Re: [MBZ] 82 300TDt -wrecked
The front end of our 83 300D wagon took a real hit yesterday. My wife's first comment was that had she been in anything else she might have been hurt. Susan was driving about 35mph when a woman in a 2007 (yes, 2007) Lexus pulled across the road; never saw my wife until they collided. Susan tried to turn into a parking lot driveway so the left front corner took the hit but the other car was moving hard enough to twist the front end of our car. The front passenger side door opens but with slight resistance; oil started running out but not before she cut the car off. I'm assuming it was the oil cooler. The other driver took responsibility for the incident. We want to get the car fixed. Any where I can post some pictures? We want to have it repaired jf we can. Re: [MBZ] Wheel Fell off Sister's Car at 60mph
John, The loose lugs could be attributed to simple negligence, bad work habits, being distracted and what else. But the used rim - I call that fraud. Considering what could have happened they ought to buy your sister off with the deal of a lifetime on a new car (which she could have serviced elsewhere). But then one of the things my wife came to hate after being in real estate for many years was the never admit guilt directive. They told her she needed a new rim, so she said okay and paid up the $400 to put it on and balance (existing tire) They let her leave. Down the road she hears a dragging sound and brings the car back. She brings it in and they said oh, we forgot to put your sway bar on DUH But the story gets better. They put the sway bar on and she went on the highway. The car did a nose dive and she went off the road. She watched her wheel roll down the highway lane. State cops come, tow the car back to the Volvo dealership (not too bright) and they say You must have had an accident, it wasn't the wheel's fault. So the insurance company says they'll pay for the wheel and they will sue the dealership (so my sister doesn't have to.) THEY hire an investigator who notices that not only were the lug nuts not tightened but IT WAS A USED, DEFECTIVE WHEEL. Now remember, she had paid $400 for a New Volvo Wheel. So for those of you that remember my transmission overfill story from last year- combine that with this and MAKE SURE you check EVERYTHING before leaving any dealership!! I think the service managers are pushing the mechanics so hard to do 3x the normal work in the same time- the result is, of course, human error. It could have been a costly accident. Interesting that you mentioned Zen-like. My outdoor, in the snow, story is replacing the differential in a 49 Ford in a foot of snow. I think someone bet me that I could not do it in less than a certain amount of time. Bellsouth had been bouncing my mail even though the box was not nearly full -- thanks to the easy to search archives I was able to find your answers. Finally got started but have only had a short time here and there to work on them. The fittings were easier to break loose than I expected. (I had started to remove the lines from a parts car and they were tough to break loose.) Being able to get the hood straight up allows plenty of room for a piece of pipe to lever the wrench for the initial turn. I have the left motor mount almost off. Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines (more)
Excuse the repost but my IPS knocked me off line right after asked about this a couple days ago. I bought new oil cooler lines for the 82 300 TDt from Rusty; they arrived early the next day. I loosend some of the oil cooler lines on the parts car and they seemed to be very tightly torqued. Any Idea how to judge how tight to make them? When I loosened the lower line at the oil filter it looked as if the the nut on the fitting on the filter was turing as well. Hope I can manage that one from the underside, there seems to be barely enough room to get one wrench in there and turn it. Maybe best to cut the line and put a socket over it. Re: [MBZ] Diesel aircraft engines
I wonder how much re-engineering they would have to do to use the Mercedes CDI for aviation purposes? Tom, thanks for that link. That is well worth browsing, especially if you are interested in radial engines. There is also a page devoted to Norberg radials made for pumps. I would have believed that to be impossible until I saw it. The fire does not appear to have started at the alternator or battery. Not quite impossible. A friend had his 85 300D catch fire while he was on the highway. It was apparently caused by dragging brakes; either the flexible hose was clogged or the caliper was stuck. Another motorist put the fire out very quickly and there was not much damage. Richard Murdoch 82 240D 82 300TDt

If you are serious take a really close look first. Trunk lid rust is a typical 107 trait. That rust looks pretty advanced. Road dirt gets trapped between the outer skin and the inner structure and absorbs moisture, causing rust out. Best to just replace the trunk lid. Mine has been fixed twice and it starting to rust again. I think a new lid is about $500 then it needs painting. I couldn't tell for sure but it looks like the muffler has been That's the worst feature of ours. Every time I looked into getting it fixed it was just too expensive compared to what you'd get. [MBZ] 123 vacuum challenges?
Hello everyone it has been a while since I have been able to keep up with the list and even worse what needs to be done to our vehicles. Our 82TDt (300D turbo wagon) runs fine first time it is started after sitting a while. If it is shut down briefly or sits for a short time it becomes very sluggish. If I turn it off then wait for a bit with the key in the start position it will usually be back to normal when I re-start. Shut down has also become very slow. I was thinking the two problems might be related to the shut down assembly. I had already blocked off the locking system and replaced any rubber vacuum connectors that were deteriorated. Now to add to the question - I had to disconnect the AC compressor. Everytime the HEAT was turned on the AC clutch or belt started screaming. The AC and heat had not been responding to changes on the temp controll - but were working. Can the climate control system be affected by engine related vacuum leaks? Could the compressor have been cycling on and off and causing the loss of power? I don't think the brakes are dragging. The the calipers and brake hoses have been replaced. Any thoughts will be appreciated, mean while I will dig out the MityVac. Sincerely, Richard Murdoch

Re: [MBZ] Steering column lock 82TDt
Has anyone studied the workings of the steering column locking mechanism? I have replaced the lock cylinder but the steering column lock binds when the wheel is in a certain position. Once you hear that sliding shaft click into place you know it will be hard to release it. Turning the steering wheel to the right releases it enough to allow the key to turn the cylinger but sometimes it takes a heavy hand. Because of a problem with her right hand my wife cannot manage to do this at times. I have a junk lock and have taken it apart so that I can see how it works and have concluded that there are several parts that could cause the system to bind. Is there any one part that usually causes this? I'm wondering about cutting off the end of the sliding or taking it out. I would rather fix it. I would appreciate any ideas
[MBZ] AC output smells terrible
When we first turn on the AC on our 82TDt the air smells as if it is full of mold. Anyone know where this might be collecting and how to clean it? A cleaner that is sprayed into the air intake did almost no good. The AC blows very cold but seems to work only on the minimum setting; even barely turning it back turns the cold air to hot. TIA
[MBZ] air cleaner housing mounts
Does anyone know why the mount that hold the air cleaner housing in place tend to break? The most recent event caused the breather hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner to break as well. At first glance I thought a rodent had chewed through the breather hose. Might it be a bad motor mount shock? TIA
