I agree that he did not have a major impact on film. But he has had a
lasting cultural influence. Was the Webb song named for his novel? And he
certainly gave us the TANSTAAFL acronym.

As much as I like and respect RAH's work, I don't see much of his influence
in current (pop) culture _via_ the movies that were made. (My original
thesis.)

I'm waffling on Burroughs. The ripples are dying out.

There has been a lot of discussion that the Terminator series was based on some

Hard to think of authors who have had more influence on our culture, pop or
otherwise, by way of movies, than him. IMHO there's a short list he's on,
here in no particular order:

Philip K. Dick
Ian Fleming
J.K. Rowling
J.R.R. Tolkien
Mary Shelley
Stephen King

That doesn't even begin to consider those whose influence wasn't primarily via
movies,
such as Clarke, Heinlein, Asimov, Verne, Wells, Shakespeare...

One could argue lists like these for days! I only put a few minutes' thought
into this,
I'm sure I left out plenty. Or, put in too many? Discuss. :-)

So what do you think? Do they dream of electric sheep?

A friend of mine had some connection to Philip Dick, had a draft manuscript of
the book. That was what I read at the time.

The original film was quite a work too!

I had always felt a kinship of my occupation with the bladerunner. I was really
good at spotting the replicants.

Both of your observations match mine. I do recall being very impressed with
the book, then disappointed with his following works. The '84 movie was
poor. This one certainly needs a middle and end, but I also thought I needed
to watch it again. Why don't we have any great contemporary scifi like we
used to have?

I once met Ray Bradbury. I told him he was one of my favorite authors. He

The new Dune is just as long as the '84 version but ends about a third of
the way through the story. It looks like the first episode of a trilogy or
mini-series but I see nothing online about follow-on episodes.

I found the book confusing when I first read it back in the '60s but the
book has several appendices that explain things. Several times I stopped
reading the main story to read the relevant appendix. I think Dune could be
a good series (more than 3 episodes) but it is (IMO) foolhardy to try to
tell the whole story in a movie.

There were several other sequel and prequel books based on Dune. Some
better than others. The prequels explained how the Dune-era "world order"
came to be.

I am currently watching this new Dune movie that I guess is a remake of the
1984 Dune movie. So far it is about a confusing and boring as the first
Dune movie. It has been decades since I have seen the original so maybe I
need to try to watch it again for comparison.

2020-09-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Early Sunday morning my next door neighbor had someone cutting down a big tree
right next to his house. I thought it odd to start a project like that at 0800
Sunday, but I'm an early riser so no big deal. As I watched the weather report
yesterday evening, and watched the standing snags on the county property behind
my house swaying crazily in the wind, I wondered if my insurance coverage is
high enough!

I need to call my agent, as well as ask the county about those trees.

While working on the cursed Focus alternator replacement (successful,
finally) I failed to notice a nest of yellow jackets in the ground
behind my work area. This is the time of year that they seem to be
really active/aggressive around here.

One of them nailed me in the wrist on Sunday afternoon. My left forearm
now looks like Popeye the Sailor's arm (OK not quite that bad but
definitely puffy, swollen, tight skin, some clear fluid weeping in
spots, from the mid-forearm down to my knuckles. Cannot make a fist with
that hand right now due to the swelling.

I react that way to yellow jackets. Not much to do about it but wait it
out. Bee stings, other wasps don't seem to have nearly that effect.

I dispatched the nest that evening with a big load of insecticide spray,
after they had all returned for the night.

They said they were ordering a new one from Trane. Hopefully that is
what happens. I’m still wondering if the fan quit working and it
burned up the compressor. You would think they would habe checked
that because it’s not like compressor kicks on then shuts off later
if pressure gets too high. It just does not kick on at all.

Fan goes out again less than a year later, I call the guy, he comes
out and finds a rescue motor instead of the real deal. So I tell him
we paid like $500 for this, why is it a substandard unit? He hems
and haws and tells me he can put in the right motor but he'll have to
charge me $75 for a visit. I tell him how about you do what your guy
was supposed to have done, and you charged us for, and I won't see

Nice. That could be fun.

The youngest son and I were trying out our sporting clay club’s new rifle range
today. 100 yards long, which is nice.

I took my Yugoslavian SKS and the youngster took his new Remington 700
chambered in 300 magnum. Needless to say he has a very sore shoulder. I do not,
as the SKS was hitting steels flawlessly with minimal recoil. Gotta love those
stripper clips.

Lots of fun was had by all.

What about the lower front shock mounts on the control arms?
I broke one, ruining a Bilstein shock in the process, got both
welded/reinforced, then rebroke the broken one again within a month, about
exactly the time my right rear upper tower gave out. And I lived on a dirt

My STAR system is on a VM that runs off an external drive. It works fine, but
it’s sluggish and I don’t care to have the hassle of an external drive. I found
a larger hard drive for my laptop, but I want to move the VM to the larger hard
drive and put it into the laptop as the boot drive.

I have both VMware Workstation on a PC as well as VirtualBox on a PC and my
Mac. Here’s the process I want to use:

STAR VM
Clonezilla ISO
320 GB IDE hard drive connected to host via USB

I’ll set up the Clonezilla ISO to boot, which should allow me to copy the VM to
the physical drive. This is a common method to copy a VM to a physical device.

Here’s the rub:

I can’t get the VM to recognize the USB connected drive as a hard drive. While
it gives me the ability to add one via the VM settings, it wants to see a .vmdk
or similar virtual drive, not a physical drive. Apparently there are ways to
create a vmdk file that “points” at a physical drive, but I’ve been
unsuccessful in getting this to work.

I’m stumped as to how to proceed at this point. There’s got to be a way to get
the VM to recognize the USB hard drive.

I think we were preoccupied by fear before the lightning strike. It was almost
dark, even at midday, the wind was very loud, the raindrops actually hurt, and
we had no visual references.. The excitement was really in retrospect. The
"bang" was really loud and I think it stunned us, like a "flash-bang" grenade.
We only realized what happened after the fact when we regained our senses.

I guess. Fried my uverse modem which is about 6ft from where I was sitting so
I’m thinking it came through the (buried) phone line. Again.

This is like the fifth time this has happened, I guess the lightning induces a
high voltage spike in the line. I try to tell the ATT people I need an arrestor

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I had a trap range near my house way back, and used to take my scarred,
plain-Jane field grade Rem. 870 once in a while. I was never a great
shotgunner, but could usually break better than 20 out of 25.

One day a guy next to me had a nice engraved Browning auto. His score was not
good, but his sense of humor was spot on. When we had finished the set he
turned to me and said:

"That's a really nice shotgun you have there!"

I’ve never paid a lot of attention, but it seems that the hard core guys that
come out every weekend with their own golf carts and shooting vests and such
all use O/Us. I got grouped with a guy at a fundraising shoot last year that
was trashing everyone who didn’t have a Beretta. He made fun of my “import gun”
even though he had never heard of Lanber (very well known in Europe and Down
Under despite being out of business now). As most shooters would do, I offered
to let him shoot it, but he refused and started in with the “nothing but a
Beretta” crap while everyone rolled their eyes.

We all shot better than this guy. He was pretty quiet by the time we got to the
last stand. It was clear he was a hack, as his stance, pull and other aspects
of his form were all out of kilter. One of the other guys in our group offered
in a very diplomatic manner to give him some pointers but the guy blew him off.

My former boss was the guy with the Mossberg and my shooting coach. He’s still
shooting well with that gun, and has no desire to buy anything else. The idea
that the more expensive a gun is makes you a better shooter will never offset
poor technique or fit.

I have a Browning BPS pump in 12 ga. 3 1/2" magnum. I got stopped once by the

As someone else pointed out, he does not mention replacing the hoses.
Having gone to all that trouble and expense to get the system working
properly, if he didn't replace the hoses as well, he will have leaks,

I found a pair of vintage Marantz speakers on CL that had already had the

cash out some of my obsolete TEAC, JVC, Yamaha and other obsolete/unused gear.
eBay shows some good prices on some of this stuff. I saw my TEAC cassette deck

the restaurant biz and often attends the frequent going out of business
auctions. At one of these he bought a bunch of commercial dishwashers that
complete the cycle in 15-20 min. He has one in his home. I went along on one of
these trips and learned some interesting stuff, like that some of the stuff was
being purchased by the principals of the restaurants that went out of business,
going into a new business.

I think all dishwashers these days take that long or longer due to conservation
etc. We had a fairly recent Maytag that we bought 5 years ago they took 3-4
hours on the heavy duty cycle. The Bosch we have now takes a little under 3
hours on heavy duty.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] Barry Manilow

While it has been many years, in the summer in junior/senior years of high
school and later before I was in tech school I used to drive a semi with a
Landoll trailer carrying a 350kW generator set and cables to be used by the
various tours as they went around the Midwest. A lot of the venues back in that
time didn’t have adequate house power to run their whole show, so they would
run the sound off house power and used our generator for lighting.

I would often follow a given show for a week at a time, sometimes more, as they
toured around the Midwest. We also had a standing gig with Market Square Area
and the Clay Courts in Indianapolis for the same thing, so in some cases I
would be doing it during the rest of the year locally, too.

I was first in, last out. For a typical 8:00 pm show I had to be there no later
than 8:00 am, sound check was usually around 2:00-3:00, then cool my heels
until the show started. A lot of times we wouldn’t have everything struck at
the prior venue until 2:00 - 3:00 am, which meant I might have to high tail it
a couple hundred miles to the next venue, like maybe Louisville to Columbus or
St. Louis, for example. Longer distances usually meant a travel day in between.
Lots of sleeping in the truck.

Some of the artists I toured with:

Rush
Fleetwood Mac
Don Henley
Stevie Nicks
Kiss
Foreigner
Phil Collins
Def Leppard
Dire Straits
AC/DC
Journey
REO Speedwagon
Pat Benatar
ZZ Top
Heart
Toto
Kenny Loggins
Steve Winwood

I’m sure there were others, but these are the ones I recall. All I can say is
that while it was fun, sort of, it made me realize what a crappy way to make a
living it was. I had to carry a firearm because I always got paid in cash by
the road manager before the end of the show, so I always had large sums of cash
on me until the morning when I could deposit it if I could find the right bank
where we were. I was not union, so at the union (IATSE) halls I had to have a
union member “assigned” to me that made all the final connections and I pretty
much just flipped the switch and made sure all was well. Once that was done I
was free to hit the buffet if there was one for the crew.

My recollections about artists are as such:

Rush was the absolute best band to work for. They had a dedicated crew that
toured exclusively with them, some of them having been with the band for some
time. Food was excellent and they (Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson) were always very
nice and came by before the show to thank everyone. Molson and cold shrimp were
some of the regular things on the after show buffet, and they always had a
“to-go” kit of food and goodies for everyone on the crew after things were
broken down/struck. A good breakfast was out on the morning of the show, too,
with lots of fresh fruit and good things to eat.

Don Henley’s entourage was the worst. That was one of those “avert your eyes
when the “artist” is moving through the wings and backstage.” A real douche. No
buffet or food, a pile of order-out pizza and cooler full of generic soda was
all they would put out, and it was rarely enough to feed everyone.

Keep in mind that food is always provided by the venue/promoter and costs the
act a minimal amount of money, if any, as it’s factored into the cost of the
show and spelled out in the rider in advance. That’s the contract that says “no
brown M’s.” So if a tour does a crappy job on food for the crew, it’s on the
tour, not the venue.

Understand that as a crew member you rarely see the talent. If you do, they’re
moving through backstage from point A to point B with their entourage around
them, so you often can’t even see them if you tried. The only ones I recall
circulating backstage were Rush, ZZ Top and I think Kenny Loggins. They would
often hang around and chat a little bit after the sound check. As I mentioned
before, Rush would come around and thank everyone before the show.

I really don’t recall a lot of details, as it was 40 years ago, but those are
the ones that stand out. The rest were pretty decent because they recognized
the value of keeping the help happy. It was still a crappy gig, but I got paid
pretty well for the time, I think $200/day in cash.

Put the car on the DAS and ran a full set of diagnostics. A few bangs,
some we expected, like EGR which is disabled, but a couple for the SBC.
Ran the SBC diagnostics and sure enough, left front pressure is below
spec. Explained the 25 year warranty to son, had him do a screen grab of
the DAS errors, and wrapped things up. He’s calling the stealership
tomorrow to get the car in for the SBC to be replaced under warranty.

He decided after many months of it sitting on the shelf to install the
glow plug controller to replace the one on the car that has failed. It’s
bolted to the bottom of the intake manifold and has to be removed from
below. He wasn’t able to get to the fasteners on the old one, so he
unplugged it, plugged in the new one and zip tied it to some components in
the general vicinity. Not ideal and certainly not what I would have done,
but you know, he’s a grown ass man so he can make his own decisions and
 suffer the consequences, if any.

So he fires the car up and it’s running much better. I would add that I
also replaced some really sketchy wiring on one of the injectors that
looked like it was the old self-destructing stuff. But - he get an alarm
in the dash saying that the battery is low and the battery monitor is
cutting off power to “convenience systems”. Whatever. It sort of freaked
me out a little, so we threw it back on the DAS to run another set of
diagnostics while we went inside and cooled off a bit (nearly 100F heat
 index here today.)

While inside, I did some research on this battery nanny to find that there
are two levels of alert based on how low the battery voltage gets. I
immediately figured it fired off because we had the car sitting on the DAS
with no charger on it for a good 45 minutes, after which he fires it up
with full glow plugs with the new controller, I’m sure. Dogged the battery
 down considerably, I’m sure.

So we look at the results of the diagnostics and find a bang in it about
low battery voltage. I’m sure that’s it.

He takes the car for a short spin and gets it again. Grrr.

I told him to take the car out for a decent drive. He does. Comes back,
battery nanny has retreated and no more alarms.

The W211s are nice cars, but sometimes they make a W123 look attractive.

2020-06-16 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
<< How this epidemic could be unfolding as it has under the CDC's nose in its

Yes!

What I saw was that the CDC accepted the authority and lead of the WHO, and the
WHO was in the pocket of the CCP. That was one of the problems.

A second problem is that the CDC had become politicized. A few years back some
in the CDC were agitating to get involved in research on firearms injuries.
Prioritizing an issue that has nothing to do with virology is an indication to
me that they were losing their direction, much in the same way that a mayor
concentrating on climate change may lose sight of controlling crime.

A third problem is the media reporting that makes it difficult to have good
data. Here I mean information and emphasis presented in the mainstream media. I
was watching carefully, and it looked to me like POTUS followed the advice of
Fauci and Birx quite closely, but that such advice was not always good advice.
But many reports in the media gave the impression that he did not.

Ultimately, the US response should not be measured against losses in war, but
against real-world results in other advanced countries. We should have done
better, but we were far from the worst.

Agreed about Iceland, in some sense. In general I am not a fan of such
comparisons, but actually their per capita international travel exposure is
far higher than ours. They had a lot of separate introductions of the
virus, and they were travelers from many countries. The useful bit of the
comparison is as a model of what a public health response should look like.
Let the health department solve communicable public health problems. For
more details of their experience, see:

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/06/08/how-iceland-beat-the-coronavirus

The problem with the CDC is that they were not allowed to play their normal
role in either the public facing side of this or in the response. They
normally tell the administration what to say, rather than vice versa. Had
they been in control the response would have been far more classic "ramp up
the testing". True they messed up testing assay selection in the beginning,
but they should have moved immediately to a back up plan for increasing the
testing and this was not done. We can speculate about why this failure to
increase testing occurred, but I would submit that it was not because a
bunch of people at the CDC who basically live for epidemic response
suddenly decided it was not necessary.

As mentioned, neither De Blasio nor Cuomo listened to the NYC health
department, who were telling them for over three weeks that they should be
closing schools etc. before NYC did so. Finally when deblasio agreed to
close schools, Cuomo stated he had no authority to do so because new jersey
and CT needed to be involved as well and only the state can coordinate
that. So they got into a pissing match after delaying longer than they
should have. The results were clear. The lesson should be: listen to your
technocrats and do what they tell you to do.

There will always be disagreements about why things happen but this is how
I see it. The CDC is world renowned or has been. It has played huge roles
in outbreak investigation and control around the world for decades. How
this epidemic could be unfolding as it has under the CDC's nose in its own
backyard is a huge black eye for the organization and I would argue for the
country. It is sad state of affairs. For whatever reason they have not been
able to lead a world-class response to something that is their bread and
butter.

Happy to contribute whatever I can in terms of practical steps.

Picked up my new glasses today. I’m not sure if I will be able to get used to
then or not. I picked them up then went on a 3 hour drive to where I will be
working for the week. When in the office I could see where the far, and close
up portion of the lens was but was a different animal in practical use. Would
see fine far off, but using the lower portion looking at dash board for example
caused it to be distorted. Looking at my phone from anything other that
straight on causes the shape or the phone to sort of distort. One big reason I
wanted to go with these is so I did not have to keep taking them off when
looking at my phone, or laptop etc. Seems I have to get my head in the right
spot. Reading my computer screen turning head side to side slightly causes
screen to distort or fish eye if that makes sense.

2020-06-06 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I had a Kaypro II with a daughterboard populated with a kajillion ram chips to
create a gigantic 1 MB ramdisk. IIRC I ran a replacement OS called ZCPR or some
such which allowed the ramdisk. I was using the machine as a word processor
with WordStar, and the spell check running on floppies would give me plenty of
time to have lunch. The ramdisk made a big difference.

Right! - 3.5" floppies were WAY cool. I still have a Panasonic laptop that
boots from a 3.5" floppy of the 720KB size. My first use of a computer was
a CP/M machine that a friend loaned me for few months while it was between
his customers. I later got a VIC 20 with the tape drive. That lasted a
little while, but then I bought an 8080 clone PC that had a CP/M daughter
board for programing and running multi slide projector shows. It was a dual
5.25" floppy machine. I next traded a Mamyaflex C220 outfit for a Seagate
ST225 (?) 20 MB hard drive that replaced one of the floppies. I had a buy a
new BIOS chip to use it. DOS 1.2, IIRC.
I moved up to am IBM luggable, still 8080, moved the AVL daughter board to
it, and could now present and program on site multi-image shows. I was big
time then - the only AVL programmer in the OKC area!
Sorry, I don't remember the years - but it started sometime in the '80's.

The scientific experiment would be to have a control group with no glove, code
the damage level to each group, then do a statistical analysis to determine
significance. My theory is that the gloved hands will show less damage.

Sometimes a scientific experiment is not required, like peeing on the electric
fence.

So, if you wear a rubber glove, put your hand into a container of nasty

that the gloves did not protect your hand?

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: RE: Chinese Red Death Flu

2020-06-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Shortly after getting my first progressive lenses I had my first issues: First,
I went on an amusement park ride with the kids. It involved spinning sideways,
and the visual effect left me a bit nauseous. The second was worse. We were
camping up in BC in our travel trailer, dodging forest fires as often happens
in the PNW. We had trouble finding a spot, and I shoehorned the trailer into a
short spot with the rear wheels right at the edge of the overhang of the RV
pad.

But I forgot the long step to the ground from the rear door, and misperceived
the depth because of the new lenses. I cut a walking stick and limped the rest
of the trip, and got some x-rays when we got back to civilization.

I’ve never encountered any issues with perception since I’ve been wearing them.
Not sure if that’s more likely if the correction is for distance rather than

Last night I spent some time on the heatwave BBS with my old TI99/4A. Its
pretty crazy connecting a 43 year old computer to a BBS that (at least
purportedly) running on a similar vintage computer. I played a couple door
games, good fun.
Today I created 6 VMs in Microsoft Azure for my students to connect to. I had
to modify my security group to allow each student's IP address and prevent
bad-guys from messing with me.
I'm finding the dichotomy of the two pretty interesting.
Also I've been asking students about their first computer. Considering most of
my students are my age or older I find it interesting that I'm in the minority
in that we had computers in the 1980s, (we got the TI in '83) most of my
students started with computers in the late 1990s...

Racism is alive and well, sadly. And we have an Administration that give a
wink and a nudge to extremists, who have decided that it's perfectly fine to go
nuts.

One thing we have going for us these days is that most people have cell phones
that can record decent quality video of significant duration. That is how we
now KNOW that oustiders are showing up at protests, smashing windows, setting
fires, and the slipping away to commit crimes (usually theft and arson, it
appears) while leaving the protestors to take the blame.

Won't work like it did in the past because they are getting filmed doing it.

Times are tough for a lot of people, and there are always sociopaths who will
cheerfully exploit widespread discontent to achieve their real ends, which are
chaos and societal disruption.

What is a good product to use to seal up some small pin holes/cuts in
the tin roof of my barn? I am thinking some sort of think tar like roof

heater vents in the shop so maybe the same product would work for both?

The fun is never-ending. Came down to the basement this morning to find
water covering the floor. Traced it back to the water heater. OK, it's
22 years old so not too surprising.

Picked up a replacement at Lowes. The plumbing in the house is all CPVC,
so I need to glue up a couple of new pieces to connect the new
heater. Problem is that being at the low point of the house, there's a
never-ending slow drip coming out of the cut-off end supply
line. Possibly the house main valve isn't making a complete seal. Anyway
I'm finding it impossible to keep the end of the pipe dry to apply the
cement.

I recall hearing about a trick of using bread to block a slow drip in a
copper pipe before sweating a joint together. Thinking that might work
just as well here. My other idea was toilet paper. It disintegrates when
wet so it should flush out cleanly once the water is back on, I would
think. Any other ideas?

There are 2 issues here. We all want hospitals to survive financially, but we

Suffice it to say this is all very complex and a ton of admin expense
results from the complexity.

Basically hospitals make all their money on outpatient surgery. My hospital
loses money on most medicare admissions, so an extra 20% on pneumonia
admissions isn't going to go very far when all outpatient surgery cases
were cancelled for two months and there are increased costs in material and
staffing for all hospitals during this outbreak. We do maybe 2000 spine
surgeries a year here. We have around a hundred covid patients on avg over
the past two months. There are lots of non medicare patients to whom
increased reimbursement would not apply. We see many unfunded homeless etc
patients and we try to get them emergency medi CAL but much of it the
hospital just eats. Any emergency funding for that population would be
appropriate when the hospital is losing so much money. I dont know how
many millions we are in the hole so far but it is not a good time to be a
hospital financially. How all the bailout funds will be allocated is above
my pay grade. Anesthesiologists and surgeons all took a major hit in the
wallet. Anybody in private practice has had a very challenging couple of
months with all elective care shut down and people avoiding coming in. We
are doing a lot of telemedicine visits which helps but is no substitute for
a lot of patients.

I would clean and rough up the metal thoroughly. Then rig a clamp or jigs
to hold the piece so that one of the broken off pieces can sit back in place
without aid. Then I'd mix a bit of JB-weld and dab it all along the break,
both edges. Then sit the broken piece on and let it cure. This will tack
the piece in place. Then do this for the other break. Once you have a single
intact part again you then begin reinforcing the breaks with wood, metal,
and glue according to your master plan. You MUST reinforce the repair,
the first gluing alone will be very weak.

Won't take too much time, but there will be a lot of idle time while glue
cures. You don't have to wait any longer than it takes to become firm,
except for once at the end to let everything get strong.

You get a lot more street cred for fixing something than for buying new.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Mask Debate $.02

2020-05-24 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Being a 75 year-old with history of heart disease and cancer, I have been
watching this closely, to include the analogies about hurricane fences to stop
mosquitoes, and "legal opinions" that it would be illegal to demand someone
wear a mask to enter a business.

Here's my take:

We can't trust any of the science at this point because there has been so much
misinformation, disinformation, and political bias affecting public information.

We should err on the side of safety.

Some cultures are mask-friendly. Having spent most of my work-life hanging
around international airports, I have seen people from Japan frequently using
masks during seasonal illnesses. I understand Taiwanese do also. The figures
from these countries indicate a probable benefit from wearing masks. It is
clear that these masks are unlikely to stop virus-sized particles, but the
"science" says that the virus must hitch a ride on a droplet. Even a couple of
cloth layers can stop a droplet. It would be nice if we had a CDC that would
spend most of their budget experimenting with stuff like this so we would have
real guidance instead of being told first to sanitize all incoming mail and
packages, then being told later..."Nevermind!". But they've been too busy
wanting to do studies to determine if firearms are dangerous.

On a humorous note, I am expecting a result like in The Andromeda Strain, where
the cure was found by discovering that the drunks were immune. There is some
evidence that tobacco smokers are less likely to contract the disease, and
Canadian researchers are finding some strains of MJ can kill the virus.

Warshed it this morning and went over the shopping village down the road
and took some piccies. It's in pretty nice shape for a 15yo car, 225k
mi, body very good except for the dent in the tailgate. One small patch
of clearcoat peeled on the hood, kinda weird why that happened, maybe
birdsh*t, and a few rock chips here and there. Right headlights are new,
the left is need in a polishing, hazed a bit.

Interior is excellent (needed a bit of a vac) although the headliner is
of course detached... Engine bay is clean although there is some grunge
on the engine under all that plastic, I will get at that with some
degreaser soon. I guess hitting it with the power sprayer is not the
best idea, all those electrons flowing around in there. Will need rear
tires sometime in the next year or so, the fronts are pretty new.

I need to get it up on the ramps soon and take a good lookie underneath,
oil needs to be changed (speakin a which, the leather manual case had a
really nice book for all the fluids and everything, looks like Mobil 1
0W40 is the preferred oil although a table in there showed a bunch of
other weights were also acceptable).

And actually minimizing risk is partially why most of us drive Mercedes. Peter
was in a crash that he was able to walk away from, because he minimized his
risks by driving a Mercedes. Wilton was in a very similar crash, and was able
to walk away because he was driving a Mercedes. Dr. Booth was drawn to Mercedes
because his wife was killed in a car accident. His research drew him to the
conclusion that Mercedes Benz automobiles were the safest autos on the road.

There. It's on topic now.

There's a company in CA that claims it has a 100% effective antibody, and is
ramping up a culture production. The procedure for culturing has been around
for nearly 20 years. They make GMO yeast to produce human antibodies. So it is
a preventive and a cure, but not a vaccine. I'm hoping for effective treatment,
a vaccine may never come.

My point is exactly that: many people (including me) want to minimize this
thing by thinking that all the people getting sick are somehow not like
them, but this is not the case. Statistically sure most young healthy
people are not going to die from it. But it still makes normal, otherwise
healthy, middle age people very sick in a way that influenza does not, over
a much longer interval measured in weeks rather than days. I am talking
about not being able to speak in full sentences for weeks, being short of
breath talking on the phone. Having pain in your lungs when you breathe.
For weeks.

I think the flu comparison article I posted speaks to this. Covid deaths
this year are multiples of influenza deaths even in a bad year.

Exercise is always good, as is eating right, not smoking and not being fat.

I am not trying to alarm anyone, or advocate for any particular response,
other than to rank it higher on the list of threats in your thinking than
the flu, take appropriate precautions, etc. Saying we are all going to get
it is rather defeatist when it is clearly possible to suppress to virtually
zero e.g. Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, S. Korea. I dont think any
of us want to give it to our parents or elderly friends. Wash hands, wear a
mask if you are close to vulnerable people for more than 30 minutes in a
poorly ventilated space, these are sensible precautions that don't cost
much. Maybe we will start to track it better so we dont end up shutting the
whole economy down.

Ok maybe I was silly to bring it up, especially for Euan in New Zealand
where they dont even have any of this disease.

Maybe the meth jokes arent so bad after all.

As you were.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Political, Whodunit?

2020-05-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Well, since K'leb has authorized politics, I might as well give y'all some
breaking news.

former pres. Obama and former AG Lynch likely dunit.

Here's how we now know (H/T to Dan Bongino):

Flynn's conversation took place on 12/29/2016

The WH meeting took place on 01/05/2017

The leak occurred on 01/06/2017

There are 3 "legal" ways to have intercepted the call and gotten Flynn's name:

1- Criminal warrant, not likely

2- FISA warrant, no record

3- Unmasked by request, no record in that time frame. They were discussing this
by the end of December

But there's another way: 50 USC 1802 allows POTUS to order the surveillance in
lieu of obtaining a FISA warrant at the request of the AG if the AG certifies
that no US Citizen is likely to be incidentally captured.

Lookin' like that's exactly what happened, and will explain why BHO looked so
nervous when he accused AG Barr of "hurting the rule of law".

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT Rx Glasses with progressive lenses

2020-05-14 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I have done both zenni and Costco. When I first got mine at Costco about 30
years ago, they said they would always re-lens their frames. I bought titanium
frames then, and Berylium-Copper memory bendy ones the next time.

Since then, I have had them re-lensed many times, except for the last time when
they spotted some superficial verdegris on the metal where the black finish had
worn off. Ahah! They pointed, and I could no longer browbeat them on the
30-year old guarantee. Perhaps a weakness on my part to give in so easily.

So, off to Zenni with the Berylium-Copper frames and my Costco prescription.
They were ok.

It is really going downhill and if this continues we will fade away.

I am tired of reading about how people think that anyone offering an old

There is very little point in posting all of these ads for cars that we

If you want to advise us of a car for sale, just tell us about it and

We can form our own opinions on the subject.

Let us get back to the real original intention of this list.

In my younger and even foolisher days I wanted to see how quick I could make

My response to the cop was, empty road, clear and dry, vehicle up to safely
handle. He said, "yeah you're doing fine, I've been following for a while.
Follow me, I'm on my way to an accident scene."

He made me wait 'til he finished his paperwork, then gave me a ticket for

Here's a picture of my new 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec SUV. Color is palladium
silver with a light beige interior. Has lots of bells and whistles including
keyless go ignition. Very nimble and so quiet you can barely tell it's a
diesel. Still figuring out all the bells and whistles (navigation, COMAND
system, bluetooth connectivity, etc.). I got a pretty good deal since it has
been driven 135k miles and is out of warranty.

It does make me wonder why the chinese students who lived across the street in

0 buckshot for reloading 10ga or 3.5" 12ga?
Put it up on eBay as slingshot ammo?
Put it on Gunbroker as muzzle loader round ball?

Subject: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** GLK350 "Intake Manifold" Code?

Anyone have a clue?

DIL had to bring the 2010 GLK350 to the dock in HNL for shipment stateside
because my boy is PCS from his USCG cutter in HNL to a small boat station in
Warrenton, OR. But she gets a code when starting up, and Uncle will not accept
a vehicle with code for shipment. So she takes it to the stealer.

Stealer informs her that the code is for the intake manifold, clears it, and
the car is now enroute. She is worried that it will be a problem to drive from
Seattle POE to my indie in Portland.

I recall something about carbon clogging intake manifolds, but I think that was
for diesel Jettas.

Do any of you have an idea what would cause that code, and what the cure would
be?

TIA,

Greg

Turkey eggs are like very large chicken eggs. Goose eggs
are like very large duck eggs; both are much 'heavier' and
rubberier than their pointy-beaked cousins'. My family have
raised (and eaten) all four.

Re: [MBZ] OT guns on sale too! now cooking your goose

2020-04-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
In general, game is much leaner than agribiz raised meat. This requires
different cooking techniques to even be edible. If it can be prepared rare,
like venison or wood duck, it will be tender and delicious. Otherwise, a wet
cooking is better. Venison sausage requires plenty of pork fat. Chili made with
venison is great.

My FIL would go goose hunting every winter on the Eastern Shore and
bring some of them back. His suggestion was to marinate them in red
wine and some other stuff for a coupla days then roast them like a
turkey but not too well done. They were tough and did not have much
flavor, and yes it was like a cheap cut of beef, plus you had to be
careful not to crunch a tooth on the shot pellets. He thought it was
great, mostly I guess because he shot them and put them on the table,
everyone else just humored him. Even the dog wouldn't eat it...

It might be good in a sausage though, never thought of that. It was not
too gamey, maybe the marinating helped that, so the flavor wasn't bad.
It would be interesting to put one on the smoke for 8hr or so.
