There must be some sort of sealant that you could spray on tires to
protect them from UV if you are not able to park indoors.

Re: [MBZ] Maybe OT: wheel lug stud replacement

2022-08-05 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

You should be able to bang the broken chunk out with a hammer and punch.
You can likely get the new one in without taking the whole thing apart.
You may have to turn the hub to a point where you can get access to the
hole for the stud from the back.
You should be able to crank it in using a lug nut. Depending on the
length of the thread on the new stud, you may need spacers - washers
maybe - in order to pull it all of the way in.
Put the nut on backward so that you are pressing with the flat side of
the nut.
There is a simple "tool" intended for the purpose but it is just a sort
of bushing (essentially a really thick washer).

Actually as much as the rest of the car is rusting, I guess I'm not surprised.

I bought a new stud and nut at NAPA. Looks like it is sort of a press fit with
a knurled section to hold it in the hub.

I am hoping to do this without removing the hub. Can these typically be knocked
out with a hammer? And the new one pulled in by just tightening the nut?

If I have to remove the hub and buy a press I may just junk the car, it is really worth
that little to me (though having a press is on my "someday" list for the home
workshop).

Some folks we knew from out at the lake drove big station wagons. A

The reason was that they could not get all of the options they wanted
unless they opted for the car with the fake woodgrain on the sides (ala

Hunt around on there, lots of surplus metal cabinets. If you have a
university nearby, check if they do surplus sales to the public. At
Indiana University where I work, they sell stuff to the public but
also list a lot of stuff on govdeals.

When Owens-Illinois shut down their Charlotte plant, a couple of friends
got kept on the payroll to help clean the place out. They bought some
cabinets for themselves, with 3 more of the two door cabinets for my
parents and I. I believe I paid $5 for my 12" file cabinets, $8 for the
15" legal file cabinet, and $20-25 for the big steel cupboard.

A qt of yellow Rustoleum and my brown cupboard could be a lot less ugly
and a lot more weird looking. I mostly store oil and filters in it, so
yellow wouldn't be totally out of place. The bottom area is big enough
for 5 gallon pails of ATF and Hy-Tran under the bottom shelf.

He and his younger brother are very different people. My younger son is
a journeyman auto tech with a significant investment in Snap-On tools.

My elder son is an architect and is not much interested in any sort of
do it yourself mechanical work. He does do work on his home. He and his
wife have painted every square inch of the interior since they bought
the house about 5 years ago, and have renovated both bathrooms. They
have gutted the basement and have plans to improve it as a workshop
mostly. They have plans to re-do the kitchen next. They have also made
some fairly major changes to the back yard. She is a landscape architect
so no doubt felt compelled to put her mark on it.

I just thought that the tool set was a good thing to have around even if
he wasn't into rebuilding his car engine on the weekend. He buys new
vehicles and has them serviced at the dealer.

He shot it her house with a pellet gun, got arrested, out on bail. Stole her
deer cam she put up which pinged on it’s gps in his garage , cops got a search
warrant and found firearms in the house which he was supposed to give up as a
condition of bail, got arrested (after 10 days at VA psych ward to evade
arrest) and charged with receiving stolen property (an SD card from the cam the
cops found, the cam was gone), out on bail with no weapons charges. Had on a
gps and order to stay away from her. This was 3-4 weeks ago. She was terrified
he was going to come kill her as he had told the VA people that’s what he was
going to do. Nice.

Saturday night he murdered his 83yo MIL in an assisted living facility not far
from their neighborhood. Strangled her. Cops arrested/booked him only last
(Monday) night. He waived bail this afternoon so he’s in jail for awhile. Cops
all knew this guy was no good. Courts let him walk and this is what happened.
Criminals seem to have more rights than victims, which might not be a bad
thing, until it is. He’s a homicidal psychopath.

My friend has been terrified of this guy for months, I guess she’s lucky it
wasn’t her he came after.

shoulder to hold the blade, the shoulder has been deepening which allows the
blade to spin free. Each time that happens I grind the bolt a little thinner.
Someday I'll get a new bolt, they're still available from Snapper.

Made 1/2 lap of the yard and the drive wheel fell off. This thing uses a friction
drive system, apparently one time when I replaced the friction wheel I didn't get
the bolts all the way tight and wallowed out the holes. I'd lock tighted it together
but yesterday that gave up.So I upsized from 3/8 to 5/16" bolts, cut new
threads and put that together with locktite.

Finally got to mow the whole front yard, then had a flat tire. Found an
upholstery tack in the tire. Fix-a-flat in the tire managed to fix that one.

While fixing the flat my air hose developed a leak. It's a cheap Harbor Freight

We played a similar game with a Breville Breadmaker.  If my memory is
correct, it too was a thermister. Breville has moved on and you cannot
buy the part from them. I found a utube video where a fellow repairs the
same unit as ours. He ordered a comparable part from Digi-Key and
installed it. I followed suit and did the same thing. It worked for a
couple of months and then did the same thing. My wife bought a new
breadmaker - different brand - so I am not going to fix this one again.
I am not enough of an electronics guru to figure out why this happened
again after a few uses.
We have a Breville toaster oven that appears to have suffered the same
fate. Needless to say, we have given up on Breville appliances.

There are 2 thermistors, neither of which is called "condenser coil
middle thermistor" and the parts diagram is no help.  I have
downloaded the service manual and of course it does not specify which
of the thermistors is the "middle thermistor" per the error code.
There is some convoluted process to test whether a thermistor is
working or not, requires setting various temperatures etc. Incredibly
time consuming and fiddly. And I don't even know why a thermistor
would fail but there you go.

So I call LG parts number and after spending hours talking to a coupla
customer service people and waiting on hold to finally get transferred

finally get through to a tech support guy who is rude as hell, all he
wants to do is give me a number to call to get a tech to come out and
figure out what part needs to be replaced.  No thanks.  After going
around with him I finally tell him I have one question for him to
answer.  OK he says.  I ask him which of these parts is the "middle
thermistor."  He doesn't know.  He tells me I should replace ALL the
thermistors in the system whether it is 5 or 3 or 2, that is what the
tech would do. Right, that would probably cost me $500 for a guy to
dick around replacing a $23 part, or a $32 part if he would even have
it or know what to do, and he would charge me $150 per part plus labor
etc.

Anyway I ordered 2 thermistors off Amazon that should be here in a
week maybe, or sooner.  Bah.

This should not be this hard.  Lesson though, I will never buy an LG

A lot, if not most, North American cars of that vintage were pretty much
junk. The cars from the 1960's were better. We had a 1977 Monarch. It
was not a good car. Don't really know if the comparable Chevy was any
better but we test drove a Nova at the time and thought the interior on
it really looked and felt cheap. The Monarch was underpowered and didn't
handle all that well but the interior looked and felt fairly good and it
served us reasonably well for a long while. I think we had it for about
13 years. We bought it new and drove it while I was in university. It
became a second car in about 1984 and we finally sold it in about 1990.
We had very few issues with it. The only thing that was a bit
troublesome was the old style power steering. I think I replaced one
piece of it 3 times.

Worst. Trade. Ever. Smaller, worse-built, noisier, slower, with a
stumble off the line, and nearly the same (poor) gas mileage. One
would expect a 302 to be slightly thriftier than a 390, but such was
not the case. Probably handled worse, too.

Went to use it yesterday to polish some scratches out of the ML350’s finish.

Hit the switch and was greeted with a shower of sparks out of the motor vents,
accompanied by a rather nasty burning insulation odor. I wondered if maybe
there was some oil or lube that was burning off since it was new, so I
continued to use it for a few minutes without any change in it’s behavior.

I unplugged it and set it aside.

Took it back to HF today. Told the guy that I didn’t pay for the additional
“flamethrower” option, to which he chuckled and directed me to pull another off
the shelf to replace the one I was returning.

I was caught up with painting the kitchen and dining room today, so I didn’t
have a chance to test the replacement one. I’ll do that tomorrow.

the driveway, two beat up hot dog carts mounted on single axle
trailers and a tandem axle roach coach, and his clapped-out square
bodied GMC he drives and parks in the front yard. His garage is
chock-a-block FULL of everything you can imagine. His back yard is
worse, as seen through the Altima sized hole in the cinderblock wall.

While I was over in Cali doing the doctoring stuff hoarder boy had
some type of accident in his driveway that landed him in the hospital.
His neighbors, wanting to do the seemingly caring thing (but we all
know their motives were selfish….this dump sitting amidst the $1.0
million homes), attacked both the front and back yards cutting weeds
and bagging up all the garbage. Anything they thought hoarder boy
might think useful was neatly stacked in the back yard away from the
Altima hole out of view from the street.

The next day, hoarder boy was told of this Mayberryesque gesture and
he lost his mind. He immediately hired a chain smoking, heat-packing
dude living in an old Dodge pickup with a magnetic sign on the truck
door reading, “VET-SEC. Veteran Provided Security”. This guy sat in a
camp chair on the sidewalk out front of hoarder house, swilling Big
Gulps, with the sole purpose of keeping people off the freshly cleaned
up property.

Needless to say, the parents of the school children who walked along
that road to and from school were not keen on the idea of some sketchy
guy sitting on the sidewalk with a Glock on his hip. John Law visited
him a couple of times, but he remained on his post.

When hoarder boy got out of krankhaus, the VET SEC creeper was gone.
Hoarder boy had relieved him of the  watch.

Re: [MBZ] lawm mower tire

2022-06-02 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I used a commercial tire bead lube so that wasn't the issue. I just
couldn't get the tire to seat well enough or to get enough air into the
tire to help it seat. I had removed the valve stem and I had a decent
air tool ( actual name escapes me) for inflating the tire but just
couldn't get it to work even with the ratchet strap pinching the middle
of the tire.
I have to say I was impressed by the way the bead blaster inflated the
tire. Open the big valve, and "boom" it is inflated.

It can also be used as a portable air tank so not just a one purpose tool.

Somewhere, I saw information suggesting that the battery pack on a Kia
is warranted for 10 years.
However, I wonder about the details of that warranty and as you have
pointed out, what the decline is before it is considered replaceable
under warranty.

Randy

What are they warrantied for?

As I understand it, they don't "expire" they start losing capacity (which
reduces range) and eventually they will no longer provide a useful range to the owner of
the vehicle.

It also depends how they are used. If they are run to near-flat and then fully
recharged, that's harder on the battery life than running them down to say 40%
and charging back up to say 80% charge (assuming that meets your range
requirements).

Given the cost of solar panels, controllers and storage batteries etc.,
plus the electric car, it is likely less expensive to continue the

I wonder, if you install the solar system, suggested above, if it would

I have to admit that I would like to experiment a bit with solar but I
don't really need it and I am not certain what I would use it for or
what I would gain it I did. Unlike Curt, we have electric power at the
cottage and although it tends to be a bit expensive, it would take an

I guess I could use it to feed outdoor lighting in the yard but LED

My advice, for what it is worth, is to forget the car.
Enjoy looking at one if you see it on the street or at a car show but
don't buy it unless you have the financial resources such that you can
toss that much money away. There is no guarantee it will appreciate and
you won't be happy if you end up selling it at a loss.
You will need a place to keep it whether you drive it or not. It will
deteriorate to some extent whether you drive it or not.
You have a nostalgic whim to acquire it but it truly does not make a lot
of sense.

The boat is just the beginning. Once you have the boat, you either need
a boathouse to keep it in or a storage building at home to keep it in on
the trailer. Storing it on the trailer is likely not recommended for a
wooden boat as they need to soak up a bit of water or they will leak.
You also need a tow vehicle and the name of a boat builder/restorer to
call upon whenever it appears to need TLC.

There was a fairly decent boat for sale of a similar vintage out at our
lake last summer. It was a Lyman so the hull was painted white but it
had the mahogany front deck and side trim, dog house, etc. I could have
had it for around $10K but I do not have a boat house to keep it in or I
might have been tempted.

Interestingly enough, it had lived its whole life in our bay within
sight of our dock. It belonged originally to  some folks who had a big
triple stall boathouse with living quarters above. Those are not allowed
these days but grandfathered ones still exist. The boat along with the
property was inherited by their son. Unfortunately, he died a couple of
years ago at about age 80. The boat was acquired by some folks in town
who used it a bit but are now seeking to sell it. They aren't getting
any younger either. They would be in their early to mid 70's.

The boathouse was falling into disrepair and was torn down too. A sad
state of affairs.

Is this something more relevant to an engine like the Mercedes with an

My thought is that it wouldn't be as likely to pose a problem with
something like an old inline Chevy 6 cylinder engine. The cam and the
lifters are such that one would think any rust on the cam would wash
into the oilpan pretty quickly and a fresh oil change after running for
a few minutes ought to rid the engine of most of anything that was
rubbed off of the cam.

Randy

Interesting. Something I have never considered. I guess, if you are
correct,  in my example of the Chevy engine, it might be wise to pull
the side covers and some lifters to see what the cam looks like.

Re: [MBZ] Missing engine cover

2022-04-30 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I don't think it indicates anything too sloppy. If it were my car, I
likely would have left it off.  I probably would have kept it to put
back on if I was to sell it, but I would rather be able to see the
engine than some plastic cover with a company logo on it. My F150
doesn't have any sort of cover over the engine.  Modern engines do look
a bit messy with stuff all over the place, and I remain convince that
the only purpose of the cover is to hide all of that from the average
purchaser who has no real interest in what is happening under the hood.
I remember when I bought a 1986 Taurus, that the salesman pointed out to
me that things like the oil dipstick had yellow labels. He told me that
the only things that I should ever touch were the ones with the yellow
labels. Everything else was to be dealt with by the professionals. I
guess he thought I was an idiot but I assumed that it was he who had no
idea about what was under the hood.

A few years later, I had to change out the head gaskets on that engine
and I touched all sorts of things that didn't have yellow labels.

I'm potentially interested in a 2014 E250 Bluetec sedan at a small

it's a pretty color, but it's missing its engine cover. I looked at the
carfax report and it was last serviced at a Florida dealership. They claim
not to have it. The selling dealer is not willing to purchase a new cover
for $300.

My question is, under what circumstances should this car be considered for
purchase? In other respects it looks presentable and has decent service
history. But how do you lose an engine cover? And what is the harm done
driving around without one?

Good God Andrew, just buy the damned car if you like it.

The cover is just there to make the under hood area look neat and tidy
when deep pocketed buyers want to see under the hood. Modern cars have
hoses and wires running all over the place. They don't look tidy like an
old flathead that had one pipe leading to the carb and spark plug wires.

It serves no real purpose and I would cheerfully chuck it in the dumpster.

I kind of like it. There are things I would have done differently. I
don't like the red piping in the upholstery. It would look better in the
one tan colour. I don't really care for the massive console but I could
probably live with it. They appear to have done a nice job of it. I
wonder what it cost to do that.

Re: [MBZ] Interstate Gator

2022-04-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I think I would go back to the dealer and get it up on a hoist so you
can see if there is anything else that got whacked. Wouldn't think it
should be too expensive to have them button it up. Bad luck but
hopefully minimal damage.

A few years back I had a Honda Civic for a bit. Would probably still
have it if I had more parking spot. I ran over something in the dark in
a construction zone. Still don't know what it was - maybe a rock or a
piece of broken concrete? Maybe something off of another vehicle as it
sounded sort of metallic at the time. I crawled under to have a look the
next morning when it was light outside and could see no damage apart
from a couple of scratches on a cross member. I felt fortunate as it was
a cold wet night and I was probably 20 miles from home. The car ran fine
and steered normally and the oil pressure stayed OK so I felt safe in
continuing on home but it was a bit of a concern until the next morning
when I got a look underneath it.

It looks like it whacked the front air dam, of course, cracking it and
the belly pan has popped out on the drivers side in the front behind
the crack in the air dam.

Stupid me left the travel tool box I normally always carry in vehicles

I know the belly pan is held on with Torx screws but I don’t know the
sizes. I’ve walked the hotel property (there has been a hold up on us
moving into our Vrbo) looking for a ramp-like place I could pull up on
to be able to get underneath, but I suppose I will have to get very
creative ‘cause I see nothing obvious.

Or, should I just go back to the stealer where I just got my oil
changed and ask if they could button it back up? Or, look for an Indy?
Or buy a Torx set and look for a “ramp”.

I have a 2013 Ariens Deluxe 28. This fall I started it up to prepare for

the problem. Definitely need to drain the carb bowl before storage and use non
ethanol fuel if possible. Stabil only helps so much. Also take off the belly
pan and clean the friction plate, lube shafts. Take off wheels and lube axles
or else the wheels will rust to the axles- ask me how I know. Also there is a
grease fitting for the gears which is located behind the right wheel. Grease
fittings in the auger shafts as well and make sure auger gearbox has adequate
level of oil.

Wow! You really do a tune up on the blower. I have a similar sized
Ariens that is probably about 10 years old now. I run premium fuel
through it and that seems to help with the carb issues. I don't think
our premium fuel has alcohol in it yet. I had to clean the carb a few
years back but since I switched to premium, I have not had to do it again.

I’m surprised no one had jumped on the snowblower, as it had been listed since

One potential buyer made them an offer for $250 in the listing, which was a
dumb move. Of course they told him “No”.

And, unfortunately, you often have to be able to go get it right now. I
saw something on Marketplace a week or so back on a Wednesday at
breakfast time and contacted the vendor and said I would take it. We
messaged back and forth a little. He is out of town and I asked if he
came in to the city often so that I could meet him somewhere closer. He
said not really, so I agreed to go get it. I told him I couldn't come
immediately and he said I could come in the evening but that Thursday
would be better than that evening or else on Saturday. I said I would
come out on Thursday evening. I got his phone number so that I could
call for directions to his place before I came. Later that day, I got a
message saying he sold it to someone else. It was only a $50 item so I
don't know why he couldn't wait until the next day.

wondered if this was a southern thing and it's apparently called the "Carolina
Squat," you can google for pictures to see what it is. I had not seen this even a
year ago when I was last down south, so guessing it's a new trend.

Kids must be spending thousands to do this, I don't get the appeal and in fact
it seems dangerous as you would not be able to see what's immediately in front
of you.

I have long been of the opinion that modifications like that should not
be allowed. Even from the factory, I suggest that all vehicles on the
road should have their bumpers at the same height and that all lights
should be at a uniform height. Sports cars and semi truck tractors
should all be required to conform. If you want to lift your pickup truck
for off-roading, then you wouldn't be permitted to drive it on the road.
