Yes, I have a corded model made by Fein (maybe the original maker of the type?)
and they are great for flush cuts and fine trim work, not sure I'd think of
reaching for it if I needed to cut openings in 3/4" subfloor but it would
probably get the job done.

I bought this one:

https://www.harborfreight.com/80v-brushless-cordless-18-in-chainsaw-tool-only-56937.html

Between the saw and the battery and charger I could have bought a decent
gas-powered saw but I don't use them often enough and always end up having
hassles with old fuel, difficult starting, etc.

The battery electric are nice in that regard, just pop in the battery and go.

I got mine when they were offering a deal on the batteries.

I got one of those grinders when they were on sale for $9.99. I figured if I

I bought a Hercules battery powered impact driver and built a deck with it last

I have an Atlas battery powered chain saw, and an electric push mower, and both

I have had to return one or two of their ratchet wrenches, but never a problem

Always wanted a manual in my 300D. Settled for shifting between "S" and "D" as
needed.

Turbo is a bit slow to spool up on these, so you'd need to learn to not let the
RPMs fall too much during shifts.

Yes, but I discovered the reason this was happening. There is a rubber block in
the accelerator linkage, located roughly above the injection pump. I assume
it's there to absorb vibration. Years ago the rubber had separated from the
metal plate it mounts to. When this happens, there is a lot of slop introduced
into the linkage, and you get about 50% throttle reponse (if that), plus
incorrect transmission shifting as the linkage that controls the transmission
shift points is also tied in to the throttle linkage.

I reattached that rubber block with Shoe Goo, and it worked fine for a long
time. Tuesday night driving home I suddenly lost most of the throttle response.
I pulled over and checked it, and sure enough it had separated in the same
place again. Must have been loose for some time and finally broke all the way.

This time I used some epoxy putty my wife bought when I asked her to pick up a
container of plumbers putty. Figured I might as well use it for something. It's
holding so far, and acceleration and shift points are much improved, but the
rubber is so old I am not expecting it to last. I wonder if this part is still
available. Otherwise I might have to fabricate something by cutting up a big
rubber stopper or some other piece of rubber. I don't know what would be best
to glue it in place though.

[MBZ] air strut resealing

Apparently it's possible to re-seal the airmatic struts with JB Weld or other

Process described here (this is a PDF attachment at Benzwhirled)

www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/w220-s-class/321085d1279940284-airmatic-strut-epoxy-fix-_summary-epoxy-fix-airmatic-front-strut

That appears to be for a W220, would this be substantially the same as a W211
in regards to the airmatic struts?

I'm back at trying to diagnose why the front left of the E500 sinks within a
few hours of shutting off.

I think if the reservoir tank were leaking down it would affect the whole car
not just one corner?

I'm guessing a leak in that strut but still trying to rule out other causes.

Not an engineer, but I did build a bridge out of balsa wood in high school
physics

Anyway, the deal with these truss bridges is that the truss through compression
and tension on its frame transfers the load of the bridge to the support piers.
Once that framework has any substantial failure, the forces overwhelm the rest
of it and the whole thing comes down.

[MBZ] Fiat vs Tesla

2024-03-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Was in Denmark last week visiting family. It's a small country and I was paying
for the trip out of my own pocket so I rented the smallest cheapest car listed,
which was a Citroen C1 but I ended up being given a Fiat 500. It's actually not
a bad little car for buzzing around in but is not going to win any drag races.
It was made a little more fun to drive by having a 6-speed manual transmission.
As James May said, the fun thing about a small underpowered car is that you can
drive them at the limit of their performance all the time. I woudn't mind
having one but it would be tough to swallow paying >$16k for a new one. It does
have reasonably comfortable room for 4 but is so small that it doesn't have
much other utility. Though people do apparently pull small trailers with them
as I saw a lot of them around (and other cars of similar size) with tow
hitches. That would be really unusual to see here in the USA.

My cousin drives an A-class Mercedes diesel. His youngest son has a new Tesla
Model Y which I also got to drive. I have never driven a Tesla or any EV other
than a golf cart so that was interesting. They are nice enough cars but I don't
think I'd want one in the USA. Distances are too long and charging points still
too sparse at least in the rural midwest where I live.

In my experience batteries go from "works fine" to "won't hold a charge/start
the car" very quickly without much warning. That's mostly with conventional
batteries though, I don't have much experience with AGM batteries.

On the other hand if it’s not leaking I might just leave it alone.

[MBZ] Don't you love when a 30 minute job turns into four hours

2024-03-11 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Wife's car (VW Jetta) has been alerting (annoyingly) about the oil level
sensor. It was intermittent and has slowly gotten to the point that it was
alerting every few minutes while driving. Code was "intermittent implausible
value" so I assumed the sensor had failed, as that is my experience with VWs.
Sensors fail.

Ordered one from FCP Euro, watched a YouTube video, easy enough job: drain the
oil, disconnect the sensor, remove three nuts holding the sensor in place, pull
it out, put the new one in, reconnect, refill the oil. Looked like it should
take 30 minutes max.

I had considered that the problem might be a bad connection but the connector
was in place, not loose or damaged. So I went ahead with the sensor
replacement. As I was reconnecting it, out of the corner of my eye I noticed
what looked like a cut in the split-tube cover on the wiring. Sure enough,
there was a cut. How in the heck it happened I don't know. The car has a splash
guard so nothing could have snagged it. I change the oil with the extractor so
I've never had the splash guard off until today. I guess at some point someone
had it off and managed to snag it or slice it and cut into one of the wires.

So I didn't need the sensor, but at this point I've already installed it and
it's all oily so I can't send it back.

I soldered the wire back together and covered the splice with heat shrink
tubing.

Then I notice that oil is dripping from the drain plug. It was dry when I
removed it, and I had torqued it back to spec so what the heck. I tightened it
up more and more until I started to get a little uncomfortable. It has one of
those sealing washers that was pressed on so you can't easily remove it. So I
decided to run to Autozone and get a new drain plug and washer. Drain oil
again, install new plug, refill, and it's still leaking. I finally just kept
tightening it about 1mm at a time until it finally stopped.

Kicking myself for not looking at the wiring more carefully. Would not have had
to drain the oil or change the sensor and would have saved a lot of time if I
had only noticed that cut first.

Good move I think, you will have more utility with a conventionally fueled
vehicle. Battery tech, range, and availability of rapid charging on the road is
just not anywhere near even diesel in most areas.

I have actually considered an EV for local commute/errands but I don't like the

It's still an 18 year old car with the smaller engine option. Boring colors

I have been driving my W116 300SD more since the E500 has the suspension issue.
It's got a turbo and it's still slow. Especially the way the transmission wants

end up shifting manually and using the kickdown switch a lot.

Does it have airmatic suspension? I have been reading about it with the issues
I'm having and I noted this:

Dampers - ~ 115,000 Miles

These are simple and as they age there will be a noticeable degradation of
the ride quality. You might also notice side-to-side body motion that's not
controlled as well as pitching and diving.

Re: [MBZ] E500 slammed on front left

2024-02-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Also I noticed they sell a pressure tester.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/air-suspension-pressure-tester-cta-5171

That reminded me I also have an HF compression testing set somewhere, I wonder
if I could adapt that.

If I disconnect the air line from the top of the strut, connect pressure gauge
there and fill with compressed air from my garage air compressor, I should be
able to see if the strut is leaking down? That would isolate the leak to the
strut and not somewhere else in the system? Does that make sense or would that
not work for some reason?

Asked FCPEuro for any guidance, they suggested checking the valve block
carefully for leaks but otherwise sounds like strut replacement.

Do they need to be replaced in pairs, other than assuming if one is starting to
leak the other is probably not far behind?
