Re: [MBZ] 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 - 117k miles - $22,000

2022-05-05 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The fact that the current owner is dumping it so soon after purchase is a huge
red flag. Miles aren’t too high, but the price should reflect the many minor
things that may be more major than the seller is leading on, or they should be
fixed.

Re: [MBZ] Truth On Repairability

2022-04-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
A month ago, we bought a new minivan, a 2022 Toyota Sienna. It has many
subscription based features. There’s a handy Toyota app that allows you to stop
and start your engine, lock and unlock the doors and a few other things. It’s
free for the first year, but $9.00 per month after that. That van has the most
uncomfortable seats. It does get 35mpg combined since it’s a hybrid. After
three weeks, this wasn’t enough to offset the discomfort, so it found its way
to a new owner, paid off the loan, and the 2008 Odyssey with over 164K miles is
going to stay around. The current generation Odyssey vans have a host of
recalls and issues, so we decided to get our deposit back and put some money
into the 2008. It needs some new rubber seals/weatherstrip to fix some water
leaks, it has some front suspension clunks, and it’s going to need
engine/transmission mounts soon. Compared to the new vans, it’s easier to get
into, more comfortable, has better air conditioning, and, best of all, NO CAR
PAYMENT!

she should unload it while the used car market is high, and convertible season

Re: [MBZ] Anybody want this fine automobile?

2021-12-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
This is the first time hearing the sound of an OM606 Diesel engine!! It seems
pretty smooth and quiet! I like the look (feel) of the W210 chassis. One of
those would be nice to cruise around here in NC! It wouldn’t be just putting
around town since we live in the country. A Diesel would get to hwy speeds
since everything is at least 8 miles away. I’m going to have to search for
another Mercedes Diesel.Kevin in Lexington, NC

[MBZ] Jingle Bells Mercedes Diesel Style

2021-11-29 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I thought it was time to bring this out again since I just found it again. I
originally wrote this up in 2012. Jingle Bells Diesel Mercedes Style
Jingle bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D, HEE!!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, Vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in an old 240D.

Sliding through the snow,
In my old 240D,
Over the streets we go,
people pass with ease.

The seat belt buzzer rings,
But I know we're buckled tight,
If we get through this Christmas snow storm, We'll make it home tonight!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, vacuum sprung a leak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, Hee!

Jingle bells, diesel smells, vacuum pump is weak,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D.

On and on we go,
In My old 240D,
What's that in the road,
Up ahead I see?

Piled up behind a truck,
Are all those passing cars,
As I creep by in the left hand lane, I thank my lucky STAR!!

Oh!

Jingle Bells, Diesel smells, driving is a breeze,
Oh what fun it is to ride in this old 240D, HEE!

Jingle bells, Diesel smells, Oh what's that noise I hear,
We've finally made it home now, so let's go have a beer!

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes

After taking the cross country trip from Oregon to North Carolina, I now
understand why many RVers choose to stay in hotels on the road. It’s not worth
the time to set up every night just to tear down the next morning. With three
people and four Doodles, the RV was the best way to travel, but it was way
easier to just park the RV, drag suitcases into the hotel, get a good night’s
sleep and continue the journey the next morning. The motorhome worked well for
our one month stay at the campground before moving into our new house. The dogs
didn’t enjoy being cooped up without a place to run, but now, they have a large
yard. Once the permanent back yard fence is installed, they will have a WHOLE
LOT more room to run.
I hope you find the perfect traveling ride.

Suncruiser 37B. It will also be our home while our old house sells and until
the new NC house is completed. Unfortunately, it’s a gasser, but the best
gasser setup for a large class A motorhome, the Workhorse chassis with the 8.1L
Chev/GM engine and Allison transmission. It has 46Kmi on it, everything works,
and it’s ready to go.

Re: [MBZ] 1965 Volvo PV544. How the Humble have Risen

2021-08-07 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
My Dad and I bought our 1958 PV444 for $3000 back in 1991. It had the original
B16 engine and 3 speed transmission replaced with the B18/4 speed setup. It was
partially restored and ran very well. When we moved up to Oregon, the moving
company didn’t ship the car for 8 months as it sat in their yard and got
vandalized. I still miss that little car.

Re: [MBZ] Der Sprinter wurde verkauft

2021-08-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Since they are familiar with Sprinters and put plenty of miles on them, I
figured that they must know something about the Blutec system. It’s the short
trips that are the worst. I hope it runs for a long time.
I’ll never buy another emissions choked Diesel! I was thinking about a pre-2007
Sprinter T1N with the in-line 5 2.7L if I can find one, or a Suburban/Yukon or
a Ford Expedition (I’m sure there are plenty of those in NC). The nearest MB
dealer is in Charlotte, nearly 70 miles away. My BIL would be happy to help me
service and maintain it, so I’m more inclined to get something older and
cheaper, especially since it won’t be driven daily. The area is served by Uber
and Lyft so we’re not stuck without rides even when we don’t have a driver.

[MBZ] Der Sprinter wurde verkauft

2021-08-03 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
As of yesterday at 4:30 PM, I no longer have Der DoodleWagen. Lutgard will now
be serving a Russian family of 12 from Seattle, yes, EVERY SEAT TAKEN!!!
They’ll be moving up to this awesome, 3500mi Sprinter from a 2013 Sprinter,
also 12 passenger 144WB, with 165Kmi! I only took an 11% depreciation hit since
I got $53K back from my original $59K investment. There is now a very empty
side driveway waiting for the next chapter to begin. We’re planning to take the
trip cross country to NC in a used motorhome of some kind (I’m hoping for a
Diesel). There would be much more room for dogs, and the MH would be our home
until the new house is completed around Nov 1. This week, a friend offered to
drive me down to the shop where my 240D has been residing for 1.5 years. I keep
calling in to ask for updates, but I never get a return call. Wouldn’t they
want the car picked up so they could use the shop space for something else? I’m
sure they would also like the money for the parts/labor. Something isn’t quite
adding up! I’m hoping that they didn’t screw it up to the point where they
can’t fix it. My concern is that they messed up the IP. They didn’t tell me
until after the fact that the replacement engine arrived without many parts
including the IP, injectors, flywheel and harmonic balancer. Rather than
shipping it back, they swapped all of these parts from my old engine. I’ll
soon be finding out what’s really going on. They’ve told me that it seems to
run strong with no blow by, but didn’t idle properly.Of course, I’ll keep y’all
posted.

Re: [MBZ] I’ll be moving…

2021-07-29 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have a few reasons why we want to sell the Sprinter. First, we are once again
without a driver, and I don’t want to have to pay extra to have it shipped.
Second, it’s primary use is just putting around town to here and there, lots of
idling and stop and go, none of which are good for a Diesel engine and even
worse for a modern one with DEF/DPF and EGR. Third, we could use the money for
moving expenses since we’ll have to pay for storage for our stuff so the house
can be staged properly and sold quickly. Once we get settled into the new
place, I can spend a LOT less money on maybe an older Sprinter

Re: [MBZ] OT residential air conditioner issue

2021-07-23 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We just had our A coil, lines and outdoor A/C unit replaced a couple months
ago. Once it was put back together, air flow wasn’t the same as before. When
they went underneath the house to check things out, they found that excess
condensation had rusted out the bottom of the air handler and a significant
percentage of air was being blown into the crawl space. The cause was believed
to be a failing condensate pump. If that’s your problem, the fix should be easy
enough.

Re: [MBZ] 2012 GL350 Bluetec 4Matic - 115k miles - $17,800

2021-07-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
There is so much that could happen with the OM 642 Bluetec engines and the
problems caused by the emissions system.

Some problems include too much fuel in the oil due to interrupting the
regeneration cycle for the DPF, inefficient combustion and soot buildup in the
oil due to the EGR, and in some extreme cases leading to timing chain where and
extreme oil consumption before 80K miles if not properly maintained. all of the
stuff that I’ve read is starting to make me consider selling my sprinter and
getting one that’s gas powered. However, I don’t think I would be too happy
with a small four-cylinder engine pulling that big van around.

Re: [MBZ] Nanny car adventure

2021-05-20 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
They even have “nannies” on RC cars. A few brands have active vehicle control
(AVC), and then, Traxxas came out with Traxxas Stability Management (TSM). It
controls traction by regulating the power of the motor/engine, and a gyro built
into the receiver regulates the steering servo to keep the car straight as it’s
sliding or bumping over rocks. Of course, for fun factor, most of the time, I
keep mine off!! On the street, it has saved me from crashes when I get a little
too wild.

Re: [MBZ] Okiebenz visits Hoovie’s Garage

2021-03-13 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The other day, I happened to stumble upon a site listing the emissions related
problems pertaining to the Sprinter and OM642 Bluetec Diesels. It seems to be
a cascading effect as oil vapors are reintroduced via the PCV into the intake
eventually getting burned and exhausted to the DPF. Also, interrupting the
regeneration causes fuel to dilute the oil causing another host of problems
including timing chain failure as early as 80K miles. The fix was shorter oil
change intervals, better oil with esthers in it, an oil filter (Donaldson?)
that will filter down to 10 microns rather than the 30 micron capability of the
factory filter. A catch can was also recommended. Although my Sprinter has only
2K miles on it, I certainly want to implement these fixes so that it will not
become a money pit the moment the extended warranty is up.

our Honda Odyssey. I’m sure glad that the plan didn’t work out that way. The
Sprinter is everything we could ever want, plenty of space, reasonable comfort
though not quite the level of comfort of the Odyssey, but it has room for the
dog crates, paddle boards, RC cars, or whatever the haul happens to be. Our two
full-sized Goldendoodles are nearly done with their training, so they will have
a place to ride. Will it be leaking oil and Diesel when our 8-year extended
warranty is up?

Re: [MBZ] OT - Facebook Rant

2021-02-20 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I find that those who are looking for something for nothing are the ones who
want to negotiate/lowball before seeing the item in person. The serious ones
want to see pictures, and some even know what the items are worth. I really get
annoyed when someone offers half price or less. I usually don’t even reply to
those.

Re: [MBZ] A Not So Good Stealership Service Experience With Der DoodleWagen

2020-12-11 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’m not sure about the tire pressure. I filled them up last month, fronts 63PSI
and rears 75PSI per spec. It was SSOOO busy yesterday When we dropped
her off that I wouldn’t be surprised that it was simply overlooked/skipped. I
plan to fill out any service quality assessment forms that I receive. Regarding
the loner car AKA courtesy vehicle, it was a GLA250 4Matic base model which
seemed to be a good little SUV. It was powered by a 2.0L 4 cylinder with an
eight-speed DSG transmission with a 0-60MPH time of 6.6sec!! Also, it was rated
at 24MPG city and 33MPG HWY, not bad for a compact SUV! While we were waiting
around for the van, we looked at several SUPS including the Mexican-assembled
GLB250, the GLC350 and the GLE 350 as well as the GLS450 which stickered at
$95K! It, as well as the $114K GLS63 AMG, were the only ones that were powered
by something other than a turbocharged 4 cylinder. The only Mercedes-Benz
equipped with a Diesel engine is the Sprinter.

Hello Benzers. Yesterday was Lutgart’s turn to get her yearly oil change and
address the three recalls. This also included the A service which comprised
oel/filter, fuel filter change, inspection and tire pressure check. Today,
after waiting well over an hour for pickup, we headed home. As we were slowly
trekking down the freeway in the rain at 40MPH, I consulted her for a fuel
economy check revealing only 9.8MPG! WOW! Since the fuel filter was changed, I
knew that the low mileage was due to a leak that must be pretty severe since
that is well less than half the normal fuel economy. Arriving home, there was a
strong Diesel smell around the front of the van. Also, the real time display
showed that the right front tire pressure was low and showing a hotter tire
temp than the others. This is after PROFESSIONALS serviced my van! If I knew
the location and procedure for replacing the fuel filter, I would have been
servicing my own vehicle! As the saying goes, the only way to fix it right

but also have them top off my fuel tank as well.

2020-12-07 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I haven’t personally owned any air-cooled VW’s, but my Dad owned quite a few. I
remember a 1967 Baja Bug with stinger exhaust that would backfire LOUDLY
between shifts which scared me as a kid. Years later, he bought a 1973 Beetle
for $500 that had rusted floors, and a 1964 Karmann Ghia that was hit in the
front end that he bought as a project. I helped him cut the damaged nose off
and hold the junkyard sheet metal in place so he could weld it. I also
remember starting it with a ratchet which was pretty cool! We drove it around
the neighborhood with no fenders as it sipped fuel from a coffee can just to
see what it could do. My oldest Sister had a 1962 VW Ragtop Bus, boy would I
LOVE to have that one now!

[MBZ] OT Sleep Apnia and CPAp machines

2020-10-30 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello listers. I remember a discussion a while back when someone (Kaleb?) was
diagnosed with sleep apnia requiring a CPAP. My wife had her sleep study a
couple weeks ago, and the report said that she had stopped breathing 12 times
in an hour. I’m a heavy snorer myself, so chances are pretty good that I also
have it. For those of you with CPAP experience, how did it work or how is it
working? has quality of sleep increased? Do you need to sleep fewer hours than
before CPAP?

Great ride! I used to ride a tandem bike on long distance road rides years ago,
and after one of those, you REALLY have an idea of how good/bad your seat is!
Distance riding is very enjoyable if you have a good seat.

Re: [MBZ] Daimler cheated too? (I'm sure VW feels better now)

2020-09-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
There was a HUUUGE difference in the DSG transmission in the 2014 Beetle
TDI and the nearly identical new 2015. The 2014 was quite jerky starting out
like a novice driving a manual, and the 2015 was nearly as smooth as a
conventional automatic transmission. The shifts were quick and crisp.

Re: [MBZ] New truck but not benz

2020-09-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Sounds like a very nice truck indeed! I’ve been enjoying the Sprinter which has
been getting time as Der RC CarWagen, Der PaddleboardWagen for last weekend’s
trip to the lake, and today, Der DoodleWagen once again. The air quality lately
has been unhealthy to hazardous due to smoke from wildfires, so the Doodles are
at the indoor kennel for a few days. I sure do love that van!

Years ago when I was a kid, my parents had a 1972 Pinto wagon with the 2.0l
SOHC engine with an automatic transmission. S.L.O.W!!! I don’t think my Dad
ever messed with the carb though he was a pretty good mechanic. He bought it
with a crashed front end, installed the sheet metal and radiator off another
car, and with $350 spent on both cars, she was operational once again.

2020-09-08 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We have had a Crazy East wind event here in Western Oregon with nearly 30MPH
sustained winds with gusts to 60-70MPH! It was enough to topple a significant
section of the neighbor’s poplar tree sending it through the fence, across the
shared private driveway and nearly into another neighbor’s living room window!
He got his Stihl chain saw out and got right to work. That 20” saw was
awesome! It didn’t have any trouble, and restarted easily.

Re: [MBZ] Boing Emergency Order

2020-07-25 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
One of our flights back from North Carolina on Monday was in a 737 that had a
badly functioning/faulty APU. The air conditioning was very very in adequate
because of this! I don’t know why that plane was even allowed to continue
flying?

[MBZ] My New Acquisition

2020-07-06 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello everyone! The car is at home in the driveway thanks to a free AAA tow
although I think she could have made it home under her own power! My friends
and I got there, yanked out the dead group 49 battree, installed the new one I
purchased from NAPA on the way and lit her off with barely a chirp of the
starter It vibrates due to bad motor mounts, but it runs on all 4!! The
lady said that it got a new transmission last year, and by the way it shifts
into reverse with only a half second delay, I believe it! Since there were no
ominous noises in the drivetrain rolling it back and forth, we decided to take
it around the block. It ran pretty well other than a harsh 1-2 shift, and it
seemed to shift well into 3rd. The only sound I heard was one of the rear rotor
back plates rubbing agains the rotor which must have been the “gnarly sound”
she heard while driving during its last trip into town. I don’t hear any diff
whining at 30MPH or under, but I’ll know more once we get her up to highway
speed. Now, I really don’t want to part it out since it’s too good for that.
The front seats are pretty broken down just like those in Hildegard, but the
body seems at least as good. I now have 2 240D’s, and this one was half as much
money at $750!

Re: [MBZ] w123 2.88 diff anyone?

2020-07-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Yes, that would be quite expensive to ship! I am not sure how much one would
weigh? I have contact information from a guy that offered one for $250 to the
lady selling the 240D if I decide to go that route. My new guide dog is
currently in training until around the new year, and my wife’s guide dog isn’t
very good in the passenger seat since he would rather just look around than
give me proper directions!

2020-07-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I found a 240D parts car that has everything I need for mine, the driver’s
seat, windshield, and possibly other things I might find. The person is selling
it since the differential went out. everything else seems to work but the AC,
so when I pick it up on Monday, I will have to make a decision to either part
it out or just replace the differential and put it up for sale. unlike mine, it
is the fancier one with the sunroof and power windows.

It is probably 20 miles away from Hillsboro, and it’s 10 years older than me.
It would be cool to have a Mercedes of my birth year. since I would prefer a
Diesel, that would leave me with a 1972 220D, quite primitive compared to my
240D. I like the 107 and 116, but I’ve never spent much time around a W108 SE

I wish I would have kept the 1962 Corvair Monza Convertible that we had in the
mid to late 1990’s. It was fun winding along the backroads between Redmond and
Bend, Oregon once it got going. It had the 2-speed Powerglide automatic
transmission. I’m not sure how the acceleration compares to a 240D, but that
would be an interesting drag race!

We have an LG in-line compressor refrigerator that’s half way into it’s 5th

I send this! Our Whirlpool top mount refrigerator in my Shoffice has begun to
sound as if it has a cricket inside it after just over 4 years. We also have a
5-year-old Samsung HUGE capacity front loader washer/dryer pair and love ‘em!

Traxxas RC’s are relatively durable and reliable. I have a 1/16 Traxxas Mini
E-Revo VXL Brushless that is quite fun with its instant acceleration and
massive wheelies. The brushed version I had was easier to handle and nearly the
same top end speed. A company called RPM makes many “unbreakable” parts that
have a lifetime guarantee including suspension arms, axle bearing carriers,
bulkheads etc. I’ve only ever broken a bumper, and rendered a suspension arm
unusable since the hinge pin was bent so bad that it couldn’t be removed.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Slot Cars

2020-05-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I spent a few years in the 90’s racing electric slot cars. The track owner
developed a clicker setup mounted to the bottom motor screw. It used an
adjustable bracket to mount a strip of thick Lexan bent at the end that made
contact with the main drive gear. The whole setup would vibrate, and the
opposite end of the strip would resonate against the Lexan body for even more
noise. This allowed me to distinguish the sound of my car from the others.
After a race or two, the worn part of the strip could be trimmed off,
readjusted and re-bent to click loudly once again. It was a true work of art,
and it made the world of slot car racing accessible to me!

Re: [MBZ] Sticking my neck out

2020-05-14 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’ll let you know how it goes. I use a UV sanitation system which makes the
water nearly drinkable. During the hottest parts of the summer, we sometimes
have to put in some natural algaecide to keep the water from getting a greenish
tint, usually near the end of the season. This pump is supposed to be able to
turn over the same amount of water at half power as my current single speed
pump can handle. At least this pump issue happened while temps have dropped
into the low 60’s, so by the end of next week when the new pump gets here, it
will be warmer once again.

I like the ads for cars for sale, crack or not. I do like the off-topic stuff
too if it Is relevant to my life. I can’t wait to get my 240D back from the
shop! A bit more OT, I had to extract a male PVC fitting that broke off inside
my swimming pool pump when I was trying to tighten it down to fix a leak. I
found an internal pipe wrench that worked wonderfully to get inside the 1.5”
threaded piece and allowed me to thread it right out. The pump is very old with
squeaky bearings, so I purchased a variable speed 1.5hp Pentair pump that uses
1/8 of the electricity to circulate the water. It was only a couple hundred $
more than the standard single speed pumps which are being phased out by federal
mandate next year.
