Re: [MBZ] Need help selecting Windows laptop
I recently ordered a Dell netbook with a six-cell battery and Ubuntu, which is scheduled to be delivered to me tomorrow. I'll get a standalone USB DVD player/burner that I can use with either it or my Macs. It ran $354 plus tax and shipping; the only options I got were the six-cell battery and Bluetooth. The two people I know who own netbooks say they are very slow, but they're both running Windows on theirs. Seems to me that with a 1.6 GHz processor and a gig of RAM it should be snappy enough to do basic tasks, and I'm hoping that it will have enough poot to handle minor photo editing, too. (The built-in Mini SD slot makes it a natural companion for my cameras, which all write to Mini SDs.) One of the build options substitutes a 16GB solid-state drive for the 160GB hard drive, so I'm assuming a Mini SD could serve as a boot drive if need be. I'll report back after I've spent a little time with it. --mf On Fri, Jan 1, 2010 at 12:48 AM, Redghost redgh...@comcast.net wrote: Depends on the netbook. They have added little functionality and much bloat since then. A couple of years ago, I looked at the size of installed, fully patched 2000 pro, XP pro and Wista. They were all about 9 GB. THe problem with 2000 Pro was that it got to where it took hours and hours to load it and all the SPs and patches. Now XP is in that boat. I know, I should slipstream the patches and then an install would be reasonable. But I need a clean install so seldom that it never seems worthwhile to do the slipstream... Both XP and Wista can be Optimized for performance and turn the start menu to Classic to make then run faster and look like Win 2000. I do that to every one I operate. Unfortunately, 2000 was an unfinished product, and many of the functions were cut. XP is close to what 2000 was billed to be before release, but they added that stupid bubble gum interface (and moronic start menu) 7 is more patches added to the patches, and there is no compelling reason to buy it, especially for the price they want. Contrary to a prior post, a full retail, full version of Mac OS 10.6 is $139, not $250. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

So I don't blame MBZ for not talking about it. To some people, quality describes how many defects a new example includes. To other people (most of us) it describes how durable a particular model is. And still to other people quality may mean how beautifully the bodywork and materials are put together. And I''ve often associated the word with how robust an object is and how much abuse it can withstand. Remember the Ford Quality is Job 1 campaign? I have friends who worked at Ford and were proud of it that movement. But as I listened to them and thought about it, their definition of quality really didn't mean much to the consumer. Ford used a industrial definition that identifies quality as how consistently any part, or assembly of parts, meet their specification. So they could define their objective for a certain model to be a cheap POS. And if the final product was truly a cheap POS, they considered it top quality. Conversely, if that model performed better than a POS, it failed the quality test. So, of course MBZ is not going market the word quality when there are so many ways to fail that expectation. Re: [MBZ] I am NEVER selling on ebay again
I'm with you. I posted my '82 300D on eBay about a month ago, and it was immediately bid up to my reserve price by a guy in Austin. I thought why would a guy in Austin bid on this car? but he had quite a history and a 100% approval rating, so I was pretty comfortable with it. Comes the end of the auction, and in the last minute the guy is outbid by one dollar by a new user with no bid history and no rating. And of course he reneged on the deal, citing a family emergency. I did some sleuthing, and found out the second bidder is from Austin, too -- what a coincidence! I sent an email to both guys accusing them of being the same person and got no response from either. In a nutshell, the first bidder (the one with the history) sells cars similar to the one I was selling, so he essentially took mine off the market by bidding it up, then got out of the deal by using his second account to outbid himself. I had to wait through eBay's mandated time periods (a total of about three weeks) before I could get my account credited -- I'm sure glad the credit card they have on file for me is expired, or they would have sucked their commission out of my account and it would have taken me even longer to get a refund. And there is absolutely no way to complain about this guy. As Kaleb so eloquently put it, sellers have no recourse. So screw eBay. Craigslist hasn't worked for me either. I guess I'll advertise it on autotrader.com -- $65 for an ad that runs for up to a year, which is cheaper than eBay. Or I'll just buy a car cover for it and keep it so the mice have a place to live in the winter, and add it to my list of projects. --mf On 11/21/09, Kaleb C. Microsoft Vista Sales Slip in Digital Media | Tech | Web/Tech Barron's Eric Savitz (Tech Trader Daily) notes that Windows' Vista isn't exactly lighting it up over at Amazon's Software best seller list. Quoting Fred Hickey, Savitz observes: The real point here is that the slow uptake for Vista has ripples for the entire PC supply chain. “Tech bulls expected Microsoft’s new operating system, Vista, to be a big demand driver in 2007,” Hickey writes in his newsletter. “The PC industry built up inventory in anticipation of a major upgrade cycle. However, we now know that Vista’s intial reception, from both business and consumer customers, was far chiller than almost anyone imagined…Instead of a Vista pickup, it looks we’ve entered a Vista stall.” We've made the same point several times over the past few months, twice last month alone. And Vista? At the moment, its #37 on the Amazon Software Best Sellers -- behind such huge sellers such as Dragon Naturally Speaking Speech Recognition (14), Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 (22), and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe (31). What really must burn Ballmer Co. is that Vista at #37 is one place behind #36 -- Apple's latest OS upgrade (Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.6.) considering that Apple's installed base is less than 4% of Microsoft's. . . . Re: [MBZ] A little question on biodiesel relavent to this list
Here in Hoosierland, the government is all excited about ethanol. Call me cynical, but I think that's largely because there's a lot of corn grown around here, and in a farm state finding a new market for corn is a politically Good Thing. But according to a recent Car and Driver story, it takes so much energy to produce ethanol that the net energy gain is very small (go check out http://www.caranddriver.com/ features/11174/tech-stuff-ethanol-promises.html for more). We grow a lot of soybeans here too, and a fair amount of canola, but corn is king and the prospect of converting the nation's fleet to diesel -- a proven technology with an established network of fuel supply stations -- is, maddeningly, less appealing to The Powers That Be than developing a new dual-fuel technology and creating a new distribution network for ethanol. --mf On Aug 28, 2006, at 10:16 AM, Tom Hargrave wrote: Small diesels are much more efficient, look at the VW engines that get close to hybrid mileage. (I expect to continue using it with OS X for five years or so at least, or until there is some piece of software I need to run that absolutely requires newer hardware... at which point I still won't get rid of the G4, I'll just run Linux on it and get a new machine to run OS X.) I also still use a Lombard (2nd-generation G3 PowerBook) running OS 9.2.2. Never a problem with that one either. But almost everyone I know with newer Macs, especially the boxy G3 and G4 iBooks (not the original toilet-seat G3s), has had trouble with them---mostly hardware problems suggestive of corner cutting and decline in quality of materials. Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK
I suggest checking the Web sites of the Bureaus of Motor Vehicles in both states. You may find some information and even downloadable forms there. A few months ago I bought a car in Florida to register in Indiana. I already knew what the Indiana requirements were -- a title and a bill of sale -- so I got those. Florida had a Web form for a bill of sale so I used that to make the seller feel better, but it could have been written on a cocktail napkin and met the legal requirements. Before I left for Florida to pick up my car, I called my insurance agent and told him what I was up to. He mailed me a proof of insurance card, which I took with me, and I took along a current plate from one of my other cars for the trip home. That's not legal, but it made me feel better -- and if I had been stopped for some reason, I had enough documentation to prove that I was the legal owner of the car and that I was covered by insurance. Got home without incident, and the car is now legally registered. --mf _ L. Mark Finch Indianapolis 1982 300D Turbodiesel

Re: [MBZ] Wine in Phoenix
Pinot Noir pairs well with traditional Thanksgiving fare, but if you go that route expect to spend at least $25 per bottle. Many good ones come from Oregon (particularly Willamette Valley), California, Burgundy and New Zealand. Names to look for include Cherry Hill, Sineann, Rex Hill, Elk Cove, WillaKenzie, Saintsbury, King Estates, Drouhin, Sanford and Amisfield, among others. Cloudline is a good, medium-bodied, under-$20 choice. Robust white wines also work well -- think California Chardonnay (Travis, Hendry, Truchard, Miner, Sebastiani) or a Pinot Gris from Oregon or Alsace (Adelsheim, Elk Cove, Sineann, Schlumberger). For dessert, a few sips of Tawny Port from Australia is hard to beat, especially if pecan pie is on the menu. Yalumba Antique Tawny and Chateau Reynella Old Cave Tawny are delicious; expect to pay about $20 for a 375 ml bottle. For a real treat, spring for the Yalumba 50 Year Old Tawny (about $50) or the Buller Calliope ($100). Rosemount's Old Benson and d'Arenberg's Nostalgia are also quite good. Hardy's Whiskers Blake is a real bargain at $15 for a 750 ml bottle. Hope this helps. Don't forget to pick up some cranberry juice for yourself. --mf On Nov 20, 2005, at 11:42 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What kind of wine should I take to a Thanksgiving dinner? Re: [MBZ] Very off topic -- Volvo's
My bias is for the 240s of the late 80s and early 90s. They're good, solid cars, parts are plentiful and cheap, and they're relatively easy to work on. --mf
Re: [MBZ] Diesel prices are making me angry
The local stations in Zionsville (northwest of Indianapolis) were advertising diesel for $3.70 9/10 today, up a penny since yesterday. --mf
Re: [MBZ] new fuel record
I drove from central to southwestern Indiana and back today, and diesel prices ranged from $3.09 per gallon* to $3.68 per gallon. I noticed that some stations have taken to advertising the price of the off-road diesel (the stuff the farmers buy that doesn't include road-use tax). *The $3.09 rate at Flying J didn't apply to cars, for some reason. At the car pumps, it was $3.15 per gallon. A note was stuck to the pump that said CAR DIESEL IS 6 CENTS MORE. Don't know why that would be, but it honked me off. Lowest price I noticed for gasoline was $2.49. On Oct 20, 2005, at 11:04 AM, Ron Dwelle wrote: New record here in Michigan. Today, diesel was $1.20/gallon higher than regular gas--$3.499 for diesel and $2.299 for regular unleaded.
Re: [MBZ] dieselvolk swarm soybean oil section at Costco today
I don't think the government is too concerned with the food supply -- we can all just eat cake, right? What will inevitably bring on regulation is the realization that they're losing motor fuel tax money. Re: [MBZ] Jug of soy
At CostCo, it's 71 cents per quart -- $2.84 per gallon. Cheapest diesel fuel in these parts is $2.97. --mf On Oct 4, 2005, at 6:52 PM, Wilton Strickland wrote: 35 lb. jug of soy oil = ~4.6 gal. Wilton
