Even my W115 200D would maintain 85mph floored on the flats. Eventually. If your 240D can't do that, it's not dialed in right. The Albatross (240D) had real problems at first, but that's because somebody dicked with the throttle linkages to the point where it would not reach full throttle.

The capacitor problem is/was a _vendor_ issue. The caps themselves should have lasted much, much longer than they did. In particular, the ones Apple was getting would leak, and the juices would erode the fine traces of that era away, resulting in permanent death. -- Jim

Even 6-12mo slush fund wouldn't have worked for me. Without a mortgage (or rent), though, even a fairly modest fund can stretch out well. IIRC, the two biggest expenses are mortgage, followed by health insurance premiums. Those keep draining funds at a fixed (and high) rate no matter what.

We did this when replacing the delivery valve seals on son's W201. You can remove the glow plugs if you want to relieve the stress on the starter whilst cranking to get fuel out of the cracked injectors before buttoning everything up for a real start attempt. -- Jim
