Re: [MBZ] Civic

2008-05-21 Thread Sunil Hari
I love this list!

My dad bought it new in November of 1996, drove it for 6 years, then let me
borrow it for 5 years.

It is a 5-speed manual and has 135,000 miles. The car has never been smoked
in. I have full records for all major services. The timing belt and water
pump were replaced at 90K, new tires at 90K, all fluids flushed and filled
at 130K. I've done oil and filter changes myself every 5,000 miles with full
synthetic oil since 100,000 miles - prior to that, oil was changed every
3-5,000 miles by a shop. It burns zero oil. I recharged the A/C last summer
and it works perfectly.

Options - power windows and locks, power mirrors, cruise control. The radio
has integrated support for an iPod and the necessary cable is already
installed. However, if you want a CD player installed instead, that can be
arranged.

It gets 35mpg highway at 75mph, 40mpg at 60mph.

The emissions system (oxygen sensor, etc) is still under warranty through
Honda until 150,000 miles or November 2011, whichever comes first.
The crash damage that will probably pop up is from a crash in March of 1997
(yes, 6 months after buying it) - old man in a Cadillac crossed the double
yellow line and hit us on the front passenger side. No engine/transmission
damage. All work was done at the dealer using only new parts. Driven it
another 130,000 miles since then without incident.

As for price, I'd like to believe it's worth more than the private party
value just because of one-owner history, non-smoker interior, iPod support,
and full maintenance records. But I could be very wrong and misguided.

Re: [MBZ] (OT) general motors and their old tricks (my old story, but i tell it every time they upset me)

2008-04-28 Thread Sunil Hari
Take the $3k and put it into a real car. My parents bought a new 92 Saturn
and it was in the shop so much that the Saturn guys started going halfsies
on repairs. We finally traded it in after 8 years and 80,000 miles on a new
2000 Honda Accord that now has 77,000 repair-free miles.

They had a (new) 1980 Olds Omega that was a dud as well. Traded that in on
the Saturn.

We bought my 1997 Civic new. Since then, after 134,000 miles we've replaced
an idler pulley and one motor mount - the rest were maintenance items.

 I
can get that for it on eBay. I have to get the wagon put back
 together
before I sell it. I'm not in any hurry on that (ie, it might be 6+
   months).

 so,
   I'd
say the car has already taken it's biggest depreciation, while still
   being a
newer car. Sure, it will be cheaper still in a few years, but it
 will
   be
that much older, and that much closer to having stuff break too.
  Hey,
  I
like the idea of an older cheap car that you can tinker on too,
 (look
   what I
drive), but there are a lot of built in extras with a newer car for
  that
additional money too.

Mostly my thoughts as well... I've gotten burned out on fixing up old
cars to make them nice. I'm anal and picky enough that I want a
 *nice*
car, and I've just lost all time desire to make the older ones as nice
as my anal tendencies want them. About 2 years ago I went through
 some
severe stress with school + cars + work + house... I still haven't
recovered... I'm still at the point of not being able to consistently
 do
chores around the house, much less make my cars nice.

Also, after adding up all the stuff I wanted to do to the wagon I was
looking at over $10k of stuff (paint, updated interior body panels,
superturbo engine mods, etc). Plus LOTS and LOTS of my time. I've
decided that at this point in my life I want more free time... So I
bought a car that will hopefully not need much work for the near
 future.
For you armchair financial advisers... I just couldn't bring myself
 to
buy a Honda, Toyota, or a FWD VW TDI.

I miss being able to read a book, play a video game, go out with
friends, etc without feeling guilty/stressed because I still need to
paint this room, or get a car running, etc. I will get back into the
older car scene in the future, but I just can't right now.

My dad bought a sony bravia xbr3 LCD tv from Costco and has been deliriously
happy with it. There's a push to buy 1080p (and not just 720p) because in
the future broadcasters will broadcast in 1080p; I'm not buying it because
by that time, I'll need a new tv anyway.

Not true, it's just that most LCDs are 16:9 format, and 16:9 screens
have less area for the same diagonal compared to 4:3 screens---about
10% less, so they appear smaller.

With computer LCDs there is a separate issue in that CRT sizes were
often measured in terms of the actual picture tube size, some of which
was always covered by the plastic border, so that a nominal 17
actually only had 15 of display area. (Sort of like 2x4s.) With
LCDs the entire display area is measured.

and it doesn't have the satellite radio option. That is actually a deal
breaker. The salesguy is going to call me back tomorrow with the
service history, and what it will take to get the sat radio in... Oh,
another complaint is that the car costs more than $5k ;)

Its Anthracite Grey, has 67k miles on it, and they want $26k for it.
Seems like a smoking deal to me. Has already hit 50% depreciation. :)

[MBZ] two S-class questions

1) How is the Euro version of the 1983 380SE? I know the US version was

about 1/2 an hour, then shut off?

Not pay it. it's really that simple. Public hospitals are specifically NOT

Re: [MBZ] National Health Insurance: was: Coffee is Hot

2008-01-11 Thread Sunil Hari
Then again, I'm a health-care provider in another government-run program -
the US Navy. I can say that our quality of care and billing procedures and
coverage are second to none.

Billing is easy when it's all free. And with every procedure and every
patient I've seen, cost has been no object - if doctors wanted it, it was
done. I've been given thousands of dollars in vaccinations and
medications at zero cost to me.

Interestingly, despite every doctor being salaried and not being paid per
patient, I haven't seen a slacker yet.

Anyone else with military health care stories?

Re: [MBZ] OT, computer supplies

2007-12-28 Thread Sunil Hari
When I built my own PC (2003, pre-Mac) I used newegg - best service, one
source for all my parts, good reputation, and I got free shipping at the
time. Plus they source their memory from Crucial (Micron) which is one of
the better memory suppliers. I didn't want to futz around with multiple
stores shipping at different times and I built my computer for ~$400 with
excellent components. Still runs today; it's now my parents' computer.

If you want a Maxtor 80GB 7200 RPM hard drive, I have a brand-new one under
my bed that never been used. Make me an offer.

out the details of the data feed.

The Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard is priced right at $80 from Amazon, a
 matching AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+ 2.5GHz processor is $100,
Kingston has 2 gig of ECC DDR2 800 Ram for $60.
That will give you a barebones system that will output 1080p HDMI to
your new TV. You will need a copy of CyberLink Power DVD Ultra to play
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies - plus a HD reader of course. You can get a
copy of XP Media Center Edition cheap off eBay, or go for Vista
Ultimate - and turn it into a Tivo-like recorder. If you have cable,
you can get the ATI CableCard USB HDTV box for $300 and watch and
record HD TV. Add a TV Tuner and/or HDTV tuner to get on-air
 broadcasts.
XP Media Center Edition limits you to 4 tuners, Vista only does 2.
 500Gb Sata drives are $90.

I happen to be putting one of these together this week.

Re: [MBZ] Merry Christmas to all

Well done. Just because I'm not Christian doesn't stop tomorrow from being

politically correct.

Re: [MBZ] completely OT: Kirby vacuum

2007-12-23 Thread Sunil Hari
The one time I saw a Roomba in action, it was incompetent. There was a
normal rug on a hardwood floor, and it couldn't handle the rug at all. I
stared at it being dumb and thought, I could run any POS vacuum over it in
20 seconds and be done, yet I'm entranced by this Roomba for several
minutes!

BTW, solved the vacuuming problem long ago - I do it once a year. No pets,
no shoes in the house = no dirt. I swear by it.

 it does.

  My sincere condolences, Rusty.

I have the deepest respect for WWII vets, and it saddens me that so
many are slipping away without their stories being recorded. Every
time one passes on a little light goes out of the world. Sounds like
your father will be remembered by you at least. That's the best thing
you can do---preserve the memory of how he fought and for what.

Re: [MBZ] OT: More Saab guidance needed (hey Mitch!)

2007-12-08 Thread Sunil Hari
Offer her $250 due to the poor condition and unknown sounds. The reverse
thing -could- be part of the Saab interlock feature - you can't take out
the key without the gear lever in reverse. Could be something related to
that. As for the speed-related sound, could it be something rattling around
in the transmission case? Get the oil reasonably warm and drain the oil and
tranny fluid (which should be 5w-30 motor oil as well). See what falls
out. Could be some metal snerd rattling around, could be 1/2 her
transmission held in place by old oil.

It'll cost you a couple dollars to sort out the top and electrical issues
(could be lubrication with the windows and sunroof, could be more). Check
the buyers guide and FAQ at www.saabnet.com about the Classic 900.

So I couldn't resist going to take a look at the '92 Saab 900 Turbo
5-speed convertible with the chipped tooth in third gear. For less
than $1,000 and the rest of the car in supposedly perfect condition, I
had to see if it was something livable, like a bad syncro (I can
double-clutch just fine, thank you) or something cheap to fix, like
 the clutch.

Weird symptoms. The car fired right up after a jump (it had been
sitting for a few months). At cold idle, there was a regular sharp
metal-on-metal sound from the front lower part of the engine
compartment, somewhere between a tick and a knock---sort of like
tock-tock-pause, where the pause was a little less than a second.
Tock, tock, one potato, tock, tock, one potato. Not at all
subtle---this was something you could hear from half a block away.

Driving off in first gear, it was clear that the frequency of the
sound was related to road speed. I shifted into second wondering if
it would continue to increase or drop with the engine speed, then
increase again. Instead it went away entirely. In third there was a
steady but less frequent, and much louder, metal-on-metal CLACK, again
changing with road speed. (This, according to the somewhat ditzy
female owner, was the behavior that had led her to abandon the
car---It made this awful noise and I drove it home and parked it and
haven't started it since!) I didn't get to drive it fast enough to
bother going into fourth or fifth, unfortunately.

It gets weirder: when I got back to the owner's house and let the car
sit and idle warm for a while, the noise went away. Still there when
the car was moving, in other words---just no longer at idle. Then I
put it in reverse and first alternately, moving back and forth a few
feet at a time, trying to make the noise come back or establish a
pattern---but there was nothing, until all of a sudden there was a
CLUNK and the car stopped dead, stuck with the gearshift in position
for reverse but unable to move. In other words, it was in gear---if
you let the clutch out, it would stall---but it wouldn't move. The
female fiddled with the stick for a while and finally got it back to
neutral, whereupon it felt like it was shifting into the forward gears
 properly---but I didn't try reverse again.

Also on the bad side, the car was showing definite signs of neglect.
The female was in over her head and knew it---the engine was dirty,
the battery old, little electrical things were dead or dying (power
locks, windows, heater fan), and, probably the worst thing about the
car after the transmission issues, there was a sloppily duct-taped
tear in the soft top, which had let in enough rain during the recent
monsoons in Oregon to soak the rear carpets.

On the good side, it shifted fine (until the transmission jammed up as
described), clutch didn't slip, suspension was tight, and the engine
seemed healthy---idled smoothly and had a surprising amount of power
when the turbo kicked in. And the body was straight with good paint,
and the 15-year-old leather interior seemed less worn than my 300D's
20-year-old MB-Tex. And I forgot how small and nimble 900s
 are---little front-drive go-karts! It made my 124 feel like a huge,
 lumbering brute of a vehicle.

The female was asking $995, but I bet she'll take $600 or even less.
 What say y'all?

Re: [MBZ] Quality of the 190

2007-12-08 Thread Sunil Hari
Actually, when they were designing the 201 they overengineered the whole car
on purpose because it was MB's first entry into small cars. They felt they
had to prove they could make a small car and still have it be a Mercedes.
Hence, they're excellent cars, on par with 124's in build quality.

Of course, this put sticker price in the $30K range in the mid-80s for a car
smaller than an Accord. But I'd feel totally comfortable buying a 201 for
me or my SO.

On Dec 8, 2007 4:10 AM, Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This is a good time to ask a question I have had for a while regarding the
 201:

Since it was the compact - the Baby Benz - the entry level Mercedes, was
the quality lower in any way?

I know the official answer from Mercedes would be of course not. But logic
steers me elsewhere. If they are building a car that they will sell for
 less
money, and to lower income or perhaps less discriminating buyers who just
want a chance at owning a Benz and are barely able to achieve it, it seems
to me that corners would be cut in quality.

Of course I hope this is not the case, but...

From what I see, everything gets a better price on eBay, but CL is
nice because you're likely go get a local buyer who will show up with
cash, not some distant internet presence who may or may not actually
 complete the transaction.

BTW I read on another list where some guy in Canada got scammed out of
$20,000 on an eBay car listing. So, buyer beware -- personally if I
were to pay that kind of money for a car, I'd insist on paying in

Georgia-no, they didn't win their conference title
KU-no, they didn't win their conference title
VTU-possible, they handled BC well at 30-16 (revenge??) but lost to LSU
 48-7 and
 lost to BC 10-14
LSU-possible, they only beat Tenn 21-14 but they did loose to Arkansas,
 and KY
 (who slaughtered Arkansas)
USC-possible, they handled UCLA 24-7 with loses to Stanford(one of the top
upsets of the season) and Oregon
Oklahoma-possible, they did handle Mizzu well (but they have 2 losses to
 un-ranked teams Colorado/TxTech)
LSU's strength of schedule is 27, VTU is 11, USC is 74, OU is 59

Taking all of that inVTU plays OU and LSU plays USC. The winners
 there play
eachother for the right to play OSU.

But, being realistic, Georgia is in. They're the only 2 loss team with
 both
losses coming from top 20 teams. NO ONE else can claim that feat..
 What
about KU? KU has NO WINS over a top 30 team. Georgia has victories over
currently ranked #10 Florida and #24 Auburn. Mizzu has wins over
 currently
ranked #15 Illinois, #28 TxTech, and #5 KU. You cannot put Mizzu above OU
 and
OU is below Georgia. LSU is above VTU, but has 2 un-ranked team losses.
Georgia still is the best looking 2 loss team in the nation even though
 they
were kept out of their conference championship

My final call. OSU vs Georgia.

I tried to find the P/N in the EPC but did not have any luck. Could not
find the right section. It's not very user friendly.
The Porsche PET system is easier - it looks like the old Picture Parts
Catalogues MB used to give owners? Those were great for finding parts
but PNs were more difficult. I have a set of Microfische around here with
all the PNs but they're hard to use without a microfische machine.

Yeah, it would have been nice to meet another Dieseleer ;-) The disease I
have which has disabled me, is similar
to MS but only affects my peripheral nerves (feet and lower legs so far).
Some people have muscle loss but for me it's all pain.
When you called I was having a semi-bad day. Today, I;m having a really
 bad
 day.
Feels like my toe is being broken - same one over and over, every 20-30
seconds. My wife is frustrated because she cannot help
and being a RN it's in her nature to help. - Plus, me screaming in pain
every 20 seconds or so is kind of nerve wracking. it's been going on for
10 hours so far. Sometimes it lasts for a few minutes, few hours or a few
days. I hope this won't be one of the longer periods. I;d never heard of
this before I was diagnosed - and I thought, fine, once they figure out
 what
I have they;ll give me a pill and I'll get well. But not everything is
curable. Of course, given Marshall's recent passing and lengthy poor
 health
it makes me thankful my disease is not worse.

It never fails to amaze me how much pain the body can generate without any
 visible signs of damage.

The meds I take cause me to get *very* sleepy at times - so driving is a
problem now - unless someone is with me.

Thanks again for the tool - will use it as quickly as possible.

 Hi Dwight -
I'm seeing prices all over - rebuilt from $180 (30 day warranty) to
almost $300 and new ones $300 and up. I would consider trying to
 resolder
mine but if I need to use it as a core/exchange they won't accept it if
 it
has been opened and/or worked on. Used ones are hard to find -
 evidently
they are different from the gas cars so they are not as easy to find.

So I am still not sure what I will do. Rusty has new ones and
  rebuilt
ones. I am leaning toward him since he will back up anything he sells.
 But haven;t made a final decision -

Before I buy anything I'll clean the connection and apply
 dielectric
 contact grease.

Re: [MBZ] W124 CC Amp

easy way to get to the CC amp - take off the driver side dash panel by
taking off the headlight switch and the plastic surrounding the key, then
unscrew the phillips head screws and parking brake and hood release
attachment, then the panel should come off. The CC amp is held in place by
a 10mm hex head bolt IIRC. undo it and the mounting bracket in one piece
and make the exchange on benchtop.

A projector is a great idea as long as you budget for a replacement
bulb at $300+ every year, more often if you have kids or other family
members who leave the TV on all day. I went through that thought
process, figured out it was a lot cheaper in the long run to spring
for a big LCD up front. Finally went with a Philips 47 1080p for
$1800 from Best Buy. Couldn't be happier with it. Better picture and
much lighter and more compact than what it replaced (a 46 Mitsubishi
rear-projection, one of the first 1080p TVs but no great shakes now).

Re: [MBZ] Changing glow plugs?

2007-11-27 Thread Sunil Hari
use a 12mm ratcheting box-end wrench to make access easier - hard to get to
with sockets. Thread the new ones in by hand - last thing you want to do is
cross-thread the holes. Some people put a little oil on the threads, some
don't - I think the torque ratings for the plugs are for dry threads.

If there's a lot of carbon in the holes, you'll probably want to ream out
the excess carbon before putting in new plugs.

And don't lose the nuts holding the electrical wires on the plugs - they're
a bear to relocate once they fall off into the engine bay.

On Nov 27, 2007 10:55 PM, Chris Lane [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Today I went outside with my newly liberated meter, and found that 3 of my
 5
glow plugs seem to be bad. My glow plug light stopped working a little
while back, and I have not been able to check that out until now. I
measured the impedance of each one at the relay. So, I'm figuring that I
should just change them all. The relay seemed ok, as much as I could
 check
 it out today.
So my question is, is there anything funky about replacing them? Spark
plugs are no problem, unless they are in a Toyota Previa (In which case
 you
have to take out the passenger seat, and open the floor of the van to get
 to
them). Its in an 82 300SD, so a 617. All five of them seem like they
should be fairly easy to get to. The 5th one looks like the trickiest,
 just
because of the oil filter housing, but there should be plenty of space.
  Are
there any special tools that are needed to replace them? Do I just
diconnect the wires, and get the appropriate sized wrench and start
 removing
them, and then reverse the operation to install the new ones?
 Thanks,
 Chris

[MBZ] well, i've finally done it

2007-11-17 Thread Sunil Hari
In my new-to-me 1988 Saab 900 turbo, I've somehow managed to lock both
seatbelts (shoulder and lap) in the retracted position. Those quirky Swedes
haven't made it at all obvious how to unlock these belts. Anyone out there
got any suggestions?

I've already taken out the seat and removed the seat belt reels and twiddled
with them to no avail.

I know this is non-diesel and non-Benz (and that is my cross to bear) but
any help would be appreciated.

just bought an 88 900 turbo. Not sure if it's an SPG, but the guy claimed
it was. In any case, it's faster than anything else i've had (?) or at
least it -feels- faster. The PO tweaked the APG to increase the turbo
boost. Scared the snot out of the SO - her nail marks are still in my right
forearm.

It's a keeper.

I would love to have rear head rests in my '85 300SD. I thought
 one
way to do this might be to find the rear seat back of another W126
(with head rests) and swap them. I saw an 87 ??? SEL at the Pick N
Pull yesterday...would that seat back fit?

Should, _if_ you're not trying to cross-pollinate a reclining
seat back into a non- car, or vice versa. They're different.

Any other ideas? Could the guts be taken out of a W126 rear head
rest apparatus and be installed into my current rear seat back?

That might work, but I'd want to be awfully sure before cutting
 the holes in the material.

Re: [MBZ] Looking at a Red 1958 Porsche

2007-11-03 Thread Sunil Hari
if you think you can find a source for Porsche tractor (!) parts, buy it. I
wouldn't pay more than $2000 for a non-running, parts missing Porsche.

If you can't find parts, you'll have paid for lawn art. But i'm sure
it's been done before.

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda use of dramatically unequal treads - Opinions wanted

2007-11-02 Thread Sunil Hari
Having unequal tread heights is a great way to burn out a differential. But
it takes time (hundreds, maybe thousands of miles). So what you may want to
do is use the spare, buy a matching tire and mount that on the other side.

Or you can go hog wild and replace them all.

On 11/2/07, Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Okay, I tried to explain in the subject what I need to know:

On our 2000 Honda CRV, the tires are probably 1/3 tread remaining or
less. We have a nail in one of the tires, so I put on the spare which
 has about 100% tread.

The difference in tire diameter is clear, but how big a deal will this
be? Need to worry, or not?

Re: [MBZ] Yea or nay: '91 300D, 305k miles

2007-10-31 Thread Sunil Hari
I paid a LOT more for a 92 300D with 286Kmi on it, but it had nearly
everything but the transmission rebuilt or replaced and zero rust. They're
excellent automobiles. Buy it.

Decent condition, but smoke silver paint has two dime-sized rust

How crazy would it be to buy this car? Am also starting a new job

 Tony,

Sounds like the perfect commute car, especially at that distance. If it
drives now, you will save big on fuel and maintenance right from day one.
Problems will come and go but you have a nice reserve based on initial
 cost.

1992 Civic VX, $1500. Drive slow, get 50mpg.
Drive it like you stole it and still get 35-40mpg.

If it wasn't a 2000 mile round trip, I'd go look at it for sure.
