[MBZ] Any Ideas?

2024-04-23 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
What's wrong with this one? I'm going to go check it out on Thursday. I'm
thinking the shop screwed up something with the glow plug wiring. Any known
issues with these W211 cars?

[MBZ] FBMP A Rant

2024-04-18 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Okay, so BIL is in Florida, so I figured I'd look for a car to have shipped to
the rust belt. Found a W210 two hours after it was listed. Cool. Message the
guy, no response. Just checked again, found the car relisted (twice), responded
to both ads, still no response. Grr.

I have messaged others locally about other things, and been ghosted. Whenever I
do get a response, even "It's been sold", I reply with plenty of gratitude.

Has the general population's IQ declined so much that people can't even respond
to an inquiry? WTF? If you really don't want to sell the car or whatever, don't
list it.

My distain for humanity is becoming more profound daily.

2024-03-31 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Mine is a newer facelift model, but I couldn't shift out of park one time. My
issue was the brake light switch. There are two sets of contacts in it, one for
the lights, and one as an input to the computer. Also there is a manual
override to get it out of park. Mine is a 2000 so this may not apply. Still
doesn't explain your no crank situation though.

I’ve noticed when I drive the ML550 (W164) aggressively, especially in turns,
it seems unstable, like the sidewalls aren’t holding up well, or they’re
breaking down and allowing the tire to “roll”.

The car has stock Michelins on it, so they’re not cheap or low quality tires. I
haven’t checked the date codes on them yet, but I will in the morning.

I’m just wondering if what I’m experiencing is normal, and maybe just a center

Re: [MBZ] remove sludge from w123 diesel

2024-02-17 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Black oil is to be expected. It's the nature of a diesel. Perhaps Mobil 1 is
not as high quality of an oil as it once was. If you do use a flush product, I
would probably pull the lower pan after draining the oil to make darn sure
there is no chunks of sludge that will plug the oil screen.

Here is a flush product that is allegedly very good. I've never used it. Follow
the instructions to a T.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07TK1BH1D/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_6?smid=A1EGOV5KZD8TMZ=1

I would probably use this though, just because it's from Germany.

Good Afternoon!
When I was adjusting the valves last fall I was surprised to see that there
seemed to be a slight build-up of sort of gummy oil around the valves. Was
not terrible but I could understand why it might not want to drain out in
an oil change.

I have heard some conflicting advice on using sludge removal on these
engines and was curious if anyone had any advice on this. There are some
products from Liqui Moly that look interesting. It explains why my oil goes
black instantly after an oil change. I have had the car for over 15 years
and it had only 68kmi when I got it. I have used synthetic oil since I got
it, mostly Mobil 1 15-50.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [MBZ] Back to 124 Daily Driver

2024-02-14 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Dan,

Traditionally this is the slowest time of year for shipping. Package volume
falls by 30-40 % over peak volume. This past peak was above average, but I've
seen times when volume was overwhelming. This past year was not. Current volume
is down perhaps 20-25% from the same time last year. That is a guesstimate, but
I believe it is accurate.
Remember, UPS makes most of its' ground profit from business to business
commerce. Home deliveries are less profitable and more of a PITA. Note also
that where I work is a consolidation hub. It is financially more prudent to
close or curtail operations somewhere else and route that volume through here.
They are doing that.

Take from this what you will.

My take?
Save your money, get out of debt.
A recession is eminent.
We (as a country) will have a better view of what's happening by the third
quarter. I *think* interest rates are not coming down soon, so .

Even though the seller said on purchase day that the oil had recently been
changed, I figured I’d change it, post long trip, and I’d have a baseline.
As I looked at the drain plug orientation I saw that the odds were great that
the oil would drain out and get on front end parts and stuff. Long story short,
I was right.
I know on my Dodge my dad had a quarter turn lockable handled spigot installed
(instead of the drain plug) that directed the oil downward vice jetting out
onto stuff.
Is there a know lockable handle spigot thingie that anyone has used in this
application?

I wish there was a dealer closer to me for stuff like this. I'm not driving 70

If I use the contact form for mbpartsource.com would they be able to ship me

On the way back toward Tulsa from OKC earlier today on the interstate where the
speed limit is 80, we had a guy in a pickup pulling a 2 car trailer. He was in
the left lane rather than where he should be in the right. I had to move to the
right lane to pass him after waiting for him to finally pass a line of cars. As
I am about half way up his trailer on his right, he proceeds to come over into
my lane with no warning or signal. I lay on the horn to alert him to his
mistake. I would have assumed he was not paying attention but he continued over
so I had no choice but to hit the shoulder. Now, him being in the right lane I
proceeded to pass him on the left. Again, he did the exact same thing. At this
point it is clear he is intentionally trying to either run me off the road he
cause an accident. Now he is in the left and I try passing on the right again,
same thing. This guy tried to run me off for a 3rd time. By this point I had
the wife call the highway patrol to report him, his vehicle tag and
description. I slowed way down to fall way behind and observed he attempted the
same with a couple of other cars.

This is a prime example of needing a dash cam. This seems like the perfect
scenario of my word against his without video proof.

This has been discussed before, but anyone have specific examples of units they
recommend, or what I should look for? I’m assuming the best approach would be
to snake a wire around the trim up under the dash and wire it to the cig
lighter? Or is there somewhere in the dome light area that has a key on 12 volt
source? What about a rear camera?

crumbling 2004 W211 4-matic station wagon WDBUH82J95X170353 with 410,000 km
on it (about 255,000 miles).

When cold, on dry pavement, the drivetrain has a nasty habit of
slipping/grabbing when cruising along. Under aggressive acceleration
there's no issue, it's just when you're cruising or
accelerating/decelerating mildly. It's like a shudder, with the engine RPMs
bouncing up and down. Once warmed up it goes away.

Is this a conductor plate waiting to say goodbye, or something in the
4-matic? He says it has been doing this for years.

Also, imagine my delight in seeing that it's not just my ancient 1970s MBs
that leak at the top of the windshield!

I’m partial to Epson and HP in that order. Epson has been doing inkjet on a big

If you’ve got any direct experience with something that might do the trick,

you have observed, they are permanent. I would suspect it showed up due to lack
of oil pressure after the oil and filter change. I'm not sure about Mercedes,
but most domestic autos have a "flood mode" where you can depress the
accelerator to the floor on cranking, and it won't signal for fuel or spark to
be delivered.

Subject: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Code 0522 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor

I just finished replacing all the coil packs and spark plugs on my daughter's
2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic w/110K miles to fix a few misfire codes that came on
(P0300, P0305 & P0306). Job was fairly easy and the codes disappeared and the
car runs great!
At the same time it was due an oil change so I did that too. I change the oil
every 3K and use Mobil 1 0W40. There are no check engine lights but now a scan
shows a "Permanent Code" P0522 - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor". Being a
"Permanent Code" I cannot clear it and see if it comes up again.
It is a bit of a coincidence that after changing spark plugs, coil packs and
oil change that code shows up?
Any ideas of a possible cause and fix. I used a BlueDriver Scanner if that
makes a difference.
Thanks,Bob K

[MBZ] OT Medicare Questions

2023-11-25 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Yes, I do realize the system will be bankrupt by 2025 or so. That doesn't stop
time, and I will be sixty five soon. I am employed and have what would be
considered a "Cadillac" health plan. I am in good health with reasonably good
genes and no bad habits (i.e. no smoking, no alcohol, no illicit substances) I
take supplements (vitamin d, ect.) but no medications. I almost feel guilty
pecking that out on the screen.

Anyway, I am getting inundated with junk mail, and spam calls regarding
Medicare. It is my understanding that I don't have to sign up, if I don't plan
on retiring at 65, and I don't. Is that correct? Also, stay away from Medicare
"Advantage" plans? What is an accurate resource to go for information?

Getting this correct, and not getting permanently screwed is important.

You're suggesting UPS wouldn't have "lost" it if they'd thought they'd actually
have to pay the full amount it was worth?

In UPS' defense, in the above case had the shipper properly insured the engine,

Subject: [MBZ] How do I get a reimbursement from UPS?

I have asked around for suggestions on what to do about my eBay/UPS
situation and have been told maybe going to the local UPS and talking
with the fellow in charge might help or taking UPS to small claims court.

Do you fellows have any other suggestions? Or maybe encouragement in what
I have already been told?

I bought an FJC R-134A dye/oil injector from an eBay seller at a very
good price, as shown in the first picture.

The seller shipped it via UPS.

UPS damaged the box, as shown in the second picture, and the smaller of
the two pieces which make up the injector fell out.

I contacted the UPS Damage Exception group at 1-800-742-5877 about the
damage and sent in the pictures they requested.

I contacted the seller via eBay's messaging system. The seller responded,
"Oh my. I'm sorry to hear this. I appreciate you contacting us. If
nothing gets resolved for you please let us know."

I contacted UPS some days later to find out what was going on and found
they had approved my claim a few days after I submitted it. They said
they had sent the seller some paperwork to fill out and when they
received it back, they would process the claim and issue the payment.
They apparently want the number of the account which sent the package.

I then again contacted the seller via eBay's messaging system and wrote,

Dear bluebutterfly81522,

I just called the UPS Damage Exception Group at 1-800-651-2352.
They said the claim was approved on 06 July. They said they are
waiting for you to fill out and send them the documents so they
can process and send out the reimbursement.

Are you able to fill out their documents and send the documents
to them?

When might you be able to do that?

I heard nothing. I called UPS; they heard nothing. I asked, "What happens
if the seller never returns the forms?" The lady replied, "Then the claim
will never be processed."

I then asked eBay to step in and help. Unfortunately, it was now after
the 30 days, so they would not refund my purchase price. I even went
through the "Report a Seller for a policy violation" process, and eBay
replied they had my report and would take care of things.

Several days ago, they sent me an email saying there had been no action
on my report, so they were closing it. I suspect the seller did not reply
to them.

So now what should I do?

Though the seller arranged with UPS for shipment, I was the one whose
payment initiated the process. It seems to me, then, UPS should be
obligated to make me whole because they were the ones who damaged the box
and lost the small part of the product, but they are very hard to contact
and the people at the Damage Exception department are not helpful.

I would probably try rubbing compound first just for grins. It’s pretty

Any thoughts about what we might check or trouble shoot before we call the

Yep. I only know of two or so mechanics within a hundred miles I would trust to
work on anything I own.

I rationalize tools and time this way. If I have to pay some shop $150 or so an
hour, I have to work 4 or more hours to pay this joker for 1 hour (don't forget
the 30% or so the government consumes through taxes) then I value his time 4x
more than mine.

I don't.

Even if it takes me twice as long, I'm money and time ahead. Plus I enjoy
working on things. I guess if enjoy what you are doing, it's more play than
work.

Subject: [MBZ] The Cheapest ML63 in the country LIVES!!!

Finally got it sorted yesterday, starts, moves, makes all the right
noises (which sound Very Nice!), and NO FAULT CODES!!!

You might recall I got this thing with an ISM fault maybe 3-4 months
ago. It was not shifting into gear and had been sitting at a shop
way out in the country dead for 2-3months. Bought it and managed to
get it started and in gear to drive on the trailer through some vudu but
then it would only start intermittently but not shift into gear. This
was a fault in the ISM that was not talking to the shifter, the ECU, the
TCM and who knows what else. It would sometimes make the proper noises
but not register a shift, or being in P so it would not start.

I made friends with a guy Todd in Columbia SC who has a shop Eurotech
Automotive and specializes in Benzes and other marques. He is a whiz
with the electronics and software. We tried to do a remote session into
the car using my XENTRY/DAS system but my software was too old to work.
I left my computer with him, he was going to upgrade it with new HD and
memory and latest software but the computer didn't like the memory so
that didn't work. He loaned me one of his computers and it seemed to be
working, at least the car would start but still not shift. Clearly the
ISM was bad. I had another ISM from the knackered ML350 that I put on
and we tried to program that one to match the car but it bricked another
computer he loaned me. Interestingly this was due to me using my chinee
breakout box with his licensed Benz computer but not the licensed
breakout box when we tried to connect to MB in Moscow (and he was remote
into my car with his system in his office or at home or wherever he was)
to get some software, it detected that and reported to Mama Benz and
they locked it out of their system. At some point in there he did
download a software upgrade from MB through MB Moscow and flashed the
whole car with that. I think that cost me $231 but whatever.

I went up there with the car on the trailer to work on it, he got MB to
turn that system back on and we went at it with the used ISM. He got
his Moscow buddy (who might work at MB Moscow, this aspect is not
exactly clear) to try to get it working. We kept swapping ISMs between
the original and this used one but still no joy, although the Moscow guy
(Peter) said they both seemed OK after various software upgrades. It
appeared that something on the CANBUS was not talking between the ISM
and TCM, suggesting maybe a wiring issue. Bummer.

I ordered a new chinee ISM off eBay to give it a try. Todd programmed
that one and yesterday I went there again. We messed with it some more,
he got the Moscow guy to go in and marry it to the car but it still was
not working and our window closed. He had another one in like 3hr.

Now I had not mounted any of these various ISMs to the car, just had
them plugged in, because taking/putting them off/on is a huge PITA.
They were all "working" it seemed but car would not start still, and the
shift indicator on the instrument cluster was not indicating the state
of the shifter. I said well, maybe I should put it back on and see if
that makes a difference. So I did that. And sometime this past week my
new Costco Interstate battery failed, would not take a charge. I had
taken another older battery (actually an MB battery that came in the
ML63) that supposedly had charge but it was kinda weak. We were trying
to get power to the car, had jumpers from a SLK that was parked next to
it, my charger, and a big jump pack he had, but none of them were
working very well, which probably was another aspect of the issue. Off
to Costco there to swap batteries (which took all of 5min, I love Costco).

Put the battery in, during our downtime I got the new ISM mounted, front
driveshaft back on (this is why the ISM is a PITA), transmission moved
back and rear mounting bolts back in (another reason why swapping ISMs
is a PITA), and fluid filled back into the trans (I had dropped the
valve body and conductor plate/TCM like 3wk ago to clean all that, check
o-rings on solenoids, etc), everything buttoned up. About 6 last night
Peter from Moscow dialed back in, messed with it again, and LO!!!
LIFE!!! Car started, shifted, and did all the right things! HALLELUJAH

So, transmission shift issue fixed, moving, running, all the right
things. Engine was running rough, misfire on zylinder 1, Todd had an
old coil pack laying around so we put that on the car (3min job on this
engine) and engine ran great! Went through all the modules, no faults
in anything except the sound system which the PO buggered up somehow.
Life is good and the ML63 lives!

So the learning from this was that everything needs to be

So messed with it a few minutes. This valve only has 2 ports, I
expected 3. I loosened the line that goes to the right side and a
dribble of fluid ran out but not anything under pressure with the pump
running. I loosened line that comes out of valve and just a dribble
also. So the issue appears to be with the valve. It has to have
something do with what appears to be an adjustment of some sort.

Here is the routing as near as I can tell. Line comes out of pump and
runs into the bottom of the left cylinder, which is inverted. There is a
line at the top of the cylinder that then runs down to the valve. The
other port appears to run to the line to the other side. I just figured
there would only be 1 line to the cylinder on the top, but I guess the
input is actually in the ram portion at the bottom.

Wonderful cars. The Camry of Mercedes. In the rust belt, they rust. Tennessee,
probably not so much. The facelift models (2000-2002, 2003 for wagons) are

Re: [MBZ] How do I drain/clean the brake fluid reservoir?

2023-09-05 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
I have heard of cleaning a coolant reservoir with oaxalic acid. Perhaps that
would clean it once it's removed?

There are a couple of choices here, none ideal:

1.) Bleed/flush the system to get rid of the old fluid in the front of the
reservoir; or,

2.) Remove the reservoir, drain, and clean it. You would want a new set of
rubber bushings/o-rings for the master cylinder where the reservoir attaches.

#2 has some potential for damage, as the plastic on these is probably pretty
brittle by now, but I’ve done it.

Yep. I have purchased almost all the adapters over the years.

If the grommets between the reservoir and the master cylinder are cracked and
old or the vent rubber is cracked and old you will find out immediately. Some
of us learn things the hard way.

Also, it needs to be cleaned after use. They say denatured alcohol is best, but
you can use simple green.

I use Motive bleeders.

No issues, but the hoses do age and need replaced occasionally.

I ditched my Speedi-Bleeder years ago when the cone washer failed on the
reservoir bottle and caused it to leak under pressure. I bought one of these a
couple of years ago and have been using it since:

Cheaper than a Speedi-Bleeder and is a lot easier to use. In fact, we just
flushed one of the W210s’ brake systems last week with it.

They really do help with bleeding brakes -- and there is no risk of
damaging a master cylinder seal.

The K400B is what is needed for Benz automobiles.

Alternator should put out around 30-35v ac with the mower running and the
regulator disconnected as measured at the leads coming from the stator.

Subject: [MBZ] OT Lawn tractor issues

A friend said her little JD lawn tractor battery kept dying and it
wouldn't start. I went by and put the charger on it for a few minutes
at 30A and got it to start up on about half a spin. I measured the
voltage with it running and it was at 11V but I had neglected to measure
the battery before I put the charger on it so I don't know what it was.

She mowed the yard and then tried to start it again after finishing and
it wouldn't do anything so the battery was completely drained. I will
probably try to charge the battery up fully on a low charge rate my
newer charger will do and see if it will come up to a full charge. She
did say she had used some sort of little charger and kept it plugged in,
but at some point got a divorce and it might have walked off with the
ex, in any case she didn't still have it. Having had to use that
suggests either there was some sort of current draw at rest, or that the
alternator isn't alternating. The ex had disconnected the front lights
to make sure they didn't draw it down and there was some other connector
that was not, I didn't try to track that down.

I was also looking at the parts diagram and it shows a little alternator
on the engine somewhere and a voltage regulator. I don't have a tester
to see if it is actually putting out voltage/current other than a VOM
which showed the 11V. Maybe I should charge the battery then see what
it is while running on a full battery.

https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sidebyside/equipment/67736/referrer/navigation/pgId/489092846

I'm thinking it might be either the alternator or the VR if the battery
is OK but she doesn't have a lot of money to start throwing at parts.
The VR is $18 on ebay so maybe worth getting one of those and trying it?
The alternator is like $100 so don't want to do that for now.

Thoughts?
