IIRC the lighter sockets of the W114/W115, like old American iron, are fairly deep when compared to the newer cars like R107+. The lighter socket hardware, like seat belts, are 100% American in origin, but have been drifting. The _power_ sockets, though, I believe retain the original depth.

With bright headlights it indicates that the bad connection MUST be on the starter end, if that's what is wrong. Not at the battery. Or the starter itself is going out. Which gear for push-starting depends on how many gears you have, and how fast you can get it going before you pop the clutch.
