The AWD vehicles I owned (320ML) had no freewheeling of any wheels at any
time. Same with the current Subaru. The donut wheel/tire is for limited use
- just enough to get you to a tire shop, and to be driven at a low speed.
I don't know what the tire diameter difference tolerance is, but I can see
the tire shops not replacing one tire for liability reasons - they don't
want to be replacing differentials.

It's more of an issue with aircraft engines where an overhaul can start at
$25,000 and go up, and where it's quite likely that an engine has been
sitting for too long.
That having been said, I did see one airplane that had been sitting for
15-20 years be started and flown out on a "ferry permit" for it's annual
inspection at an airport 150 miles away.

Unless the cam is sitting in the oil, I don't think the engine design makes
much difference. There is a lot of pressure on the cam from the followers -
when the rust comes off it leaves pits with possible sharp edges. These
will spall the followers and the cam in time. How much time depends on how
deep the rust was. YMMV.

Yes - "Camguard" - but you have to use it before the engine sits for a long
time. I use it in our cars because we only drive them every other week or
so. I also use it in the airplane because I never know when it might be
down for more than a couple of weeks.

Re: [MBZ] Hasn’t been started in in some time, but ran fine before. 1976 Mercedes Benz 240D - $5,499 (St Petersburg)

2022-05-04 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Starting a car that has been sitting and having its engine being "OK" are
two different things. One of the big killers is rust on the cam from the
oil having drained off. The rust grinds the cam followers shedding metal
into the engine. Yes, it's running, but for how long before it
self-destructs?

2022-05-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
When you need 800 to say 1500 feet at sea level, 8000 is a lot of runway,
even at 7000 ft. I flew into Los Alamos once in a C172 - interesting
airport - one way in, the other way out - the mountain was too high on the
west side to climb over on departure. I was also surprised at all the 65 -
85 HP NA aircraft parked there - Cubs, Champs, and Ercoupe, etc. 6000 feet
of runway seemed fine for those old low powered aircraft.

Make that Extreme Simple Green -
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Simple-Green-5-Gal-Extreme-Aircraft-and-Precision-Cleaner-010113405/301277024
It's OK for aircraft, shouldn't hurt your wheels. I use it with one of the
air powered siphon sprayer guns and hot/warm water. It takes the exhaust
residue right off the belly of the airplane.

Re: [MBZ] Truth On Repairability

We have a Kenmore fridge, top french doors, bottom freezer. THe ice maker
died and was replaced twice under warranty. THe next time it "died", the
warranty was expired, so I messed with it and figured out that the switch
that keeps it from dumping when you open the bottom door - with a bit of
jiggling things it was working again. Hasn't been a problem since (looking
for wood) - 8 years now.

Re: [MBZ] 16CLS63AMG - 39k miles - $33,500

2022-04-14 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
You're missing the point of it. It has nothing to do with the longevity of
the car, nor your pocket book in any way. It is meant to reduce the amount
of gasoline burnt that isn't propelling the car. Simply lowering the total
amount of gas burned, not reducing your gas bill or total operating costs
for the car.

So is he trying to receive ADS-B to feed FlightAware? It should be a
standard Linux WiFi setup - IIRC you have to edit a txt file with your WiFi
SSID, p/w, etc. It depends on how the OS is configured. I use one to
receive ADS-B in the airplane and feed the info to a navigation tablet. In
this case it is the source of the WiFi and the tablets connect to it. (

Mine has been hands off for so long that I don't remember much about how to
use it.

That's a reasonable price in today's market. Aircraft prices went up at
least as much as used cars, if not more so. That engine might go another
2000 hrs before it needs an overhaul, if it's flown regularly.

BTDT, but in a small vehicle. The owners manual for the F150 says to
replace all five tires every 7 years regardless of tread wear or condition.
Being cheap, and not seeing any cracks in the sidewall, and since they live
in a garage most of the time, I'll wait until next year (10 yrs since new)
to replace them. I just replaced the 9 yr old original battery today as
preventative maintenance.

IIRC, the cylinders were replaceable iron sleeves in the block, held in
place by the head. They would crack resulting in no compression. It
wouldn't run on only three cylinders. We overhauled it twice, then he
bought a new 1968 Mustang fastback, which he still has.

Our Amazon drivers seem to be the best of the bunch around here - they
always leave the package where I specified - on the shelf beside the front
door. UPS and Fedex are all over the place, including once leaving my box
at the intersection between our street and the joining one - 400 feet from
our driveway. Amazon and USPS do the best, most consistent job here in the
sticks.

I ordered some tools, checked the delivery status on Tuesday evening at
6:45PM, and it said "delivered to front porch at 8:10PM" - amazing ability
to predict the future, however, the package never arrived. This was DHL.
Got a refund and ordered from another vendor.

[MBZ] OT - new fangled vehicles and battery replacement

2022-03-09 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I'm thinking it's time to replace the original battery in our 2013 F150,
just in case it dies when I'm away from home. The question is, do I need to
maintain 12v to the car while changing batteries? If so, how - via the
lighter socket or juggling wires with another battery as I change them?
I guess I could try to RTFM, but it's easier to ask here ---

Hmmm - they are dinging the cars for recalls - which if executed, should
have resolved the issues by now, making the cars "bullet-proof" Mercedes.
Of course, the rest of the issues might not have surfaced yet.

Re: [MBZ] Shop door

2022-03-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
My neighbor poured a four inch concrete curb like mound along the base of
the wall so they can't get to the bottom screws. The corrugated nature of
the panels makes it hard to fold down. Now that the horse is out, he thinks
he's protected.

Doesn'
t work too well when you live 15 miles away from the hangar, and don't go
there every day. He was un-insured to boot.

A neighbor of ours had all his tools and the three bladed prop for his
Cessna 210 stolen one night by thieves that removed the screws from a panel
of the sheet metal on his hangar. Instant door.
