Re: [MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The run flat problem is a lead acid battery problem, not a lithium battery
issue. The BMS is supposed to prevent the battery getting discharged to
damaging levels.
For off grid solar lithium is a game changer, they're physically smaller, don't
off gas, and can be deep discharged without damage. For me the issue is that
they won't charge well when cold so I'd need to find a place for them inside
the heated envelope of the camp. I think I've got it figured out and our next
batteries will probably be lithium.

As I understand it, they don't "expire" they start losing capacity (which
reduces range) and eventually they will no longer provide a useful range to the
owner of the vehicle.

It also depends how they are used. If they are run to near-flat and then fully
recharged, that's harder on the battery life than running them down to say 40%
and charging back up to say 80% charge (assuming that meets your range
requirements).

Re: [MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
5 years? These are lithium batteries, service life should be 8 at least, more
with a little care.
Cost per mile on EVs is very competitive with gas cars on fuel alone. Some
months ago I did the math and a Tesla was something like half my diesel Jetta
and that was me using pretty pessimistic numbers for the Tesla. Once you add in
the lack of maintenance on an EV it looks better still. I haven't worked it far
enough to see if it'll cover battery replacement though.

Somewhere along the way, you would need to factor in the expected service
life of the EV, the solar system, storage batteries, and other equipment
required, like the expected $20,000 + to replace the EV's battery packs in
5 years.

Re: [MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
New England is serviced by only one natural gas pipeline. Our energy prices can
skyrocket during high demand due to limited supply.
My opinion is that electricity prices aren't going down and anywhere that net
metering is allowed it makes sense to get solar.
Panel prices continue to fall, 5 years ago when we first put panels on the camp
I was happy with 100w panels for $100. Now I can get open box 260w for $160.
I'm debating switching us to 24v and getting 3x 260w panels which will more
than triple our generating capacity.

I know the 124 diesel with the 2.5 (602?) is great.  And the 603 is very good
too. (Right?)

The 606 in the 124 and 210 is also good?

Then, the CDI started and the Black Death is a big concern and the blue tec is
next.  Someone mentioned the other day that bluetec has its own issues — most
notably it is not good for relatively short drives like a 10 minute commute.
It really needs to be driven for a while to get everything heated up and
working.

My cars now get driven to work only 6-8 miles one way. Half of that is on the
highway - obviously not for long.  Then relatively short trips on the weekend.
occasionally we drive long distances over a weekend 600 miles or so maybe every
few months.

So, if I want a fuel efficient MB diesel that doesn’t have to be driven 30

What was the six cylinder non-turbo that was in the 124 and 210? I remember

6-8 mile commutes are where an EV excels. Electric heat means the cabin is warm
quickly and you don't need to worry about range.

It's not great for any car, gas or diesel, to not get fully warmed up. You
really want to get the engine oil and exhaust fully warm to drive out moisture.
That said, a 6-8 miles drive twice daily is probably OK especially if some of
it is at highway speeds and you're doing occasional longer drives. You might be
better off with a gasser though, or (heaven forbid) even an EV for a commute
that short.

The 5.7 V8 is 390. Most of the ones I'm seeing now are v6. I don't know what

I suspect this summer we'll see a decline in travel and an increase in sedan

With something that the buyer has the power to set the price, like
housing, corporate stocks, and tulip bulbs, the price will peak when
everybody in the market believes it can only keep rising in price.
Confidence and Fear Of Missing Out will be at maximum levels, until an
outside force crashes the price.

The reverse works at the bottom. When nobody wants to buy today because
they know it'll be cheaper tomorrow, that's when the price can't go any
lower.

They make a trap doodad to vent your dryer inside. The dryer vent shoots
straight down into a little trough of water. The lint can't make the turn and
ends up in the water. Need to refill the water pretty regularly. We use one in
the winter, the dryer is in the basement with the wood stove so the humidity is
good in the winter.
The yearly switch over is a good time to inspect the dryer pipe to the outside.

_So_ different than eastern WA.  Swamp coolers are highly
effective here, it's generally quite dry.  Dry enough that I've
considered having our clothes dryer vent into the basement
in order to conserve the heat and moisture!  (Would need a
lint trap, though.  Big bag made of sheets?)  When I do laundry
I just hang it on a line inside the house, in winter.  Dries fine,
though denim is stiff (which I like).  My wife hates that, and
always uses the dryer.

I gave up on the whole-house humidifier, I just couldn't keep
that thing running.  (An in-duct boiler, with tank and float valve.)

The boat is just the beginning. Once you have the boat, you either need
a boathouse to keep it in or a storage building at home to keep it in on
the trailer. Storing it on the trailer is likely not recommended for a
wooden boat as they need to soak up a bit of water or they will leak.
You also need a tow vehicle and the name of a boat builder/restorer to
call upon whenever it appears to need TLC.

There was a fairly decent boat for sale of a similar vintage out at our
lake last summer. It was a Lyman so the hull was painted white but it
had the mahogany front deck and side trim, dog house, etc. I could have
had it for around $10K but I do not have a boat house to keep it in or I
might have been tempted.

Interestingly enough, it had lived its whole life in our bay within
sight of our dock. It belonged originally to  some folks who had a big
triple stall boathouse with living quarters above. Those are not allowed
these days but grandfathered ones still exist. The boat along with the
property was inherited by their son. Unfortunately, he died a couple of
years ago at about age 80. The boat was acquired by some folks in town
who used it a bit but are now seeking to sell it. They aren't getting
any younger either. They would be in their early to mid 70's.

The boathouse was falling into disrepair and was torn down too. A sad
state of affairs.

I need to learn a little about tinting for our gym. Its in a converted space in

[MBZ] OT: My turn to complain about USPS

2022-05-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie sent a box to her aunt in RI the other day. Today it showed up back at
our house.

I took it down to the post office, the girl there remembered it but was baffled
as to why it came back. She eventually decided that some PO sticker had torn
off the box and so it came back. The payment sticker was still on the box, the
TO and FROM were still on the box, the tracking was still on the box, just some
other sticker wasn't...

She assured me it would go out again tonight. I have doubts...

Re: [MBZ] Diesel prices going back up

The auto box or the larger size of the Passat is seriously hurting mileage.
Last week to PA and back my Jetta consistently turned in 51+mpg. We took it
fairly easy on the way down but I flogged it on the way back. IIRC on the way
down we did 51.7 on the way back it was more like 51.2. Traffic was pretty
heavy both ways.

This summer I'd like to run it up north and see what 2 hours (Bangor to
Houlton, Maine) at 65mph would give.

A gasoline Jetta with the 1.4 engine gets ~34mpg mixed, probably better on the
highway. So here, with unleaded at $3.99, that's 11.7 cents/mile. The diesel at

savings driving a diesel any more. The higher energy content of the diesel fuel
has been factored into the price.

I don't think any marque is offering diesel passenger cars in the USA any more.
We can probably thank VW for that. GM killed the passenger diesel engine in the
late 1970s/early 1980s, and VW killed whatever recovery there had been with
their emissions cheats.

I still like my OM617s for their simplicity and reliability but would never buy
a new diesel with all the blue tech crap. They cost more, won't save any money
on fuel and are more prone to problems.

The only sensible reason to buy a new diesel today is in a truck where you need
the torque for towing or hauling heavy loads.

Sell the tractor you have and keep this one or take the tiller and creeper gear
off this one and sell the tractor. Figure the creeper is $200-$250 by itself,
same for the tiller, resell the tractor for $600 and you're up $100...

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You could add it to a partially filled tank. I've found that a relatively small
amount of veggie oil makes a huge difference in the sound of a diesel engine. I
haven't tried in my TDI but in a 240D a quart of veggie oil in a full (or
nearly full) tank of diesel would substantially quiet the engine and give that
veggie oil smell.

but I'd just driven through NYC and was a little tired.

Google says the car has a 14.5 gallon tank and the car was reporting 30 miles
of range left when we finally refueled. Going through NYC with the low fuel

Of course, it had a 20-gallon auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk!  MPG was 23.5

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Not approved and restricted are not the same thing. In 2003 we'd be talking
about an ALH or AHU engine like my '89 Jetta. Those do just fine on bio diesel,
I ran quite a bit through my '98. If it weren't for the tin-worm I'd still be
driving that car, it's my favorite.

The next generation PD engines have "mixed" results apparently but up B80 seems
fine. This is the generation where pressures start to get serious. Angie's '05
Golf has the PD engine.

Then you get into the common rail engines, the issue here is the post injection
for emissions. Typical emissions getting in the way. I will say that my '15
Jetta makes no diesel smoke or smell ever. Angie's '05 generally makes a puff
of smoke when it first starts, that puff goes away quickly and there is no
smoke or smell after that.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Coleman fuel alternative?

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Will work fine in a KEROSENE Coleman lantern. It'll burn in a regular lantern
you just need some preheat, I actually did a video on that recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjE1pCY_VjU

NOT for use in wick lanterns, it's got lower vapor pressure so as the tank
warms up it can off-gas causing the lantern to run away.

Re: [MBZ] Colemans

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Depends on the lantern, Coleman did make kerosene specific lanterns. You need
to preheat to get kerosene to light, fortunately we know a guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_CJZrpGCAQ

There is big debate about RUG (regular unleaded gas) in a Coleman lantern.
Nobody disputes that it will work, Coleman makes dual fuel lanterns
specifically for this. There are 2 prime points of contention:
1. RUG will clog the lantern generator (vaporizer) faster
This is true but probably not important "faster" is still a pretty long time
horizon
2. RUG has nasty additives you probably don't want to be breathing.
So don't use it indoors

I'd add one other point, RUG has a substantially higher water content than
canned fuel, you probably shouldn't leave it in the tank long term as it will
cause/promote rust. This is especially important for lanterns made after WWII
but before the 1970s. Some time in the mid '70s Coleman started coating the
inside of the steel tanks to resist rust better. Lanterns made before WWII are
mostly brass...

Re: [MBZ] Brake dust woes

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Akebono are the best. Ceramic pads are harder than conventional pads but
somehow magically have more friction so you use less pressure overall and,
counterintuitively rotors should last longer.

upgrade?

I am going kicking and screaming into this new world where cars

I remember working the student radio station one night in college. I was bored
and started to read through the National Emergency Broadcast System folder of
stuff we might have to do in case of emergency. There were all sorts of
emergencies spelled out in painstaking detail but the one that really caught me
was the nuclear war stuff. We were to read out things like "Stay off the phone,
keep the phone lines available for emergency use". Very 1950s kind of stuff,
kind of chilling in a "Morning After" kind of way.

it branches off near the brake booster, and plugged it. Engine shut-off works

Backing out of the driveway, heard a loud scraping sound. The exhaust had

I had one spare rubber donut on the shelf, so with that and some zip-ties I got

so I decided to go to NAPA which is a lot closer than Autozone but they don't

They also had two rubber donuts which I bought, I'll order some more from FCP

Economy (and Power King, same thing, a little bigger) tractors are rad. Bigger
than a normal lawn tractor they're much more capable.

That seems like a pretty good set although I don't see a plow there.
Plow/harrow combo is a lot more work to break ground than a rototiller. Faster
for a large area, not that great for a normal garden...

That seems like a pretty fair price.

Anyhow, it runs fine. Got it home, shut down, tried to start it about 10

try to check voltages tonight but my hunch is it's not the battery but the
starter or solenoid.

I had a quick look under the car, starter looks easy enough to get at, two big
bolts holding it to the bellhousing. I was going to hit it with PB Blaster but
it's already quite oily and there is a good bit of oil everywhere on the lower

The ultimate beauty of old tractors is that there isn't much to them. One of
the guys in the snowmobile club mows trails for us with an 8n and a 3pt bush

Quite a bit smaller than my Farmall Super M but would use a lot less fuel too.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Score! FB Marketplace

2022-04-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Stabil sucks. It'll go bad after a couple years and clot right in its own
bottle. Marine Stabil is better but still clots after a couple years.

Put 1oz Seafoam gas additive in every gallon of gas you buy. Put it in the can
before you go to the gas station. I use a Ratio Rite measuring cup:
https://tinyurl.com/ycme483z to make sure I'm measuring accurately.

At the end of the season put another 1oz in the tank and run the engine for 5
minutes before storage. I have had zero problems with ethanol fuel in the last
10 years.

Just about every snowblower surges at the beginning of the season... Run it
hard with fresh gas and let it idle for a minute or two after you're done to
let it cool down and it'll smooth out.

I had one like that recently "I'll come out Saturday" to which he replied
"Okay".
Friday night I ask for directions "Oh it's sold". I could have come out earlier
if he'd told me other people had interest...

And, unfortunately, you often have to be able to go get it right now. I
saw something on Marketplace a week or so back on a Wednesday at
breakfast time and contacted the vendor and said I would take it. We
messaged back and forth a little. He is out of town and I asked if he
came in to the city often so that I could meet him somewhere closer. He
said not really, so I agreed to go get it. I told him I couldn't come
immediately and he said I could come in the evening but that Thursday
would be better than that evening or else on Saturday. I said I would
come out on Thursday evening. I got his phone number so that I could
call for directions to his place before I came. Later that day, I got a
message saying he sold it to someone else. It was only a $50 item so I
don't know why he couldn't wait until the next day.

Similar to what you've already got, I think that's a K series Kohler engine,
the difference being that it's belt drive instead of the shaft drive on a Cub
Cadet.

Take a squirt bottle of 2 stroke gas and a boost pack, shoot a little juice
into the carb, if it fires it's worth that price.

I had a K181 rebuilt last year, the fellow charged me $625 which I thought was
a decent deal. It had gotten pretty tired, was hard to start and blew a lot of
smoke. Runs great now, starts easy and has great power.

I have long been of the opinion that modifications like that should not
be allowed. Even from the factory, I suggest that all vehicles on the
road should have their bumpers at the same height and that all lights
should be at a uniform height. Sports cars and semi truck tractors
should all be required to conform. If you want to lift your pickup truck
for off-roading, then you wouldn't be permitted to drive it on the road.

I've never seen them sell more than pellet guns/ammo. Gun safes though.

I'm personally not a TSC fan, it's one of those places that almost never has
what I want. If they normally carry the item it'll inevitably be out of stock
when I'm there.

Their off brand tools are JUNK, I've regretted every one I've ever bought.

About the only thing I regularly get there is oil and there stocks have been

I forgot he had a summer job driving rail spikes when he was a kid; his
grampa Carl homesteaded on a piece of railroad checkerboard, so the tracks
cross the section road just off the end of the driveway at the end of the
pasture of the home farm. Anyway he used some crazy technique where he
raised his arms and the axe straight up in front of him way over his head
like a lightning rod, then brought it down bending fully over at the waist
with a straight line from his belly button out to the head of the axe and
the axe head trailing enough behind to get some whip action on it. Sagged
down at the knees a bit at the same time. The log just exploded in all
directions. For that split second it was like watching one of those Thor

Good point.

I don't think that's the issue here, it will run wide open if I give it a

[MBZ] OT: 2022 as a year for finishing up old projects

2022-03-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's got old projects hanging around uncompleted.

I don't even remember how long ago I brought dad's Echo chainsaw back from
camp. Before 2016 anyway for sure. I don't remember if I ran some bad gas in it
or it had just sat but either way I brought it home and pulled the carb. I'd
bought a carb kit and then got distracted. The other day I very nearly took it
to the dump but decided to take one last look at it.

Surprisingly I found at least most of the parts, well I've got a whole bunch of
screws and a spring I can't account for in the cup with the other parts from
the saw, not sure if I mixed two projects or what. Anyway the other night after
dinner I got it mostly back together, I even took some time to clean things,
there was a lot of accumulated dirt and sawdust.

Today I took it out and fired it up. It runs but I need to find a small enough
screwdriver to adjust the carb, yes it's old enough that the carb adjustments
are easily accessible. It'll run at idle but quits as soon as you gas it.
Shouldn't be that hard to adjust out.

It'd be handy to have another good saw and that one has always run well...

Re: [MBZ] Battery Fun

2022-03-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Pretty common in heavy equipment too. Helps to keep kids from taking equipment
for a joyride. We have shutoffs on all the grooming equipment.
I put one on my Farmall Super M last year, much easier than disconnecting the
battery manually. I think I'll put one on the Ford this year, it doesn't drain
the battery particularly but again, lessen the chance of it getting ridden
around without permission.

Somebody who really wanted to steal it still could but this is mostly for the
kids...

Mine has some kind of a rubber handle, I don't love it, it slides around a

The faster the maul goes the more force but it's easy to go overboard and lose

Re: [MBZ] More tires

They're not even Chinese, they're made in South Korea.

While I prefer made in USA stuff I'm really only anti-made in China.

I bought Khumho tires for the 85 300D and loved them. No issues back and forth

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dexter watch offer

2022-03-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
$75 is going to buy you a plastic monstrosity made in China. Why would anyone
who is into fine time pieces want a plastic monstrosity?

I quit wearing a watch full time when my last Timex died and I had a cell
phone. A few years ago Angie bought me a Bulova Marine Star which is really the
only jewelry I wear other than my wedding ring. I don't wear it a lot because
I'd go wrench on a car and forget its there and damage it but it's nice for
occasional use.

Frankly I don't understand the allure of the smart watch. I'm trying to get
less contact with my phone, not strap the dang thing to my wrist...

OK.  If anyone wants to recommend a different high tech watch in that price
range ($75 max) I'd be interested, offline if you prefer.
