[MBZ] I'm slowly coming back ...

2022-03-14 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Dear all,

Thank you for your sympathies and condolences; they mean a lot and are
encouraging (he says as he type through tears).

I got email running on a borrowed laptop last night and this morning.
After roughly three months of neglect, I was greeted by the following
quantities of emails:

my personal email account 3611
Shirley and my joint account 1172
Shirley's personal account 984
freecycle 873
Okiebenz lists 6957

  13597

To say I am overwhelmed by this quantity of email is an understatement.
I have been unsubscribing from many manufacturers' and sellers' sites to
reduce the influx.

NOTE: I have even stopped delivery of Okiebenz list emails, so
if you want to contact me you will have to send an email
directly to me at diese...@pisquared.net.

For those who don't know, I was whisked off to be tested for covid along
with Shirley around the 18th of December by an elder of our church who
recently retired after 40 years as a surgeon (and who had already had
and recovered from WRD). I was admitted to Presbyterian Rust hospital in
Rio Rancho (northeast of Albuquerque) and was there for a day or so, I
think, when I was summarily discharged and returned to an empty home with
the statement I was well. Even the ambulance people were hesitant about
transporting me. When they dropped me off, the ambulance people said if I
had ANY problems to call 911. I called a few hours later and was taken to
the closest hospital (Kaseman in Albuquerque). After spending the day in
an ER room, I was admitted to and transported back to Rust hospital --
this time on a different floor and with a warning from our church deacon
who had Shirley and my Power of Attornies. I was there until 25 January.
In the interim, I was on up to 19 liters/min of oxygen, had a collapsed
left lung, and had a severe nose bleed. The nose bleed was so severe they
called a doctor from the ER across the hospital to come help stop it. At
one instant, as I was coughing up blood, I knew if my next breath was
air, the Lord had more things for me to do here and I would live; if my
next breath was blood, He was going to take me home. I was doing much
better after 21 January or so, so the covid safeguards and restrictions on
access to my room were lifted.

On 25 January, I was released to a rehab facility in Rio Rancho. While
there I had more nose bleeds, one of which was serious enough for them to
call 911 and have me transported to Rust's ER. That was stopped by an
older doctor who installed a "Rhino Rocket" in each nostril. Several days
later, I was transported to the office of an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT)
in the building next to Rust hospital. He specialized in nose bleeds and
had all the special tools to effectively treat my condition. Thankfully,
I have not had a nose bleed since.

While at the rehab facility, I had physical therapy and occupational
therapy to increase my strength for the various things I need to do. They
decided I had progressed enough they discharged me on 04 March. Instead
of going straight home to the 10,000 ft^2 former industrial building east
of Moriarty, I followed advice and opted to spend (at least) a month in
an assisted living facility in southeast Albuquerque, close to our (my)
church and an easy shot onto I-40 eastbound toward Moriarty avoiding all
of the city.

I hope to be in good enough shape to not have to pay another month's fee
for this (not cheap) assisted-living facility.

Shirley had a less-severe case of WRD than I did and was released to
rehab before I was. The rehab facility treated her Type 1 diabetes as
Type 2 and threw her into full-blown diabetic ketoacidosis. She was then
sent back to the hospital (a different one because the rehab facility was
in south Albuquerque). They got her straightened out and sent her to
another rehab facility. This rehab facility treated her Type 1 diabetes as
Type 2 and again threw her into full-blown diabetic ketoacidosis. She was
sent back to the second hospital where she stopped eating and drinking.
We thought a nasal feeding tube would help her. The elder of our church
went and examined and interviewed her and learned she wanted none of the
feeding tube, but instead wanted to go to hospice.

She was transferred to hospice in Edgewood, roughly mid-way between
Albuquerque and our place in Moriarty. There she started eating and
drinking again and things were looking up. The evening of 24 February,
however, she had a turn for the worse. Her primary nurse called the elder
and told him he and I needed to be there the following morning instead of
the afternoon we had planned. With that change we arrived in her room
10 - 20 minutes before she died.

My apologies for the length of this email; at least y'all now know most
of the story.

Fuses depend upon the square of the current multiplied by the time

There are charts for each type of fuse that show from the (I^2 t)
how long it should take to blow.

[MBZ] W124 300D rough running / tachometer

2021-07-13 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have experienced recently our '93 300D running roughly after I start
it. When this happens, the tachometer is not working. A varying amount
of time later, the engine starts running smoothly, always accompanied
by the tachometer working.

I have changed fuse #5: stop lamp, instrument, front roof light
electric bulb control unit, cruise control,
tachometer
but this has not helped.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks,

Craig

I posed the question to my local NWS administrator's email and got the
following response:

  Good morning Craig,

Unfortunately, most radar websites only display up to an
hour from the past. There's [sic] some archived images here
  (https://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/maps/ncei/radar) and through
RadarScope Pro. Websites like Tropical Tidbits show a

  several hours
  ( https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?

I went to the first link and found it helpful in looking at past rainfall
information. I saved a screenshot of the local area when rain was pouring
down Monday night and this display reproduces that quite accurately.

In my talking with the tech fellow at the factory (Wayne), I was told for
desulphating they recommend one battery per charger. Since our truck has
four batteries and I have other vehicles, too ...

This model of charger (12117TC) starts working at 6.5 V; if the battery
is lower than that, it won't start.

The model 1510 (which cannot be had at $19.95) starts working at 3.0 V,
or one could use a "dumb" charger to bring the battery up initially.

Wayne also said it takes 2 - 4 weeks to rejuvenate a battery.

[MBZ] Blood Tests

2021-04-01 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I had a recent comprehensive non-fastin blood test done recently.
Some of my results are:

Total Cholesterol 180
HDL Cholesterol54
LDL Cholesterol95
Triglycerides 224

The Physician's Assistant who I saw said my triglycerides were high
and was raised by things like sweets and bread, particularly white
bread.

I have looked on-line and found information about triglycerides being
raised by things like sausage, pepperoni, and bacon, but no mention
of bread.

What is youse guys experience?

How should I modify my diet?

Thanks,

I installed a thermostatic mixing valve in the feed line to our shower
to do the same and also minimize the water used to find the proper
temperature and flow. Only one knob of the shower valves is active, so
all one can do is turn it on and off.

Many people around here, where there is no water no matter how deep you
drill do exactly that. We are fortunate to have a well to supply our
hand-washing, toilet-flushing, and shower water; we buy 1 gallon jugs of
drinking water at our supermarket in Edgewood.

If you have both cars available (the engine donor and the 240D into which
the OM617 is going), the job is not too bad. I did it as I was finishing
grad school and when I was a postdoc looking for a permanent job. It
worked very well.

I did choose to use a naturally-aspirated OM617 so things would be
simpler, but AFAIK the transmission can handle the increased power
of a turbo-charged engine.

We sold our house in Los Alamos FSBO. The buyer and I walked into the
title company and they took it from there. It was quite a blessing and
much easier than having two real estate agents to be able to have him
call me and ask if he could park his car in the back of our 0.61 acre lot
a couple of weeks before closing and it was done when I said yes and our
asking to stay after closing until they moved in with him saying yes.
He commented after closing he really appreciated being able to talk
directly with me.

BTW, different areas of the country do things in exceedingly different
ways. From what Grant said, Arizona and New Mexico seem quite similar.
North Carolina, where I have been looking, is quite different and will
be a learning experience.

Quoting a Ph.D. physicist from my other list (Gordon Fulks on his Global
Warming Realists list) as he responded to one of my postings,

  Dear Craig,

Your cold is much more impressive than ours, with wind
chills forecast as low as -30 F. But we are both running
far below normal, thanks to bitterly cold arctic air.

Those who still 'believe in Global Warming' should realize
that events like this are unlikely to impossible in a world
  warmed by carbon dioxide.

They have suddenly become more likely thanks to cooler
La Nina sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific
near Peru and the accompanying dramatic drop in the global
temperature anomaly of the lower atmosphere.

Five years ago, we were enjoying an unusually warm February
global anomaly, thanks to the Super El Nino of 2016. But
sooner or later, a dramatic La Nina follows a Super El Nino.
It happened more quickly after the Super El Nino of 1998.

In Oregon, we are reaching lows not seen since 2014, namely
before the buildup to the El Nino of 2016. In some cases,
our lows are record daily lows.

Stay warm. We are both supposed to return to more normal
  temperatures in a few days.

  Gordon

There is crack out here in New Mexico, too:

1984 Mercedes 300TD Turbo Diesel Station Wagon for sale. This is a
3-owner car with 245,000 original miles (30+ years in Southern
California). The car has an extensive service history. Recent service
includes: automatic transmission rebuild, steering box rebuild, valve
timing, throttle adjustment, new valve cover gasket, belts, air cleaner
mounts, brake hoses, transaxle and CV boots, glow plugs, battery,
tires, alternator and mounting hardware, battery, suspension upper
control arms, steering shock, steering coupler, driveshaft mount and
bearing, and driveshaft coupler (flex disc). The car has a clean New
Mexico title, but Carfax shows that the vehicle was in an accident
during the first ownership. The body and undercarriage are free of
rust, and the interior shows little wear. The vehicle has been
repainted five years ago. There is water damage to the upholstery on
the inside of the liftgate, and there are some dents and a bead of seam
sealer on the roof as shown in the photos. Because of the car’s
accident history and roof damage, I am asking $10,880 which is 20% less
than the Hagerty valuation of $13,600 for a Mercedes 300TD in good
   condition.

[MBZ] Interesting tidbit

2021-02-12 Thread Craig via Mercedes
One of the pieces of literature I got from O'Reilly Auto Parts recently
is a brochure highlighting Dorman's "OE Fix" series of parts, which are
re-engineered to solve problems with factory parts.

In that brochure, I learned the differential covers for Toyota 4Runner,
FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, and Tundra vehicles are welded in place. The problem
with the factory parts is they are made of thin-gauge stamped steel,
which lets rust eat away faster than other areas.

Their fix was to make a replacement cover with thicker steel -- not what
I would consider a lifetime fix, but since there were no replacement
covers available before they introduced their part, I guess it's an
improvement.

I do, though, find it amazing any manufacturer would weld differential
covers in place!

[MBZ] Problems with our '93 300D

2021-02-07 Thread Craig via Mercedes
On the 35 mile trip to church this morning, we were driving at 75 mph when
suddenly the engine started running rough and a big cloud of white smoke
came out of the exahust (right into the front of the semi which was
tailgating us). After a couple of seconds the engine started running
normally and the smoke stopped. I checked the oil pressure (pegged) and
the temperature (85 C) and saw and heard everything was OK, so I kept on
driving.

Leaving church, we had a little problem backing up, which I attributed to
the rear wheel parking brakes acting up as they have done in the past.

We went to the nearby supermarket and everything seemed normal. I found
there was a long line to get into the building (yes, again!), so we left
and drove east. We got off the Interstate at Edgewood and stopped at the
supermarket there. Interestingly, there was no line at all and not even
someone watching the front door. I got some of the items we needed, went
back to the car, put them into the trunk, and proceeded to leave --
except the car would not move backward. It was OK going forward, however.

I left the engine idling and checked the transmission fluid level. It
seemed to be high, though I am not satisfied I'm getting the right level
indication when I check ATF levels. I did check the level a couple of
months ago and recall it was OK then.

After getting some help pushing the car out of the parking space (up a
slight incline) we were on our way toward the Interstate onramp. We
accelerated up the ramp and got on the roadway just as the engine ran
rough for a few seconds and then ran normally. I looked back and saw a
large cloud of a little white, but mostly black smoke.

The car ran fine the rest of the way home (15 miles), shifting through
all of the forward gears as it was supposed to. I was even able to get it
positioned so it would roll backwards down the incline from our front gate
to our building, so it's ready to go tomorrow -- we need to drive to our
dentist (56 miles) to have the recurrent infection in Shirley's jaw
looked at.

So, does anyone have any idea what's going on with the car?
Any idea if we will be OK driving to Albuquerque tomorrow?

Thank you for your help!

Which years were those?

Was that 300SD as well as 300SDL?

W115s, W123s and W124s have nimble handling, while a 300SDL is more
ponderous with an old Detroit feeling. Is a 300SD like the former or

Well, no, I don't remember that, sorry.

As it was sitting in our Big Room for a protracted time, I did a lot of
maintenance on it besides trying to track down the phantom current drain
and secure the cooling system. Part of the maintenance was a new Mann
filter and ATF.

I'd guess it has about 250 miles on the new ATF and filter.

COVID-19 on U.S. deaths using data from the Centers for Disease

It is not possible to "contain" nor eradicate a virus. The flu shot for
this season has the 2009 H1N1 strain in it, so, although it is not a
pandemic like it was in 2009, it is still with us. I had heard the 1918
Spanish flu strain and the 198x bird flu strain were in it, but I cannot
find confirmation of that.

Even after telling them multiple times, you would (not?) believe the howl

I ran Win7 on our "new" Ryzen 3 system on a BioStar motherboard and found
everything worked except the USB connectors. I contacted the factory and
was told they had a program which would add the correct drivers to an
Win7 install on a pen drive. I tried that and went around and around with
them (I'm sure the language difference did not help) with my saying it
did not work and their saying it did. Perhaps a different motherboard
company (ASUS? ASRock?) would be different.

I finally gave up and installed CentOS 7 (with Gnome3) and got working
USB ports, but a lot of other things I do not like about Gnome3.

And I suppose I should address the inevitable comments about the
sacrilege committed to this car. I know. In my defense, I have
restored a number of these cars back to factory and frown on and
modifications. However, This one came to me with a blown motor, and
although I did have a spare turbo motor for this, I really wanted
something that no one else had. Yes, it got way out of hand and yes
many of the mods are gratuitous. I had seen a few other cars that had
a small block Chevy transplant and in my opinion none of them had been
done right. I love these cars, like many others do, but let’s face it,
they need to make one with some power.
