Craig, thanks.
Ours was a far cry better than this.
Even before I had it painted it looked much better.

Body shop owner checked the NADA guide. The 300TDt is listed under classics :
FWIW:
$4450 (low retail) ; $7,775 average ; $11,350 high retail - now if the adjuster
will look at this for a guide.

Re: [MBZ] 82 300TDt -wrecked

2006-06-01 Thread Richard Murdoch

The front end of our 83 300D wagon took a real hit yesterday. My wife's
first comment was that had she been in anything else she might have been hurt.

Susan was driving about 35mph when a woman in a 2007 (yes, 2007) Lexus pulled
across the road; never saw my wife until they collided. Susan tried to turn
into a parking lot driveway so the left front corner took the hit but the other
car was moving hard enough to twist the front end of our car.

The front passenger side door opens but with slight resistance; oil started
running out but not before she cut the car off. I'm assuming it was the oil
cooler.

The other driver took responsibility for the incident.

We want to get the car fixed.

Any where I can post some pictures? We want to have it repaired jf we can.

This really puts a kink in our summer plans. One of our children is getting
married in three weeks and moving to Texas. My wife needs a wagon to do all the
wedding stuff as well as get our daughter's house ready to sell - all that 80
to 100 miles away from where we live. We were also planning to take the wagon
to Oshkosh in July.

Re: [MBZ] Wheel Fell off Sister's Car at 60mph

2006-03-18 Thread Richard Murdoch
John,
The loose lugs could be attributed to simple negligence, bad work habits, being
distracted and what else. But the used rim - I call that fraud.

Considering what could have happened they ought to buy your sister off with the
deal of a lifetime on a new car (which she could have serviced elsewhere).

But then one of the things my wife came to hate after being in real estate for
many years was the never admit guilt directive.

Subject: [MBZ] Wheel Fell off Sister's Car at 60mph

My younger sister has a 2000 Volvo which she brought in for service at the
Volvo dealership. They told her she needed a new rim, so she said okay
and paid up the $400 to put it on and balance (existing tire)

They let her leave. Down the road she hears a dragging sound and brings the
car back. She brings it in and they said oh, we forgot to put your sway
 bar on DUH

But the story gets better. They put the sway bar on and she went on the
highway. The car did a nose dive and she went off the road. She watched
her wheel roll down the highway lane.

State cops come, tow the car back to the Volvo dealership (not too bright)
and they say You must have had an accident, it wasn't the wheel's fault.

So the insurance company says they'll pay for the wheel and they will sue
the dealership (so my sister doesn't have to.) THEY hire an investigator
who notices that not only were the lug nuts not tightened but IT WAS A USED,
DEFECTIVE WHEEL. Now remember, she had paid $400 for a New Volvo Wheel.

So for those of you that remember my transmission overfill story from last
year- combine that with this and MAKE SURE you check EVERYTHING before
 leaving any dealership!!

I think the service managers are pushing the mechanics so hard to do 3x the
normal work in the same time- the result is, of course, human error. It
could have been a costly accident.

Already replaced, but have not tightened the oil cooler lines.

I was actually wondering about the oil filter housing. I'm not sure what all
is leaking, but if it is not too much of a job it would be worth doing while
I'm at it.

I had tried to line up the mount on one side using a drift pin, I'll dig out
another one to work both sides at the same time with the mounts loose.

I've also ordered the upper part of the turbo oil drain/return. I'm hoping
that that is the worst of the leaks.

Interesting that you mentioned Zen-like. I was thinking this afternoon
that tiredness and working with a light was not helping and I needed to put a
little more Zen (what ever that is) into it when I start over.

I learned most of what I know about auto repairs the hard way, at some point I
discovered what you all know -mental attitude made a huge difference.

My outdoor, in the snow, story is replacing the differential in a 49 Ford in a
foot of snow. I think someone bet me that I could not do it in less than a
certain amount of time. I spent more time under that car than I did driving
it. Would love to have it back though.

Decided to go on and order new mounts and hope I could get some advice on
getting the hole to line up. It is not off by much but I could not seem to
shove or pry the engine in the right direction.

I've replace mounts on other vehicles and swapped engines before but am I

Thanks to all who replied to my questions about replacing the oil cooler lines
on our 82 300TDt.

Bellsouth had been bouncing my mail even though the box was not nearly full --
thanks to the easy to search archives I was able to find your answers.

Finally got started but have only had a short time here and there to work on
them. The fittings were easier to break loose than I expected. (I had
started to remove the lines from a parts car and they were tough to break
loose.) Being able to get the hood straight up allows plenty of room for a
piece of pipe to lever the wrench for the initial turn.

I have the left motor mount almost off. Tjohn mentioned taking the motor
mounts off. I was thinking that only the left one needs to come off, right?

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines (more)

2006-03-03 Thread Richard Murdoch
Excuse the repost but my IPS knocked me off line right after asked about this a
couple days ago.

I bought new oil cooler lines for the 82 300 TDt from Rusty; they arrived
early the next day.

I loosend some of the oil cooler lines on the parts car and they seemed to be
very tightly torqued. Any Idea how to judge how tight to make them?

When I loosened the lower line at the oil filter it looked as if the the nut on
the fitting on the filter was turing as well. Hope I can manage that one from
the underside, there seems to be barely enough room to get one wrench in there
and turn it. Maybe best to cut the line and put a socket over it.

Also, I'm wondering if I can flush the oil cooler with clean oil while the
lines are off? Any more thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Can it be worked around the mount or will I have to take the motor mount loose?

Mike,
We used wood stoves from the mid 70' s to the mid 90's and rarely had to turn
on the central steam heat.

I cut a good bit of what we used (i.e. free or cheap).

Had to stop using wood because my wife was developing serious allergies.

The best stove we found for our purpose was a Kresno. It could be burned open
like a fire place or closed as an air tight stove.

Really miss using it.

We have a 4 year gas boiler and gas hot water heater. Looks like cost will
peak to 300 to 350 during the coldest months for our 2000 sq. ft old house.)

Re: [MBZ] '83 240D clutch won't work

2006-02-18 Thread Richard Murdoch
Gerry,
If the clutch plate is stuck to the fly wheel try jacking the back end up
enough to get the tires off the ground. Start the engine with the car in gear
and step on the brakes. (I had to do this more than once with an old Chevy
truck.)

I wonder if the pressure plate is failing since there was a problem before the
vehicle was parked.

My wifes '83 240D clutch won't release. I replaced the master and slave
cylinders, bled them with a pressure bleeder, and feel that the clutch is
depressing the way it previously has. Before this happened the clutch would
have to be depressed all the way to the floor in order to shift the
 transmission.
My wife had cancer and recently died. The last time she drove it, it would
not go into 3rd or 4th gear so she drove home in 2nd. The car sat for about
 a year after that.
When I recently tried to move it from the garage to the shop, the clutch
would not release. Thinking the disc might be stuck, I tried jerking the car
 with the starter without success.
I haven't been able to find anything about clutches other than maintainence
and inspection on the MB CD.

All help will be sincerely appreciated.

Not quite impossible. A friend had his 85 300D catch fire while he was on the

[MBZ] 123 vacuum challenges?

2006-01-15 Thread Richard Murdoch
Hello everyone it has been a while since I have been able to keep up with the
list and even worse what needs to be done to our vehicles.

Our 82TDt (300D turbo wagon) runs fine first time it is started after sitting
a while. If it is shut down briefly or sits for a short time it becomes very
sluggish. If I turn it off then wait for a bit with the key in the start
position it will usually be back to normal when I re-start.

Shut down has also become very slow.

I was thinking the two problems might be related to the shut down assembly. I
had already blocked off the locking system and replaced any rubber vacuum
connectors that were deteriorated.

Now to add to the question - I had to disconnect the AC compressor. Everytime
the HEAT was turned on the AC clutch or belt started screaming. The AC and
heat had not been responding to changes on the temp controll - but were working.

Can the climate control system be affected by engine related vacuum leaks?
Could the compressor have been cycling on and off and causing the loss of power?

I don't think the brakes are dragging. The the calipers and brake hoses have
been replaced.

Any thoughts will be appreciated, mean while I will dig out the MityVac.
Sincerely,
Richard Murdoch

Re: [MBZ] Steering column lock 82TDt

2005-09-18 Thread Richard Murdoch
Has anyone studied the workings of the steering column locking mechanism?

I have replaced the lock cylinder but the steering column lock binds when
the wheel is in a certain position. Once you hear that sliding shaft click
into place you know it will be hard to release it.

Turning the steering wheel to the right releases it enough to allow the key to
turn the cylinger but sometimes it takes a heavy hand. Because of a problem
with her right hand my wife cannot manage to do this at times.

I have a junk lock and have taken it apart so that I can see how it works and
have concluded that there are several parts that could cause the system to
bind.

Is there any one part that usually causes this?

I'm wondering about cutting off the end of the sliding or taking it out.

I would rather fix it.

I would appreciate any ideas

[MBZ] AC output smells terrible

2005-07-23 Thread Richard Murdoch
When we first turn on the AC on our 82TDt the air smells as if it is full of
mold.

Anyone know where this might be collecting and how to clean it?

A cleaner that is sprayed into the air intake did almost no good.

The AC blows very cold but seems to work only on the minimum setting; even
barely turning it back turns the cold air to hot.

[MBZ] air cleaner housing mounts

2005-07-12 Thread Richard Murdoch
Does anyone know why the mount that hold the air cleaner housing in place tend
to break?

The most recent event caused the breather hose from the valve cover to the air
cleaner to break as well. At first glance I thought a rodent had chewed
through the breather hose.

Might it be a bad motor mount shock?

TIA
