[MBZ] OT Sunbeam British motor car 1958 Alfa Romeo rapier,$400

Total basket case but interesting.  I saw a bugeye Sprite this morning, 
no idea Sunbeam ever built something like this.


This is a rare in the USA. it was built by Sunbeam British motor car 
manufacturer and brand older research stated only 200 were ever imported 
to the us back in 1958. Very poor condition. has lots of rare parts. 
engine is a 4 cylinder with 2 carbs manual trans. I have a title for 
this also. (note not alfa Romeo) no listing for Sunbeam

So I'll go over to Sullivans Island tomorrow to swap it in and see if I 
can get this thing to pump up and be driveable so I can get it loaded 
more easily onto the trailer to get it home. Although it might still 
have the guy's plate on it so maybe I could get someone to be 
adventurous with me and try to drive it home!


Now $539 investment in it.  I was thinking that because the paint on it 
is really bad with clear coat peeling that it would be fun to give it a 
driveway respray.  Maybe a matte black to make it look more like a 
rapper ride.  And a muffler or resonator delete and X-pipe to get some 
throaty sound! Hoonery!


Kleb better get over here before I steal it out from under him!

I drove over to Sullivan's Island to look at this car.  It's like 75-80 
today so there was some attractive scenery out and about. It's pretty 
much a turd.  Has been sitting for a year and being on the island it is 
looking a bit grody.  Interior is not too bad, mostly, but paint is 
atrocious.  He had a blade key but the fob was in his truck so I 
couldn't do a scan on it or try to start it, battery is dead anyway.  I 
was looking at it and we were talking about it, he says he would take 
$1000 for it.  I ignored that offer and kept looking then after a few 
minutes explained the realities of a 21yo slammed Benz that has sat for 
a year in a salt air environment with some rodent evidence but did not 
offer any money for it.  I brought the battery home to charge it up and 
will go back tomorrow to see if I can get the car to come alive and see 
how bad it is.  I'm thinking LOBALL at $300 although that might be too 
insulting, so maybe $400.  He was maintaining it until a year ago for 
reasons not entirely clear, and it has fairly decent 4yo tires on it, so 
that is positive, but as it sits it is a parts car.  If it's only a bad 
airmatic pump (or fuse or relay after sitting) that would be simple 
cheepcheep fix then flip it.


Or Kaleb will come and get it before I can sell it out from under him.

I liked the thing for what it did while it was connected to the car, 
lots of functions.  If it had a wifi connection while connected it will 
send the reports from scans.  It also has a USB power cable so it can be 
plugged in that way, and supposedly send the reports then when it is 
powered up inside and connected to wifi.  It also needed to be powered 
up to initially configure the unit.


Problems I had with it were that it was very intermittent on coming 
alive when plugged in to USB power.  Either nothing happened or it got 
stuck in a boot loop and would never get to the options menus.  The 
first time I plugged it in after a few hours it seemed to come alive and 
I could configure it. Thereafter it would mostly come alive after I 
scanned the car, saved reports, then came back inside and plugged it in 
to USB power, but then it quit doing that.  I sent it back and got 
another one, it would not boot up fully when I plugged it in initially, 
either nothing or stuck in a splash screen loop.  I sent it back the 
next day.


I think when Dan and I ordered the first on it was $119, now $129. Again 
I would say it is a very good little scanner, functionally, but for some 
reason it will not work when plugged into "shore" power.  Note that this 
unit is a chinee version, the company has a US presence and sells other 
units, but they won't support this unit.  I never pinged the chinee 
company, just got tired of fooling with the thing.

When you drill down into the codes it gives you the DTC number and a button 
that does a Google search for that number, which is also nice. You can do 
actuations and read actual values, too. Much easier to do when doing a driving 
test.

It’s literally an SDS system in a handheld device. I ran it against my SDS and 
everything came out the same.

We went over to the stealer and picked up the 97 Sub, I paid the bill 
and owed her $100.  They just did an oil change and some minor stuff.  
Had to jump it as the battery was weak from sitting or maybe it is going 
bad.  But drove it home no problems.  It's going to need a few things 
sorted but nothing fatal, mostly because it has not been driven much in 
1.5yr.  I'll do belt and hoses and the AC needs a charge and she said 
the PS was leaking some so probably a new pump although I did not see 
any leaks. And a good cleaning.


She bought this truck new in 97 and it has always been dealer serviced, 
she has all the records she is going to send to me. Including a new 
transmission not that many miles ago (It's at 357kmi now!).  So that is 
pretty good.


Anyway, I guess it is something to have around, good tow truck, it will 
tow 6500lb, the GL 7000.  I should sell the GL now and maybe make a few 
$$ off it.  This Sub will be a lot less problematic and cheap to keep going.

This friend of mine has a 97 Suburban with like 350kmi on.  She has
always had it stealer serviced since new.  Put in a new transmission 4
or 5 years ago and had lots of other stuff done with it.  It's actually
in pretty decent shape, no rust, body good, clear coat peeling, good
tires, tow package, but has a few little issues, nothing fatal. It's the
same colors as my 96 pickup that was my dad's so hard to tell them
apart. It looks nice.

A year or so ago she bought a GLK and had this thing parked at the Vast
Estate while she bought a new house away from here, moved, all that.  So
a few weeks ago she decides she wants to get the Sub fixed up as a spare
and I drove it to the stealer again.  It was not a high priority so it
sat a bit, they finally got to it, did an oil change and diagnostic on
stuff, $278.  They came up with a $3500 estimate for radiator, hoses,
(it is slowly leaking some coolant from somewhere) belt, and a few other
odds and ends.  Again nothing fatal but stuff that is reasonable to do.
Stealer pricing!

I had told her at some point she didn't need the thing but she had
nostalgia for it and wanted to keep it but this bill scared her off.
She offered it to her daughter who has no interest in it.  So today she
asks me if I still want it.  I tell her it depends on the number.  She
talks around it all a bit and I tell her she can let me know, we can go
get it, I'll keep it around, whatever.

She finally says $500.  We'll go get it, you can pay for the work, give
me the other $200whatever and it's yours.  Deal.  How could I pass 
that up.


So having just bought that GL450 for towing I'm thinking this old Sub
would be better so I should sell the GL on and use the Sub for towing.
Choices choices, but for $500...
