THANKS ZEB!!!; DDUUHHH!!!; if the 2 cycle oil costs $1.50 a quart; ($6.00 a gal. 4 quarts) to get 2 more miles to a gallon; STUPID!!!; next time i see this guy; I'll tell him that, that 2 more miles per gallon; HA! HA! ; is costing MORE THAN A GALLON OF DIESEL! Steve

Any response to this idea?; I was told buy a 3/4 ton diesel pickup driver that he adds i quart 2 cycle oil to each tank of diesel; and that he gets about 2 more miles per gal.; (maybe the extra liquid adds to the mileage increase???) anyone have a response GOOD or BAD idea??? HI; I always used the Cheapest Antifreeze in all my vehicles, $6-$7 a gal.; thinking about using some good stuff in my Mercedes benzes?; was it Zerex 05??? or what is correct name of it? . OK for M.B.s? ; 79 240D, 83 300D, 85 300D. In my 88 Ford Ranger, always used CHEAPEST antifreeze, but changed it every year or 2; removed top bottom radiator caps, looks like NEW inside, OH, it has 219,000 miles on it(problem was sending unit on top of engine) Steve

About $1600 to change timing chain ALL? GEARS; does engine have to be removed to change lower T. gear on Crankshaft; if so maybe that is why the high price; crank gear is the highest cost but top 2 gears are only about $25-$35 each unless they have went up? thanks, Steve

Hi Allen; my tach. sender, amplifier , or as M.B. mech. calls Transducer was doing the same; intermittent working; got one on ebay; ok; thought well, i can't loose much; I'll tear into this; about an hour or more carefully removing the silicone/ i noticed 2 breaks in solder around 2 wires; i just re soldered all connections on circuit board; now works ok; so put it back in car been working for over a year now; But as 1 or both of the JIM'S suggest; it could also need a new capacitor or other small elect. part oh i did not put silicone back; maybe need to for heat or vibration issues??? Yes; what about 15-50 Mystic,(i was told it was Kendal,don't know, but don't want to start MORE OIL THREADS!!!) at under $40 for 5 gallons; having changed oil every 500-3000 miles or less; with $6.50 filters; makes for cheap oil change; i always have cleaner oil fresh filter; I enjoy working on my diesels also I need the EXERCISE! i also use Rotella 15-40 but it is a bit higher in cost Steve

got an idea what POS means, am i correct???; looks like the exact same, cheap paint color that Peach auto painting co. put on my 79 240D; Zodiac blue; would look beautiful if they put it on thicker than an Onion skin!!!; supposed to be sanded; yes they ALSO?!?!?sanded the alum. trim around rear glass some other trim; primed, must be ULTRA THIN; 3 coats of paint (NOT!) Jim!; maybe you can answer this about the diff. readings on the glow plugs; a 5.75 reading? ok? does this one have the shortest wire from gp relay? to it causing less resistance; maybe this one still ok?; and the .9 resistance one, ok?; the open one is not ok; the 470 ohms one; i ran into about this same reading changed it, don't know if bad or not; i don't change any glow plug unless it reads out of limits; i have extras, but will not change unless; shows way out of limits exhaust hangers; i don't use high priced Mobil 1 oil but i do put on new ex. hangers when they look hard or cracked; also; what determines if you need hard or soft compound on the hangers?; i try to get the ones with the rubber in the center, but maybe hard to find now??? any info Jim? thanks, Steve

Hi; my factory radio that works on off, better when cold; can't find any bad? solder connections; BUT now the other day while i was letting car run while i moved some other cars; I turned off the car BUT, RADIO was still on?!?!?!?!?!?; turned key on off but still on???; pushed antenna switch to lower, then tried switch again, now turned off stays off w. ign. sw. off???; i thought that these radios were wired to only work when key is turned on??? anyone heard of this before; still waiting on money to buy NEW C/D player! Hi; I don't want to start a trans. start trread again; i have a book here; Mercedes Benz. Technical Companion:with items taken from M.B.C.A. , the Star magazine (wich can be purchased from some parts sellers on internet; Maybe Rusty?) it has a page Automatic Transmission Standing Starting Modes it lists from 50- 90 on; i you need specs. a certain car; i will let you know what the Book says; i have 3 M.B. diesels this book is correct for them also correct for What Kaleb said !!! problem with alt. light coming on; changed the volt. reg., worked about 1 day; so the mech. changed the alt.def.; next alt. def.; 3rd alt. def.; young mech. said he found what was drawing the battery down; a SHORT in Radio; i said the radio always pulls some LIGHT SMALL current for clock memory; he removed clock had Battery checked, NO GOOD BATTERY; bought a NEW BATTERY NO PROBLEM EVER SINCE many years ago my brothers Volvo kept needing new alt.; after changeing 3; bought a new Battery no more problems??? [MBZ] 300D radiator pipe to fill tank broken off
Hi; is there a fix for the broken, small pipe on top of rad. that goes to plastic resevoir?; have one broke off; my 85 300D has a Metal one put in it; is that a fix or came that way new?; it was loose i put epoxy around it; still loose but does not leak any fluid; could a person buy a metal hose fitting tap, maybe pipe thread? to put new one in?? any advise is appreciated; thanks again, Steve also; anyone have a crashed radiater with a good top tank, large hose mount, upper rad. that is still there???
[MBZ] 300D radio on off problem
Thanks Randy Rich; better to buy cheap radio w. cd player in it my 85 has a kenwood radio w. a 5 disk changer in trunk(supposed to be 6 disk but one plastic disk holder broke HA!); this was wired thru the center balance switch;(i don't think this is the correct way, considering the radio has 4 sets of speaker wires for 4 sep. speakers)?? I rewired it all to get 4 diff. speakers separate bought some CHEAP speakers, sounds better than the cracked orig. ones need 1 plastic cd tray for the Kenwood 6 disk changer Steve

How to tell; my 300D started slowing down to about 45 mph top speed i turned off to check filters; yes i have most all parts to fix car in OTHER CAR!!!; I did remove main filter dump out; then clear pre filter; had black specks all around inside: i shook blew thru it enough to get home w. no more loss of power; OH! the night before i had removed the tank screen cleaned checked not bad at all; then i stuck my finger up in tank rubbed it all around to loosen up a small layer of sludge; only felt like thin layer???then the sludge went to pre filter, never had a pre filter so stopped up! hadn't had this car for long; changed repaired a lot of other items, but did not change the CHEAPEST?? the pre filter; i have used diesel additives also in tank; Steve

Hi; i took a CHEAP 3/4 IN. drive socket 1 7/8; put on grinder to take off angle, so it will be flat not slip off thin filter nut; maybe a person could find a perfect fitting metric socket, but mine works VERY good, didn't have to buy another one; workes on tank filter sending unit Steve

HI; anyone, ever had a radio problem; that on bumpy roads or when hitting side of console radio goes on off; i checked for fuses, loose connections bad solder joints on circuit boards; tape player had brokem rubber, but don't use anyway; maybe front panel has short or buttons bouncing around;;have diagram of front panel, but need to build up my confidence to open up HA! HA!; just use radio for my satalite radio only anyway; any advise would be greatly appreciated Steve

Hi Craig; Hi; yes i forgot to say center the wheel; put pitman arm in general direction; then stab Rectangle of flex joint on male rect. shaft of steering column; i have never used the centering bolt as i never removed the multi splined end of flex joint from gearbox; if multi spline end removed on st. box end you should use centering bolt screwed into bottom of gear box to center gearbox Steve

Levi; i am wondering the same thing?; are all steering boxes worn or all have play in them; remember to turn allen adj. COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO REMOVE PLAY; my M.B. ills. parts breakdown shows the gears meshed the other way!!; it is printed WRONG!!!; wider part of gears are on bottom, so must raise (counter clockwise) to tighten play; but TOO! much backing out will make the steering not return or feel really squirrely!! Maybe anyone have an idea of removing a bit of play by turning in Input shaft side to remove some play; i haven't tried this yet??? anyideas on this? Steve

My 83 300D got 24.2 combined 24.0 highway, turnpike mileage;; my 85 300D California model got 26.1 highway, turnpike mileage?; what is this about these cars supposedly getting 30-50 m.p.g.; my 240D (with new engine) gets the same as the 83 300D? Steve

I think the pitman arm shaft has 1 larger spline to only go on 1 way; i have changed gearboxes by myself;(not fun) put at least 1 mounting bolt thru use long ext. bar with socket, lift st. box up with left hand push 1 mt. bolt thru w. right hand to start 1 bolt; that will hold the weight, then the other 2 bolts are easy; if you leave the multi. splined end of the flex connector on gearbox, it should still be in alignment or close; steering wheel alignment can be made by equal adjustments on Both sides of tie rods, or removing St. wheel? I changed my loop glow plugs over to later pencil type; 1979 , just remove all the insulators the Squiggly resistance wire??? put plugs in hook wires on plugs; i had to have the Large plugs; later heads use the smaller ones, like later cars; didn't change the relay or anything else; Bosch had a kit with 4 glow plugs the wires with crimped eyelets? already on them, think at least 10 guage, heavy wire; also this cut the glow time in 1/2 or more; still working after about 10 years?? Hi; My 79 240D starts in 2nd unless accel. is pushed down all they way to floor, then downshifts to 1st my 83 300D works the same; starts in 2nd unless accel. pushed down to floor My 1985 works this way; Starts out in 1st (it is a Calif. model) not sure if Federal model is same? All three cars have a 4 speed auto. trans. Steve

Hello; What can M.B. or mech. do to a 240 long block to make it put out 60 more horses be about equal to a 300D??; i thought a 240 only had about 62? horses to begin with!!! Hi; i have a broken mity vac that is glued together??, unable to take apart ; junker not working; i bought a Sunpro brand, carried by Sears? most auto suppy stores; Brass metal you can order repair parts for them, overhaul kits for about $2.50 and new guages (Don't like the plastic lens on the guages cause they break easily, but all in all very good working unit! Hi; Sears sells a vacuum bottle for removing used fluids, under $18; it has a pump on top plastic bottle about a quart or more, not sure; i use for replacing power steering brake fluids; or if trans. is too full, use for that too; look at it carefully see that tubes fit snugly in rubber stopper, as i had to take one back as it fit loose Steve

Maybe you will get lucky only need connecter or small bolt lock nut for arm to flap not need the element; shop labor might be same to change v. element as to just replace the conn. peice on center flap?? LOTS of money saved by doing yourself! Steve
[MBZ] CENTER VACUUM ELEMENT REPLACING
Hi; i remove the glove box; center vents maybe the Inst. cluster; my hand is small enough to go thru vent holes; the vent holes let your drop light in to see what you are doing; if hooking up bracket to open center flap; i put small bolt lock nut leaving slightly loose for play mvmt. or you can buy the plastic, i think connector from M.B.; also put a magnet inside in case you drop the bolt or nut, or THE tools!; one of my cars still has allen wrench somewhere in there; if the vac element is ok, able to check with glove box out using extra length of v. hose, you are lucky just need the flap connector (ea. of my M.Bs had to have the center connector fixed, only one had a bad V. element also) that is lost or broken (original plastic M.B. part); my element on one car was ,diaphram broke so i just pried off the fuses,that's what they are called??? CLIPS that hold it on, some broke, if being careful you could get the clips off without breaking buy new diaphram cheaper, maybe rebuild, i used some clips from hdware store to put back on new element since old ones either broke or fell down?!?; then put vents back in , a bit of a job; but i think the hardest part is putting the rubber part back on the lower flap area first then putting back around the 2 vents, it is the pits!!!; actually now i think might be easier by pulling the dash off?!?HA! HI; 71 Ford LTD ; Mobil oil, NOT M1 no oil using or burning, about 120K mi 81 Ford LTD ; about 100K mi. 88 FORD Ranger ; 219K mi. very little or no oil usage ford oil then CHEAPEST ?-MART oil 79 M.B. 240D ; Mystic 15-50 oil, cheap little or no oil usage still breaking in??? 85 M.B. 300D Calif. model, with supposedly rebuilt engine(bought on E-Bay) 280K mi. Mystic cheap oil 15-50 ; very little or NO usage 83 M.B. 300D came with Rotella 15-40; changed a few times; probably changeling to Mystic 15-50 as it is cheaper ESPECIALLY BY THE 5 gal. pail; might stick with 15-40 rotella for winter??? or mystic 15-40??? I change my oil filter every 500-3000 miles, or sooner if i feel like doing something; at these change rates I can't see spending $60-$70 for M1 Good thing i know how to work on these diesels rebuild, as using CHEAP oil; SOMEDAY???, I might have to work on them Steve

Trained M.B. mech, INDY. $60 per hour + his parts were marked up 100% to 300%; maybe his world pac? co. is charging him too much or maybe i am just lucky finding CHEAPER prices? don't know; they usually say cheap parts, NOT as good Quality; LOOKING AT parts they are the SAME brand! ones I've seen; OH well, if i didn't have a small bit of mech. knowledge, i would have to find another Hobby anyone know of this WORLD PAC co. that you must HAVE A RESALE # TO GET PRICES OR PARTS?? and are THEY that much cheaper? maybe i could get resale # start a new business selling M.B. parts, as NO restrictions where i live out in my county Steve
[MBZ] RECHARGING AIR CONDITIONING ON 300D
Although getting cooler; i have recharge a completely low A/C unit for about $38 or less, if no parts are needed; using Freeze 12, last can was $6.59 ea.; anyone know of supplier that is cheaper than this?; thanks in advance for everyones help; hope I can help others also with my small bit of knowledge Steve

[MBZ] High perf. intake for 300D
Thanks guys for your input; when i bought car, it had a good turbo sound; noticed that someone had used wrong tool to replace air filter had PUNCHED holes in it, making the good turbo sound, but ruining air filtering qualitys, ha! ha!; so will save my money on this setup probably wanted it for same reason as my European headlights, or just for looks? 83, 300D, 85 300D, 79 240D all showed to use same f. filters???; 79 240D has a larger banjo hollow bolt; same problem as Andrew?; anyone know what the differences are? thanks, Steve

Yes, they are expensive; i paid $28, but they might have gone up? also; has anyone had experience with the new air filter kits ($149) that you remove the large filter housing, just have the cone looking filter in front of the Turbo; oh won't work on calif. models, just Federal Steve
[MBZ] REMOTE STARTER FOR 1983 300D
This idea sounds interesting; but; have gotten mixed responses from suppliers of remote starter devices; such as; Bulldog; won't work on mech. controled diesels only works on electronic injected diesels? in business 17 years can't be done $299 must have them install, no carry out $64.99; install yourself, but wiring diagram only goes back to 1990; after looking at wiring diagrams; the same color wires seem to work for most all years; for the cars wiring harness asked about delay in ign. mode was told it is adjustable; then when it times out it cranks engine, the $64.99 one is brand Commando ez 2500 looks like a few wires to connect to wiring harness; not a hard job to do i understand that other features won't work as M.B. has a vacuum system for operating doors, trunck, etc. ANY HELP or ADVICE IS APPRECIATED; THANKS, Steve

About jumping ac clutch; please unplug ac spade lug connector before applying voltage to test clutch; i applied voltage to + side with engine running, climate control on it burned a trace off my climate control circuit board; after a lot of other checking; finally found a blown fuse, on a/c?? or OVERLOAD relay under pass. side of dash; pull lower panel look (or feel up at right side) for relay; pull relay out check fuse, mine was blown; on 85 300D; not sure if yours has this overload relay or not; hope this helps a bit???; Steve another thing; it is possible to hook climate control UPSIDE DOWN, plug in; this will blow out your TEMP. control module
[MBZ] POST; 83 300D vibration problem
question about my new (used) 83 300D DIESEL M.B.;(189,000) miles had bad vibration; installed repaired rear c.v. joint axle on left side;($129.00) right side was changed by Merc. Benz. dealer, about 49,000 miles ago, so didn't change still vibrates; noticed tire( on same side) was REALLY STEPPED, so put NEW never been on ground) spare tire on it, still vibrates, tho not as bad removed drive shaft replaced rubber mount(rubber mount was cracked, bearing ok) bearing; Noticed when U joint straight, has flat spot both sides, but when bent slightly, seem like can't feel any extra play in it?; but joint runs mostly about straight;in car?, or does it?; rear trans. mount covered with oil, but not broken; MOTOR mounts might be bad though?; i need to check wheel bearings real close; SO any advise or help on this problem is appreciated; ALSO; best place to buy a good or rebuilt drive shaft, with good or new u-joint? cost?? It's been raining all day. If the rheostat in your 240 is the same as that in my 1983 300TD, it is a rather crude device with a coil of fine wire glued into a ceramic base in semicircular form, with a wiper arm that rotates over the coil. The adhesive gave up in mine last year causing erratic operation. Once I pulled the IC, the failed adhesive spilled out in a fine white powder. I reset the coil in silicone adhesive in the base and it has worked fine since. Peter Ferguson 1983 300TD
