Re: [MBZ] 2006 E500 4Matic - 105k miles - $2,200

2022-08-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yeah I’d be all over that. Moab about what a big deal it is blah blah and get
it for less. Get a scanner if you go look at it, sometimes it might be
something else that would show up like a leaky connection but if the strut is
blown you can get an Arnott and pop it in. No big deal, maybe $350? I haven’t
looked at them, do that before you go.

Prevailing wisdom is to do both at same time as the other one will probably
blow out before long but who knows. You might be able to find one at a junkyard
too for like $50 or less if you want to go cheap.

The systems are quite straightforward, compressor in left forward wheel well,
distribution block there then air lines running to each front and a
distribution block/valve in rear with a leveling link to work the valve. Each
strut has a sensor that tells the nanny what’s going on.

[MBZ] S550 fits

2022-08-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Been trying to start it and no start. Showing no comms with transmission
although i moved it last week. Says not in park.

I scanned it today with the DAS fancy computer and pretty much confirmed what
the Icarsoft said yesterday. I jiggled some fuses and relays around and LO! got
it to start, ran fine. Wouldn’t go into gear although the DAS said the shifter
was working. I don’t know what that’s about, there’s a trans warning on the IC.
Ran it for awhile and shut it off and tried to start it again and nothing.

I’m thinking the battery has about had it. Voltages looked low , below 12V
although when it was running I was getting 13.5 so the alternator was working.
MB battery no idea how old. Guess it’s time to get another battery and see if
that cures the ills. The nannies don’t like low volts.

Good work! You learned something with all that sweat and effort!

I think my CL has some LED replacement bulbs in the headlights. They work fine
but I get a whole bunch of warning messages on the instrument cluster. Might be
some in the taillights as well. I haven’t chased them down yet since everything
works but the nannies are Not Happy.

I guess newer cars have LEDs so the new replacements will work straightaway but
I wonder why there are no adaptations from the bulb manufacturers for backwards
compatibility.

Power? Or +12V measured with a multi-megohm input impedance meter?
(Zero current, essentially.) Chances are it's got a pullup system,
 looking for
the load of bulbs to draw signals to ground so that the car can do lamp-out
 checking, and trailer-plugged-in checking, etc.

Re: [MBZ] Trailer Wiring Confusion - ML550

2022-08-13 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The 7pin should be a standard pin out (duh) as should the 4pin (duh). The issue
seems to be in the adapter if you are getting proper power at the 7 socket on
the car. Did you measure continuity on the adapter between the proper in<->out
pins/sockets? Or plug it in then work the lights, brakes, and turn signals?
Do you know for sure the trailer works?

OK, I get that the W164 has an OE trailer wiring system - my ML550 has the
towing package option. Here’s my issue:

The stock plug on the vehicle is a round, 7 pin connector, fairly common.
I got a 4 pin to 7 pin adapter from the Island of Large Wimmen so that I
could use a UHaul trailer today.

The adapter has LEDS on it to show the condition of each circuit. They
were lit, but for some reason beyond my comprehension at the time I was
trying to get the trailer set up two of them were lit, meaning (more or
less) that the signals coming into the adapter were not *quite* right.
That, and when using brakes, turn signals or running lights, nothing
 worked.

I found 20A fuse #70, which is for the towing module/system, blown. I
replaced it and it didn’t blow a second time, but I still didn’t get the
proper signals out of the adapter.

At this point, pre-diagnostics since I just got things home, I’m going to
assume the adapter ain’t right. I’ve also got to find a pinout diagram for
the socket on the car to see what is what and check for the proper signals
 there.

I’m guessing the adapter is the culprit.

While I’m making assumptions, I presume I should be getting straight 12VDC
signals for each light circuit out of the 7 pin socket on the chassis,
correct? I see where a lot of people have had to use adapters for “light
out” or LED systems to make things right, but the UHaul trailer was a
 straight incandescent lamp setup.

I’m pulling it into the garage in a bit to do some troubleshooting. Lucky
for me, the UHaul guys let me take the trailer as-is because they didn’t
have a 20A blade fuse in their shop (this is a company store with a big
hitch installation shop, really??) and I just drove it that way. It was a
4x8 trailer, so my taillights were clearly visible even when I had it
 loaded, so no biggie.

 More as I know it.

I tried to take Amfrak once, got to the station and they had no tikkies. It was

a few $$ more to rent a car and get directly to my destination. Guy from the

[MBZ] CL500 fuel efficiency

2022-08-05 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Added more fuel today and got almost another mile per gallon, up to 19.9 from
19. I am very surprised. I have not been babying it. Going on a little road
trip this weekend and will see how it does with mostly highway miles

185.8 9.8 18.96
221.2 11.1 19.9

I also discovered the car is equipped with soft close doors but they aren’t
working. I’ll have to look into that.

I bought a toaster convec oven air fryer thing last year from Amazon “used” or
“return” or whatever but it came in a plain white box and was new. Mechanical
controls. Turns out this was a discontinued model, Costco have the newer
electronic version but same innards. Cuisinart I think. Toasts fine but I also
use the convec oven and air fryer a lot. The air fryer is life changing. Fish
and veggies in 12-13 min, regular oven takes 45 min for veg and the fish is the
absolute best. Price was a lot more than just a cheap toaster oven, even
discounted, but it has been a really great appliance.

I should take a look at the S550 plugs at some point.

Was 95F when I got there at 4P then dropped down to 91F when I left at 7P. It
wasn’t too bad as there was some breeze. I kinda like it warm too. I hadn’t
mowed in a few weeks and we had some big rains a coupla weeks ago which really
stimulated the grass. I should have baled some and sold it to the horsey

Yes the ramps have a well. No way to chock the wheels. Parking brake was set.
Jack stands. The wood under the front wheels and blocks under the rockers
would support the car at least to where one wouldn’t get crushed though might
generate a clean-up situation in the trouser area.

We did give it a rock and no movement. But I take your point.

Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes SL500 - 65k miles - $9,500

2022-07-25 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There was a woman on a FB group in eastern NC with a SLK that needed
hydraulics. Mech quoted something like $5k. She didn’t know what to do, was
looking for a mech who might know what to do. I suggested she look at top
hydraulics and talk to the shop in Chapel Hill, decide if the job was worth
outsourcing or DIY. She said her husband was moderately competent. Heard
nothing more.

It’s a shame these cars cost more to fix at a mech than it’s worth putting into
them. I was just talking to a friend today about the CL500. The PO was tired of
throwing money at it with no resolution. My grand total cost for getting it
fixed was 2 fuses and some electrons to charge the battery. I sent her a text
the other day and told her I had it on the road and it was working great, she
was very happy to know that.

Oh well, I guess more fodder for us fools. The $900E350 will get sorted soon,
the $900E500 needs a new wheel for the new tire and it will be back on the road
again. Both after POs being quoted $ks to put in new transmissions.

The headlights are the kind that come on when the car is on. What’s that
callEd, DRO or DRL or something? I think they might either be some super
bright bulbs as they look kinda blue or LEDs that are causing a fault. But they
work. I’ll leave good enough alone.

I’ll have to look and see if I can shut that always-on “feature” off with the
fancy computer. It annoys me.

I’ll dig into the taillights at some point and figure out how to remove them.
The RF corner marker fixture in the bumper is broken and the bulb was burned
out, I thought I had some but didn’t find any. The fixture is cheap enough on
eBay or AliExpress.

[MBZ] Well that was easy — locks on CL500

2022-07-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There is a pneumatic pump that both blows and sucks to open/close the doors and
trunk. German electromechanical engineering at its finest. 20A fuse was blown.
It was working then it quit so a new fuse cured it. The key fob now opens and
closes doors and opens trunk. (I need to order a new fob shell as this one is
worn out). I used the blade key earlier to open driver door at Costco which of
course set off the alarm which was loud as hell. I should kill that thing.

BTW I ordered a 250 piece fuse kit off Amazon that showed up just before I
started this job (which was somewhat contorted because I had locked the
passenger door and the fuse panel is behind the passenger seat under the rear
seat and I had to climb in from the driver side, it is tight in the back) so I
could CHANGE THE FUSE. the kit has a bunch of the bigger blade fuses and the
smaller ones in various sizes. Should keep me going for awhile. It was not
expensive, good to have around in the tool kit.

I’m getting error messages for lights, some of which appear to be working.
H. Some for bulbs in the tail lights which are not intuitively removable.
I’ll have to research that. Also says a low beam headlight but it is working. I
wonder if someone put in some funky bulbs. And the switch must be a replacement
as it does not pull out for fogs and rear bright taillight. Weird.

This car has headlight squirters that appear to be more like car wash sprayers.
I think the nozzles are buggered up as they sprayed the hood and fenders. Not
that I need them but interesting feature.

[MBZ] CL500 progress

2022-07-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Got plates today! Drove it up the road to the hardware store to get screws for
the license plate and the trunk lock assembly. It moves along with alacrity!
AC was BLOWING ICE COLD and all seemed ok, ABC suspension giving a warning but
seems to be working ok now. ABC Sport setting is solid, was shaking me in the
driveway. So turned that off and it was better.

The steering wheel buttons started working! So was able to cycle through
settings for the instrument cluster and lighting delay etc. it is fairly
rudimentary what it will display but there is some useful info.

The trunk release was working now it won’t, it’s some over engineered
electro-vacuum thing but it seems it is easy to repair. I can get it open with
the blade key.

I discovered it has staggered tire sizes front/back, I’m not sure if the wheels
are different widths or what, all the tires/wheels are 18”. No indication in
the specs so maybe these wheels were put on after. They are factory wheels
though. Interesting.

Going to do more polishing now.

[MBZ] Clay bar on the CL500

2022-07-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I did clay bar on the rest of the CL this evening. Used a bucket of water with
some car wash detergent to rinse it and help lube it while rubbing down the
car.

I went to U Tube U to watch how the whole polishing process is done, not a lot
of learning curve other than to keep the pad moving and enough polish on it,
you can see how it’s going so that’s not hard. Do a smallish area then move on
to another one and overlap.

It’s amazing how the bar feels at first, like rubbing the clay over sandpaper
but it soon gets the rough off and it had this brown stuff on it that looked
like sandpaper gets on it when you sand old varnish. After a few passes the
paint feels nice and smooth and no more of that stuff comes off. The sides of
the car did not have a lot of initial roughness as you’d expect, not a lot of
fallout goop on them.

Washed the car with a shaggy sponge thing to get any residue off and it
actually looked some better already.

I did the whole deal polishing (“paint correction“) on the hood already, it
looks really good. I’ll get to the rest of the car in next coupla days with the
RO buffer, compounds, final waxing. I have some meguiars “cleaner wax” that
works well, I’m not sure how it differs from regular paste wax.

I bought a meguiars kit off Amazon with the 3 polishing compounds and some clay
bars. This bar I used is probably shot after one car as it was starting to get
a little crumbly but it can probably be used a bit more. I got an inexpensive
RO variable speed buffer (“Avid Power”), it seems to be a decent unit, feels
quite solid and has good torque to spin the pads. It came with some buffer
pads but I also got another kit of various kinds. There is some color code to
them for increasing fineness, I can’t really tell the difference but I follow
the instructions.

This is a great way to get a car looking really nice and is quite gratifying.
Takes some time but it’s worth it.
