_So_ different than eastern WA. Swamp coolers are highly
effective here, it's generally quite dry. Dry enough that I've
considered having our clothes dryer vent into the basement
in order to conserve the heat and moisture! (Would need a
lint trap, though. Big bag made of sheets?) When I do laundry
I just hang it on a line inside the house, in winter. Dries fine,
though denim is stiff (which I like). My wife hates that, and
always uses the dryer.

I gave up on the whole-house humidifier, I just couldn't keep
that thing running. (An in-duct boiler, with tank and float valve.)

The real problem is the expansion valve. You can't really flush

My whole-house (?) 26kW (when wired zig-zag) Hercules-powered Kohler would run
for just
about six days, no load, on a similar tank. It's really a 45kW 3-phase genny.
I think of it as
that Chris Farley SNL character, in drag: "I'm HUNGRY" Scary hungry...

Only a tank that big could be remotely useful for an automatic system, and
nothing (else) here
is gas powered. (NG is not available.) Lotta expense and bother for
relatively little benefit.

So, for us, it runs off 10G forklift tanks. We fire it up after a few days of
rope-pull generator service,
when it's time for hot water and showers. Hook up a tank, start the genny and
the clock. About
three hours of 'normal living' while you get everything done, then the lights
go out again. It's a treat!

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-30 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
There's a lot of thermal mass in a battery. Could still be warm from
the charging, plus slight heating from the draw-down.

What is 'tests good'? That covers a lot of ground, all the way from
"has two terminals and isn't gushing through a hole in the side", to
brand new.

There are six cells, any one of which could be sub-optimal and thus
rendering the battery _not_ good. Increased series resistance; reduced
plate capacity, due to erosion or a break in the plate structure; electrical
leakage;
poisoned cell chemistry...

'Tests good'? All of those, and more, times six...

To test a battery thoroughly requires access to the individual cell terminals,
and the electrolyte, of each of the six cells. And even that won't tell you
much
about electrical leakage, though you can infer that from reduced voltage and
capacity when compared to other, known good, cells, starting from a known
state of charge.

In most cases, 'tests good' is about as reliable as "idiot light is not on."
My wife's SL's battery 'tested good', meaning started the car without problems,
until the time it exploded when she hit the key!

A _thorough_ test for most consumer goods probably costs more than just
purchasing a new whatsis. Only done in laboratories, usually in-house at
the manufacturers'. The rest of the time we just rely on quick/cheap litmus
tests. If it 'tests' good, but is still acting up, we just replace it and move
on.

Run your weak battery flat. Maybe several times. If there's a weak cell the
rest of the battery will attempt to reverse-charge it once the terminal voltage
goes below 10V. That'll do it in in short order, car batteries don't have
internal
BMS for self-protection like laptop batteries do.

Yep, we had some customers that turned on the debug logging features, to '11',
and
left them on. Took out the onboard flash in about a year. Not too cool,
losing six-figure
network backbone systems to that. The stupid logs slowed it way down, too.
Nobody
ever figured someone would do that. But the 'hard disk' mentality takes time
to go away.

Hard disks basically don't wear out, they fail suddenly. But until they do,
they perform
as if new. Not, not, NOT true of flash-based devices:

If only. The wear-out characteristics of most flash devices is NOT something
they advertise, and on lower-cost stuff it isn't even known. (To you.)

With bright headlights it indicates that the bad connection MUST be
on the starter end, if that's what is wrong. Not at the battery.
Or the starter itself is going out.

Which gear for push-starting depends on how many gears you have,
and how fast you can get it going before you pop the clutch. Traditionally,
on a 3-speed, you use second. On a 4-5 speed maybe third might be
a bit better. First is never the right choice, it just skids, which SUCKS if
you got up the speed via muscle power!

The handle should be able to slip a bit with a loosened grip. There should be
a swell
at the end to keep it from getting away from you. I can't describe it exactly,
but there's
a position change on the handle, by one hand at least, during the swing. A
smooth
wooden handle, correctly designed, is a joy to use.

Part of proper technique is ALWAYS acting like the target might 'poof'
disappear on you,
and so your hand ending position should always be such that when pivoting from
there
the head CAN'T hit you. Hands a bit lower and well forward from what is
probably most
comfortable.

Comfortable, at least, until you lose some toes.

Re: [MBZ] Battery Fun

2022-03-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> switching the battery "off" removes it from all current draws

Once upon a time you didn't need such things. My Falcon, for example,
lacking a clock and having the old relay-style generator voltage regulator,
has ZERO parasitic current draw when sitting. (Make sure the battery top
is clean, that's the worst leak point there.)

Alternators, for example, rely upon the quality of the reversed junctions
in the rectifiers to keep from sucking the battery down when not generating.
Minuscule leakage, generally, but not zero. Throw a clock, or a computer
into the mix and you pretty much MUST have a disconnect then.

I've been putting those screw-down disconnects in the ground leads on
our stored cars. The rated current is inadequate, but that's because they
have an insulator and run all the current through the screw. If you peel it
off they make full face contact, increasing the current capacity, but it does
mean you have to remove the screw fully and separate the halves to cut
off. Hence doing it in the ground side, where the 'free-balling' halves can't
get into too much trouble while disconnected.

2022-03-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Were it me, I'd put a standard 220V welder socket in the garage (or wherever),
Buy the mating plug, and a suitable length of cable, and replace the cord
on the welder with it. Buy a second socket and a drop box, and use the
welder's original cable to make a 110->220 adapter, so you can continue
to use the welder on a 110V outlet. Done, and safe. Any other 220V appliance
you fed 110V this way would be underwhelmed perhaps, but unlikely to die or
start a fire. (Completely the opposite of what their adapter can do.)

(And, if you were to ever come up with a Miller or other _nice_ welder,
you have a place to plug it in already.)

Alternately, just ignore 220V and enjoy your welder as-is.

I would bury that start-a-fire adapter that came with the welder somewhere
it would never see the light of day again. Perhaps destroy it first, then send
it to the recycler's. WORST IDEA EVER!

I put a 220V outlet in the barn, as a kid. It was for the hay elevator. It was
a standard outlet, as a standard plug was what was on the elevator, and we
used a standard extension cord to feed it. I re-strapped the motor to 220V,
as we were plagued by the inability to feed it enough current on 110V. (That
really perked the old girl up.) To avoid tragedy, this outlet was on a ceiling
joist,
overhead, and had "220V" painted on the plate. Hard to reach. Best I could
do, without incurring a significant expense for all-new 220V stuff. No
tragedies yet, in the 40+ years since.

2022-03-19 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> I guess the worst thing is it will just trip a breaker.

The worst thing is that it will start a fire, and not out on the flamey end.
Though this is unlikely.

I REALLY don't like the games they're clearly playing with the input cord.
Also, their labeled specs are pretty crappy/confusing. On the back,
IF I interpret correctly, it says that 110V Imax is 43A, but it says that Ieff
(effective, i.e. RMS) is only 33A. Heating is the problem with overcurrent,
and heating is driven by RMS current, not peak.

So, so long as the wire in their firestarter cabling is good for 30A (RMS) then
it won't catch on fire. You will be hard-pressed, though, to find any
standard-looking
outlet that will give you more than 20A before its breaker pops. And you will
be
hard pressed to find any standard-looking outlet that is capable of delivering
50%
more current (30A) through its blade contacts without causing problems, even
if it was wired and fused for 30A. (10ga wiring, 30A breaker. DO NOT DO
THIS) There's a reason that those high-current plugs have such big pins.
So, there's no way this would work well at high loads for very long.
The input wiring is simply not up to the task.

You, and indeed likely most of their customers, will probably not be riding it
so hard
as to cause input feed problems, and so it'll probably work fine. This is
China, Inc.,
and they simply don't care about a few fires that might come of this. At the
first sign
of trouble they'd simply change the paint color and the name on it, and soldier
on.

All of these objections would go away if they'd simply put a real 220V cord on
it,
with the correct 30A (50A?) plug. It could be used on 110V, but one should
expect
the 20A breaker to pop if you run it too hard for too long.

Vintage matters, the older ones are a lot more solidly constructed,
and easier to repair. The circuit is actually quite simple, usually a
timer, a few safety switches, and a magnetron tube circuit. My
Amana has blown the fuse a couple of times in the 30 years I've
been using it.

So, a pound of uranium would run my house for how long?
At about 20,000 kWH/lb I could run my house at full feed load,
electric furnace turned to '11', doors left open, my wife in charge
of the lights, and everything else turned on too, for 16 days.

Should be able to stretch it to a month, easy, under normal
use patterns. (Perhaps three.) I'd be OK with an $8/month
power bill. With any reasonable co-generation implementation,
the waste heat would be used in the home, and that $8 could
perhaps easily stretch to a year.

Of course, uranium has gone up, apparently rather a lot recently.
(It was $11/lb in 2003, and $100/lb in 2007.) Even so, still sounds
pretty affordable.

Now, if only there was a "Mr. Fission" desktop reactor...

The US Govt is sitting on some billion (!) pounds of
uranium, in the form of depleted UF6. Only needs Mr. Fission
and some slight enrichment in order to be ready to go!

Every time I look at our two '9x Dodge pickups I'm continually impressed by
their appearance.
They look capable, yet understated. Clean lines. Nothing newer looks as good,
IMHO. The
Cummins and the V10 are more than capable of doing any pulling I need, and both
engines
have excellent longevity reputations. I foresee no reason to _ever_ replace
them.

The neighbor has one, too. We just used his tailgate yesterday as a worktable
upon which to resurrect
my Hobart 135 wire-feed welder, the loaner. (He'd borrowed it and broken it.)
Mine's working again,
and we started in on his broken $50 Hobart, same model. (He bought it for
parts, to fix mine, but I
think we can get them both working. I'm handy that way.)

The neighbor's truck was getting pretty beat up, what with its heavy use,
getting sideswiped by
some dolt, and rolled onto its side by his son. Rather than replace it he
opted to replace the bed,
have the necessary body work done, and repaint. It looks good, but not 'too
good to use'. Costs
mostly covered by the dolt's insurance, along with careful shopping. (Used bed
and door off
Craigslist, etc.)

Memo to dolts everywhere: the blind S-curves on a rural road are NOT the place
to be
checking your texts while driving...

_All_ we did was double up the attic blown-in insulation. Made a very
noticeable difference. We use wood auxiliary heat, maybe 5 cords a year.
I've never paid a dime for any of it. Free downed trees, or I cut off of our
acreage in a pinch.

I dislike sealed multipane windows, they're all ticking time bomb$. For a
brief time you could get NON-sealed 2-pane windows. They never fail.
Ours are Pella, but I was told, perhaps by somebody who doesn't really
know, that this was no longer possible. There was only a percent or three
difference on the energy efficiency, but they're 'forever' windows.

You can't begin to imagine how much I loathe the 'subscription model' that
seems to be everywhere now. Even for windows...

While the second law of thermodynamics is inviolate, the point of this
was not to make _energy_. It is to make _fuel_ out of waste products, and
requires a significant input of solar energy. In this case it's a solar energy
endeavor, but with convenient supplies of heat and food for the bugs,
presumably multiplying the efficiency somewhat.

Think "breeder reactor", rather than "perpetual motion machine."

Even so, I don't know how it pencils out.

That's why professional mechanics have those spendy big toolchests.
They lock, fairly securely, and the sheet metal's too thick to peel easily.
They're heavy, and fairly difficult to transport. (My brother hires a rollback

In rather than out is safer, in general, because you can't block somebody in
just by putting something big in front of the door. So, that's code for
residences.
With the extenuating circumstances of potential _crowds_, subject to panic and
in
sufficient quantities to roll against an un-blocked inward-opening door turning
the
door itself into a block, the code is reversed for public spaces.
