Or even if you don't go that far, at least the stories are out there for
your friends and family. My grandmother has been typing up stories since
the late '90s, now she has a pretty big collection that my father has
stored someplace. I understand some of them are even true! :)

She was recently diagnosed with a serious heart condition so it is
comforting that her mind will be able to outlast her body, and that I will
be able to introduce her to my grandkids.

[MBZ] OT Guns again was Re: Nerd alert

2013-02-08 Thread Tim C
In fairness he did not say you could shoot down a commercial airliner, at
least according to the article. Of course you could take out a plane
with a gun, the North Vietnamese made an occupation of it. You can even
take out a plane with a well-timed carrier pigeon.

To destroy a train, however, would require a penny.

It does, but when we were talking about increasing the size of

Of course for it to be that car I actually have to make time to keep it

...A bit complicated, but the last of the great over-engineered MBs.
These cars have piqued my interest the last few years. Any pics?..

I think you are getting a little carried away here. The early 140 program
(1992) was so overbudget and the cars were such warranty nightmares and
 cost
MB so much money in fixes that the 140 Chief Engineer was banished to run a
 truck plant in Malaysia.

Isn't that what Jaime and Rusty have been preaching forever? Most of us
bought our cars used, old, and on the far side of the bell curve. The ones
with serious factory defects have already been crushed, and when something
breaks we just say it was worn out, rather than cursing the half-plastered
German who put it together.

Yes, I suspect a mid-80s MB will have fewer issues than a mid-80s
Chevrolet, for a wide variety of reasons - but a big one is that people who
invest in MBs are more likely to take care of them, and/or be a pedant like
Roger with warranty issues. Clearly MB is (at least was) toward the front
of the curve on new technology, puts thought into maintenance and repair,
tries to source quality parts, and takes customer care very seriously, so
it's not that an MB is a Chevy, but it's also not a magical mystery machine.

Our older cars are simpler to maintain, and parts availability means there
are proportionally many on the road. So I love mine, probably too much -
but that's just because they are fun, maintenance is usually reasonably
interesting, and I enjoy driving them. And when they are broken, I will
get rid of them, without cursing Ma Benz for putting out such a shoddy
product. Eventually. If Max will make me an offer, and Rich will come
pick it up next time he visits the Hill of Chapels. (Speaking of, I will
get pictures and stats into a CL post soon enough. :)

What exactly does over engineered mean, anyway? To me it means trouble
free with no corner cutting in design or manufacturing.

There is always corner cutting, there always has been. Ferrari engineers
traded reliability for speed. Volvo engineers traded efficiency for
safety. Ford traded manufacturing efficiency and a warranty for putting
things together in the first place. Kia traded existing designs for doing
work. Etc. I happen to agree with the old MB engineers - long-term
reliability in exchange for cost is a good trade-off - but clearly the
market is big enough for a lots of people to have lots of different ideas
on what is good and bad.

doors. I went and unplugged it. Now I see 0.05 A (Clock).
Question: does it still draw 1.5 A (18 W) when tripped out?

Sounds like maybe the wires or contacts shorted from the water, or salt
residue? What happens if you just unplug that door?

I wouldn't expect the central locking itself to draw anything substantial
unless it was trying to -do- something, though to be honest I haven't been
in that situation.

Of course there is also the fact that I no longer can find all

Ah. That will be a problem no matter _what_ you do for a new

 installers.

Not necessarily, VMWare Converter (free) will convert an existing machine
into a VMWare image. I assume from that point you could further convert to
another image type.

In any case if there were programs I needed for work and I didn't have the
install disks, I would install VMWare Converter, run out and get an
external drive bigger than the base computer, and make a backup image
ASAP. I would probably even pay the markup to get the drive locally.
Otherwise you are one hard drive crash from never being able to use those

don't have to set up the VM infrastructure immediately or even soon, but
you are really going to want that image at some point.

was changed, nor did the PO.

I get the idea it was very well cared for until the PO got hold of it, and
then obviously I've let it sit since the freeze plug broke. When it was
running I never had any issues with power, but then my 300D may have warped
my perspective there.

Re: [MBZ] OT Cheap Tablet PC Screen byhysema

2013-01-20 Thread Tim C
Depends how cheap. If it is a resistive screen (you can manipulate it with
a pencil) then you will need to replace the whole thing, and if you don't
it will completely stop working eventually.

If it is capacitive, it will work indefinitely. I bought a new phone
with a cracked screen, with the screen protector it is almost unnoticeable
except on white backgrounds.

To replace it depends on the construction. The HP Touchpad, for example,
has an independent glass face so you can just replace the glass*. My new
phone has the glass glued to the LCD so you destroy both if you try to
replace it. You can buy the glass and LCD together but it is of course
more expensive.

*BT, destroyed some connector so now it no longer works... bummer.

I have replaced a number of other glass screens over the years - it is not
hard if you have a clean work space, patience, and steady hands. Since it
is winter be sure to use a grounding strap. I have always used OE-ish
parts from eBay.

If you find the tablet usable, keep using it; if not, watch a couple
disassembly videos and crack it open. You will be able to see if the glass
is glued to a casing around the LCD or if it is glued to the LCD itself.
If the latter you can try a heat gun (not a hair dryer, that is guaranteed
to fail) but you are almost certain to destroy the LCD. If the former you
can get glass off and replace it without too much risk.

The sheets are really thin, not sure a glass shop would carry them.

Best,
Tim

to get the complete part from the OEM or their supplier.

After-the-fact Kaleb can ban (and has). He doesn't proactively ban people

post will get. :)

The Ruger link does appear to be strictly political, so I'm inclined to
agree with Jaime that it would be more appropriate to banned even though it
was marked OT.

We have a gentleman's agreement about no politics, and no cursing. No
written rules, that I am aware of. We should probably add to that
agreement, no attachments larger than 100mb.

Attachment limit needs to be enforced, otherwise newbies won't know until
they have broken it. If anyone is still downloading mail for offline
reading (?) then they will have issues with large attachments, even if it
is just Rusty sending a video he expects to get linked. Once upon a time I
had set up a picture host for a local newsgroup, I suppose we could do the
same here.

Kaleb has temporarily moderated folks (Mao for example) for cursing and
politics, so it's an enforced agreement. :)

I suppose whether or not to dispose of Constitutional amendments is
political and as such, should be dropped here, and taken up at Banned.
When Gary was still here, we did have several good discussions on firearms,
if for no other reason, they can be highly engineered mechanically
intricate pieces, and we here on this list seem to have an affinity for
finely crafted, well engineered things, such as Mercedes, mechanical

Since it both lubricates and rejects water AND dust it seems it might be
the lubricant of choice for door locks and ignition.

I have been using Tri-Flow for some years, originally on sewing machines
(where it is better than the real stuff on high-speed parts) but its use
has extended to cars and locks and bikes and everything else. The first
time I ordered the spray bottle, but there is a pencil/needle applicator in
the bicycle section at Wal-Mart that is more expensive but oh-so-much
easier to get into those little nooks and crannies.

I have used it on my locks, speedometer, sunroof and seat slides, but not
on my slide rule. The spray has worked well even without the addition of
extra grease, I suppose it probably loosens the old grease - I didn't think
it would be a long term solution but it's been a couple years since I've
had to reapply. The pencil is liquid oil, it is great for locks but not so
great for big surface areas.

You can voice-train Android (Google) voice recognition, so it gets better

That said I was going to recommend your niece/nephew-in-law consider some
of the iphone/android software for this. Google's default keyboard has a
voice module so it is relatively simple to switch to and from voice typing,
and the latest versions (4.0+) are very good. Swype keyboard (also free)
uses Dragon technology and is frequently updated. The phone/tablet would
also have an integrated camera so they can isolate records, maybe using
something like EverNote that can keep information together easily.

Maybe whole drive encryption? Why would they install that on a student's

Can someone suggest a way to wipe the hd so I can install my copy of winxp?

I have used
http://sourceforge.net/projects/systemrescuecd/

but any bootable Linux distribution should be able to let you boot, start
up gparted or fdisk, and blow away whatever you please, unless there is
some kind of hardware integration on the Thinkpads or that particular drive.

I went to startup and changed the order with the cd starting first.
That allowed my winxp disc to boot until it stopped because it could not
 find the hd.
The hdd diagnostic program takes one minute per gig. Since the installed
os boots up every time without problems, I didn't run it.

If the diagnostic utility is that slow you might have a bad drive, it would
be worth running it overnight just to see.

Obihai is just a VOIP gateway device with a special interconnect to Google

The problem today is that we make it easy to be dumb but physically
strong. Witness the stupid amounts professional athletes get paid.

I think you are wrong here.

1) Smart people on aggregate make a whole lot more than athletes. There
are also smart people who are a whole lot richer than any of the athletes
they hire. I used to work for the owner of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks [don't
hate me Jim :]; he is very smart and not uncommonly strong, and his income
made his players' look like minimum wage.

2) Trying to be a professional athlete is like playing the lottery, 99.9%
of the players go home poorer than they started. Odds are slightly better
for entrepreneurs.

3) Stupid athletes tend to make bad decisions, smart athletes tend to
advance. My son recently asked me why Michael Jordan owned the Nissan
dealer near my house; meanwhile the showboating players of the time are off
playing celebrity pinball to make ends meet. I would have thought Michael
Vick was in the stupid boat but now I'm not so sure.

Strong and stupid can subsist, but not necessarily thrive, in modern
society at least.

Albert Einstein never bothered to memorize things like his home phone

Oh, is that why Edison never called? :)

I held my tongue when my son's teacher said, the only way to learn
multiplication tables is to memorize them. But it was hard. When we left

[MBZ] FS/BO: 615-617, 114-115 Paper Manuals

2012-12-08 Thread Tim C
I am cleaning out the basement and found three paper service manuals for
Mercedes Benz models 220D (115.110), 240D (115.117), and 300D (115.114)
(UP TO 1976 MODELS). Make me an offer.

(The original receipt says the chassis service manuals manual were $25, and
the engine manual was $17. It also says the maintenance manual, which I
don't have or at least didn't find, was $17.)

The three books I have:
Service Manual Engines OM 615-617
Service Manual Passenger Cars starting 1968, Series 114-115 Body and
Chassis Volume 1
Ditto, Volume 2

These are fairly dense, I'm not sure how much book rates will run; maybe 10
pounds from 27705. Roughly the size and shape of a Priority flat rate box.

The Chassis 1 book is in okay condition. Chassis 2 is in three pieces:
cover and title page are off, then the binding broke at 42.0. They are not
collector grade, but content is fine and usable on those two.

The engine book has water damage, and a lot of the pages are sticking
together. I have been able to cleanly pull apart everything I have tried,
but there is a definite possibility that some content may be destroyed when
you try to separate any particular pages.

I'm mainly interested in getting them to a better home, I will take the
best offer after a few days that covers shipping.

It is questions like this that inspired the person to create the

others as well, with a larger eye to the political concept of tort reform.
Binding arbitration was almost an afterthought, but I hadn't thought about
it as much so it stuck out to me. Politics are US centric but obviously
the concepts may be generally interesting.

The filmmaker did interview the family of the woman who was injured, some

If the coffee is handed to one, and the person at the window says don't

I know those steps are narrower than I would like them to be and I need to
be extra careful but I still managed to slip. Whose fault is that if not
 mine?

Depends, how many people have slipped down your staircase in the past few
months? Would you say there is something wrong with your staircase; maybe
several of the boards are loose, or half the steps are missing? Let's say
the biggest single source of accidents in the house is that staircase, you
and your visitors have a history of hundreds of falls a month down the
staircase, and you have never bothered to do anything about it even though
you were completely aware of what was going on.

Not sure the folks who built the staircase would be liable, but you might
be (which, by the way, is obviously not the reality of your situation -
hope you are feeling better :).

  172 Hits Truck: Three Killed

Three people aboard a Cessna 172 were killed after the aircraft hit a
pickup truck on the runway of Knox County Regional Airport near Rockland,
 Maine,
late Friday. Airport Manager Jeffrey Northgraves told Bangor Daily News

the 172 was taking off just before 5 p.m. when it hit the front of the
truck, which was crossing the runway. The aircraft crashed in bush about
 300
yards beyond the runway and caught fire. Bystanders reached the crash
 site and
tried to pull occupants from the aircraft but the fire was too intense.
 The
aircraft was consumed and the registration marks destroyed, complicating
identification of the occupants. It was not a local aircraft, Northgraves
 said.

The driver of the pickup was not injured. He has not been identified,
 but
Northgraves said he is a pilot and was authorized to drive on the airport.
The vehicle is not owned by the county and the driver is not a county
employee. Northgraves said vehicles operated on airport property have to
 be
equipped with a radio monitoring the local frequency but he said it's not
 known
whether there was any radio communication between the aircraft and truck
 before
the accident. The runway was cleared to allow a scheduled airline flight
 to
land about two-and-a-half hours after the crash and an FAA investigator
 arrived shortly after.
