Re: [MBZ] Pretty and rare color

2021-06-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
29 mpg is pretty unimpressive. My 2010 Dodge RAM 4wd 4x4 v8 will do 20mpg
without too much trouble and its huge by comparison. Newer trucks do way better.
My Jetta TDI has nearly made it to 60mpg, for a full size sedan that's pretty
great. It scoots right along and a full size human (I'm 6') can sit in the back
seat with plenty of leg room even with the front seat all the way back. If I
put the front seat all the way back I can't depress the clutch pedal all the
way.

Rebates for efficiency are great. Some of you might remember my talking about
a hybrid water heater awhile ago. I talked to a high school buddy who is a
plumber. In Maine plumber's get the rebate instantly so no paperwork to figure
out, he just needed my address. We ended up getting a hybrid 50 gallon hot
water heater for about the price of a conventional 40 gallon unit plus a 10
year warranty instead of 6.In the end we got an AO Smith because thats what
Lowes in Presque Isle sells. So if something goes wrong and we need it replaced
we can source one locally. My favorite part of the deal was when my plumber
buddy said "Oh yeah, that's the one I have."

[MBZ] Delvac 1 at Tractor Supply

2021-06-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't know why I bother to try Tractor Supply for anything, they rarely have
what I want. Case in point: today I went looking for hydraulic parts to finish
my loader. They had 3 of 4 hoses I wanted but 0 of 4 fittings.Surplus Center
has all of the bits in stock, they'll be here Wednesday for 1/3 of the cost...
Anyway what I have been seeing at TSC is Delvac 1 in 2.5 gallon jugs for $52.
That's $20.80 a gallon or $5.20/qt for Marshall Booth's favorite oil.
Unfortunately none of my VWs use it but I bought a jug for the dirty old Ferd
tractor and the lawnmower fleet. Thinking ahead I might buy a couple more jugs,
I don't reckon we'll ever see it cheaper and I bet it won't go "bad" in 3-4
years.

I should note that $2,000/mo is just for my classes, the guy who teaches the

Depends on what you've got for rocks. Around here all kinds of people are
using them for stuff like test pits for ground water testing. Where you used to

I considered one for use on the farm before I bought the tractor. I'm now kinda
shopping 3pt hitch backhoes. I'm seeing them used in the $2500 range. For real

Around where my folks live there were a few riding groups that also wanted to
go out and see the sights, its the coast of Maine, seems nice right? Well these
folks thought they could just get out of work a little early and go for a ride.
So every Friday night around 4:30pm 20 or so riders would go 5 abreast all
around town, during rush hour. They wouldn't yield for anybody and you had to
creep along behind them until you parted ways with them. They were totally
obnoxious. If you were sitting at a stop sign they would swarm around you and
then take off ahead of you, often cutting off traffic and nearly causing
accidents.
This went on for about a month until enough people called the police that the
group was met by a group of officers whole explained that they could ride
politely or not ride at all. They tried to keep up their antics and were
quickly shut down, IIRC bikes were impounded, charges were filed. It got quite

yeah but for some reason they need to be codified to keep the idiots
somewhat in line.

A coupla years ago there was a group doing these tour rides around here,
maybe a dozen people would sign up for a week or two and they would have
vans to take the riders to different areas around to ride maybe 30 or 40
miles a day, just see the sights, have a picnic somewhere nice.  I saw a
group of them at one point and chatted with them, had seen the vans
carrying the people and the bikes a few times.  Some woman on the next
island over took exception to being inconvenienced (meaning she had to
wait maybe 20sec to pass the group, if that, on roads that are seldom
busy, which is why they were riding out there) as she was towing a horse
trailer.  She got on FB and started ranting about how she was going to
"take out" the whole group next time they got in her way, her big truck
and 7000lb horse trailer would make short work of them.  She was proud
of that.  I pointed out that this would be premeditated murder if she
did so, or even if she was ever involved in an incident with a cyclist
it would show premeditation to do harm, and that would be really Not
Good for her prognosis at the hands of Peter Wilborn (who wrote the
law).  I shared the post and the subsequent discussion with a friend who
runs the local cycling group, she shared it with the Sheriff who
immediately dispatched 2 deputies to this woman's residence and sat down
with her for quite some time and explained what she had gotten herself into.

Subsequent to that some of her peeps determined that this tour company
did not have a County business license and were doing business in the
County (which was something of a stretch, as there are any number of
outfits that do business in the County without a license, trucking
companies and whatnot, and any others you could think of that do not
have a physical presence. These people hounded the tour companies and
County staff about it for weeks, whether they were justified or not.  In
any case this tour company and another one said F it and quit doing
tours, to the detriment of other businesses that benefited from the
people -- hotels, restaurants, whatever else.

These are the mentalities that laws are needed to address, unfortunately
usually after the fact of a incident.  I have been involved in one or
two others where aggressive drivers who were inconvenienced by a few
seconds gave me a brushback, one of them I chased down into a parking
lot where he was working at a restaurant, got pics of him and his truck
and went to the Sheriffs Office local station and was going to file an
incident report and get some action going.  The cops were pleasant
enough until they recognized the individual, a young hothead who had
been a deputy up until a year previously, when he was fired after he
beat up a motorist he had stopped (and turns out the guy was a criminal,
but that was not relevant to his actions) and the SO had to pay the vic
$300k.  The cops said they would take care of it, I asked what that
meant, they said not to worry it would be taken care of. That was
weird.  I looked the guy up later and found it was this hothead and
remembered the story then.  I don't know whatever happened, maybe
someone did have a chat with him.  He actually tried to run me over in a
roundabout just before the shopping area where he worked, I think he was
late for his shift and felt terribly inconvenienced that he actually had
to give way to me on my bike at 11AM on a Sunday when there was very
little traffic of any kind.

But whatever, there is just a lot of foolishness that laws have to be
made to address

There are cell phone controlled switches for turning on aircraft engine
heaters remotely in the winter. You could use one of those to power a DPST
latching relay that could turn the water heater on and off as needed.

[MBZ] OT: Pressure washer

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Another "exciting" story from our trip. I hauled home Dad's pressure washer
yesterday. Its a Troy Bilt 2700psi with a 175cc Briggs "Commercial" engine on
it.
As with everything that sits in my dad's shed I had to evict a mouse nest. Then
put new o-rings in the sprayer part. Amazingly my Harbor Freight o-ring set had
some to fit. Also amazingly a generic hose washer with some sil-glide brake
lube sealed nicely, no leaks on either side.
The engine obviously wasn't stored well, no fuel flow at all. I had to take the
gas line off and blow carb cleaner through the inlet. The needle was covered in
a tar like substance. I didn't know gas in anything could smell worse than from
an old snowmobile. I don't remember when he got the sprayer but I don't think
dad has ever run it, so its probably sat 5 years or more.
The dang thing is so safety-ficated it's terrible to work on, plastic covers
over the carb, no choke control "it's automatic!", no fuel shut off... I got it
so it'll pop if I squirt some carb cleaner into it but it won't stay going. Of
course you have to have water in the pump all the time which is a PITA.
Tomorrow I'll see if I can come up with a fuel shut off so I don't have to lose
all the gas every time I do anything. I think it's not flowing gas into the
carb again.
Oh well, ideally I'll get it going and use it to take the paint off the house
before we paint it in July. Its got a variety of nozzles from "delicate" for
things you don't want to ruin to "sandblaster" for things you do...

A sort of dehumidifier too right?
Is yours "smart"? I'm wondering if I could turn ours off when we're not there
and then tell it to heat water via the app a day or so in advance of our

The weather station in my camp says the low temp for last year was -33.5F and
it was a mild winter. I can't imagine living in that old house with almost zero
insulation in the kitchen: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SJhtWSRmthvz8ix16 that's
an exterior wall, less than an inch of wood between the inside and the

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electrical question

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Not a shower at least, there isn't one. There is a tub but no shower head.
Caldon's grandparents moved into the house in 1920. It's an interesting place,
the original house was built in 1888, you can see the hand hewn timbers in the
basement. Then at some point before 1920 somebody added on basically doubling
the house, that section is dimensional lumber but "real" dimension. Again you
can see the split in the basement. At some point, which I haven't been able to
determine, somebody put a full basement under the place. It's poured concrete,
at least 10 feet high, I can't touch the rafters from the floor. Very well
done, I can't find any cracks in it to speak of.
I don't think it gets wet, while we're not far from the river we're probably 50
feet above where it is normally and 20 feet above even the most extraordinary
flood events of the last 100 years. The basement doesn't smell wet, there is a
bunch of cordwood stored down there (old cedar telephone poles mostly) that are
all solid and show no signs of rot, there isn't a water line on the wall
anywhere that I can find...

[MBZ] OT: Water heater

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So one great story I got out of the trip up north. About 30 years ago Caldon
thought that the electric water heater was "too expensive" to run so he shut it
off.
Yeah, think about that one for a second, he lived for 30 years with no hot
water. "If I wanted hot water I put a pan on the stove." he told me.
He also didn't drain it for all that time, they did drain it last winter
thankfully. When I turned on the water what came out of the water heater looked
like cafe latte...
Anyway our eventual plan was to replace the electric stove and oil furnace with
propane and probably to do on-demand propane hot water too. That's 3-5 years
into the future though so I was planning to replace the old hot water heater
with a shorty one. Then I priced hot water heaters. Turns out the little ones
are MORE expensive.I also discovered that Maine has a $750 rebate on a hybrid
hot water heater. It seems to me like that is a perfect solution for a summer
house. Home Depot lists a 40 gallon Rheem with a 10 year warranty for $1200,
with the rebate it puts us maybe $100 over what I would pay for a conventional
hot water heater. It'll be basement mounted, I don't see any problems, if it
gets too cold I could just put a fire in the wood stove, or maybe run a
circulation fan from upstairs.
Am I missing something? I know these have been mentioned here before.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electrical question

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Hmm, good points. I think maybe I'll put a piece of plywood to block the pump
and piping from the switch and mount it on the opposite side. So 2' higher than
the pump but with a 2' wide wall between the pump and the switch.
40 years ago is when Caldon moved into the house, he's done basically nothing
to it in that time. Or rather, he hasn't fixed anything other than putting a
piece of cracker box over a broken window pane. He did pull all the insulation
and wall board out of the kitchen...

Pressure switches should cut out when the pressure gets too low, too.
That way a catastrophic leak will cause it to shut off, likewise if the water
supply dries up.  Combination floor-saver and pump-saver.  Mine has a lever
you have to hold until the pressure builds up some.

That pump looks closer to 60yo to me, than 40.

Re: [MBZ] OT AWD and tire wear

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Undiagnosed strut failure on my Jetta caused the fronts to rapidly wear. Now
that I have replaced them the tire pressure monitoring nanny is unhappy. I
think this car has the more primitive tire pressure monitoring system where
it's actually monitoring rotation rate and comparing the wheels, the fronts are
somewhat larger than the rears so it thinks the rears are down on pressure.
That's only a guess on my part, the tires are all actually at the same
pressure. I'm hoping as the fronts wear it'll balance out.
I needed to replace one barely used tire on the pickup due to an unfortunate
meeting with a curb, I think it has a similar tire pressure monitoring system
and it was equally upset. After 1000 miles to camp and back it seems to have
mostly worked it out now though. The light came on a couple times when we first
left camp but after the tires warmed up it went out and stayed out...

So I realized today that the tires on the Element had been neglected as
far as regular rotation. As a result, the fronts were significantly more
worn than the rears.

Reading about how the AWD works on that car, it's normally FWD with a
hydraulic clutch that engages the rear wheels when needed.

There are dual pumps in the rear differential. One pump is driven by the
driveshaft from the front, the other by the rear diff. If all the wheels
are turning at the same speed the pressures balance and the rear clutch
is disengaged. If the front wheels are slipping, that pump will turn
faster and create pressure that engages the rear wheels.

So there can be a problem if the front and rear tires are not the same
size. Apparently Honda says they should be within 3/4" circumference. I
measured my tires and the difference is closer to an inch.

Based on this explanation, I moved the unworn tires to the front, and
the worn tires to the rear, as they fronts will then be turning a little
slower than the rears. Hopefully the system will not see this as needing
to engage the rear drive, as it's the opposite of the front wheels
slipping.

I also inflated the rears to 35lbs and the fronts to 30. I have not yet
measured how much of a difference this makes.

I really need to just get two new front tires, but most tire shops will
not sell me two tires for this car. The rears are practically new as far
as wear; they have a lot of tread left. Thinking of just taking the two
front wheels in to the shop and having them mount two of the same tires.

[MBZ] OT: Electrical question

2021-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
IIRC I've already told you guys about our plans to rebuild the house up north.
We just returned from a 2 week trip up there. On this trip I wanted to spend
time evaluating the house and making a plan of attack. One of the things I
looked at was the water
system.https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPi2hLpSjBRTs65U6That's the pump and pressure
tank. That pump is at least 40 years old, maybe more:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/zyNUxCMYGi4eTMnv7
https://photos.app.goo.gl/6KqRFghXQA2DUe5P9This is the electric that controls
the pump, the one that actually runs the pump is the rear one, the front one is
the pump for the cistern. The "soft water system" as the previous owner says.
That system is all disconnected and hasn't been used in years.
It's hard to tell from the picture but the switch is about 8 FEET off the
ground. I can just reach it if I stand on the platform the pump is on. You can
also see that the switched being used is nestled right in the pipes...
Obviously a stupid location.
I'd like to move the whole dang thing down about 4 feet and out from the wall
about 2 feet which would put it about 2 feet above the pump and maybe a foot in
front of it. Do any of you geniuses see a reason I shouldn't? I'm going to
eliminate the soft water wiring entirely, we don't need it...
The pump works, in the third picture its turned off but I pushed the lever up
and the pump started. It built about 55# of pressure and shut off. When the
pressure gets down to about 10# it turns back on. We've got another pump so
if/when this one fails I can just swap over. It's loud but I can't complain
about it otherwise...

Actually, thinking about it a bit more, it'd depend on which engine. I *think*
that late a car could still come with the W8 engine which I suspect is really
shoehorned into the car. Its not long (W8 remember) but its fat.
Google tells me 2006 is a B6 (6th generation). I know nothing about those but
the B5 TDI engines were inline in the Passat while they were transverse in all
the other cars. The B5 Passat TDI is much easier to work on as a result.

My '98 Jetta was super sensitive to getting the wheels on just right, if they
weren't all the way in when you tightened the lugs the wouldn't get really
tight and would work loose again. The car would shake terribly as they
loosened, it would get pretty frightening on the highway.
Worst time it happened it was really cold out and the trunk had frozen shut so
I couldn't get to the lug wrench to tighten them. I had to run the heat on high
for 20 minutes and get the cabin sweltering hot to get the trunk to release.

However it is running much better now. I added about 5g of fresh gas and
half a bottle of Techron but not sure that really made a difference.

It has a dual carb setup with Webers and I took a closer look and they
don't seem to have any choke mechanism at all. So that would explain the
rough running in the cold. I guess the car was set up as a summer
driver. Not sure if such a thing is commonplace?

I found in the documentation that with the rebuilt the prior
owner installed has a 9:1 compression ratio. So I guess I should
probably buy at least mid-grade gas for it? Or premium?

I also discovered some rust on the passenger side rear floorpan. Not
catastrophic but probably need to replace about a square foot of it. A
project for next winter. The rest of the car seems solid.

Need to track down an extra wheel for a spare tire, as that is
missing. Anyone know of a good Aircooled email list?

In my talking with the tech fellow at the factory (Wayne), I was told for
desulphating they recommend one battery per charger. Since our truck has
four batteries and I have other vehicles, too ...

This model of charger (12117TC) starts working at 6.5 V; if the battery
is lower than that, it won't start.

The model 1510 (which cannot be had at $19.95) starts working at 3.0 V,
or one could use a "dumb" charger to bring the battery up initially.

Wayne also said it takes 2 - 4 weeks to rejuvenate a battery.

Recycling the "F-150 Lightning" nameplate for a truck involving
electricity is OK with me. Especially since the Lightning trademark
might have been aging into "use it or lose it" territory. (like the
Cobra name when they came out with the Pintostang Cobra II that Jill

Calling an electrified mommywagon "Mustang" is ridiculous.

Re: [MBZ] OT: "New" house up north

2021-05-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The first time I went into the house I expected it to be musty and wet. The
previous occupant hadn't been living there for like 6 months at that point. Dad
and I were very surprised to find it dry inside. Same thing this spring, nobody
had lived in the house all winter but it doesn't have any sign of smell.
I think that years of wood heat have probably kept the place pretty dry. A good
tin roof (Amish workmanship) will hopefully keep things that way...

[MBZ] OT: Lawnmower belts

2021-05-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yesterday being the good son I swapped the snowblower for the lawnmower deck on
my dad's little 2014 John Deere. Everything went pretty well but after 2 laps
of the yard it ate the belt. Well poo, that was supposed to be a quick job.
NAPA was open and had a belt, I also grabbed a gallon of Turbo Diesel truck for
an oil change.
Anyway I got everything installed, oil changed, made 2 more laps of the yard
and it spat the belt again. This time it was so hot I couldn't touch it.
I'd noticed the deck was wicked noisy but it was last year too. Now taking the
guards off I think the deck had been dropped at some point, the left side
pulley is badly bent and the belt guard had been rubbing which is probably what
made the noise.Dad is going to get a new pulley and I'll install it next week.
So today I decide to mow my own lawn with my 1965 Snapper rear engine rider. I
made about 3 laps and wouldn't you know the dammed thing spat out the
belt...Looking at my records that belt has been on there since 2010...I ordered
another belt, the snapper uses a double v belt which is to say it has a V on
both sides, the idler pulley isn't flat. $18, seems like a fair price for 11
years...

It suggests you'll need to add a charger."IMPORTANT: Only use Lithium Lifepo4

Lithium batteries can be safely discharged lower than lead acid. Lead acid is

Re: [MBZ] Lithium batteries

2021-05-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm seeing that in the off grid solar community a lot lately. The extended
lifespan of lithium is supposed to provude considerable savings over lead acid.
Unfortunately I guess at least some lithium batteries don't like extreme cold.
I just checked and the weather station in the camp says -33.5F was the minimum
temp last winter. I'm not sure lithium batteries are right for us.

While the ones you linked are absurdly expensive you're getting twice the CCA
for less than half the weight.
Looking around that site I see that to replace the 2x 100ah batteries I have
would be $1800 but would actually give me more usable power because you can
safely do a deeper discharge on lithium than on lead acid cells. I'm not going
there but it's interesting to know whats available.

2021-05-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think Randy is correct on all points. The gas engines available today are so
powerful, fuel efficient and long-lived the advantages of a diesel are
considerably less than they used to be.
Last night I hauled the dirty old Ferd to Maine. 4,000# tractor on what is
probably a 1,000# trailer. Dodge RAM 1500, 5.7l hauled it no problem. 390HP, it
did hold in 4th (5spd automatic) to pull hills but I never felt like I couldn't
accelerate.
3/4 ton and heavier trucks need more expensive tires too, like twice the money.
Insurance and tax will be more too...

on F250 diesel trucks. The usual cost was around $9,000 when the head
gaskets started to leak. You cannot remove the heads without removing
the cab so labour is high and parts are expensive. Just routine
maintenance is high given the amount of oil they require and the cost of
fuel filters etc. If you avoid the routine service, then you have more
likely troubles. Plus, living in ND in the winter is a tough place for a

He would likely be much better off with a gas powered truck.

One of my favorite things about a 240D is that it'll easily drive up onto a
set of ramps. Mine are also old Sears ramps. To get my Jetta up on ramps
requires 3 pieces of 2x6 to make a ramp so the front air dam doesn't hit.

A set of ramps is usually pretty easy.  Son just welded the muffler back on
the 190D using a set of green pressed steel ramps.  (Old Sears product?)

Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter

I think Jamie is right. My '85 190D had some weird shifter issues, it's been a
long time but I remember not being able to find reverse reliably and having to
push it out of a couple parking spaces. New shifter bushings fixed it.

 HI John,
Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of
them, so 6 bushings) are probably gone.  This causes the levers on the
shifter to end up in odd places and occasionally jam.  There are also
bushing in the shifter itself that can contribute to the problem.  Best
action is to order up all the bushings from the classic center and spend a
weekend rebuilding everything.  You'll be surprised by how nice it can all
be when repaired properly.

Good luck

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Using Baltimore as a benchmark it's nearly 800 miles from the great northern
estate in Caribou.
We've got some pretty great thorns up north too. Last fall I shot a partridge
in a hedgerow and then realized that I couldn't get to it. I don't know what
the bushes are but they've got 1" long thorns that are just vicious. I ended up
crawling 50 feet on my belly each way to retrieve the bird.
Now I'm debating, on the one hand, the bush hog will make short work of those
thorns. On the other, if the birds like the thorn bush maybe I should keep it...

And they're willing to take on jobs the big mills won't or can't. As you say
they're geared for efficiency so they only take trees of a certain size, I
think 12-18" at the butt or something like that. When we had the logging done on
our place they cut some huge spruce trees that marked the line. Those trees had
been planted as a WPA project in the '30s and were around 36" at the butt. The
big mills wouldn't take them, the Amish fell all over themselves to get them.

I should hope so.  They're uniquely qualified to react quickly.  Mainline
business has
been all about efficiency for a long time now.  Cheaper in steady state, but
much slower
to react to emergencies, with huge capital startup expenses.  The Amish, who
are hard
workers and don't use much automation, usually on a smaller scale, could
probably start
a mill quicker than anybody else.  They SHOULD be making bank right now.

Both steel and sawmills have been reducing for the last few years. Lumber
production has been in decline for 10-15 years. It's a big deal to restart a
mill, in some cases the equipment and employees just don't exist anymore.
The Amish built a small sawmill in Fort Fairfield, Maine last year (or the year
before, I forget). They appear to be doing a gangbuster's business now...

Good question. The lumber shortage is mostly a shortage of finished
product. Supplies of timber, especially in the southern US forests, are
plentiful. There *are* some issues in Canada from what I've read.

It's the finished lumber that is in short supply. Many sawmills shut
down expecting vast drop-offs in demand due to COVID and lockdowns. The
opposite happened, and they haven't caught up yet.

If it's the same with steel, and the problem is that the mills are not
running, then they probably aren't buying scrap either so scrap prices
could conceivably be low even if demand for finished steel is high.

Re: [MBZ] Trailers

2021-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
In the area I grew up around hay bales were hauled on big flatbed trucks
loaded by high school kids much younger than the trucks.
For the home gamer a really good way to practice is with a garden cart behind a
lawn tractor. The hitch is pretty sloppy so you get maximum delay, the lawn
tractor probably doesn't steer particularly well so you need to be on the ball,
oh and the hitch is short. If you can back one of those suckers up you've done
something worth crowing about. It's actually hard to tell if its harder empty
or loaded. Loaded you've got to have traction to shove the load around but
empty the trailer will be bouncy and unpredictable...

Short trailers are really a pain. My snowmobile trailer is mostly invisible
behind the truck, I can really only see the snowmobiles.
One trick my uncle gave me is to twist back and forth, in my case I go one way
until I just spot the corner of the trailer, then cut back the other way before
I'm in trouble. Backing up straight is hard, if you already figure you're going
to take a snake path its easier.

Re: [MBZ] New toy

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't. I'm probably going to end up renting a UHaul trailer. The tractor
supposedly weighs in around 3,000#, with the loader I figure it might be around
4,000. UHaul says you're good to 4600 and I figure that'll have a safety factor
built in. My truck doesn't have a brake controller so UHaul trailers with their
surge brakes are good for me.

I casually mentioned to my buddy that I might make a quick trip up next weekend
just to deliver the tractor. We got as far as him suggesting he might be
interested in the ride. He's got a 3/4 ton truck and a trailer. I give about
60% odds he'll cave in and we'll go.

I've never had to warranty a tool at Harbor Freight. I now own 2 HF ratchets

I've warrantied several Craftsman ratchets and my 1/2" one has decided it

used to consider Car Quest next before they got bought. Sometimes you can find
an Autozone that used to be a Car Quest that still has knowledgeable help.
Local FLAPS like my local Federated Autoparts is usually in this tier.Next is
Autozone and O'Reilly although I don't have much experience with the latter.
Advance Auto tends (at least in my area) to have the stupidest employees. The
worst here was when the manager was a guy I'd gone to college. Pleasant guy but
everything he knows about cars can be explained with the time he duct taped
over the rust on his grey Ford Tempo. Some things never change...
There's a really nice new NAPA in Caribou. There is a young woman working the
counter, she's gorgeous, could be a model in a country music video and she's
sharp as a whip. I went in to get an oil filter for a Farmall Super M, she
didn't even look it up, knew what I wanted and where it was. Its funny to watch
the counter guys defer to her, she's super fast at looking stuff up when she

Not a chance.  The CPU/memory is the least part of it.  These things are full
of custom I/O and etc. now.  There are hundreds of CPUs in the current cars,
mostly fairly small ones.  How many do you have to have a shortfall on to
prevent a sale?  (Hint: one.)

The real problem is just-in-time production, and governmental inventory taxes.
Even if the silicon is very cheap (in bulk), they don't stockpile this stuff
anymore.
Which means, it only takes ONE problem to bring the whole complex mess
crashing down.

Re: [MBZ] New toy

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I intend to pick up a 5 foot bush hog for it at some point. The Super M will
probably stay the main mowing tractor but this will be a lot more handy with a
3pt mower and live PTO.
I'm going to keep my eye out for a backhoe too but I'm not too concerned about
it. I can rent an excavator for $1200/week if I really need to dig. This think
will make hauling what I dig up much easier...
I've already got a 2 bottom plow and harrows, it'll be nice to be able to have
the plow on the Super M and the harrow on the Ford.
Setting up an order for all my filters now, NAPA's website is super handy, they
even had a listing for the 1952 Super M.

Sounds like all you need.  HP isn't important except to drive PTO
attachments.  Weight (and ballast) are all-important for traction and
stability.  You may want a canopy at some point for hot-weather work.  Age
isn't important as long as parts are available.  Good for you.  We all may
need to grow food at some point.

My tractor buying saga is finally (hopefully) at it's end. Today I picked up
a 1998 Ford 1920. It's a 32hp 4wd compact tractor with front end loader.
1900 hours but it starts with just a touch of the
keyhttps://photos.app.goo.gl/Uo5en44yC5J5JeLN9
https://photos.app.goo.gl/o7g8Z4btoNSnwTj79

It's about a 20 foot machine, in the last pic you can see that its been
"repainted". But the hydraulics all move good, it makes no bad noises in any
gear (12 of them!).
The transmission is interesting, its a 4spd synchronized shuttle shift with
3 ranges which adds up to 12 speeds forward and reverse. I don't think I'll
be trying 14mph backwards...
Next step is a full service, M1 TDT in the engine and interestingly almost
everything else uses hydraulic oil from the front diff to power steering to
hydraulics...

Re: [MBZ] A (car) Moving Experience

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We were just after Christmas but there were still a lot of snowbirds moving
in. You could see them as you crossed the Florida state line, all of a sudden
there were more Lincolns/Cadillacs and Buicks on the road and you couldn't see
the driver's heads anymore... ;)

 Curt,

Since she was shipping during one of the “migration” periods and along a busy
corridor, I’m sure it was cheaper. Starting after Labor Day the migration of
snowbirds begins slowly, peaking in late October and going until Thanksgiving.
Since everyone is going in one direction and there are few going out, a lot of
carriers are deadheading back North to get more loads. Some of them contract
with rental car companies to move inventory or leasing companies who are moving
cars to other markets. That’s still a small number compared to what’s going
south at the time.

 Neat.
Back around 2002-2004 Angie and I used to drive a car to Florida from MA for a

Yes, a tractor is almost 100% guaranteed to have been working in a
dust-saturated
environment, desperately needing the 3-stage air filter put on by the factory.
(Chunk
screen, cyclonic dirt trap, and oil-bath filter.)
