Re: [MBZ] OT: Garage door mayhem

2021-08-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Did you post this on your website? I've got one garage door sensor that
has been on the fritz for a couple years, but we only use the wall mounted
button on that side of the garage so we just hold down the button and force
it closed.

Our sensors have red LED to indicate their state. LED on steady = normal
operation, ready to go. Blinking = blockage in the optical path signal
(usually leaves that blow in). The one not working has a dark LED, so I'm
not sure if the sensor has died or the wiring is the fault, or ??

Re: [MBZ] OT: Garage door mayhem

2021-08-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Did you think of trying to put a hood over the emitter or the sensor, such
that they would be shielded as if nighttime (but still be able to see each
other)? I have an old SLR film camera that started producing terrible pix,
my father figured out it had a light leak, found and plugged that light
leak, and restored it to perfect picture taking operation again. This saga
reminds me of that problem / solution.

My big tip: Be sure you have the right torque values for all the
fasteners. My '85 wagon was non-turbo, but I mistakenly used the turbo
engine procedure and the torque spec is far higher. I twisted off a

think I was able to use a hardware store bolt for the interim and keep the

Good idea, and good to know that diesel fuel won't run down into the

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] 606 ip timing

2021-08-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On the peach parts forum, one guy said that he would find TDC (and be able
to reset the pointer) by filling that cylinder with motor oil through the
injector hole. Take that injector apart, remove the nozzle and holder and
all the guts and use the body of the injector to plug the hole, then shove
a clear tube over the end of the injector so it stuck up above the valve
cover a good bit. Fill up the injector and the tube so you can see the oil
move up and down as the piston moves, and then you can move the crank back
and forth to find the high point for the oil. Stop there, set your pointer.

Next, drain / suck out all the oil, probably end up with a real mess down
the exhaust manifold so you may have to figure a way to drain that oil so
it doesn't kill the catalytic converter. Replace the injector guts and put
that back in place.

So if the pointer got moved, but the pump didn't ever get moved, then most
likely the chain is now stretched and the pump is late. So if you just

Yes you need to pull the vacuum pump, and the nut on the end of the IP

If you go that far and pull the IP, the oil seal (big o-ring) on the

ABS light on is probably one of the wheel / axle sensors, or the wires
connecting them. My '87 wagon had that light on when I got the car,
figured out the wheel sensors were good but the insulation was falling off
the wires. Replaced the wires from the wheel into the first connection in
the body, and all was good again.

So is there a VIN tag by the windshield? Weird that there is not plate in
the door pillar, wonder if someone removed it? Stolen at some point?

How rusty is it?

Yeah I was remembering something like that follower on the inner end, but I

OK so that follower is motivated by a separate shaft that runs parallel and

not going to be a concern here, problem is most likely at the outer end in

2021-08-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
His finger slipped and put that 2 at the start of the price, clearly he
must mean $500 for that turd. Bad trans, AC not working, missing interior
panel on rear hatch, broken fog light cover, window not working.

It's white and it's a wagon but the good part ends there.

Is the passenger side really locked? Maybe it is getting partially locked,

Took me about an hour to do this job. Both the old pin and the pivot arm
were worn out, so both needed replacing. I probably could have re-used the

replace the alternator pulley with the overrunning type (OAP) to reduce the

Re: [MBZ] W124 window gremlins

2021-07-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
My idea for the fix is to use wire that has very fine copper strands and
silicon insulation, so they are very flexible. Cut out the old harness for
about a six to eight inch section that bridges the accordion hinge, and
crimp in the new wires, so that one set of crimps is inside the body and
the other set is fully in the door.

Friend has a pretty new VW Jetta, probably about ten years old or so, and
it had a similar problem with electric windows. Suspecting the wires in
the accordion joint, I opened up the driver's door and found the problem
there. What impressed me was that there was a socket in the body, and the
door wiring harness plugged into that socket. Pull out the connector,
remove the door panel, and it was easy to see that one could replace the
door harness as a unit, including the part that flexes and fails. I'm
pretty sure he bought a replacement from the dealer.

No longer has bearings, it's just the arm with a steel sleeve inserted, and
then it rotates a big metal pin. Weird. As far as I can tell, one cannot
purchase this as a kit or assembly, the arm, the pulley wheel, and the pin
are all sold separately.

I'm going to try to tackle this job later today or maybe tomorrow, as the
arm has become cock-eyed and is making a horrible shrieking noise. Unsure

[MBZ] OT The Vax

2021-07-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
So if the Wuhan Red Death vaccine doesn't protect against infection, it is
meant to lessen the severity of the infection, and a person who has been
vaccinated but becomes infected can be a spreader...

Why are we still worried about wearing masks? If person A is worried about
death from the WRD, they get a vax. If person B is not worried about WRD,
they don't get a vax. Why do we need masks? The virus is endemic, and
will continue to spread (masks may have helped a little but certainly did
not stop the spread). Hospitals are not in danger of being overrun.
Plenty of ventilators / supplies / options.

Re: [MBZ] OT residential air conditioner issue

2021-07-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
When the AC is in operation, on my AC, the cold A coil in the air handler
will produce a lot of condensate dripping from it, as the warm air hits the
cold coils. There is a pan below the coil, which has a drain outside the
house.

Perhaps your drain is plugged, so the water has found another route?

Periodic monthly maintenance here, during AC season, is to put a "pan tab"
into the drip pan and drain line, to keep fungus from growing and plugging
up the line.

Re: [MBZ] Okie shop flooded

2021-07-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Hope you get that figured out, sounds pretty miserable. Are you allowed to
dig out a big pond / drainage area? I'd think about that, create a nice
big pond, and then all that dirt that is dug out can be used to build up
your levees and such to keep water out of the shop. May need to use some
ancient Egyptian technology to get your elevations correct.

Not a solution to flooding, but have you thought about pouring a concrete
floor in the shop?

2021-07-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've got some ad blocker extensions for FF, but that's it.

The issue is that some websites just never load properly. I'm not geek
enough to explain it, but I suspect that newer browsers like Chrome and
Edge can do more tricks and tips, and some websites are written to use
those features, and they are not written to be "backward compatible" to
also work with the older browsers.

Some of these are online retail sites, some are social sites, some are news
sites. Not very many, but happening more and more often.

Grey market import, VIN is 123.190, so non-turbo motor. Too bad it is also
an automatic.

Yes, smaller euro-spec bumpers both front and rear.

Crank windows front and back I think? Probably a manual sunroof too.

Looks like no AC compressor under the hood? No AC may be exactly why the
car is for sale in Floriduh...

really matter how fast the order gets here.

Agreed, it seems to me that a wiring short in the door hinge accordion
joint is a prime suspect. Have a short in the left rear window on The
White Whale that tried to strand me with that window down. Had to have
someone hold the switch in the up position whilst I flexed and wiggled that
bundle of wires to get the window back up, so I could get home to fix it.

However, if a lot of stuff is buggered up by previous "mechanics" then all
bets are off. One may spend a lot of time finding all the "fixes" done
previously and correcting those in order to get the system back into
factory spec.

Re: [MBZ] OT Electric Vehicles On Collision Course With Reality

2021-07-02 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yeah, another point, brought up the late Dr. Marshall Booth, is the road /
fuel taxes. He argued this for the "grease kit" fad, that people brewing
their own fuel were avoiding the fuel tax at the pump, which pays for
roads.

Some states are trying to address that with increased registration fees for
electric cars, but I'd like to see an apples to apples comparison, of all
the state taxes collected at the pump, vs. the delta between the
registration fees for electric vs. fossil fuel vehicles. If 6% of the
vehicles in CA are EV, then are they collecting 6% of the road fuel tax
equivalent?

[MBZ] OT Electric Vehicles On Collision Course With Reality

2021-07-02 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Robert Bryce testified before a House committee yesterday on the subject of
electric vehicles.

https://docs.house.gov/meetings/CN/CN00/20210630/112853/HHRG-117-CN00-Wstate-BryceR-20210630.pdf

Robert is one of the country’s most knowledgeable experts on energy, and I
encourage you to read his entire testimony. Here are some highlights as
summarized by him:

* I’m pro-electricity, but I am adamantly opposed to the notion that we
should “electrify everything” including transportation.

* EVs are cool. They are not new. The history of EVs is a century of
failure tailgating failure. In 1911, the New York Times said that the
electric car “has long been recognized as the ideal solution.” In 1990, the
California Air Resources Board mandated 10% of car sales be zero-emission
vehicles by 2003. Today, 31 years later, only about 6% of the cars in
California have an electric plug.

* The average household income for EV buyers is about $140,000. That’s
roughly two times the U.S. average. And yet, federal EV tax credits force
low- and middle-income taxpayers to subsidize the Benz and Beemer crowd.

* Lower-income Americans are facing huge electric rate increases for grid
upgrades to accommodate EVs even though they will probably never own one.

* This month, the California Energy Commission estimated the state will
need 1.3 million new public EV chargers by 2030. The likely cost to
ratepayers: about $13 billion.

* Meanwhile, blackouts are almost certain this summer and electricity
prices are “absolutely exploding.” California’s electricity prices went up
by 7.5% last year and they will likely rise another 40% by 2030. This, in a
state with the highest poverty rate and largest Latino population in
America. How is racial justice or social equity being served by such
regressive policies?

* I also talked about resilience, saying “Electrifying everything is the
opposite of anti-fragile. Electrifying transportation will put more of our
energy eggs in one basket. It will make the grid an even-bigger target for
terrorists, cyberthieves, or bad actors. It will reduce resilience and
reliability in case of a prolonged grid failure due to natural disaster,
equipment failure, or human error.”

I also highlighted the myriad supply-chain problems with EVs. Citing work
done by the Natural History Museum in London, I said that electrifying half
of the U.S. motor vehicle fleet would require in rough terms:

* 9 times the world’s current cobalt production
* 4 times global neodymium output
* 3 times global lithium production
* 2 times world copper production

I concluded by saying:

Oil’s dominance in transportation is largely due to its high energy
density. That density and improvements in internal combustion engines and
hybrids assure that oil will be fueling transport for decades to come.
Powerful lobby groups want Congress to spend billions on electrification
schemes that will impose regressive taxes on low-income Americans, reduce
our resilience, and increase reliance on China. That’s a dubious trifecta.

Yeah, last summer I put some test refrigerant in and got out the sniffer,
and no sign at all of leakage from the evap. I should probably test it
again now, just to be sure.

[MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Finally got hot enough for me to decide to fix the AC in the '95 E300 I
bought from Dan a couple years ago. Took all of an hour, if that, to get
the compressor out (front seal was leaking). After removing the wiper
washer fluid tank and loosening the serpentine belt, I had easy access from
above to get all four bolts loose, remove the manifold connection, and also
the electrical connection on top of the compressor.

And then OCD takes over, and I spent about 5 hours cleaning off the
compressor, carefully opening it up, carefully taking it completely apart
and replacing every seal and o-ring, and using the proper PAG-46 oil
filling it back up with oil. There was some nastiness on the valve plates,
kind of burned looking, like maybe the compressor was run low on oil or
something. If this thing dies, I'll have to spring for a new compressor I
guess. Rebuilt two other compressors and never saw anything like this.

The nice thing about these Denso compressors, 10PA-15, is the only special
tool required is a belt wrench or a chain wrench to hold the clutch while
you loosen the front nut, and then a shaft seal sleave to cover the
compressor shaft splines as you press the front case back on with the new
shaft seal.

Popped that back in, replaced the filter/dryer, then vacuum and fill the
system up. Took me about 8 hours all together, but ICE COLD AC is now back.

Only weird thing is that the recirculation function doesn't work. Press
the button and the light comes on while you hold the button down, but as
soon as you let go, the light goes out. Not able to troubleshoot that yet,
could be a bad switch I suppose or might be the PBU.

Re: [MBZ] 642 slow crank

2021-06-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well if the battery is charged and passes a load test, that leaves the
connections to the starter and the starter itself. Check that all the
connections are clean and bright and tight, don't forget the ground strap
between engine (or transmission) and the body.

On SWMBO's '96 Infiniti, it started cranking over slow and not starting.
Turned out that the starter is grounded via the bolts to the transmission,
and it is very common to get corrosion between the trans and the engine
block. The engine block is grounded to the body. I bought a few generic
battery cables, pre-made with ends already crimped on, and added more
ground cables from the starter to the engine block and then from the block
to the point on the body where the battery is grounded. About $15 in parts
and a couple hours later and that starter is REALLY fast and starts the car
with no problems.

Re: [MBZ] W124 rear brake hard lines

2021-06-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
That happened to me in my 123 wagon, a rear brake line rusted through and
bled out. I drove home carefully, and then put in a new line without
dropping the subframe.

You'll need to get the car home and then get underneath and evaluate the
situation. I'd also ask the guy to try to replace the brake line(s)
without dropping the subframe, maybe if he gets a little clever he can do
it for you.

Ideally you can get an extra long length of line that doesn't have the
flare and nut on one end, so you can easily fish that through the tight
spot. If the old line is still intact enough, tape a string to it before
you pull it out so you can use the string to pull the new line into place.
You'll then need to have the nut and the tool to make the proper flare to
finish the line.

Re: [MBZ] GL amp draw

2021-06-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
0.01 = 1/100 of an amp, that is acceptable and sounds like normal. 0.06 is
also not too bad.

Sure hope this isn't "fixing" itself while you are looking. Follow Jim's
advice, put some remote measuring device on it so you can close up all the
doors and hood, and then let it sit for awhile to see if it goes away.
Probably need to start the car up and drive it around, then park and leave
it alone to see what happens.

SWMBO's Infiniti has an alarm system that stays on high alert if anything
is open, like the trunk or hood. I was diagnosing a high current drain,
decided to ask online in a forum before I spent hours pulling fuses, and

the hood switch so the alarm system thought the hood was closed, and THEN
check the current draw. It was normal.

Re: [MBZ] GL amp draw

2021-06-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dig online first, figure out what the common reasons are, and try those.
You may get lucky. Maybe some computer somewhere thinks it needs to keep
working day and night. Radio amp staying on, or something easy like that.

Would be nice if someone made a meter adapter for those blade fuses, so you
could pull a fuse, stick the adapter in the slot, and immediately see if
that circuit is the culprit. What would be really madenning would be a
fault such that pulling the fuse will cure the fault, so when you try to
measure the draw on that fuse location, you get a normal (probably zero)
reading.

Did you see if there are any codes from any of the various systems?

There are probably some rubber parts inside that need restoration, likely a

Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 Air Conditioner issue

2021-06-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Sounds like you need a wiring diagram and the service manual for the HVAC,
ideally with the component locations. Maybe try searching on you-tube
university?

If you can locate the connectors, you can probably spoof the signal to make
the system work. For instance, the pressure switch is probably a simple
open / closed switch, so either jump the wires or separate the wires to
simulate the proper signal. The temp switch is probably a thermistor, so
you would need to know the resistance to substitute a resistor, but if
there is a computer that is looking for a variable resistance, that
probably won't work.

However, getting it fixed properly will probably require the refrigerant to
be removed, so if you don't have that equipment, take it to someone who
does and get it done right.

Was the switch located up high to keep it out of the spring floods? Or
