You had said a small roof with a low pitch so I wondered if they could
get into the area close to the eaves. Thus the suggestion that you do it
from above if you are having new shingles installed in any event.

Ice dams are often caused by heat transfer from the living space below to the
roof deck. The solution seems to be to keep the roof deck cold. If you are
going to have the roof done anyway, cut back the deck above the side walls and
install barriers to keep the insulation from touching the roof decking. There
are commercial ones available but if that is not commonly available in AZ they
could be made from plywood or something similar. An inch of clearance between
the insulation and the deck should be sufficient. https://tinyurl.com/4hevsszd

You should be able to avoid having heat tapes.

I cut out triangular bits of paper in about 4 spots on the pattern so

The second time we renovated that bathroom, we used ceramic tile. The

Re: [MBZ] OT - Bathroom Flooring Question

2021-07-30 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
At 4 X 6, you don't have a lot to lose. Might as well try it and see how
well it works. If the existing joints are not tight, you might get
telegraphing of the pattern through the new vinyl. If you can stand
additional thickness, you might find some of the vinyl plank flooring
would be thick enough to avoid telegraphing and a lot of it is free
floating so you might not even need to glue.

that. The flooring is in good condition finish-wise, but is discolored from age
and UV exposure due to a skylight being in the ceiling. It was clearly put down
before the bathroom was finished, as it goes underneath the vanity, toilet, and
shower insert.

Here’s my question:

Can I simply put another layer of either 12” square or continuous flooring over
this without an issue? It’s clearly stable and could very well be original (40+
years). There’s no lifting, peeling or separation anywhere that I can find.

I’m going to be replacing the toilet at the same time, so I’ll be putting the
flooring around the floor flange so it will cover the whole area rather than be
butted against the edges of the toilet base.

Recommendations for material? I presume I’ll just put some sort of mastic down
with a V trowel to secure the flooring?

No need for anything fancy, just looking to make it look nice and consistent.

Thanks!

[MBZ] OT residential air conditioner issue

2021-07-23 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
My house has a basic HVAC system. We have a gas fired furnace in the
basement and central air installed with the furnace. The evaporator A
coil sits in the warm air plenum above the furnace. The Condenser sits
outside by the back door. The whole setup of furnace and air conditioner
is Lennox and about 5 years old - installed in the summer of 2016. The
previous furnace was Lennox and was installed when the house was new in
1981. The AC was added later in the summer of 1984. It worked fine and
was still working fine when we replaced it, primarily to get a higher
efficiency furnace.

The furnace sits near the south wall of the basement and there is a
rectangular duct  above the plenum on the unit to feed warmed or cooled
air across the basement from which smaller round ducts carry the air to
the rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors - 2 storey house. There is also a
rectangular duct that provides a cold air return to the vertical duct
that feeds air through the filter at the floor level to the blower in
the bottom of the furnace.

All very common - nothing unusual.

The current system appears to be working fine. The house is cool and the
compressor turns on and off like it should.

However, we are experiencing an issue that we have not seen previously.
The cold air return duct extends from the furnace north across the
basement ceiling. It also extends south but only for a couple of feet
and there are round ducts off of it to pick up air from upstairs. The
issue is that we have water dripping out of the rectangular cold air
return duct on the short side of the furnace. We do not believe we have
ever experienced this before. The electric hot water tank is below the
duct and we have a rectangular plastic wash basin about the size that
fits in a double kitchen sink sitting on top of the hot water tank. I am
emptying it 2 or 3 times each day with and inch or two of water in it.
That means it is a fairly significant drip. I can install a drain on the
duct to take the water down to the floor level and over to the sump pit
but I would like to confirm the source of the water. I have to assume it
is just condensation forming on the inside of the ducting.

I have looked all over above the cold air return duct and there are no
leaking water pipes or drain pipes that I can identify. I drilled a hole
into the cold air return duct near where it drips and fed a boroscope
(sp?) into it to have a look and I see a little moisture but no puddle
and no frost or ice forming on the metal ducting.

Water does not appear to be flowing down the cold air return duct to the
bottom of the furnace, or at least not significantly. The filter is not
wet except for maybe 3/4" on the one lower corner. I have pulled the
cover off of the furnace and see no evidence of water infiltration.

I may drill a couple more holes so that I can look into the plenum above
the furnace to see what the evaporator looks like.

We have had hot weather (for us anyway). Today it is 30C which is about
86F. It is humid today as we have had some rain in the past few days. It
has been warm throughout most of July but it was very dry as we had not
had much rain. We were experiencing the water dripping when it was dry
outside as this has existed for all of July.

We also run a dehumidifier in the basement to keep the moisture level down.

We have been in this house since 1981 and have never had this issue
before to our knowledge. Certainly not to the extent we have it right
now in any event. I don't go back behind the furnace all that often so
it might have dripped before but if it had done so at the level it is
doing now, it would have flowed out to where it was obvious.

Anyone have any thoughts on the issue?

Randy

no adverse reaction to either shot of the vaccine. There are likely

have had both shots of the vaccine should pave the way for me to do
things I might not otherwise be permitted to do. For example, we have
not been to see our elder son and his family since late 2019. We have
booked tickets to fly there in September. My understanding at the moment

Most of us older folks have had both doses for a month or more now. No
real side effects that I am aware of. I was a bit tired the day after
the 2nd dose. My wife felt a bit of flu like symptoms on the day after

I installed a central air conditioning system in my home by myself years
ago. It came with precharged lines and precharged A coil and compressor
unit. When I tightened the fittings on the lines onto the fittings at
the A coil in the furnace plenum and at the compressor unit it broke a
seal in the fittings and permitted the freon to flow. I did not have to
use a vacuum pump to evacuate air from the system. It worked fine for
about 4 years. Then we added on to the house and had to move the
compressor unit so it required longer lines and had to be recharged
after the lines were cut and extended by 10  to 15 feet.

Most utilities will coordinate pulling and replacing a meter without too much

I think you should be able to install a splitter box (which is basically a

then run new wires up to a new panel, or perhaps up to 2 new panels. A friend
has a set up like that in his house. He has 2 100 Amp panels. The ability to
have an actual 200 Amps likely depends on how big the wire coming in is and the
size of the meter box but often the issue is not so much the need for 200 Amps
as it is the need for space for more breakers etc. Who uses all of their
electrical stuff at one time?

You are likely not allowed to do it but if you can remove the meter from the
socket, then there would be no power feed into the house and you could install
the splitter box and a new panel quite safely. Then just push the meter back
in. Around here the meters are glass or now plastic covered bowl shaped things.
There is a ring around the outside that holds it onto the meter socket box.
Remove the seal and the ring comes off. Then you should be able to pull the
meter out if you wiggle it a bit as you pull. It just has male metal terminals
that go into female terminals on the inside of the meter socket box. To
re-install you just push it in tight to the socket frame and put the ring clamp
back on. Leave the broken seal on the ground under it so the utility company
thinks it fell off?

You should get permits for this sort of thing and/or hire an electrician, but
lots of people do things like this themselves. Just be careful and know what
you are doing.

A friend actually changed out his panel while it was live. He did not want to
pull the meter because he knew there was a broken part in the meter socket and
it would have to be replaced. He disconnected wires in the panel and taped
rubber spark plug boots over the ends in order to get them out of the panel and
into the new panel while they were live. I thought he was crazy to risk it but
he did it without killing himself.

Ideally, I would want to raise it up to the proper height as well as possibly

utility thing we would have to work out with them. From my experience with
utilities, it shouldn’t involve any changes to speak of as I suspect the

I guess my primary concern is if this can even be done. And how would they

That car would require an awful lot of work to make it anywhere near

If you repainted, re-chromed and re-upholstered it, then it would be a

Alternatively, you could hot rod it but that would take a lot of money

If they want to give me a locked-down machine, that can only access the

fine, and it may be appropriate for a variety of reasons. But if they

Just a guess on my part but Mercedes are (or at least were) much more
rare here than down south. That means not much in salvage yards and
probably few independents to repair older vehicles. Thus, you are likely
stuck using the dealer and the cost becomes silly. I am told that
Mercedes and BMW generally  have not brought big prices on auctions
around here because it is difficult to resell them for significant
dollars. Buyers are afraid of the cost of repair.

Bought the former wife a 2011 ML350 Bluie (W164), that thing was fast

that car, I did not drive it but a few times and I recall not being
particularly comfortable in it, something was just not quite right
about it.  It was comfortable enough, had all the gewgaws, but just
felt odd. Even after driving the 163 now for awhile it still feels a
little odd too, I think it might be the short wheelbase makes it kinda
twitchy, it does not feel quite as planted on the road as the cars
do.  I tried a GL350 before getting the ML350, it was a much larger
and substantial-feeling vehicle, but was too big for the wife to deal
with effectively for what she needed.  I think the ML is a good
compromise, the GL would be great for hauling kids and impedimenta and
towing and whatnot, but for all-around driving it is kinda big.

I don't know why they are cheap there, maybe the laws don't favor
older cars?  Or they rust out? Randy would be able to tell you.

I had my mother's 2008 Honda Civic with 22,000 kilometers on it, for a

so I went to the dealer.
They insisted on having the exact mileage so I read it out to him in the
drive through bay. He informed me that it needed an alignment. I told
him I did not really think so.
He did his best to persuade me and when I declined he insisted I sign a
waiver because it was dangerous not to do it and he did not want the
dealership to be liable.
I told him my son was a red seal licenced auto tech and I would discuss
the matter with him. Then he gave up.

[MBZ] As Traded

2021-06-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
It used to be here in Manitoba that the government would send out a
notice requiring that an owner bring a vehicle to a temporary setup on a
parking lot to have the vehicle inspected. They had technicians that
would give it a quick once over to ensure that the brakes worked and the
suspension parts were not worn out etc. If they found anything unsafe,
one had to either have it repaired and bring it back or, if the body was
bad enough, send it to the crusher.

A few years back they did away with that. Now, a vehicle has to pass a
pretty rigid inspection in order to be licenced. However, if you keep
the vehicle, it never has to be tested again unless the police see it
dog tracking down the road or something like that and require you to
have it inspected and certified.

The inspections on sale, as I said, have become much more of an issue in
the past couple of years. If a vehicle has rust holes we can no longer
just patch it to where it is sealed up. It literally has to be very well
repaired to the point where most folks could not tell it had been
repaired at all, or it does not pass. I guess it is the government's way
of getting the junk off of the roads but it is creating some hardship
for the poor as it is more difficult to find an inexpensive vehicle.

I always thought the dealers had to certify a vehicle in order to sell
it but that does not appear to be the case given the recent advertising
of vehicles, essentially, "as is". Some that I have seen are late model
trucks with an asking price of $40,000 so it just seems odd to me.

[MBZ] As Traded?

2021-06-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I am seeing more and more of the big car dealers around here advertising
used vehicles "as traded" meaning they won't include a current safety
certificate so that the buyer can get it licenced. Historically, one of
the reasons many folks went to a dealer is that it was an easy way to
buy a vehicle. It came ready to go. Now it appears that the cheap
bas*ards want to add on the cost of any required repairs to the sale price.

Are you folks seeing that sort of thing where you are?

Re: [MBZ] OT small towable backhoe

One of the fellows that I used to converse with on another forum bought
one like that and had plans to modify it so that it was self propelled
so that he did not have to tow it around his property. That seemed like
a great idea. He was very handy and had built all sorts of things.
Unfortunately, he passed away before he managed to do it so I never got
to see what he had planned or what he might have accomplished in due course.

looked at was the water
system.https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPi2hLpSjBRTs65U6That's the pump and pressure

https://photos.app.goo.gl/zyNUxCMYGi4eTMnv7
https://photos.app.goo.gl/6KqRFghXQA2DUe5P9This is the electric that controls the pump,
the one that actually runs the pump is the rear one, the front one is the pump for the
cistern. The "soft water system" as the previous owner says. That system is all
disconnected and hasn't been used in years.
It's hard to tell from the picture but the switch is about 8 FEET off the
ground. I can just reach it if I stand on the platform the pump is on. You can
also see that the switched being used is nestled right in the pipes...
Obviously a stupid location.
I'd like to move the whole dang thing down about 4 feet and out from the wall
about 2 feet which would put it about 2 feet above the pump and maybe a foot in
front of it. Do any of you geniuses see a reason I shouldn't? I'm going to
eliminate the soft water wiring entirely, we don't need it...
The pump works, in the third picture its turned off but I pushed the lever up
and the pump started. It built about 55# of pressure and shut off. When the
pressure gets down to about 10# it turns back on. We've got another pump so
if/when this one fails I can just swap over. It's loud but I can't complain
about it otherwise...

You might want to reconsider taking the paint off with the pressure
washer. Is it lead paint? I was involved in a case where the painters
had to re-landscape a whole yard because they stripped off old paint
with a pressure washer and contaminated the whole area with lead.

Another "exciting" story from our trip. I hauled home Dad's pressure washer yesterday.
Its a Troy Bilt 2700psi with a 175cc Briggs "Commercial" engine on it.
As with everything that sits in my dad's shed I had to evict a mouse nest. Then
put new o-rings in the sprayer part. Amazingly my Harbor Freight o-ring set had
some to fit. Also amazingly a generic hose washer with some sil-glide brake
lube sealed nicely, no leaks on either side.
The engine obviously wasn't stored well, no fuel flow at all. I had to take the
gas line off and blow carb cleaner through the inlet. The needle was covered in
a tar like substance. I didn't know gas in anything could smell worse than from
an old snowmobile. I don't remember when he got the sprayer but I don't think
dad has ever run it, so its probably sat 5 years or more.
The dang thing is so safety-ficated it's terrible to work on, plastic covers over the
carb, no choke control "it's automatic!", no fuel shut off... I got it so it'll
pop if I squirt some carb cleaner into it but it won't stay going. Of course you have to
have water in the pump all the time which is a PITA. Tomorrow I'll see if I can come up
with a fuel shut off so I don't have to lose all the gas every time I do anything. I
think it's not flowing gas into the carb again.
Oh well, ideally I'll get it going and use it to take the paint off the house before we paint it in
July. Its got a variety of nozzles from "delicate" for things you don't want to ruin to
"sandblaster" for things you do...

I know most of us on here are diesel junkies but he really needs to be
careful about buying a "big old commercial style diesel pick-emup". My
son is a mechanic and he used to work in a shop that did a lot of work
on F250 diesel trucks. The usual cost was around $9,000 when the head
gaskets started to leak. You cannot remove the heads without removing
the cab so labour is high and parts are expensive. Just routine
maintenance is high given the amount of oil they require and the cost of
fuel filters etc. If you avoid the routine service, then you have more
likely troubles. Plus, living in ND in the winter is a tough place for a
diesel. I know people in cold climates who basically leave the truck run
all day and park it in a heated garage at night.

He would likely be much better off with a gas powered truck.

as down payment to that truck. I would guess that the Rav would have fetched
pretty close to high book with both sets of tires and a nice detailing. V6

Short story long, the Yota was supposed to be serviced in ANC, but time ran

5/16 as scheduled (service manager said it could take 2 days to get the work

a few hours ago, I went to fuel up for the long drive ahead. Pulled up to the
pump and 87 octane is now $4.28/gal. Crazy. There are two refineries in the
state and the oil they process comes out of AK. Must be sympathy pains for
rising fuel prices on the other coast.

Not sure why, but the wildest drivers in big pick up trucks seem to
prefer black Dodge Ram trucks.

Indeed, 2016 Dodge Ram. Early enough he didn't have headlights on and blended

So, is the light bar for off-roading?
Is the usual way to attach that just to drill holes through the sunroof?

Randy who does not have that option on his old Benz

Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed

2021-05-11 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I have posted photos before of a set of ramps that I made out of 3/4"
plywood. I didn't invent them. They were a plan in a car magazine way
back when. I made a taller set back in the early 70's that I used with a
pickup truck to get it higher. In the 80's or 90's I made another set
with a more gradual slope to permit me to drive our then Taurus or Sable
onto them and not take out the front spoiler. The other advantage of
them is that being a more gradual slope, it is much easier for the car
to climb them.

One of my favorite things about a 240D is that it'll easily drive up onto a
set of ramps. Mine are also old Sears ramps. To get my Jetta up on ramps
requires 3 pieces of 2x6 to make a ramp so the front air dam doesn't hit.

A set of ramps is usually pretty easy.  Son just welded the muffler back on
the 190D using a set of green pressed steel ramps.  (Old Sears product?)
