[MBZ] Compare 190D 2.2 auto 300TD
Has anyone here driven both a 190D 2.2 auto and a 1985 300TD? I currently drive the 1985 300TD and am considering a car I have never driven. Is the 190D 2.2 even slower than the wagon? There a 190D in Greensboro NC with 200,000 miles for around $2500. What are these cars worth? Re: [MBZ] Manual battery boost
I don't think you understand the basic assumption upon which his question is based. The unspoken assumption is that the initial effort to move the motor from where it has been sitting to any new position will break some kind of sealing that might have taken place as the engine cooled and the oil viscosity increased. The rotation is not to start the motor, only to relieve the starter and battery of the effort to make the initial movement. I don't know if the assumption is true or not, but it is interesting. I would bet, though, that the use of Mobil 1 would make the assumption false, as it wouldn't stiffen at lower temperatures. [MBZ] Noise from the rear
My 1985 300TD has a noise coming from the rear, which I had my indy 'fix' last year. It has the following traits: It is clearly in time with speed, and sounds like hammering. It is most pronounced on hard acceleration, goes almost away while coasting, and if I decelerate, it also is loud, but somewhat different. Finally, it seems too slow to be the wheel, and I am hoping someone will tell me it is obviously the flex disc, The indy said my right rear brake was sticking, and rebuilt the caliper. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger's side, but if it were the flex disk, is it possible that the muffler would shield that sound from the drivers side? Last year I took a very good hard look and detected nothing out of order, hence the indy. It started back shortly after I got it back, then went away for most of the summer/fall. Anyone have an idea? Or some tests I can do to narrow down the problem? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. Although she did technically 'discharge a firearm within the city limits', there was no mention of any charges against her. In fact, there wasn't even any grumbling from anyone about it. Have I got that right? I'm not sure about Japanese vs. German, but the Japanese were much quicker to pick up on statistical process control methods than Americans were. To put it very simply, if you imagine the specifications a product has to meet as two vertical lines on a graph, and the actual values of products coming off the line as a bell curve, American companies would focus on finding the finished items that were in the tails outside the specs and reworking them to make them good; while Japanese companies would focus on refining the process to narrow the curve so the tails were smaller and more of the finished product landed inside the specs to begin with. This is the basis of statistical process control...you measure and graph things so you know where your actual output is compared to the specs. Is the average too high or too low? Is there too much variation? This has to be applied to the whole manufacturing process, from gaskets and bolts on up. W. Edwards Deming was a big advocate of statistical process control. He had very limited success convincing American companies to change how they did business, but after WWII he traveled to Japan. That makes sense from a safety standpoint, and is part of the barrier to entry. Chris Kueny ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) 78 Chevy Custom deluxe '85 300TD '02 Subaru Outback You are also required to use an approved disconnect that uncouples your generator if the grid power fails. They are expensive. You cannot use a simple volt/amp measurement trigger, because you will be measuring your own generator's output and may not detect a power failure of the grid in a timely manner. -Dave Walton
Re: [MBZ] Octane and detonation....
If I were Kaleb, I would preface this with 'Bzzzt, wrong.' But I am not so I won't. The Lister engines available from India today use no spark. You open a valve to relieve compression, turn the heavy flywheel until you get some stored inertial energy, close the valve and open the fuel start injecting fuel. Keep turning the wheel until it starts. No gasoline, no spark. I hope to get one once I have a spare $1500, engine hoist, and coupla weeks for a new hobby. Paired with a gen head, and running on 50-50 diesel/recycled veggie oil, you could save a bit on electricity. If we had net billing here. See www.utterpower.comfor all the details. Chris K Cayce, SC Lister cylcle engines use compression ignition by atomizing diesel fuel into the air and igniting it by compression of the mixture AND a spark, not by injection, which is why they must be started on gasoline with a spark ignition. Low compression, to say the least.
