[MBZ] Electrical Relay guide

2015-08-01 Thread LarryT via Mercedes

I found this when looking for info on 12v Relays:
http://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/relay-guide.html

All of the info is helpful but the part I thought the owners of older
cars might benefit from is down toward the bottom. It tells how to add
a buzzer using a simple relay wired to the front door light switch so a
warning can be added if you leaves the lights on. Also, a relay can be
added to add fog lights to the main headlight circuit as well as a few
other ideas.

Along with the above there's info on testing relays and the internal
design of relays so the correct replacement can be found if need be.

Enjoy -

[MBZ] Grill Removal - Unable to Open hood -- W124 '91 300D

2015-07-25 Thread LarryT via Mercedes

Hi Gang -
I have tried all your suggestions and a few of my own to get the
hood to pop up so I can open it. I bought a used Grill Shell w/Insert
so I can break up the original one and hopefully get the hood latch to
release.

There's a pair of fans for the AC condenser but it looks like
there's enough room to work with.

So i am wondering if there's any creative ways to break open the
grill element? I think I can get the chrome surround off once the
insert is opened up and then will have enough room to reach the latch
release it.

Re: [MBZ] W124 Hood Won't Release

2015-07-25 Thread LarryT via Mercedes

Hi Gang -
After trying everything to get the hood open (thanks for all the
great suggestions), I used a die grinder with a thin cutting blade that
went through that plastic like butter!Once I had the grill insert
cut out I thought I'd give it anohter try and see if we could get it
open. I asked my wife to help and while I sat on the hood, she tried
to pull the little tab that pops through grill when the release is
pulled. It seemed to move s 1/4 or so but it wasn't going farther than
that.

So I got down and studied the situation and finally focused on the
pull latch that sticks through the grill. It appeared the threads of
the bolt that holds the tab on was rubbing against the radiator support
bar! Sure enough, I used a screw driver with almost no force, it came
around that round support!Several months ago and many, many hood
opening and closings later, I had replaced the little tab that sticks
through the grill. I must have put the bolt in backwards and
eventually, the threads on the bolt caught on the support and refused to
let it go.

I pulled the bolt out and reversed it so it would clear from now
on. It was a dumb mistake which cost me around $100 for the replacement
grill and insert plus many hours agonizing over how I'd get it open and
finally about 3 hours to actually remove and replace the grill.

So it's fixed and at least the replacement grill looks better than
my old one.

Just be forewarned -- if you must replace the little tab that
extends through the grill, be sure to put the head of the bolt on the
passenger side to prevent an interference.

Thanks again for helping me think through this problem -

That reminds me, I haven't had the hood open on my S210 since January.
I could do as Jim suggests, but with a 210 it would cost me a grill insert,
A/C condenser, and radiator at the minimum. If I could get the headlight out
I think it would be easy. Crawling under with a flashlight, I just can't seem
to get a straight shot at the latch from below.

Right before the failure, I took both latches out and cleaned/lubed them so they
would actually latch. I suspect the cable fell out of the left one after I put
it
back together.

Re: [MBZ] W124 Hood Release will not work

2015-07-15 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
my 91 300D still has a hood release that will not do anything. The
lever is attached to the lower dash next to the A Pillar. I have
pulled, pushed and cursed at it will equal results. Nothing budges.
Efforts to move the hood itself are just as frustrating. Neither side of
the hood will lift even a little and the grill section does not budge at
all. Efforts to push down also failed. The hood does not move in any
direction - I put much of my 230#'s on each side and nothing seemed to move.

That latch mechanism seems completely frozen. There was no inkling of
a problem in the past - I changed the fog light bulb approx 5 days ago
and everything operated normally.

If I remove the lower engine cover will I be able to release the hood
from below? I don't recall seeing the latch last time I was under the
front end.

If all my efforts fail, would this be a job for a Indy or should I bite
the bullet and take it to a dealer?

[MBZ] Sticker on Used MB

2015-07-02 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
I was browsing some used MBs and noticed a sticker in the door frame of

Right Front Door - 06-2015

I assume there are air bags in each location and each will need to be

reduction. Don't recall the year of the ML but I think it was between

If America wants to command China’s respect, it has to widen the

show far more caution. But the opposite is true: the technology gap is
closing, and China knows it. America still has a technological lead and the
resources to widen it–should it choose to do so. There is no obvious
political constituency for such an effort though, and no prominent leader

Re: [MBZ] OT Anti-gun crowd kills another woman in NJ

2015-06-14 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
It always makes me LOL when the anti-gunners say they don't want
everyone to be able to get guns so all the people around her/him might
have one. Then someone asks them What makes you think they don't have
one already? It seems the snti-gun crowd believe a law will stop a
criminal. Even with over 22,000 gun laws on the books, the criminals
still get guns when they want one! They're called criminals for a
reason. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy
with a gun. All those restrictive orders just seem to make the ex's angry!

A new study of panda waste brings bad news for the endangered species:
Their stomach microbes don't match their diet.

Though pandas have been eating bamboo for at least 7 million years, with
the plant being the bear's sole source of food for the past 2 million
years, it turns out the microbes in their guts are meant to digest meat.

The findings of the genetic analysis of 121 samples of panda feces
published in the journal*mBio* may put [pandas] at high risk of
extinction, the authors wrote.

Scientists have long been wondering about pandas' evolution because their
stomachs are not as long as other herbivores. Longer guts allow animals
more time to break down tough plant parts.

The researchers hypothesized that pandas would have developed special
bamboo-optimized microbes to help them break down plants faster, but, as
their study shows, that is not the case.

Instead, the study found, pandas are living a highly fragile lifestyle by
relying so much on bamboo (Karen Kaplan, *Los Angeles Times*

you might want to tell the sellers there is no such thing as a 1958
MG-TD. It is definitely a TD, but in 1958 MG was selling MGA's. The TD
started around 1950 and ended around 1954 - I say around because there
were no hard rules for determining the model year of a vehicle. My 66
MGB was built in 66 but was registered as a 67 because that's when it
left the dealers lot. Things were standardized in 1968.

Anyway tell them I'll help with their MG research if needed.

feared getting left somewhere if the battery died and kept me from

Andrew,

What Grant said. You don't even actually have to touch a gun, so you
can keep your hoplopobia intact. Just sitting in on the classroom
would be enlightening. I am not an instructor, and the only formal
training I've had was at summer camp. I used to be pretty good with
the camp 22s on the range.

If you like conservation too, then you might see if there is an Isaac
Walton near you. They do all kinds of conservation projects and most
sponsor safe gun handling instruction. Many have a rifle range or a
trap or skeet range. In my teens, I really enjoyed trap shooting.
You'd probably like it if not for the hoplopobia.

Yet again, I feel I must speak in response to your latest posting.

First: The article is in error because of it's hoplopobic reporting
focus.
Apparently, you are drawn to that, which is your right, just as it is
mine

to point it out.

Second: It seems now likely both yourself and the writer of the posted
article are not aware of the standard practice at ALL gun shows that
requires the checking of ALL weapons and then securing them with a
safety

tie wrap through the firing mechanism UPON ENTRY to the gun show. NRA is
simply a HUGE GUN SHOW... This is simply standard safety practice
used at

ALL gun shows to ensure against unintended discharge of any weapon.

Third: This practice is a STANDARD SAFETY PRACTICE when entering and
exiting any shooting range I have ever attended. ALL weapons are
cleared of

bullets in the barrel, and ALL magazines or cylinders are emptied BEFORE
leaving the line of fire, while the barrel is pointed DOWN RANGE..
Simple
and primary gun safety practiced by RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS as a
universal

practice.

Fourth: The writer attempts to make this standard safety practice a
platform for hoplophobic social engineering under the guise of gun
control.. This is an insult to anyone who understands and practices
standard gun safety. Thus, wrong.

Fifth: I invite you to satisfy your fascination with all things gun by
making contact with a certified firearms instructor and taking an
introductory course where such basics are covered as gun handling, gun
safety, and very basic shooting skills introduction. I sincerely believe
you would come to understand more about the real facts of ownership and
responsibility that comes with ownership of a firearm.

I am a certified firearms instructor myself and over the years have
often
come in contact with people who only saw a gun on TV or the movies,
being

used most improperly and often illegally. These perceptions have become
ingrained in the minds of many, unfortunately. I urge you to expose
yourself to the facts on gun safety and use.

There is a group called USCCA which, if you contact them, will steer
you to
one of their certified instructors, in your local area, which you may
find

helpful and educational.

You are a smart man.. the decision is yours, I only suggest.

Respectfully,

Grant...

FYI, I have new Bilsteins at all 4 corners - they made a huge difference
in the stance of the car! Before it was 1/2 lower on the passenger

same, compare a Bilstein to a Monroe! The shaft on the Monroe is approx
5/8 dia while the Bilsteins are 1 or more. These shocks are

they do crack on occasion.

Spring pads can and will compress over time. I'm getting ready to
replace the pads on the 95 S500, as it sits a bit low in the back
based both on visual and measured height.

On point to note: MB can't tell you what spring pad is on your car,
as they are fit during production based on the height. They can tell
you what spring is on it, but you have to visually inspect the pad or
shim as they call it by looking at it in place and counting the
burls that stick out.

The burls are little nubs or pins of rubber molded into the side of
the shim and are usually visible by just looking at the shim from
below. I believe the number of burls range from one to five.

The number of burls correspond to the different shim thicknesses,
which your parts supplier can identify when you tell them how many
yours has.

In my case I was all ready to replace the rear springs, but I'm going
to do the shims first and see how that goes.

stopped engaging 1st. it occasionally works but mostly it doesn't. The

I asked the list when it 1st happened and rec'd a couple of
suggestions - the thing that baffles me the most is that it works for
4-3 but not for 2-1.

It's been a long time since I've been inside a AT and I can't think
of what might be the problem. Maybe dirt in the valve body? maybe a
bad solenoid or something?

(BB00.40-P-0231-01A) which lists what spec sheet (e.g., 236.14) is needed
for which model of transmission (e.g., 722.6).

I cannot, however, find out what model of transmission my car has.

Does anyone know where I can find that information?

Thanks,

Craig

Re: [MBZ] Overheating 240D more info

2015-02-18 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
Ditto - if the car is moving there is plenty of air flow through the
radiator. Like others mentioned, there's not much need for a large
capacity of cooling at this time of year. My 240D doesn't generate a
lot of heat - not as much as the 300D T at least.

When my 300D overheated last summer (temp went into the red zone) I
feared a head problem or a damaged head gasket. WHen I repaired the
obvious problem (failed hose) I did a Oil Analysis test and it confirmed
there was no water/coolant in the oil. (phew!) so it appears I dodged a
bullet.

An Oil analysis is a easy way to confirm the head gasket integrity.
Seems like you've been struggling with this for a while. Maybe to time
to definitively to eliminate a potential problem?

BTW, i'm also a huge proponent of technical/trade schools where people

You should be able to unbolt the compressor with hoses attached from
the bracket, then tie it back. That way you don't have to open a
good sealed system.

Also, my memory is not clear, but I'd look very carefully from
underneath. I am pretty sure it is possible to remove the alt and
brackets from under the car. It should be much easier than messing
with that dogawful bracket and disturbing a working york.

The trick is to start the hose on the WP, then slide in the the thermo housing,
start it on that then shove it together. Soap on the inside of the hose, or
WD40 helps too. I don't think it ever took me more than an hour including
putting the radiator hose back on and clamping everything down.

I could do it in a lot less than that if it was a contest.

[MBZ] OT - Auctions (other than ebay)

2015-02-01 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
I saw a commercial for Dashdeal.com the other day and went to
check it out. Indeed their claims appear true - big screen TVs were
being bought for for for $200-$300 or less. Along with IPads, I Phones,
Cameras, etc at similar savings. But the trick here is the company
behind the auction is making a fortune! Each bid cost $0.60 and each
bid is in $0.01 increments so a $200 winning bid has cost 2000 bids to
get there! 2000 x $.60= $1200 - the auction company is raking the cash
in! They can buy a 50 TV for around $500 (probably less at wholesale)
now so that $700 profit.

so it depends on how many bids an individual makes to know if they got a
good deal or not. Collectively they did not - but individually they
_might _have.

Yup

On one of mine, the rack is chewed up and I adjust it with a breaker

everything down. The rack and pinion adjuster is elegant, but too

When I did my 91 rear shocks I did /not /as I never saw a need to do so

I’m going challenge that logic for a number of reasons.

While I understand what you’re suggesting and it sounds all fine and dandy, you

of merchantability” as well - in other words, you’re alluding that there may be
some basis to their claims that the car is somehow defective or been
misrepresented.

I am assuming the car was sold as-is, with no warranty or guarantee. If in
fact, that is the case, any duress on the part of the buyer is theirs and
theirs only.

Do understand that if I sold something and it had a defect that I wasn’t aware
of, and the buyer brought it to my attention in a relatively short period of
time, I would try to work something out to address the defect (after verifying
that it truly was a defect.) If this is nothing more than a veiled attempt at
dealing with buyers remorse, which it sounds like it is, too bad.

I once sold a 15” MacBook Pro on Craigslist. The buyer came by with his son and checked
the MBP out in detail. I spoke to them at length about their intended use, as this was
the last of the CoreDuo machines, NOT Core2Duo, meaning it had reached end of life as far
as OS upgrades. I stated this clearly in the ad, discussed it with them at great length,
etc., going well out of my way to make sure they understood the limitations of the
laptop. They assured me they knew all about it and that they had researched
their needs in detail, and this machine would be just fine.

The next day I get a text from the buyer that they’re coming over to return the
machine, as it is “no good”. I call them and ask what is wrong. After five
minutes of nonsensical carrying on about how the machine is “bad”, they finally
come out and say that the FireWire port is not working. We had checked it when
they took delivery and it was functioning.

I told them to bring it by with whatever device they were using and if it was
indeed defective i would return their money as long as they returned everything
in the same condition it was sold in.

They came back a few hours later with an external FireWire hard drive and a
later model MacBook for reference. We tested everything, and it turned out
that the FireWire port on their external hard drive was bad. End of story.
They were not happy.

Got a text the next morning from the guy saying the MBP didn’t meet their needs
and they would be selling it. ???

That was the last time I ever sold something on CL from my house. It was scary.

[MBZ] Brake Noise W124 '91 300D

Hi Gang
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New year! ;-)

I noticed something for the 1st time today - as the brakes were
applied I could hear a soft high pitched buzz that started and stopped
every time the pedal is pressed and stops when the pedal is released.

It's pretty hard to hear unless the radio is down pretty low.
The car has good pads all around and all have been checked within the
last 4-6 months -- the fluid is at the correct level also. Following
a 20 mi RT to the store and home I felt the ABS pump(?) in the left
front corner and it was cool. I seem to recall it or the lines to/from
it being hot in the past. Which should they - hot or cool?

What could that noise be? It is definitely not metal to metal -
i's like nothing I've heard before...

Thx Curt,
Actually the 300D gets driven at 45-60mph about 40 or more miles
per day. It's been like that since we bought it. It has 240k on
it and I just pulled a oil Analysis which came out *Perfect*. You are
right about SV saying I should use Dexron. I still have the M1 ATF in

Hello --
About 4 years ago I bought one of Rusty's rebuilt AT''s. It was
fine until about 3-4 months after the 2 year warranty expired when it
stopped engaging 1st. it occasionally works but mostly it doesn't. The
kick-down works perfectly for the 4-3 shift.

I asked the list when it 1st happened and rec'd a couple of
suggestions - the thing that baffles me the most is that it works for
4-3 but not for 2-1.

It's been a long time since I've been inside a AT and I can't think
of what might be the problem. Maybe dirt in the valve body? maybe a
bad solenoid or something?

any ideas?

Thx

Re: [MBZ] Let's raise the speed limit to 85 in MT!

2014-12-02 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
I am sure you're right about how bad people will allow their cars to
deteriorate and still drive them but I think we need to put the pressure
on our citizens to grow up and maintain their cars if they want to
drive at the speeds others find acceptable. IMO it's like the Nanny
state run amok that pervades our lives in so many ways.

BTW, a few years ago Road Track magazine ran a test (or at least wrote
about one conducted at a university) where people were put in cars with
the speedo covered up allowed to drive for X distance to see what
speed they would feel most comfortable driving. After they acclimated
to their speed, the majority of people drove at 100mph +/- 10mph. That
impressed me and I have remembered it for more than 40 years. I think
it was an article about radar and how it was used by police.

Anyway, there have been suggestions in the past for people to have
colored license plates or other markings to indicate their level of
driving ability experience - and could also be used to indicate
drivers (or their cars) that had been convicted of driving
drunk/high/texting,

And yes I realize that would escalate the Nanny state I am so much
against. But who's listening to me? ;-)

As for speed ratings, I always contended that cars should have speed

To put it in perspective: If you were to leave Kittery, maine, and

10 You could get to Virginia. From Extreme northwoods to the Old

IIRC, the interstate system was designed to be driven at 70mph by a

then, the cars have become more capable and crash-safe by leaps and bounds.
But I suspect the drivers are less competent and much less attentive on the

Unfortunately I think that attitude is universal in the US, - the lack
of knowledge of driving has moved to all segments of cars. It used to
be Porsche owners would either flash each others with a high beam blink,
or give a small wave, now, only owners of, say, pre 95, 911s return the
flash or wave! I used to remember the flashing behavior being common to
drivers of _all _sports cars but there are so few of the sports cars
that used to be everywhere - that the flashing between drivers has
disappeared with the cars. I used to see MGs, Triumphs, AH, Lotus,
Porsche, etc everywhere -- now I only see them at old car meetings.
BTW, I always wanted the emission laws to not apply to makers of less
than 5000 or so cars per year. As a part of the total number of cars on
the road their presence was miniscule to start with - now it's non existent.

I know, I'm living in the past...

What scares me is the difference in speed driven on the highways. We
drove

from AR to OK Sat. There was a LOT of traffic in the toll road between
Tulsa and OKC. At one point traffic was backed up for close to a mile
because one semi was driving 63 and trying to pass another that was
driving

61 (or so). They were see-sawing over the hills for several miles. The
slower traffic is as much a hazard as the faster traffic. I think
the speed

limits should have a 5mph spread, with severe penalties for exceeding
either end. Those who can't maintain the posted speed limits need to
get

off and find a two-lane.

IMO the w124s were easier to keep pristine - as yours and mine are. The
123's are great cars and very utilitarian but the rust bug loves them.
All the plastic on the 124s really keep the rust at bay.

The 124 is my wife's daily driver but she'd like something other than a
MB just as a change but I don't think I can find anything that will have
the build quality (yeah, I know) the MBs have so we will have something
for many years.

Re: [MBZ] Neuropathy IVIG

2014-11-10 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
I had IVIG treatments back in the late 90s when my disease 1st raised
its ugly head. I was to the point I was only sleeping 10 min or so at a
time due to pain and those 10 min were not very restful. It's amazing
what sleep deprivation will do.

The 1st IVIG treatment was pretty effective. I got about 5 hours of
great sleep for a change. 6 months later I got another IVIG treatment
and it was effective for a couple of months. We tried once more but I
didn't see change at all. we then went to narcotics and my neurologists
turned me over to a Anesthesiologist who tried similar methods before
putting a pump under the skin with Dilaudid (concentrated morphine) in
it dripping into my spine.

at some point in the early '00s, a med called Lyrica was developed which
made a huge positive difference. But I'm not so sure the original
diagnosis was 100% accurate.

I'd like to try weight loss and exercise but it's so hard to exercise
when my legs are a problem. My ortho surgeon suggested water exercise
which I hope to try soon. so we'll see.

mao said he forgot what caused the need for IVIG -- nerve damage. There
are variants but I was told mine is Chronic Inflammatory demylinating
polyneuropathy. (CIDP) . There's also Guilleme Berret (sp?) which can
also be quite bad. My only symptom is extreme pain while others have
pain and muscle loss causing some to become wheelchair bound. Others
have seen remission and have become almost 100% again.

Back to mao - my problem is the mylin covering on the nerve bundles is
being attacked by antibodies - when mylin is lost the signals to the
brain are confused. The nerve bundles look like millions of sausage
strings and the casing would be the mylin.

Wilt I both have the same disease - when I was getting the IVIG I was
told it was a $10K prescription -- thankfully I have insurance that
covered it. Some people have IVIG treatments very often - like 2-3 per
week. Maybe that would have helped me? But since the 3rd single
treatment didn't help it wasn't suggested that I continue.Plus, for
me, it was such an unpleasant experience i was not in much of a hurry to
repeat treatments. I am convinced one of the injections caused a DVT
(blood clot in leg) even though the Neur. said that wasn't the cause.
I'm convinced the thick, cold fluid that was fed into my vein did not
breakdown enough before reaching my legs and caused the blood in my leg
to coagulate causing the clot. But that's my interpretation.

Before this (in ~1996) I never lost time from work due to illness. But
this makes up for it. ;-)

The fun just never ends...

which he says his favorite MB.The 19 min video opens with Jay
driving his 600 with the opening playing a score of The Ride of the

Jay, (he asks that I call him by his 1st name), ;-) really
knows the details of his cars - he knows so many details, it's easy to
see he is a real gear head.
I knew some of the details of the 600 - like the hydraulic system
that controls the windows - but to watch the trunk lid close is a real
sight to see! Take a little time to watch it - it is really
impressive. Seeing that 600 made me wish I still had my 280SE 4.5 ;-)

[MBZ] The Road to Mercedes

2014-10-31 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
NBCSports is airing a program called Road to Mercedes which has a
couple of journalist driving from UK to Stuttgart in a loaner GL450 AMG
where they visit a restoration shop who restores MBs to 100 points.
They appeared to have 2 dozen 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters in various
stages of restoration - they then went to the AMG shop where they
assemble engines and watched as various engines were put together (a V8
takes 3.5 hrs start to finish) -- it was really amazing stuff! Keep
watching for reruns - I recommend this program - it's filled with MB
history -

Great story G,
That carbide Cannon sounds GREAT!I think they used to advertise
them in Comic Books or other magazines for imaginative kids. ;-)
Sometimes I wonder how we survived! no bike helmets, we had BB guns and
real guns, firecrackers, cherry bombs, M80s, etc. Once we got the
bright idea to make our own shrapnel bomb. We took a number of
firecrackers apart, poured the gunpowder into a old perfume bottle, lit
the fuse and ran like crazy!IIRC there were 3 of is and we all
managed to get 75 or more yards away and we flung our young bodies with
heads filled with mush on the ground behind a log a split second before
we heard a loud Boom! followed by the unmistakable sound of glass and
the other shrapnel we had added going through leaves, branches, etc -
all safely over our heads thank God!Like I said, it's a wonder we
survived! Kids today don't know how to use imagination to entertain
themselves ;-)

On non-school days we be out of the house after breakfast, grab a
tube of BBs and a BB rifle and not be home again until supper time. We
also used to play army with real guns - they had been de-activated or we
didn't have ammo )probably a good thing) and we spend the say shooting
each other. (of _course _we never would have shot at any person with
the real guns even if they had worked and we'd had ammo - i have to
remember my audience).

I and my friends did that through elementary school and part of Jr
HS - at which time we discovered that most dangerous game of all -
Girls! ;-) then we were well truly doomed! Yeah, how did we survive???

A few days later out rolled a cannon made from triple wall steam pipe, with
the bore just the right size to accept beer cans poured full of concrete.
The charge size was set by the amount of room from the breech end to the
back of the beer can, so it wasn't long till all the boys around my age in
the community were involved in cannon shots.

We started small. Our goal was to splash a shot into the pond down range
about 2000 ft. so we started walking beer cans out while playing with
elevation and shot gas charge size.. Naturally.. being boys, we used good
judgement [right?] and soon the goal became how far can this thing
shoot...

About evening time, on the third day of shooting ... the distance money
shot came about and we really let it go for broke...

Shortly my neighbor arrived in his pickup truck.. shall we say... very
upset? His dairy farm was 1 1/4 miles away and we had managed to deliver
the concrete filled beer can through the roof of his milking barn.. with a
barn full on cows, at milking time... [can you start counting how many bad
decisions it took to do that?]

The only really good news was, no one was killed, no animals were
injured...

The next day, my father cut the cannon up and delivered it to the scrap
yard..while I was at school.. I never saw it again.. All members of the
cannon shooting club were given the task of rebuilding the neighbors
barn.. and buying the materials to do the job, with a strict time schedule.
Which we did.

Most Swiss males have an automatic weapon (usually a SIG SG550 - Gasp!
there's an assault rifle in every home!) issued to them for Home Guard
use. They keep these fully automatic weapons with ammo along with
semi-auto sidearms (pistols) in their homes. It doesn't get much air
time because gun violence is so low and the commonality of guns doesn't
fit the anti-gun agenda of the media.

Also, in defense (sort of) NYC cops and their apparent lack of shooting
skills -- it seems most cops have a similar problem. Around here (Va.),
whenever there's a officer involved shooting, the officer invariably
empties their magazine. Newspaper coverage of other officer-involved
shootings have similar comments.

re Lead at gun ranges - Hmm... how is all that lead being exposed to the
users? I go to an outdoor shooting range every Wednesday and the lead
is either buried in a berm after we shoot it or it's in little boxes it
comes in usually encased in a copper jacket. I'd bet money lead levels
are very low/non-existent.Any news story concerning lead being
tracked home is likely distorted by an anti-gun attitude.

Larry,

The shock is the only safety which holds the rear suspension spring in
place. When you remove the shock, you must support either the wheel or the
spring link, so the suspension does not extend further and explosively
release the spring.

You can safely remove the springs by detaching the shocks and then jacking
up the car to relieve the pressure on the springs, and they will simply
fall out of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Tire source

2014-10-18 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
Speaking of Hankooks, I've been running them on my 91 300D and my 74 911
- all 8 tires look brand new. The MB has approx 40,000 miles on them
and they still look brand new. They have not seen much snow but what
they have has been handled with ease. No complaints about snow or rain
performance. Same for the 911 - very good traction in all conditions
and great wear resistance. Not as many miles on the 911 - maybe 12-15K.

They are priced lower than many tires but the price doesn't equal poor
qualities.

Re: [MBZ] Headlight Lens Restoration

2014-10-16 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
I used McGuires Plast-X on the windows in my convertible top - on
our '66 MGB. All 3 were very cloudy and yellowed, I could only see
shapes through them. I have done some BC/CC painting and have the DA
buffer with several buffing pads intended to buff out the clear coat.
When I finished buffing the 3 windows they looked like brand new! I
never dreamed they would look so much better. That's was in the Spring -
April I think, and the windows still look like new! The Plast-X has a
compound in it to polish the plastic as well as some waxes that protect.

the stuff sold on TV says it has polymers to keep the plastic
looking new. IMO that's kind of a generic description intended to make
people think they will be getting something special when they may not
actually get anything.

But I know Plast-X works. Plus, it's avalable everywhere, (i.e.,
walmart and FLAPS).

I forgot that I used Plast-X on the 91 300D. It polished the head
fog light covers but they were damaged by rock hits, etc that laft
small chips in the plastic. Naturally, nothing will fix that. So I
ended up with a shiny surface that was pock-marked.

Good Luck --
