Re: [MBZ] Cheap Chinese lifts

2021-06-09 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
The 12' ceiling really held me up for a while until I had an experienced
installer come and look at my space. Some lifts require that height for
the columns, but the Mohawk I have has shorter columns with overhead
hydraulic lines that are adjustable. I have 10.5' ceilings and can raise
any car (I've had quite a few, as heavy and large as a long W140) full
standing height, maximum height of the lift. I can store a vehicle under
if needed, as I did a few times this year during winter storms. A truck or
tall vehicle would be an issue, but I don't own any of those.

I paid $8k installed for a 7k asymmetrical Mohawk. No regrets at all. The
7k isn't available anymore and their next smallest lift is quite a bit more
expensive unfortunately.

Allan,
Trial and error and some common sense!

I have a Mohawk asymmetrical lift and a balanced load isn't always obvious
due to the angle of the columns. But you can determine if you're heavy in
one direction or the other based on the load felt on some of the rollers.

Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed

2021-05-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Hi John,
It’s not terribly difficult can you definitely need the car raised up a bit
to get under it. It’s something that’s pretty straightforward on a lift,
so any competent shop should be able to do it if your not up for it. Just
be sure genuine MB parts are used. Lots of shops cut corners and use
little pieces of fuel hose, etc instead of waiting for the correct parts.

The bushings in the shifter itself can be done from inside the car, but not
the ones are the shift rods which are most important

Good luck,
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter

2021-05-10 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
HI John,
Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of
them, so 6 bushings) are probably gone. This causes the levers on the
shifter to end up in odd places and occasionally jam. There are also
bushing in the shifter itself that can contribute to the problem. Best
action is to order up all the bushings from the classic center and spend a
weekend rebuilding everything. You'll be surprised by how nice it can all
be when repaired properly.

Good luck
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] Bucket loader?

2021-04-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Beware of JD tractors. My brother blew up the engine in his mid sized
tractor by laying it on its side. Dealer could only replace the engine as
a unit for $10k or so. Crazy money. You can’t buy pistons, or other major
engine parts. Can’t rebuild it. They have market locked up tight for
service. If the tractor needs major work you’re screwed.

Get a Kubota.

Re: [MBZ] Bucket loader?

2021-04-11 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Gravel and rocks are really heavy... I have a Kubota BX2730 with a loader.
I think its rated to pick up 800lbs. Tractor is about 1400 lbs, add in the
deck, loader, and a 400lbs scraper on the rear (for counter weight) and its
over 2000 lbs. It can pick up a load of gravel, but you can feel its
pushing its limits. A false move and it'll roll over. When moving around
big rocks, I can't fill the bucket... too many and it won't lift.

It does work well to spread gravel, but can't dig and skim off top soil.
You need a back hoe for that I think.

You're probably better off renting a machine.

Grey market only, so the MPH speedo isn't original (and is really wrong for
this year of 107) in this car. Interior is poorly redone also.

Re: [MBZ] On the Subject of Early MB Slushbox Shifters...

2021-03-06 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Before 1968 or so, there was no standard in automatic shifters. This
resulted in people getting run over because drivers were unfamiliar with
all the various types of automatic shifters, especially in situations like
valet parking where someone may drive many types of cars in a short period
of time. The shifter design was later standardized for all vehicles sold
in the US to avoid this.

This is covered in details in Nader's Unsafe at any speed. Quite an
interesting read.

We've gone away from this again with modern cars (2007 S class being one of
the first) but there are many mechanisms in the car to prevent them from
unexpectedly staying in gear and is regulated by FMVSS.

Re: [MBZ] wood stoves

2021-02-17 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I'm not aware of any additional insurance increases, although we have two
fireplaces already, so I'm sure thats built into the premium. The wood
burning insert is installed in one of the fireplaces. Its a
masonry chimney in the center of the house with a stainless liner for the
insert. Overall seems quite safer than an open traditional fireplace. The
added chimney liner is an additional level of protection from a chimney
fire causing any significant damage, and the insert is burned with the door
closed and doesn't need much attention.

Fireplaces in general are quite common here in NJ. Its rare to see a house
without one, and I wouldn't buy a house without one!

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
We have a Jotul wood insert which is outstanding. Its been cold, under
freezing for a few days for the most part. I heat with my minisplits and
the wood insert, but the large 3 zone split stopped working earlier this
week. This meant we were running with one 12k split on one end of the
house and the wood stove. Still managed to keep the living room in the low
70s. It would fall into the 60s overnight after the insert started to burn
low.

The failure of the Fujitsu was interesting... I self installed, so assumed
no warranty. Initially the failure showed on the indoor units as no
communication to the outdoor. The outdoor unit showed no power to the main
board, but was supplying power to the indoor units. I found a blown fuse
on one power supply board, soldered on. I ordered a new fuse from
McMaster, checked the obvious places I could for a short, then soldered it
in when it arrived. The unit powered up then, but wouldn't heat and gave a
code for the outdoor unit fan after a while, which wasn't spinning. More
testing showed 400V DC (!) to the fan connector and open circuit on the fan
motor. I ordered up a new fan and installed it yesterday and all is good
now.

Cost me about $300 to fix. If I did it by the service manual, I would have
had to replace the power supply board, the main control board, and the
fan. Probably would have been a $2000 repair if I called someone.

But its a nice reminder how powerful the Jotul insert is. Worst case, I
can run the oil fired steam heat still, but it generally costs a fortune.

2021-02-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
There are different styles... I forget exactly what the 117 tensioner looks
like at this second. 617 tensiors ratchet. I've got a M100/130/180
tensioner on my desk here thats hydraulic only. They suck in oil from a
little pool they sit it and build tension from movement of the chain.

Re: [MBZ] M117 chain tensioner priming

2021-02-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Best thing to do is crank the engine without letting it start to build oil
pressure. You can just pull the wire off the coil. Many mechanics do this
when changing the oil so the engine doesn’t run without pressure to the
tensioner.

Even better, remove the plugs also and crank it. The engine will spin
quickly with the starter and build oil pressure quickly.

Re: [MBZ] 240D linkage parts

2021-01-26 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
There are at least three versions of the linkage on the 240D, and some of
it is NLA. My 80 has the version with a level on the valve cover that has
an integrated piece of rubber (which was later moved to the firewall).
That piece is NLA, and mine is starting to tear. Might have to enlist the
3D printer in a repair.

Its a shame the 63 is the solid one. Those early cars with their funky
single circuit disc brakes don't really give me much confidence. So many
improvements in the car overall by 1967.

But, being solid is far more important. I don't think the slight swap is a
big deal, shouldn't be significant wiring changes.

I agree with the others... keep the transmissions were they are. Someone
in eastern europe will buy that 250SE!

they’re not fast, they should easily get up to highway speed to the point

As mentioned, it's the rheostat. You can wiggle it back and forth
carefully for several minutes and you might get lucky and get the lights to
come on a bit. The real fix is to take it apart and clean the contacts
well. If the resistive coil inside has come out of its place in the
ceramic body, then there isn't much hope to fit it.

Good news is they're available new from Mercedes again. I just bought one.

Re: [MBZ] Serious question that does not need to turn into a political baby fest

2021-01-21 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I hate to get involved in these conversations but consider this:

Perhaps what you're seeing is actually designed to increase division
between left and right by reinforcing their preconceived notion people
already have as the "enemy" on the other side. Remember that social media
runs on extremes, conflict, click bait, and extreme ideas. People then
feed on this, share it, reinforce the idea and it spreads like wildfire.
Algorithms make sure you keep seeing the same ideas, not new ones that may
offer a conflicting message. Promoting the idea that "everyone is getting
along, things are getting better" doesn't make much money.

Generally accepted now that there is significant foreign influence in
creating these divisive posts. Lots of it doesn't originate in the US.
Think about that for a moment!

If you haven't seen anything positive on Biden in the last 24 hours, then
you really need to reconsider your sources. I'm not talking about whether
you like what he did or not, I'm saying that the news has been flooded with
what he's been up to as president. He, like any other president from any
party, is quite busy his first day in office.

It saddens me to see people I've known for a long time take on extreme
positions. I believe most people are moderate in their political views by
nature, and we have a huge amount we agree on as Americans. But the
current situation with social media and media in general is ensuring that
we forget that and turn against our friends and family.

Re: [MBZ] 123 Tires and OT Truck Tire Questions

2021-01-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I run 195/70R14 Michelin Defenders on all my W123s, and all my other 14"
cars for that matter. The original size is 175R14 on a 240D, which is much
taller than 175/70R14. 195 70 14 is quite close and fits well. Plus,
they're actually good tires. Not so many good choices in that size anymore.

I agree with Kaleb, you’re all over thinking this. Just crank with your
foot half on the accelerator until it starts. If your battery or starter
dies doing this, it was already going to fail.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-09 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
7 years ago I purchased a new Stihl chain saw. I've used it maybe once a
year since for storm clean up, etc. I use ethanol fuel in it, I don't
drain the fuel between uses. In other words, I don't go out of my way to
keep it running. But I always mix stabilizer in with the fuel, and only
use the Stihl 2 stroke oil with it (which also has stabilizers I believe)

It starts and runs perfectly every time I use it. No issues at all.
They've really figured out the occasional-use small engine. I highly
recommend them.

Re: [MBZ] The lack of evidence lockdowns actually worked is a world scandal

2020-07-07 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
We lived in fear of leaving the house here in NJ and look at our numbers
and the rest of the New York Cory area... lock down has been very
successful. Saying otherwise is ignoring scientifically proven facts for
political agenda. If we have a chance of fighting this, we all need to
change our behaviors and learn to respect the science behind the
recommendations.

If you don’t wear a mask, you shouldn’t be out in public around other
people, period. And the federal government needs to step up and make this
statement.

I honestly can’t believe this is even a point to argue and discuss... you
guys are very clouded by what you read and hear with strong political
bias. Forget all the noise and just get back to the basic fact that this
is a respiratory disease people die from. And wearing a mask and avoid
others reduces its spread. It’s very simple.

Lots of savings to buy a proper refrigerant scale to use it.

2020-06-06 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Its hard to find the Beru wire sets... if you just look at the listings by
model and category, they don't appear. But if you search for the Beru
number, lots of places actually carry them.

Karlyn are garbage... the wire pulls out from the end too easily.

Only wires worth running a 560 are Beru Q4150028:

Just catching up on this... beware that the M110 isn't like a diesel engine
in a W123. Theres lots of emissions control stuff, idle air control, etc.
Its all expensive and difficult to work on, since its all under the intake
manifold. I'm just finishing up some major work on a 84 280SL which came
in running poorly and idling at 2000rpm. All the rubber hoses under the
intake manifold were bad, among other things. Car is back together now,
but it was 10+ hours to R the manifold and do everything correctly.

Some 116 and 107 rotors with a 116 part number are NLA from Mercedes. Just
got a set of Ate for a car, still available.

Re: [MBZ] OT: C-41 process film/scan services

2020-03-20 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I used to do quite a bit of film work at home, including C41 and E6
development. C41 is very simple to do at home, even easier than black and
white in some ways, since its completely standardized and little you can do
to vary the output.

Lots of kits are available:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/For-Color-Film/ci/595/N/4288586380

The biggest challenge with C41 is most processes require temperature
control at 100F. This means you need a good way to control temperature...
a sous vide might do the trick these days. Or look for a use Jobo film
processor, I have a few of them.

Then you need to scan, which isn't as easy as it seems. Color accuracy is
difficult and varies by film brand.

Heres a frame from one of the last rolls I shot:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/41987615885/in/dateposted-public/

Most of the photos on flickr were taken on film. I haven't had much time
for it lately.

Dwanyes does a decent job, but also scratches negatives a lot. Their
quality is very hit and miss.

Good luck,
Jaime

I think there’s something special about these plain janes cars. Simple,
nothing to do but enjoy the suspension, interior quality, feeling of the
gearshift, sound of the engine... and enjoy the idea of a simple, slow, low
option car built with exceptional quality that can continue running for 50
years that will never be made again by any manufacturer.

If you want power windows go buy a hyundai!

Easily worth $10k.

I actually brokered the sale of this car from the owner to the guy flipping
it. We ended up getting much more for it than the owner though it was
worth. It'll be interesting to see how much more was left it in. I figured
it would end up in Europe somewhere for restoration.

I will say, it cleaned up nicely. Haha.

Re: [MBZ] Green/green 1993 Mercedes Benz 300Diesel - $3200

2020-01-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I’d be all over this if it was local. The car is well optioned, not just
green/green, but I also spy orthopedic seats. I wonder if it has ASD also.

As you all probably know by now, I find much more value in these cars than
just the price paid. I’ve also found that if you treat cars based on their
value as whole (usage, ownership experience, cost of compatible
transportation, etc) the value of the cars does go up significantly. I
typically buy cars on the lower end, although my definition of lower end
may be different than most people on the list. But I’ve managed to sell my
last few daily drivers for 2-3x times what I paid for them after ownership
for 2-3 years and 20-30k miles. This was a 350SDL and two 123 diesels. I
did put a lot into each car, but in the end I usually come out roughly
breaking even. This 124 could easily be one of those cars.

My 140 is a different story... I’d probably get what I bought it for, but
140 market is quite different. Its too difficult/expensive to make a car
with needs into a good one. I’d like to get into another 126, or a 124 or
even 123 again for daily use. Just waiting for the right one to come
around. If this green/green car was closer, it would be it.

Re: [MBZ] 124 lower control arm, rear

You’re best off just getting the whole arm from MB. They’re cheap and come
with the inner bushing already.

You have the outer pivot bushing? That one seems to wear out the most and
needs special tools to get in and out easily.

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-08 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I had a discussion with my alignment guy last week about this topic. Hes
been at it almost 40 years and specializes in european cars. He confirmed
that the the links can be torqued down without the spring installed. Its
important that the axle is horizontal, as stated in the workshop manual (it
doesn't state the weight of the car should be on the suspension for most of
the links). The critical point is to have the bushing held in a position
where they will not be under tension when the car is sitting on its
wheels. How you achieve this (with/without spring, vehicle on the ground,
subframe out of the car, etc) isn't important.

After the 4 links are done and installed in the car, you can install the
spring and spring link, then support the car with a floor jack or the wheel
on blocks to bring the suspension to the correct position to torque down
the spring link. Then install the sway bar and shock, as these will work
against you if you install them first.

Good luck,
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] 124 RF LCA???

The comparison on price is against Lemforder, which come out to about $155
each. The genuine parts, with 25-30% off list you can get through many
dealers, come out to $175-$185.

I didn't find the TRWs until recently. I'd give them a shot.

Moog means nothing to me in terms of Mercedes OEMs... probably reboxed
stuff. Might even be TRW, take a close look at what you get.

Here is what Taiwanese Lemforder parts look like, which I refused to use:

Yes, this is true... its likely the center support, not the bearing
itself. Its a good idea to replace the flex disc as well. Both can look
fine visually and cause issues with vibration.

Re: [MBZ] MB Engine Transplants?

2019-11-19 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
There is a company in Scandinavia that has kits for marinzing for Mercedes
diesels. Its not too uncommon to see 602s as marine engines in Europe.
But they're fairly low output compared to any engine we'd find here in the
states in most boats. Its hard to compete with a Mercuriser V8 in terms of
horsepower. And boats like trawlers that have lower horsepower needs are
better served by large slow turning engines that last forever, like Ford
Lehman diesels.

I too would like to retrofit a MB diesel into a boat, having been around
boats for most of my life. But finding a combination of boat and engine
that makes is difficult. As Dan said, the exhaust is a major issue.
Building one yourself isn't simple... its pretty easy for the engine to
swallow up sea water when conditions are not perfect.

Motor mounts make sense... fan hitting the fan shroud when the engine
shifts in a turn. Inspect the fan and see if its close to the shroud at
