors growing up had a green, late '60s Type III. I assume it was
carbureted but don't know for sure. Pretty cool car, it had rust perforation by
the mid 1970s and they traded it for a Chevy Vega -- a downgrade IMO.

Re: [MBZ] OT: VDO mechanical clock cleaning/lubrication

2021-09-13 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Yeah I set it to the correct time and I'll let it run overnight. If it's not
too far off in the morning I'll probably just leave it alone. I need to clean
the glass and bezel like I did the fuel gauge.

The ticking seems to be a bit stronger and more evenly now. Maybe it needed a
few cycles to get the spring wound a bit.

[MBZ] OT: VDO mechanical clock cleaning/lubrication

2021-09-13 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Looking at the clock in my Ghia. It is a VDO "Kienzle" clock. I thought it was
not working, but problem seemed mainly poor grounding. I removed it from the
car and hooked it up to 12V. It's ticking like an old style windup clock, and
the hands are moving at least somewhat. Not sure how accurately yet. The
ticking seems to slow down and speed up a bit, cyclically.

Every two minutes or so there sort of a clunk which I think is the spring being
wound.

I found an article about how to open it up and common problems. It suggested
"spray the entire mechanism with WD-40" which I'm pretty sure is a bad idea.

Probably a case of "leave well enough alone" if it keeps reasonably accurate
time. But wondering what I would use to clean and then lubricate the mechanism
if it came to that.

Keeping your '83 240D on the road for nearly 40 years as an alternative to the
environmental impact of producing the 6 or 8 (or more) cars most people would
own in that span of time is probably more "green" that driving a new EV.
