Re: [MBZ] newer
...I find the newer cars easier to work on and maintain Please elaborate. Is that because they have better diagnostics, or, being newer, have less failures to correct?... They do have better diagnostics plus they do have fewer failures. On the MBWorld website where there is a large base of W204 owners, there are now more and more cars that have passed 100K miles with only normal service. Right now, the big failures ($$) are the Electronic Ignition Module in the early cars (from 2008, all models) which is the unit that unlocks the steering column when the key is inserted. When it fails the car is flatbedded to a dealer for a minimum $1K bill. This is NOT a diy repair. Yes, this is an electronic failure where the key and key slot fail to communicate. The other one in W204s is taillights getting dim which turns out to be the undersized single taillight ground wire melting because the original spec was inadequate. There is a repair kit for this or an owner can bridge in a heavier wire in the connecter. Mine is OK so far, perhaps because I have upgraded to the 2012 LED taillights, requiring reprogramming the rear SAM. There have been more than a few 4-Matic trans leaks, I think where the FWD shaft exits the RF corner of the trans. The 7-speed automatic and related FWD bits now share one case. All in all, these mostly warranty repairs add up to far fewer than in any of the last four new MBs I have owned. BTW, my 1985 190E 2.3 was the all time warranty queen and the dealers hated them. Re: [MBZ] post 1996 DIY
I'd like to know too. Maybe this just applies to scheduled maintenance?... Better define scheduled. My 2008 is no different than any of the previous years I have owned. Exceptions will be electronic items indentified by OBD2. Also, the 7-speed automatic which is now serviced at each 37.5K miles with it's own fluid and with no dipstick, the level on a refill is determined by the temp of the fluid. Oil is synthetic and MB says 10K is fine between changes although I do it sooner with my Topsider sucker. Things like oil changes and all filters (oil, air, cabin air) are all done by me. Brake pads are easier now and last much longer, many owners getting more than 50K before a change and many are switching over to ceramics which eliminate the black dust with no reduction in brake performance. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Ditto. Best wishes and here's hoping you get to detailing the C-class sooner rather than later. What's the point of life, after all, if you can't mess around with old cars? Alex.. Thanks. I can hardly bear to look at. My first car task will be the replacement of the RF tire (Bridgestone DW, new last fall, now with a blown out sidewall) and repair of the gouged 18X8 AMG wheel which occured when I hit a city owned snow chuckhole on 2/22. After dark, 37 degrees and nobody around. I got the spare on with the usual difficulty since the jack had never been out of the spare tire well. I thought I was faced with a wheel replacement ($1250) but it looks like my dealer's wheel guy can fix it since it's so close to the edge. I've had one of my 17 winter tires (OE wheels) on the car so I could drive it. The 28 1/2 year old 944 needs a little dusting off too but it's been on a battery maintainer since last September so it's mostly ready to fire up. .Yeah, does anyone know what happened to Woger? Dan On May 9, 2013, at 3:17 PM, clay wrote: Roger has gone missing. He is no spring chicken and I have not seen him since summer. clay. My absence since 2/22/13 has not been due to any actions, disputes or anything else here so credit can be taken The fact is that I have been among the missing because of a colossal health crisis that very nearly resulted in my death. After 12 years my cancer has returned for which I am now under re-treatment. I've had two surgeries, the second of which ended up causing a huge problem and the first of two two week hospital stays (at Swedish First Hill/Seattle) and both of which started as UTIs and progressed to near septicemia. After the first one where I was declared cured and discharged to a two week rehab center stay, one week later it all came back and I was admitted to the ER with a 103.3 temp for which someone my age is a very big deal. I was headed down the plughole but after being connected to everyline in the building and being seen by a parade of specialists, after two more weeks I was once again sent to the same rehab center for another two week stay. The most awful thing about this adventure is that since 2/23 I have been cursed with an indwelling catheter which has effectively ended my former life for the time being. So, I've missed all the MBCA and PCA events which I always attend. But, there is a fix for this which is called a Suprapubic catheter (google it) which will eliminate the urinary catheter and end the infections that have made life hell for the last three months. But since I had some heart damage during the last infection I am required to get a surgical clearance from my Cardiologist first. So. I overnighted last night in the hospital after the installallation of the first of two stents to open up some blockages I didn't know I had. No after effects at all except from lying on the table in a cold room for three hours while wires etc where maneuvered around in my main pump and I feel quite normal. The wrist entry was used instead of the groin entry which made things easier for me. When I finally logged on to check emails there were 742 in my inbox and I've been deleting most of them but there are too many to delete all at once which I hoped to do. RLE I am not done with this yet but when is finished to the point that I can become active again I am looking forward to cleaning up my C300 which has not had a bath since late February. Re: [MBZ] Nokian
...I concur with Jim Cathey about Nokians. We are running Nokian WRG2s on our '95 E320 year round... I agree. I bought a set of WRG2s back in 2007 to mount on my 2WD C300's unattractive OE wheels and I put those wheels on when snow is in the forecast. Having used Blizzaks previously, it was obvious that the Nokians are superior. Unlike the Blizzaks, the Nokians are quieter and have better wet/dry traction and can be a year-round tire. I think it's a big mistake to buy winter tires based on price alone, particularly when they are on their own set of wheels. Of the three tires mentioned, the Conti DWS has had good reviews in the tire tests. Other Contis (SuperContact etc) have poor reputations for noise, ride quality and a sidewall failures. But they are cheap and for some unknown reason are OE by Mercedes. I removed mine before delivery of my present car and was lucky to get rid of them on CraigsList. But, Conti has a newish tire called the DW (not for winter) which has had excellent reviews so I took a chance on a set for my 18 AMGs and found them to be quiet and smooth riding, better than the Bridgestone RE-050A PPs I had fitted when the car was new. ..I did not take into account that new cars are sold with garbage battery. No need to have another garbage battery go in... I don't think they are. My 2008 C300's production date was Sept 2007 and it's AGM battery is still operating normally. One of these days it won't be and likely with no warning. That's what happened with my 2001 C320. One morning it wouldn't crank fast enough to start so I gave it a one hour charge, got it going and headed to the dealer for a replacement. $110 or so installed, as I recall. With a warranty. Long ago I did get ten years out of a Sears Diehard in my 914-6 and when it became slow to crank after a month of inactivity, I replaced it. The original German battery in my '78 300D failed at just under four years so it got a Sears battery which lasted another five years when I sold it. For instance Rogers favourite car, the 944 uses an Audi/VW engine, so you can go to Porsche to get bits or go to VW and get the same bits in a VW box... You are thinking of the wretched 924. The 944/968 use Porsche designed engines, entirely different and for good reason. Re: [MBZ] 50 CAR PORSCHE COLLECTION
In re: Wilton's museum visit last week, I sent an email to my friend PR asking if this might be the people he sold his '67 911S to and here is his reply Roger, It was the Ingram Collection in North Carolina. You know the son as The Road Scholars and The Air Cooled Guys companies. They are the best early Porsche restoration people in the country today by winning everywhere and the factory is sending them cars to restore for the personal collections of the family. Cam and his girlfriend were invited for Peter's (Porsche) 70th birthday and the company paid their way, etc. They were one of the very few that were from the US that were not execs in the company. They are also brokers now on Porsches. It is Cam Ingram and Kevin Watts that own the above companies. They are also personal friends and I sometime advise Cam on earlies (ex. engine finishes on the Gmund coupe for Peter in 2011) and help Kevin from time to time. Right now he is helping me find a 993 that is in excellent shape for a driver for me. However, the father Bob Imgram and his wife have the collection of around 50+ cars along with other things in a private museum that is excellent in a building they built for the purpose. All are either extremely low miles and/or top winners in the country. They primarily collect Porsches (Bob) and Ferraris (wife), but have others as well. They were the ones that brought those 16+ high end cars to the Charlotte Parade. Wealth isn't even the word here. It is old money down south. Re: [MBZ] washers
..That brings to mind a question: when are the headlight washers on a W124 supposed to operate?.. The old way was, the head or parking lights must be on and when the windshield washer is activated, the headlight washers give two swipes and two squirts. That uses a lot of fluid so the newer cars like mine only squirt the headlights (no wipers anymore) every tenth time the windshield washer is used. Re: [MBZ] W210 wagon
The seller was very willing to let me take it to a mechanic which I am arranging for Monday. I was concerned about known issues for that year and model (ie transmission, head gasket etc.) Should I be concerned about major maintenance work needed at 97K like timing belt. In addition is that a reasonable price if everything checks out. I need to invest in new tires so that cost has to be condidered too. While I am asking what tires would you suggest if I get the car?.. Since it's a W210, rust is a designed in feature. Have the front spring perches examined for it. The 5-speed auto needs fluid changes on schedule but beyond that they don't have a bigfailure history. Since the engine is a V-6, the head gasket failures of the older inline sixes are no longer an issue. The engine uses chains to drive the cams and single balance shaft. The spark plug change interval is 100K miles and there are two per cylinder. Twelve plugs, twelve coil packs. Expect about 20mpg around town and the high twenties on the interstate. On premium gas, of course. BTW, this engine should use Mobil 1 0W40 according to MB and so extended change intervals up to 10K miles are OK. My 2001 C320 also used this engine and few of it's problems involved the engine. Since it's a wagon, cheaping out on tires is not a good idea because of load carrying. As has been pointed out already, a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified shop is an absolute must. Re: [MBZ] Atalantes
...Bugatti Atlantic coupe? Are you sure? Only four were built. Ralph Lauren owns one. One sold about two years ago for around 40 million dollars!.. I had seen the car in his garage here in Seattle and he sold it to someone in the UK who didn't pay so he had to go over there and collect. The problem with the car was the color combination which was two tone gray whioch reduced it's value a bit but I think it sold for $1.6 mil at the time. Just today I was glancing at some photos of Bill Harrah's Atalante taken at Pebble Beach long ago. His new bride (50 years or so younger as I recall) is also in the photos. The car was two shades of yellow. He died later that year due to a heart problem. I have never heard the number of four produced before. At another time at the Pebble Beach Concours, every remaining Royale was present in front of the club house, not judged but on display. Comand was MB's first version navigation system and perhaps the HVAC functions were displayed on the screen. Jaime knows all about this. As a nav system, it was DVD based and far from user friendly. An improved (very slightly) version showed up in the W211 but was still inferior to the competition's.. My 2008 W204's Comand (part of the Multimedia Package) is much better but has already been replaced by something else in the 2012 models. MB is still playing catch-up. [MBZ] MTBE in Washington?
Old Dieselhead, in his continued attempts (pitiful, really) to counter every single statement I make here with his quick-draw facts once again stumbles by failing to read his own references. And him a PHD, to boot. This all dates back a few years when I stated my scorn for ethanol in gasoline.. This time I claimed that MTBE had never been used in gasoline here. His triumphant post: ...Appalling lack of knowledge Read this report regarding the state of washington, where according to woger, MTBE was never used: https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/publications/publications/0009054.pdf See page 7 table. It shows half (49.5%) of the MTBE contaminated sites are in King county. (that is seattle) Well, first of all there is no table on page 7 but the real problem is that he didn't read the paragraph (from P7) below. Though the use of MTBE is not prohibited, the chemical has not been used as an oxygenate in Washington as extensively as it has been in other states. Well, I guess that's a fair statement since it says nothing much. There is only one documented use of MTBE as a fuel oxygenate in Washington ; however, it is likely that the chemical has been used in gasoline for other purposes in the state. Only one documented use. And what was that? This report, a glowing example of a government grant if I've ever seen one, does not say MTBE was in Washington's gasoline at it's hundreds, perhaps thousands of retail gas stations used by the public. And then at the end of his packed-with-facts report, he again goes off the rails again with another rant about the blessings of ethanol. What I'd like to know is where are all these leaking underground tanks of MTBE and how did they get there and for what purpose? Should I get out my tinfoil hat? I could also be ready for the Mayan end of the world coming up. Re: [MBZ] 3.5
..My point was aimed at branding, not engines. BTW, it is a 3 litre engine, not a 3.5. According to what I read and the dealer says, the 265hp Bluetec is a 3.5 and has been in use in Europe for a few years. The Bluetec introduced here in 2007 was indeed a 3.0, despite being labeled 320, at least in the W211. Re: [MBZ] modern power
It was Snook'd: If you get the 3.5 V6, it has 271 HP. (that surprises me!) And MB's 3.5 DI V-6 is now at 302hp. Plus a flex-fuel version for 2013 for the ML GL, not to say you can find E85 anyplace. The newish 3.5 Bluetec Diesel for the ML GL is at 265hp. Even the little 1.8 turbo four (Buyer's Remorse Version) is at just over 200hp. MB is working hard to meet the Obama gas consumption dreams. Re: [MBZ] Beltless
...So, let me get this straight. One belt drives the alternator. That alternator provides the electricity to run the electric motors, which turn the oil pump, water pump, compressor and power steering pump. And this saves horse power, converting torque into electricity and then back into torque again? The number of belts has stayed the same, the number of electric motors has increased by four, so I don't think any weight has been saved... How do you figure the belt count is the same? The pumps are driven by electric motors. When I referred to pumps, that's plural. There is more than one oil pump and I don't know how many water pumps there may be because the technical descriptions of the engine are not detailed enough, yet. Re: [MBZ] beltless
...Obviously because the _average_ load is much lower than the peak supply that the mechanical-only is capable of supplying. Enough so that it more than pays for the efficiency losses due to the double conversionThink of the oil pressure relief valves, for example. My guess is the real savings are on water pump and cooling fan... The electric cooling fans are up front with the radiators and oil cooler. ...But we still have cost, space, weight, and reliability issue to deal with... Re: [MBZ] beltless
1. Let us assume that the engineers want at least 50psi oil pressure at cruising speed, and that takes about 1/2 gpm. Let us also assume that a mechanical drive oil pump puts out 1.5gpm at that engine speed, and the pressure relief valve is set for 90psi. So the mechanical pump has to pump 1.5gpm at 90psi, while the electric one pumps .5gpm at 50psi. There's room for a large percentage savings in pump power... Let us just throw all that out for this engine. All of it. I recently read a too-short article (don't recall where for the moment) superficially explaining how these electric oil pumps operate in this application. After considerable testing and development, it has been 2. A mechanical drive water pump has to pump enough water to cool under maximum cooling needs at all times, the thermostat controls how much actually goes through the engine. With our electric PWM drive water pump, we get rid of the thermostat and pump just enough water to cool the engine. I bet the savings are over 90% in the winter, and substantial in the summer except when you're climbing a hill with the A/C on or towing a heavy load.
[MBZ] Beltless, the rest of it
After considerable testing and development, it has been discovered that the oil pressure and flow requirements for these engines (and others, presumably) varies considerably during various operational phases. So, you don't need 50psi all the time except when the engine is really working and most of the time it's less, sometimes a lot less, just maintaining the oil cushion in the bearings. Depending, I suppose on engine temp, manifold pressure, throttle position etc. all sending signals to the ECU which then varies the oil pressure by some quick change method. This was found to save power which eventually translates into economy. Since this is a dry-sump engine, the separate larger scavenge pumps operate at higher speeds because they pump mostly foam back into the tank. 2. A mechanical drive water pump has to pump enough water to cool under maximum cooling needs at all times, the thermostat controls how much actually goes through the engine. With our electric PWM drive water pump, we get rid of the thermostat and pump just enough water to cool the engine. I bet the savings are over 90% in the winter, and substantial in the summer except when you're climbing a hill with the A/C on or towing a heavy load... The thermostats are now electronically variable (my C300 is this way) and the electric water pumps (back to the Porsche) move just enough water to maintain temps, working with the variable speed electric cooling fans. My C300 has one big variable speed electric fan behind the radiator and nothing else. No aux fans any more. The C-300's swash plate AC compressor (still belt driven but no clutch) pumps enough R-134 to cool the cabin and no more. This is all progress and seems to be reliable. Re: [MBZ] Beltless
...Other than aircraft and stationary engines I can't think of any. Interesting question... It's the coming thing and whether it's going to be limited to high end cars is the question. The new Porsche direct injection 3.8 L 400 hp water cooled flat six in the 991 has only one belt which drives the alternator. The variable flow oil pumps (pressure and scavenge), variable flow water pumps and thermostats, power steering pump, and AC compressor (swash plate type) are all electric. Saves the hp to drive them thus improving fuel economy. Which trumps costs, apparently. MB's new 5.5 550hp Twin-Turbo V-8 uses the same technology and I would bet Audi has jumped on the same bandwagon. With that kind of power you can zip over to Costco in no time flat. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 85, Issue 13
...Speaking of the refreshed '14 E-classit looks like 4matic will finally be available on the BlueTEC (diesel) model as well, if the preliminary ordering info that was recently shown is anything to go by!.. The undisguised production model is shown in the 11/29 Auto motor und Sport. I read previously that every body panel except one has been changed. It's much more attractive with new lights front and rear. The 3.5 265hp Bluetec will be avaliable in the ML GL next year so maybe that engine will be available in the E. No spare tire, like all Bluetecs. I saw a '13 ML at my dealer this week and it's 3.5 DI 302hp engine is now E85 compatible. Heavily equipped at $61,500.
