Re: [MBZ] W124 delivery valve leak

2024-02-28 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Well thanks for looking. I just ordered a set of the viton o-rings from some
fuel injection shop in the UK. I’m thinking about ordering the McMaster Carr
ones as well to see if they are indeed the same size since they sell them in
bulk. I ordered the special Hazet tool last night!
Yes, I definitely should have replaced those when I did the glow plugs. It was
strongly suggested that I do, but I didn’t! I just wanted to get the car back
on the road at a time! Anyway, it seems like the job can be done with the
manifold in place, but obviously with more difficulty.

[MBZ] W124 delivery valve leak

2024-02-27 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
The 1990 300D 2.5T has a pretty bad leak at the number 4 delivery valve. I use
biodiesel extensively during the warmer months so I want to replace the o ring
with viton. The ones that Fcp euro and autohausaz sell are not marketed as
viton. Does anyone know if they are viton, and if not, where I can get viton?
There is supposedly a McMaster Carr product that works according to some random
person who commented on a YouTube video but I don’t know how reliable that
source is as the product is simply marketed as an viron O-ring with certain
dimensions. It does not specify that it can be used on an OM60X injection pump.

machine shop. Snotty elite small liberal arts colleges don’t respect this kind

[MBZ] Bad fuel leak.

2023-12-06 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I was driving the 90 300D 2.5 up to Maine from Boston today and noticed a loss
of power. I pulled over, opened the hood and noticed a very large leak at the
nut where the fuel line enters the #4 injector. I tightened the nut but that
did not help at all. I took a chance and drove the car the remaining 45 or so
miles to my house knowing that diesel isn’t that flammable as compared with
gasoline. Before I start digging into this, does this seem like a cracked fuel
line? I’m thinking it might be cracked near the fitting where it joins with the
injector. Anyone see this before in that location?

Re: [MBZ] W124 OM602 serpentine belt

2023-11-07 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
OK I did some more digging and it seems like the belt tensioner was loose. It’s
bolted to the engine block via a 12 mm Allen nut. I tightened it and it’s no
longer loose. It has a tiny bit of play but I’m not sure what’s normal.
Question is why did it become loose and should I just replace it? Should I
replace the shock for a good measure as well?

[MBZ] W124 OM602 serpentine belt

2023-11-07 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
So I finally got to replacing the serpentine belt on the 90 300D 2.5Turbo. The
belt broke leaving me stranded a couple of months ago. I attributed it to the
idler pulley being seized but it’s not actually seized. When the belt shredded
apart, bits of it got wedged behind the pulley giving the impression that it
was seized. So my question is what caused the serpentine belt to fail
catastrophically? The belt drive has been making a rattling noise for a few
years now so I assumed it was the pulley but it doesn’t seem to be bad. I have
a new one on hand so I will replace it anyway. I’m just worried that there is

The belt is mince meat! The idler pulley (or tensioner pulley, are they the
same?) is very stiff. I bet that’s what caused the belt to disintegrate. Is
this easy to replace?

The serpentine belt just broke a mile or so from home. I managed to coast back
home mostly downhill with some short spurts where I drove the car until it
started getting hot.
Anyway, I might tackle it on my own as I did the alternator on that car when I
first got it and obviously the serpentine belt had to come off for that.

housing- I know because I replaced some bulbs even though they looked fine and
because the bulb for the right turn signal actually works when the flashers are

Even if you run the piece of crap on 100% renewable energy, it’s a disposable
piece of crap. Being a disposable piece of crap, it has an inherently gigantic
carbon footprint so it’s still not green- well unless it’s a bilious turd.

signaling bullshit. If you want to protect the bees by letting the weeds grow,
great but no need to advertise it.

Exactly. Why would anyone voluntarily buy a disposable fake green piece of shit

My neighbor in Maine bought a leaf this past winter and can’t wait to get rid

Re: [MBZ] OT: I hate plumbing

2023-08-01 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Definitely the “mechanics” at the Mercedes dealerships. I mentioned a while
back that the dealership claimed that my mother’s G500 needed a new ecu which
was NLA and they suggested that it get written off as a total loss. Well, I
took it to an independent shop which spent 5 hours on it and got it running.
All they did was clean up some relays and fuses. How about that for dealership
incompetence.

So the lever should be down when the car is off and the ignition is in the off
position and if it’s up then there is a vacuum leak?

Yes, but I don’t believe it should be in the down position when the engine is
off. You should be able to push it down and once you let go it should spring
back up.

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo no start

2023-07-27 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Thanks Fred. I might take you up on that generous offer. Meanwhile, I’m
noticing a few more things. First of all, the lever was in the up position this
morning but the car still would not start although it seems like it’s closer to
starting. After cranking unsuccessfully, and turning the ignition off, I
noticed that the lever was back in the down position and when I would turn the
ignition back on and it would pop up and stay up while cranking. Once the
ignition was turned off the lever would fall back down. I’m not sure what this
means.
I haven’t heard anything from my friends and relatives in Greece!

[MBZ] 300D 2.5 Turbo no start

2023-07-26 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
The 1990 300D 2.5 Turbo has been sitting for 5 days and now it won’t start. It
glows just fine so I think it’s a fuel issue. The injector pump shut off lever
is in the depressed position. That doesn’t seem right. I can pull it up but it
just flops back down. If I hold it up while someone else cranks it still won’t
start. After many cranking attempts it almost started a few times but I was
afraid to drain the battery or kill the starter so I stopped. Not sure what’s
going on. It actually did this to me a couple of months ago after the car sat
for a month while I sorted the relay ground issue but it eventually did start.
So it seems like when the car sits it develops this problem. Maybe it’s an air
leak at the injection pump?

Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay

2023-06-13 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I fixed it! Thanks to everyone who helped! The issue was indeed a bad ground to
the relay. The ground was basically where Fred said- left front fender, under
the headlight assembly. The ground wire where it connected to the terminal was
basically corroded to dust. I cut it back to clean copper and soldered on a new
terminal connector. Who would have thought that a bad ground would masquerade
as a bad relay!

Ok so one is indeed the ground. How do I check to see if ground is working.
Kaleb said to jumper it to another known ground but how do I do that when the
connector connects everything together? Jumper every contact in the connector
with every corresponding pin on the relay? That is technically challenging to
do.

It’s a brand new relay. I bought it at the stealership! Maybe it’s a ground
issue? Where is this thing grounded?

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-14 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
So I’m thinking that maybe the ground to the relay is the problem or that there
is an ecm issue. The relay gets power but doesn’t put out power to the glow
plugs. But where is the relay grounded? The three connections are the power lug
to the battery, the harness to the glow plugs and the harness going to the
ignition. The harness going to the ignition has 5 wires. One gets power when
ignition is turn to on position. I don’t know what the other 4 do. Could one be
a ground? I assume some go to an ecm. Could a bad ecm be telling the gp relay
not to send a signal to the plugs? I’m about ready to give up and send this car
to a mechanic!

Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Glow Plug Relay

2023-05-13 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Yes my car has three connections as you describe. Big plug to glow plug, cable
to battery and small plug. Small plug corresponds to 5 pins on relay. One
connection on the plug is live only when ignition is turned on so I presume
that is the ignition on.
