That would not be possible in my 300SD, and very unlikely in my 190D.
And 200m of elevation drop over a 1200km trip is not cheating,
especially when it's probably upwind.
The battery is 5x the capacity of the 400lb battery found in a Chevy
Spark, so one has to wonder about the cost and weight.
But over 7 miles per kWh is stellar at any reasonable speed, and doubly
impressive when you're carrying a ton of batteries.
Is 0.17 Cd possible in a production sedan? That's almost 10% cleaner
than the C111-III.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Scottsdale real estate

2022-06-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Just for giggles I looked at the listings around our vast northern estate.
https://www.redfin.com/ME/Caribou/522-Grimes-Mill-Rd-04736/home/97646019

Our place is 554, a couple houses south.
Slide down to the bottom of the listing and notice that it sold in 2020 for
$39k. I'd debated buying it then as it was livable and connected to our land.

The pictures look nice inside but it's a dumpy little house on the edge of a
hayfield. I think they're reaching at $165,000 and I see they've already
started dropping.

No bubble, simple supply and demand economics.

Even in a hot market like Flagstaff where there are tons of investor owned
properties, things are starting to slow a bit. It’s partly due to the increase
in interest rates taking potential buyers on the fringes out coupled with the
peak time for the market.

There are 24 active listings in my neighborhood right now, a huge number
compared to last year, ranging from $500k to $2.5M. Seven of those listings
have cut prices in the last 2-3 weeks. Oldest DOM is 63 days. Last year at this
time they would have been long gone and under contract.

Zillow stopped buying homes some months ago, long before the market started to
slow. Their business model is unsustainable, and they were starting to
(finally) figure that out.

My neighborhood in Florida saw about a one and a half times increase in home
values. Up until recently, homes were selling in the mid-$400k range without
buyers blinking an eye. We had one top of the line property that someone really
tarted up that recently went under contract around $700k!

What’s really funny about this is that a property just listed a day or two ago
for $729k. No doubt someone trying to catch the peak before it’s gone, probably
driven by the recent $700k listing that hasn’t closed so we don’t really know
the selling price - yet. I doubt very much they’ll get their ask - they’re now
on the back side of the peak, in my opinion, and will likely take a beating on
the asking price.

I’ve already got my popcorn out to watch the show. If they get it, it’s good
for all of us. I really doubt they will.

I assumed this was in Mammoth or one of the places where trucking in gas is
very difficult.

Back in 2016 dad and I were moose hunting in Grand Lake Stream, Maine:
https://goo.gl/maps/ZajrbzssB8jMGcbW7
IIRC gas was $5/gal where it was something like $2/gal out at the highway. It
was then that I realized the gas was trucked in in 55 gallon drums. The extra
price was the shipping.
Thats what you get in a town of 230 people at the end of a dead end road.

Good moose hunting though.

Re: [MBZ] Oh, thank heaven.

2022-06-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The issue isn't the price of crude it's refinery capacity:
https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=52718

Exports of refined products are up, probably to support Europe:
https://www.freightwaves.com/news/us-exports-even-more-oil-as-domestic-gasoline-diesel-prices-spike

If the government really wanted to do something about the price of gas/diesel
they'd help to get new refinery capacity built...

I had an '85 190D 2.2l 5spd I drove just over 100,000 miles. Best I ever got

I also had an '84 190D 2.2l auto, the best I ever got in that was 38mpg,
average was more like 32.

We went to NH last weekend for Angie's birthday, the '15 Jetta TDI did 56mpg

Seriously though I am starting to see more availability. I'd like to replace my

that isn't absurd. 6 months ago the best I could find was a 6 year old truck
for $32k. I could have had brand new for $28k back in 2014 when I bought my
current truck.

all the electric into the kitchen so I can get the whole north wall of the
house and the east wall of the kitchen foamed. That's probably a stretch goal,
I did about 20% of the demolition for it in May. If I can finish the demo

Re: [MBZ] OT: Long overdue tractor maintenance

2022-06-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I have the original documentation and 13 gallons is what it calls for. They say
90wt in summer and 80w in winter. I figure 80w90 will be a lot better than what
was in there.

I did try to drain it once back in the 90s. Glad I didn't because I'd had no
idea what I was getting into. Back then I remember a big plug of grease oozing
out, I put the plug back in quick.

When I go back in July I'm also going to replace the oil pan gasket, it's
dripping a bit. I don't mind it leaking oil but for an inexpensive gasket I'll
do what I can to slow it down. I've already done the valve cover and inspection
cover gaskets.

I should probably do the hydraulic oil while I'm at it, I've never used the
hydraulics but I did haul the snow plow out of the bushes, someday that might
get used...

[MBZ] OT: Long overdue tractor maintenance

On our last trip to camp I decided it was finally time to change the
transmission oil in the 1952 Farmall Super M. What came out doesn't bear
description, fortunately there's a video:
https://curtsotherblog.blogspot.com/2022/06/tractor-maintenance.html

Dad thinks this "oil" (sludge) has been in the machine since the mid-'60s when
my great uncles quit farming. Interestingly it doesn't smell of gear oil at all.

Does anybody need 11 gallons of tar?

Stealing gas is about the lowest kind of theft.

We've only had one minor car theft in the 16 years we've lived here, somebody
stole the change out of my '85 190D (MB content). It's interesting when you
consider that the people across the street from me are total scumbags.
Apparently the know enough not to try that around here.

The barn on the vast northern estate has many forms of entry, the 2 garage door
openings on the end are covered with a kind of industrial belting, it's
basically thick cloth nailed to the wall with a 2x6 across the bottom. I left
my Super M in there last winter along with a lawnmower and power washer and a 2
gallon can of gas. All of it was undisturbed this spring. We have excellent
neighbors up there, always looking out for us.

Not lately.
They got my dad's S-10 during Desert Storm.
Pissed him off, they not only siphoned it, they stole or threw away his
gas cap.
He replaced it, and the cap on mom's Ciera, with a locking cap.

Also during the Desert Storm pricing, saw a drive off theft at a Checker
station.
Asshat parked an old beater truck at the farthest pump and filled it
with Premium.
When the clerk saw him park there she was on high alert.
When he started pumping premium she wrote down his plate number.
Called the cops as he was driving off.

By the turn of the century, everybody had gone to prepay only.
Now nobody drives off without paying because nobody pumps without

paying.

[MBZ] OT: VW repairs

2022-06-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I also got to do some mechanicing this weekend. Somewhere during our trip to PA
a couple weeks ago my 2015 Jetta TDI developed a metallic rattle.
Listening to it the other day I decided the brake backing plate on the
passenger rear wheel must have gotten loose. Turns out I was right.
It's a lousy design, the plate is aluminum, it's attached directly with 1 bolt
and then 4 other bolts have wavy washers. It appears there is some tension in
the plate which keeps it against the wavy washers. The metal around the 1
mounting bolt broke off, I think aluminum work hardens and it stress fractured.

You can't take the plate off without taking the hub off which was more than I
wanted to get into it. So I punched out some donuts of 1/8" viton rubber sheet
I had hanging around (failed lantern project) it's pretty hard rubber so I made
a donut to go behind the plate and another to go under the wavy washer and
sandwich the plate. After a bunch of farting around it's all in there and there
is no rattle at all...

The panels have gotten a LOT cheaper too. About 10 years ago I was thinking of
solar hot water instead of PV, the payoff was a lot sooner. These days you can
overbuild PV and use an electric hot water heater as a dump load, so when
you're making more power than you need you just dump it into making hot water
and get the same payoff as doing solar hot water.

local laws also. They have net zero metering ones that never put power into
the grid beyond what you use, if you live in one of those communist states

Fire is the main reason a lot of policies are getting cancelled in the SW.
We went with stucco and a metal roof but should have boxed in the eaves
also with stucco, as that is where the roofs often catch fire. Plus be sure
your roof vents and hvac air intakes all have 1/8" metal screens, rather
than 1/4", which lets too many embers in. 11 houses burned across the
street in the next block up during the Getty fire.

I bet if you build a dune buggy using those subframes and suspension

Besides that, I don't think you want front engine, rear wheel drive for

Check out the DF Goblin or Ariel Atom for ideas.

We have a Multi-Pure https://www.multipure.com/products/drinking-water-systems/
Just a single stage, I think multi-stage would be most useful if you had
turbidity which we don't. I change the filter every year and a half to 2 years
when the water flow slows down enough to be annoying.

It was expensive but the filter container and mount is stainless as is the
spout on the sink, I don't think it'll never need replacing. I use discount CB6
filters I find online, they all seem to be about the same.

This would eliminate the pitchers sitting on the counter and seems more

Anyone using one you are happy with? Single stage? Double? Triple?

Re: [MBZ] MB diesel education and advice

2022-05-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The run flat problem is a lead acid battery problem, not a lithium battery
issue. The BMS is supposed to prevent the battery getting discharged to
damaging levels.
For off grid solar lithium is a game changer, they're physically smaller, don't
off gas, and can be deep discharged without damage. For me the issue is that
they won't charge well when cold so I'd need to find a place for them inside
the heated envelope of the camp. I think I've got it figured out and our next
batteries will probably be lithium.

As I understand it, they don't "expire" they start losing capacity (which
reduces range) and eventually they will no longer provide a useful range to the
owner of the vehicle.

It also depends how they are used. If they are run to near-flat and then fully
recharged, that's harder on the battery life than running them down to say 40%
and charging back up to say 80% charge (assuming that meets your range
requirements).

5 years? These are lithium batteries, service life should be 8 at least, more
with a little care.
Cost per mile on EVs is very competitive with gas cars on fuel alone. Some
months ago I did the math and a Tesla was something like half my diesel Jetta
and that was me using pretty pessimistic numbers for the Tesla. Once you add in
the lack of maintenance on an EV it looks better still. I haven't worked it far
enough to see if it'll cover battery replacement though.

Somewhere along the way, you would need to factor in the expected service
life of the EV, the solar system, storage batteries, and other equipment
required, like the expected $20,000 + to replace the EV's battery packs in
5 years.

New England is serviced by only one natural gas pipeline. Our energy prices can
skyrocket during high demand due to limited supply.
My opinion is that electricity prices aren't going down and anywhere that net
metering is allowed it makes sense to get solar.
Panel prices continue to fall, 5 years ago when we first put panels on the camp
I was happy with 100w panels for $100. Now I can get open box 260w for $160.
I'm debating switching us to 24v and getting 3x 260w panels which will more
than triple our generating capacity.

Of course you would need storage batteries in your garage to collect and store
the electrons from solar photons so you can charge your car at night. The whole
process should be on the order of maybe 8% efficient if you’re lucky.

It sounds like you'd be better served with a gas car. With the cost of diesel

If I was looking for a Mercedes diesel that would get 30+ mpg and is pretty

I know the 124 diesel with the 2.5 (602?) is great.  And the 603 is very good
too. (Right?)

The 606 in the 124 and 210 is also good?

Then, the CDI started and the Black Death is a big concern and the blue tec is
next.  Someone mentioned the other day that bluetec has its own issues — most
notably it is not good for relatively short drives like a 10 minute commute.
It really needs to be driven for a while to get everything heated up and
working.

My cars now get driven to work only 6-8 miles one way. Half of that is on the
highway - obviously not for long.  Then relatively short trips on the weekend.
occasionally we drive long distances over a weekend 600 miles or so maybe every
few months.

So, if I want a fuel efficient MB diesel that doesn’t have to be driven 30
minutes at a time, should I be focused on 124 and 210 with the 602, 603, and
606?

What was the six cylinder non-turbo that was in the 124 and 210? I remember

With something that the buyer has the power to set the price, like
housing, corporate stocks, and tulip bulbs, the price will peak when
everybody in the market believes it can only keep rising in price.
Confidence and Fear Of Missing Out will be at maximum levels, until an
outside force crashes the price.

The reverse works at the bottom. When nobody wants to buy today because
they know it'll be cheaper tomorrow, that's when the price can't go any
lower.

They make a trap doodad to vent your dryer inside. The dryer vent shoots
straight down into a little trough of water. The lint can't make the turn and
ends up in the water. Need to refill the water pretty regularly. We use one in
the winter, the dryer is in the basement with the wood stove so the humidity is
good in the winter.
The yearly switch over is a good time to inspect the dryer pipe to the outside.

_So_ different than eastern WA.  Swamp coolers are highly
effective here, it's generally quite dry.  Dry enough that I've
considered having our clothes dryer vent into the basement
in order to conserve the heat and moisture!  (Would need a
lint trap, though.  Big bag made of sheets?)  When I do laundry
I just hang it on a line inside the house, in winter.  Dries fine,
though denim is stiff (which I like).  My wife hates that, and
always uses the dryer.

I gave up on the whole-house humidifier, I just couldn't keep
that thing running.  (An in-duct boiler, with tank and float valve.)

What happens to a wooden boat over the winter? I presume it has to come out of
the water, does it just leak for awhile in the spring when you put it back in
the water?

The boat is just the beginning. Once you have the boat, you either need
a boathouse to keep it in or a storage building at home to keep it in on
the trailer. Storing it on the trailer is likely not recommended for a
wooden boat as they need to soak up a bit of water or they will leak.
You also need a tow vehicle and the name of a boat builder/restorer to
call upon whenever it appears to need TLC.

There was a fairly decent boat for sale of a similar vintage out at our
lake last summer. It was a Lyman so the hull was painted white but it
had the mahogany front deck and side trim, dog house, etc. I could have
had it for around $10K but I do not have a boat house to keep it in or I
might have been tempted.

Interestingly enough, it had lived its whole life in our bay within
sight of our dock. It belonged originally to  some folks who had a big
triple stall boathouse with living quarters above. Those are not allowed
these days but grandfathered ones still exist. The boat along with the
property was inherited by their son. Unfortunately, he died a couple of
years ago at about age 80. The boat was acquired by some folks in town
who used it a bit but are now seeking to sell it. They aren't getting
any younger either. They would be in their early to mid 70's.

The boathouse was falling into disrepair and was torn down too. A sad
state of affairs.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on window tint

2022-05-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I need to learn a little about tinting for our gym. Its in a converted space in
what was an old bank. I don't know how old the building is, I'd guess late
1800s or early 1900s. I suspect there isn't much insulation and it's tough to
keep it cool in the summer. Shades over the windows helped but I bet a moderate
tint would help too.

The 3M crystal stuff is expensive and tint guy said the other brands may be
better for less money.

I have dark tint in the 123 wagon, darker in Rear than front. All modern
SUVs run it. Looks fine. Need to do the windshield.

Rear window on a 126 takes an experienced hand to shrink the film in
corners due to compound curve. And be sure not to break the 3rd brake
light. The whole thing just tilts up and out- dont mess with the cover.

Dropped a bluetooth kenwood and some speakers in also with subwoofers in
doors. Sacrelige but totally functional.

[MBZ] OT: My turn to complain about USPS

2022-05-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie sent a box to her aunt in RI the other day. Today it showed up back at
our house.

I took it down to the post office, the girl there remembered it but was baffled
as to why it came back. She eventually decided that some PO sticker had torn
off the box and so it came back. The payment sticker was still on the box, the
TO and FROM were still on the box, the tracking was still on the box, just some
other sticker wasn't...

She assured me it would go out again tonight. I have doubts...

Re: [MBZ] Diesel prices going back up

2022-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The auto box or the larger size of the Passat is seriously hurting mileage.
Last week to PA and back my Jetta consistently turned in 51+mpg. We took it
fairly easy on the way down but I flogged it on the way back. IIRC on the way
down we did 51.7 on the way back it was more like 51.2. Traffic was pretty
heavy both ways.

This summer I'd like to run it up north and see what 2 hours (Bangor to
Houlton, Maine) at 65mph would give.

A gasoline Jetta with the 1.4 engine gets ~34mpg mixed, probably better on the
highway. So here, with unleaded at $3.99, that's 11.7 cents/mile. The diesel at
42mpg with fuel at $5.19 would be 12.3 cents/mile. So there's no fuel cost
savings driving a diesel any more. The higher energy content of the diesel fuel
has been factored into the price.

I don't think any marque is offering diesel passenger cars in the USA any more.
We can probably thank VW for that. GM killed the passenger diesel engine in the
late 1970s/early 1980s, and VW killed whatever recovery there had been with
their emissions cheats.

I still like my OM617s for their simplicity and reliability but would never buy
a new diesel with all the blue tech crap. They cost more, won't save any money
on fuel and are more prone to problems.

The only sensible reason to buy a new diesel today is in a truck where you need
the torque for towing or hauling heavy loads.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You could add it to a partially filled tank. I've found that a relatively small
amount of veggie oil makes a huge difference in the sound of a diesel engine. I
haven't tried in my TDI but in a 240D a quart of veggie oil in a full (or
nearly full) tank of diesel would substantially quiet the engine and give that
veggie oil smell.

Of course, it had a 20-gallon auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk!  MPG was 23.5

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Not approved and restricted are not the same thing. In 2003 we'd be talking
about an ALH or AHU engine like my '89 Jetta. Those do just fine on bio diesel,
I ran quite a bit through my '98. If it weren't for the tin-worm I'd still be
driving that car, it's my favorite.

The next generation PD engines have "mixed" results apparently but up B80 seems
fine. This is the generation where pressures start to get serious. Angie's '05
Golf has the PD engine.

Then you get into the common rail engines, the issue here is the post injection
for emissions. Typical emissions getting in the way. I will say that my '15
Jetta makes no diesel smoke or smell ever. Angie's '05 generally makes a puff
of smoke when it first starts, that puff goes away quickly and there is no
smoke or smell after that.

I buy most of my TDI parts from ID Parts, they're in state for me and are nice

We did a trip to PA last weekend where Angie was taking a Tai-Chi instructor

Re: [MBZ] OT: Coleman fuel alternative?

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Will work fine in a KEROSENE Coleman lantern. It'll burn in a regular lantern
you just need some preheat, I actually did a video on that recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjE1pCY_VjU

NOT for use in wick lanterns, it's got lower vapor pressure so as the tank
warms up it can off-gas causing the lantern to run away.

Re: [MBZ] Colemans

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Depends on the lantern, Coleman did make kerosene specific lanterns. You need
to preheat to get kerosene to light, fortunately we know a guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_CJZrpGCAQ

There is big debate about RUG (regular unleaded gas) in a Coleman lantern.
Nobody disputes that it will work, Coleman makes dual fuel lanterns
specifically for this. There are 2 prime points of contention:
1. RUG will clog the lantern generator (vaporizer) faster
This is true but probably not important "faster" is still a pretty long time
horizon
2. RUG has nasty additives you probably don't want to be breathing.
So don't use it indoors

I'd add one other point, RUG has a substantially higher water content than
canned fuel, you probably shouldn't leave it in the tank long term as it will
cause/promote rust. This is especially important for lanterns made after WWII
but before the 1970s. Some time in the mid '70s Coleman started coating the
inside of the steel tanks to resist rust better. Lanterns made before WWII are
mostly brass...

Re: [MBZ] W116 no shut off

2022-04-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
NAPA is always more expensive but they usually have stuff and their staff tends
to be a LOT smarter than Autozone. I always wonder how the employees at my
local Autozone remember to breathe.

The worst story I have about NAPA was last year when I had a discount code from
joining their loyalty program, they couldn't figure out how to apply the, I
think 5% loyalty discount so the manager just gave me 10% off...

To top it off was going to run to Autozone this morning to get the Frontier
starter tested and exchanged. Started the 300SD and heard some squealing belts.
Checked and the alternator belts were a bit slack. Tightened those up.
Disconnected the main vacuum line to the door locks and interior stuff, where
it branches off near the brake booster, and plugged it. Engine shut-off works
now. I'll deal with finding the leak later.

Backing out of the driveway, heard a loud scraping sound. The exhaust had
fallen off. The rubber donuts that hold up the exhaust were all rotted and
picked that moment to let go. I had a mental note that I needed to check those
but had not gotten around to it. I guess it's better than it falling off on the
road.

I had one spare rubber donut on the shelf, so with that and some zip-ties I got
the exhaust hung back up. At that point I was two hours behind planned schedule
so I decided to go to NAPA which is a lot closer than Autozone but they don't
test starters, and their prices tend to be higher. But, as luck would have it
they had a "bucket" sale where you buy a 5 gallon bucket for $5 and get 20% off
anything you can fit in the bucket. So I ended up getting that discount on the
starter for the Frontier.

They also had two rubber donuts which I bought, I'll order some more from FCP
Euro.

It's always something.

Economy (and Power King, same thing, a little bigger) tractors are rad. Bigger
than a normal lawn tractor they're much more capable.

That seems like a pretty good set although I don't see a plow there.
Plow/harrow combo is a lot more work to break ground than a rototiller. Faster
for a large area, not that great for a normal garden...

That seems like a pretty fair price.

I had a quick look under the car, starter looks easy enough to get at, two big
