[MBZ] Compare 190D 2.2 auto 300TD

2008-02-18 Thread Chris Kueny
Has anyone here driven both a 190D 2.2 auto and a 1985 300TD? I currently
drive the 1985 300TD and am considering a car I have never driven. Is the
190D 2.2 even slower than the wagon? There a 190D in Greensboro NC with
200,000 miles for around $2500.

What are these cars worth?

I went to Sears with the hope I'd find US made stuff too. All the socket
sets and wrenches were made in China. I walked out with my money in my
pocket. I talked to someone there and they said no one will pay for the
 US
made stuff now. I said I'm standing here with my money in hand, don't I
count? Their reply was the stuff made in China has a life time warranty
(which to me is the same as saying one use) and then bring it back. I
 said
that would be fine providing my time was worth the same per hour as the
 guy
who made the tool, however.given the fine quality of most products
 made
in China, and their attention to quality control, think I'll just spring
 for
the US made stuff. Yeah, it cost more, but when I factor everything in,
 the
cheap stuff ends up being just way too expensive!

Hey, any of you SEARs guys reading any of these posts and taking note??

In my 2002 Subaru 2.5 Legacy Wagon, the tube from my 'Suck-Up' does not

'Read a Click and Clack column today in which they vehemently deride
sucking oil changes. They also imply that garages who charge for
sucking are scamming. Obviously they don't know that it's the preferred
way to change MB oil, removing more oil than by draining. They're
concerned
that it doesn't get all the oil and leaves sludge. Of course, if you
use

a good and proper oil and suck it hot, you don't have and don't leave
sludge. Of course, also, if the suction tube doesn't reach bottom of the
pan the way the dipstick tube does in an MB, sucking can leave significant
oil. Anybody know if dipstick tubes in other engines reach bottom of pan
like MB?

Wilton (who uses $2 sucker and has confirmed on 3 of my MBs that sucking
removes more than sucking - removing drain plugs on them after completing
the sucking produced not a single drip from the drain holes.)

Re: [MBZ] Manual battery boost

2007-04-08 Thread Chris Kueny
I don't think you understand the basic assumption upon which his question is
based. The unspoken assumption is that the initial effort to move the motor
from where it has been sitting to any new position will break some kind of
sealing that might have taken place as the engine cooled and the oil
viscosity increased. The rotation is not to start the motor, only to
relieve the starter and battery of the effort to make the initial movement.

I don't know if the assumption is true or not, but it is interesting. I
would bet, though, that the use of Mobil 1 would make the assumption false,
as it wouldn't stiffen at lower temperatures.

Was wondering if anyone has ever tried this: In cold weather,
 attempting to
start a manual tranny diesel: Before doing anything else: pushing the
vehicle a few feet and then popping the clutch out in first gear (or
 reverse
might be geared lower?), thus hopefully achieving some engine rotation
 (and
thereby relieving the starter of the task of lurching the near-frozen
 engine
into motion)? Then proceeding with the appropriate starting procedure?

I used to do this with my motorcycle, thinking I was helping the
 battery not
have work so hard to get the engine turning on cold mornings.

I think it is Toyotas stringent quality control that has helped it be the

Therein lies the problem of the western auto makers, unions demand more

[MBZ] Noise from the rear

2007-02-02 Thread Chris Kueny
My 1985 300TD has a noise coming from the rear, which I had my indy 'fix' last
year. It has the following traits: It is clearly in time with speed, and
sounds like hammering. It is most pronounced on hard acceleration, goes almost
away while coasting, and if I decelerate, it also is loud, but somewhat
different. Finally, it seems too slow to be the wheel, and I am hoping someone
will tell me it is obviously the flex disc, The indy said my right rear brake
was sticking, and rebuilt the caliper. It sounds like it is coming from the
passenger's side, but if it were the flex disk, is it possible that the muffler
would shield that sound from the drivers side? Last year I took a very good
hard look and detected nothing out of order, hence the indy. It started back
shortly after I got it back, then went away for most of the summer/fall.
Anyone have an idea? Or some tests I can do to narrow down the problem?
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

In Columbia, I posted this when it happened, the Sheriff declared a woman a
hero for shooting a guy in the butt when he tried to take her car. In fact,
she fired 5 times. Although she did technically 'discharge a firearm within
the city limits', there was no mention of any charges against her. In fact,
there wasn't even any grumbling from anyone about it. And Columbia is a
majority Democratic city. I think for the most part, the Democrats are
tired of losing elections due to the gun issue. Atlanta may be different
because you have a majority Black population, and gun violence is much more
of an issue in the Black community.

[MBZ] Benz ads

2007-01-29 Thread Chris Kueny
Today's Columbia newspaper had 5 classified ads for Mercedes. The first one
was for a 1984 300D for 5 grand. the others ranged from 1996-2006. The thing
I found interesting was that all of them were diesels. Just a fluke I guess.

Hi Bill,
When certain people want to pass more restrictive gun laws they always say,
Why do you need a gun? If a crime occurs just call the police! Well,
duh - Bill just found out why that's absurd. Some of us would like to see
our lives protected *before* our throat is cut! But we're expected to turn
over the protection of our lives and possessions to a police force that
can't be bothered to protect us (I know it;s not our policeforce's fault).
They don't even want to fill out the freakin' paperwork!

Now, Bill is going to lose the value of his car as well as his time to get
it fixed or the time needed to replace it depending on his choice of
repair/replace.

This comes at a time when Az is considering legislation making it illegal
for someone to observe someone doing something illegal while armed - in
other words - the Minutemen who are trying to stem the flow of illegals
crossing the border are being sent a message - don't come to help guard the
border if you plan on being able to defend yourself should you be attacked.

Could things get *more* ridiculous? Why are there people in this country
hell-bent on turning our personal security over to a police force that is
over-worked, under-paid, ill-equipped, etc., etc. ??

Geez. And, Bill - I'm truely sorry a crowd of nitwits had nothing better to
do than destroy your property. They should be picking up trash along the
highway - or shoveling snow from same highway -one little shovel-ful at a
time.

Why can't our politicians think of this kind of solution?

So sorry about the car. That is sort of thing that I am sure all of us
worry about with our much loved cars. Frustrating as it is to discover
 the
limits of actual 'enforcement' [I caught someone breaking into my car and
got a description, plate #, abandoned tools and hair sample stuck to the

Instead of looking at the negative side of this (which is easy to do) I
am looking at the positive side of this entire ordeal.

1. I wasn't hurt

3. The transmission is fine

4. I did not break down in the mountains of East TN

5. I was VERY tempted to not stop and spend the night in

the internet has killed any capacity for coverup. in the old days,
the manufacturer could always say that your problem is some sort of
strange anomaly. perhaps you drive funny?

while most companies remain fundamentally unaware of the internet, we
now know when they are flat out lying to us, instead of just having
suspicions and doubts as before.

i have a 2 year old $2,000 omega watch. it's running slow about 15
seconds a day over roughly hte past year, which isn't all the horrible
for mechanical watch, but certainly unacceptable for a watch of this
class that used to run to within a second a day. because of the
internet, i know of very many specific examples of this happening. I
also know that people in the USA who contact omega are referred to an
authorized US Omega service center and are basically blown off and
told to accept this problem as normal and typical. I also know that
those who have sent their watch back to the manufacturer in Bienne,
Switzerland requested that this issue be addressed have had the
escapment replaced and hte problem solved at no cost to them.

the internet is just a nightmare for these folks and they will soon be
unable to survive relying on their traditional method of control
through disinformation. they just mostly don't know it yet.

QC vs German QC. The Germans accept a certain amount of bad cars, and
try

like heck to catch them and fix them before shipping them, while the
Japanese see any bad car as a problem in the process, and find a way to
fix

the process so that problem just doesn't happen anymore. Have I got that
right?

I'm not sure about Japanese vs. German, but the Japanese were much
quicker to pick up on statistical process control methods than Americans
were. To put it very simply, if you imagine the specifications a
product has to meet as two vertical lines on a graph, and the actual
values of products coming off the line as a bell curve, American
companies would focus on finding the finished items that were in the
tails outside the specs and reworking them to make them good; while
Japanese companies would focus on refining the process to narrow the
curve so the tails were smaller and more of the finished product
landed inside the specs to begin with. This is the basis of statistical
process control...you measure and graph things so you know where your
actual output is compared to the specs. Is the average too high or too
low? Is there too much variation? This has to be applied to the whole
manufacturing process, from gaskets and bolts on up.

W. Edwards Deming was a big advocate of statistical process control. He
had very limited success convincing American companies to change how
they did business, but after WWII he traveled to Japan. People there
listened, and the rest is history.

plug the new one in, then I will have a useable end to plug the new sensors

Umm... There are a couple of parts there; there are sensor wires- one
inserted in each pad, that run to a connector block, these are trivial to
replace; then there is the wiring harness, which has one end bolted to the
caliper and the other end is somewhere in the bowels of the wiring harness
within the vehicle. If a sensor wire was snapped, thats easy. If the
other wire was destroyed ick.

You are also required to use an approved

disconnect that uncouples your generator if the grid power fails. They
are expensive. You cannot use a simple volt/amp measurement trigger,
because you will be measuring your own generator's output and may not
detect a power failure of the grid in a timely manner.

-Dave Walton

Re: [MBZ] Octane and detonation....

2007-01-07 Thread Chris Kueny
If I were Kaleb, I would preface this with 'Bzzzt, wrong.' But I am not so
I won't.

The Lister engines available from India today use no spark. You open a
valve to relieve compression, turn the heavy flywheel until you get some
stored inertial energy, close the valve and open the fuel start injecting
fuel. Keep turning the wheel until it starts. No gasoline, no spark. I
hope to get one once I have a spare $1500, engine hoist, and coupla weeks
for a new hobby. Paired with a gen head, and running on 50-50
diesel/recycled veggie oil, you could save a bit on electricity. If we had
net billing here.

See www.utterpower.comfor all the details.

Chris K
Cayce, SC

Lister cylcle engines use compression ignition by atomizing diesel fuel
into the air and igniting it by compression of the mixture AND a spark,
not by injection, which is why they must be started on gasoline with a
spark ignition. Low compression, to say the least.

At one time, the mount of gas, diesel, etc extracted from a barrel of oil
depended on the oil. At that time, diesel as almost a waste product. But
through modern cracking reformulation processes, the refineries can
choose
what they get out of a barrel you can get more gas per gallon of crude
oil
than diesel. It also doesn't help that diesel is taxed more per gallon

gas.

of Mercedes people bring their cars to RustyQ to meet each other and
show off their cars and they are all dirty. Ok that green 200D looked
pretty clean. Have you folks heard of car washes or a bucket and
sponge. I know, I am the most anal person around about keeping my car
clean, so I should based this on my experience. But, gosh those are some
dirty cars. Hursty's car looked pretty clean, I guess.

the gateway store was dismal. dirty. disorganized. the sales staff was
unhappy and unhelpful. the tech guys were bewildered and overwhelmed trying
to keep the junk working.

so i explained my situation to one of the tech guys, about how all i was
looking for was someone to actually fix any problem that should arise out of
the box. he then explained how they were weeks if not months behind and
that it wouldn't be likely that gateway would be any help to me either. i
then explained that he has mistaken me for those other bastards and that i
would gladly pay him a tribute to move to the front of the line. i was
assured his immediate personal attention, so i bought a gateway.

I imagine that apple stores are not quite like this, huh?

A Crown Vic Police Interceptor is not really a performance car. It's

is raised to around 130 mph, but there are much faster cars out there.
The differences between the civilian Crown Vic and the PI mostly improve
handling and allow it to sustain top speed without overheating and idle
for long periods without draining the battery.

I've noticed on a couple lists I'm on lately that tensions seem to be
running high in the last week or so.
I refer obviously to the headlight debacle that for once I'm going to
stay

completely out of except to say there are some pretty harsh posts there.

Someday I hope to learn how to only ever post stuff I wouldn't mind
somebody else saying to my mother... Someday.

Interesting. Over the holiday I drove my brother-in-law's new Cooper S, and
it is very fun. My brother drove it as well, and he is going to get one
too. No wonder demand keeps growing. I also just read that VW is not
including any diesels in their US 2007 line-up. They will be back in 2008.

Chris K
Cayce, SC

Read this in an article about the new mini (2007) -- the Cooper
(which is entry level even in Europe until they launch a new MINI One
and a new MINI Diesel some time next year)

The mini Diesel is what caught my eye! Wonder if it'll ever get to
this side of the pond?

My mother (70's) drives an '84 900. She loves it and wouldn't think of
letting us get her something newer, or an automatic. Hers is not as slow as
a 240D. The 'S' model was a 16-valve and a little quicker. For $200 I
don't think you can go wrong, unless, like you say, it is dangerous because
of rust rot. Otherwise a very safe car also.

I know we've got some Saab enthusiasts on this list so.
Theres an '85 Saab 900 on Craigslist near me. 114k miles, 5spd. Supposedly
needs a fuel pump relay to run.
They want $200, the pictures make it look like a very nice car which
considering its a New England car means its a rust bucket but I digress.
Back in highschool I had a friend who had a '79 Saab which she let me drive
once. I remember it being a very nice driving car.
We currently need a third car for a backup and since I'm having no luck
finding another Benz I'm opening the field a bit.

I've been told that old Saabs are a nightmare to keep up. Any opinions?

Thanks
