I'd guess they forgot to read the part about "beating plowshares into swords."

That said, they do own and use guns, for hunting. If they were being overrun,
perhaps the self preservation instinct would override any cognitive opposition
to do battle.

>How would an EMP event cause 90% fatalities?

Instant return to Amish living. No groceries, no gasoline, no natural gas, no
propane, no electricity.

With supply chain disruptions what they are currently, it's difficult enough to
get repair parts, etc. With no supply chain at all, what happens. This country
has an exceedingly thin veneer of civility, and with an EMP that would be gone.
Rural folks, with SKILLS, would fair much better than urban and suburban folks.
They would be decimated in less than a month. It will/would take a year minimum
for any infrastructure to be rebuilt. How long can one survive with no
food/water/medical care?

Even a regional EMP would likely take down much of the US electrical grid,
because it is all interconnected, and interdependent, with the exception
perhaps of Texas.

The Amish would survive. Everyone else, not so much.

Perhaps the 123 craze is fading? I am stating to see fairly decent 123 turbos

such a car would be listed for $4k or well above and sell quickly.

Find a blue hair car with that engine, and you have a car for a lifetime or

Crown Vic, Marquis, all boring but reliable.

The 3.8 V6 is probably the most durable engine ever. The 2.8/3.1/3.4 60* V6 was
prone to the intake manifold gasket failing, and emptying the contents of the
cooling system into the crankcase. Change the gasket *before* it fails with an
updated design, and Bob's your uncle. Don't, and replace the engine when, not
if, it fails. And yeah, changing the gasket is a PITA. The pushrods run through
the intake, so they have to be removed. There's a special valve spring tool for
it.

I was surprised to see that the input signal is pulsed. I would think the photo

I have seen sunlight play weird tricks on long range photo eyes at work. A few
days a year the sunlight would affect them. Installed some form of sun block

Third set of pads I have ordered off Amazon. First 2 were sent in the boxes, no
envelopes, with a bit of tape and of course various bits were missing, one set
had a pad missing and no sensors, the second had no sensors, the third had one
sensor inserted already in one pad but it was not the single wire type it had 2
wires. I sent back the first set, waited to see what would be missing on the
the third set so will send the second back tomorrow. Oh, there was another set
I ordered too but after UPS picked it up the box fell apart so that order self
destructed.

Anyway I had some wear sensors in the parts stash, I think I ordered like a
dozen of them at some point just to have around and they are cheap enough. So
that got everything going

Only one side was worn to the sensor, the other side had quite a bit of the
pads left. Weird. Discs looked fine.

Test ride the break petal feel was noticeably better but when I got home the
wear light came on again but then went out. That was kinda odd too but I did
not loose my breaks.

Anyway an easy job on the 163 if you have all the parts, same way as a 123 or
126. Takes longer to get organized and get the vehicle jacked up and tires off
then to do the actual job.

Re: [MBZ] OM617 motor mounts

2021-08-14 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
I was going to do a write up years ago. Tips? Hmm. Plywood or something to
distribute the weight under the oil pan. Remove the shocks from the engine
FIRST, so you don't forget. The shock shaft has two flats that take a seven mm
open end wrench. When starting the Allen head bolts into the mounts upon
completion, start them by hand, and perhaps even tighten them by hand. The mm
brackets are aluminum. 6mm Allen required. Don't take the transmission mount
loose if you're doing all three. Things can go cattywampus and it will be
difficult to put everything right. Do both engine mounts together at the same
time. If you need oil lines, now is the time.

M103 and M104 head gaskets start leaking oil out of the passenger side rear
corner at about 100k miles. IIRC, some (most?, all?) M103 engines came with
brass, not bronze valve guides. If he just changed the head gasket without
having the head rebuilt, that's quite an oversight. It's not worth what he
wants. Maybe $3,500. Maybe.

So yesterday truck sat for about a week at started right up as normal. It was
right around half a tank of diesel. I filled it up then made about a 30 minute
stop and it started fine but did seem to crank a little longer. This was with a
full tank. This morning it’s at about 3/4 a tank and it started OK but had to
crank longer than normal. It’s almost like it has an air leak when 3/4 full or
more. Strange. I got the kit to rebuild the fuel filter head so will probably
just go ahead and do that. How that I think about it, even before the injector
job it do recall a few longer than normal crank times on occasion, I just
thought it was due to bad injectors.

It's a simple solid cam follower at the other end, from what I remember.

Will start with checking if the pushrod is bent. Maybe try to eyeball down the
pushrod tube. I dont think the loose pushrod would really cause any internal
engine damage, unless the cam follower has been kicked out of place and is now
sitting at the bottom of the case (not sure that's possible or likely).

Thanks Allan. I gave Craig the same admonishment several years ago. I am well
aware of the risks. I haven't had an alcoholic beverage in two decades. Infer
from that what you will.

I plan on getting extremely adept with my right (non-dominant) arm and

Actually Randy, no. All of my neighbors are very cool with the live and let
live philosophy. I keep my property up, however I drive older, rust belt cars.
Some can be quite unattractive at times, but are mechanically sound. The code
enforcement officer in my town hasn't been able to enforce much in the last
eighteen months because of the government reaction to a virus. So, eighteen
months of pent up overzealous enforcement has been unleashed.

As I stated earlier, I procrastinated on getting plates, and that was the
primary cause. The mail is slow however, and they arrived today, after the cars
were gone. They are and were technically legal. Without running the plate, the
officer on hand wouldn't know that. My son informed him they were legal, but
Barney Fife wouldn't have it. I am grateful I was not home. The situation would
have escalated very quickly.

I am off for the next three months. Target one on my mission list is the only
emissions standard in the state of Indiana. Never underestimate the power of an
extremely passionate man, with too much time on his hands.

Towed off of your property? Or were they parked in the street?

Here there's a pretty good chance of a non-plated car parked in the street
being towed eventually. Never heard of it happening on one's own private
property.

Some HOAs have rules against having a non-plated car, boat/trailer parking, etc.

I think the day is coming where we will no longer own cars, you will
license/lease them, with various options and features enabled or disabled, just
like software. Used cars as we know them today won't exist. You'll simply
return the car to the dealer and they will reset the options and relicense it
to the next tenant. The other model will be short-term rentals (hours/days) for
people who only need a car occasionally.

Most people won't care, to them a car is a monthly payment either way.

I wouldn't know where to go to get a torque wrench calibrated.

And probably could not be done for the cost of a new one, if they are selling
at $15.

Enclosed info sheet claims 4% or better accuracy, recommends recalibration
every 6 months (I don't know if that assumes daily use or what -- it would be
unusual for me to use the wrench more than a 6-8 times a year, really.

You probably have T cell immunity from a previous cold. I could cite
references, but I don't have the time. Previously having OC43 can provide
immunity. There was at least one couple on the Diamond Princess cruise ship
locked in their cabin. He got sick, she didn't. I would boldly assume that it
was because she had prior immunity. That is probably your case. I would guess
probably 50 percent or more have some type of innate immunity without getting
an mRNA shot or two. I could get statistics and such, but most have made up
their mind, and wouldn't be swayed one way or another. Do your research, crunch
the numbers and make the most informed decision possible.

I know I have.

It is impossible to contain a virus that has become endemic. The OC43
coronavirus likely caused an epidemic in the mid 1800's. It is now a common
cold. That's how coronavirus' work. If they killed their hosts, the virus would
burn itself out (see "ebola"). They become easier to spread, but less lethal.
This particular virus will mutate to become another cold virus. Whether or not
the media and the politicians will admit that is another story.

Secondary assignment. Look up ADE, and for bonus credit look up Original
Antigenic Sin.

Subject: [MBZ] It’s hitting the fan

If you recall I mentioned a few weeks back about my company being sold. The big
worry at the time was this tracking software they are supposed to be putting on
our computers. That is the least of our worries. Today they started scheduling
people for calls today. One guy on our team got an invite and on the call they
basically let everyone go. They have had several of these today. Lots of people
canned. One of my team members got it this morning. Another one had a call this
afternoon and I heard he gets to stay till October. One other person said she
heard all employees will be gone by October. In other words, not a good day.

Health insurance and life insurance premiums will be going up very soon, if not
already.
I could give a reason why, but that is probably best addressed on another list.
Ask an insurance actuary.

They reviewed all the coverages etc which I can do online myself. I let them go
thru that and when done explained how this was a complete waste of time, I have
2 houses and 4 cars insured with them and the question I need answers is why
has the premiums doubled in the last 3 years. Their answer blew me away. They
said they discovered they have been undercharging in Oklahoma so they are
having to make up for it. They wanted TJ help us out by spreading the increase
out over several years and it will go up again next year also.

What the heck? I did go ahead and mention I have been shopping around and
found I could get better coverage for significantly less.

Received the renewal notice for Okie Acres. Last year they jacked it up from
around $3400 a year (which was up from about $2600 the year before) to $4300.
Renewal for this year is up to $5400. WTF??? That is totally insane. Never had
a claim with them, have 5 cars and 2 houses insured, lord only knows what the
renewal for the other house will be. I had to do a double take on the amount.
USAA is pricing themselves out of business.

I wonder if I should do quotes online or actually visit several agents in
person. Maybe one of those that sell insurance several different companies.

I see a mounting kit, 116-240-00-17 and the shock, 123-240-10-48, are those
correct?

I had both left and right shoulder rotator cuffs surgically repaired 11
years apart. The technology is much improved now. They tether the internal
stitches to a small bioplastic post that dissolves in six to nine months.
You are left with no residue of metal in your body and therefore no
residual irritation.

Actually my doc is very good about that. I had shoulder impingement in January,
and he could've recommended surgery then (bone spurs). He prescribed PT and had
I been more consistent with it, I may not have needed surgery now. Of course,
falling on my shoulder didn't help.
