I think you are getting a little carried away here. The early 140 program (1992) was so overbudget and the cars were such warranty nightmares and cost MB so much money in fixes that the 140 Chief Engineer was banished to run a truck plant in Malaysia. Isn't that what Jaime and Rusty have been preaching forever? Most of us bought our cars used, old, and on the far side of the bell curve. The ones with serious factory defects have already been crushed, and when something breaks we just say it was worn out, rather than cursing the half-plastered German who put it together. Yes, I suspect a mid-80s MB will have fewer issues than a mid-80s Chevrolet, for a wide variety of reasons - but a big one is that people who invest in MBs are more likely to take care of them, and/or be a pedant like Roger with warranty issues. Clearly MB is (at least was) toward the front of the curve on new technology, puts thought into maintenance and repair, tries to source quality parts, and takes customer care very seriously, so it's not that an MB is a Chevy, but it's also not a magical mystery machine. Our older cars are simpler to maintain, and parts availability means there are proportionally many on the road. So I love mine, probably too much - but that's just because they are fun, maintenance is usually reasonably interesting, and I enjoy driving them. And when they are broken, I will get rid of them, without cursing Ma Benz for putting out such a shoddy product. Eventually. If Max will make me an offer, and Rich will come pick it up next time he visits the Hill of Chapels. (Speaking of, I will get pictures and stats into a CL post soon enough. :) What exactly does over engineered mean, anyway? To me it means trouble free with no corner cutting in design or manufacturing. There is always corner cutting, there always has been. Ferrari engineers traded reliability for speed. Volvo engineers traded efficiency for safety. Ford traded manufacturing efficiency and a warranty for putting things together in the first place. Kia traded existing designs for doing work. Etc. I happen to agree with the old MB engineers - long-term reliability in exchange for cost is a good trade-off - but clearly the market is big enough for a lots of people to have lots of different ideas on what is good and bad. New hardware or new virtual machine will both need installers. Not necessarily, VMWare Converter (free) will convert an existing machine into a VMWare image. I assume from that point you could further convert to another image type. In any case if there were programs I needed for work and I didn't have the install disks, I would install VMWare Converter, run out and get an external drive bigger than the base computer, and make a backup image ASAP. Grey with a pinstripe. Rust in the door dent and front quarter on the exterior where paint was removed in the collision. Paint is horrible BTW, clear coat peeled miserably. I always had in mind to replace the quarter and door from the junkyard and then repaint, but never got to it. 300K, maybe? Been a while. May also not be accurate, it exceeded 8 years so the seller didn't certify. I have oil logs through 230K give or take. #22 head. I have not checked the VIN on the block (not even sure where it is) so I don't know if that is the original. I have no idea when the head was changed, nor did the PO. I get the idea it was very well cared for until the PO got hold of it, and then obviously I've let it sit since the freeze plug broke. When it was running I never had any issues with power, but then my 300D may have warped my perspective there. Re: [MBZ] OT Cheap Tablet PC Screen byhysema
Depends how cheap. If it is a resistive screen (you can manipulate it with a pencil) then you will need to replace the whole thing, and if you don't it will completely stop working eventually. If it is capacitive, it will work indefinitely. I bought a new phone with a cracked screen, with the screen protector it is almost unnoticeable except on white backgrounds. To replace it depends on the construction. The HP Touchpad, for example, has an independent glass face so you can just replace the glass*. My new phone has the glass glued to the LCD so you destroy both if you try to replace it. You can buy the glass and LCD together but it is of course more expensive. *BT, destroyed some connector so now it no longer works... bummer. I have replaced a number of other glass screens over the years - it is not hard if you have a clean work space, patience, and steady hands. Since it is winter be sure to use a grounding strap. I have always used OE-ish parts from eBay. If you find the tablet usable, keep using it; if not, watch a couple disassembly videos and crack it open. You will be able to see if the glass is glued to a casing around the LCD or if it is glued to the LCD itself. If the latter you can try a heat gun (not a hair dryer, that is guaranteed to fail) but you are almost certain to destroy the LCD. If the former you can get glass off and replace it without too much risk. The sheets are really thin, not sure a glass shop would carry them. I have been using Tri-Flow for some years, originally on sewing machines (where it is better than the real stuff on high-speed parts) but its use has extended to cars and locks and bikes and everything else. The first time I ordered the spray bottle, but there is a pencil/needle applicator in the bicycle section at Wal-Mart that is more expensive but oh-so-much easier to get into those little nooks and crannies. I have used it on my locks, speedometer, sunroof and seat slides, but not on my slide rule. The spray has worked well even without the addition of extra grease, I suppose it probably loosens the old grease - I didn't think it would be a long term solution but it's been a couple years since I've had to reapply. The pencil is liquid oil, it is great for locks but not so great for big surface areas. Actually the 940 was great preparation for driving older MBs, as it had a tendency to lose power at random for a few months before the computer stopped working. I got used to driving with lots of room for turns. Probably should set one up for the kids in a few years. :) The diesels had a relatively good reputation among Volvo drivers, but I seem to recall reading here that they were similar to the BMW diesels of the time. No promise that recollection is correct. This was back in the days of usenet, if you can find an archive for alt.autos.volvo there is a lot of good information. With this description, I would have said the same, I think. Not that I'm a great diagnostician but so far it seems obvious. I would be wondering why a heater core would generate a CEL. When we got home my son indicated the truck was running funny, so I started it up noticed the check engine light was still on, and the truck was definitely idling very rough, and it died after 30-45 seconds. I tried starting it a couple Friend had a Chevrolet that did this, it was his FI computer. I assume the Suz people ran a compression test? Google's never heard of a P4002, Ford's private's appear to be P1xxx. P0402 is EGR. was locked up and would need to be replaced... there was nothing they could do, and I could come get the truck Wait, I thought it would run for a few seconds with low compression? If they say that the heater core failure is a symptom of the head gasket being blown, then they should have checked the head gasket instead of sending you on your way. If they told you that the head gasket was bad and that you would have needed an engine, would you have spent $1200 to get the heater core fixed? The explanation doesn't I am with you so far... make sense. What I think happened is that they failed to fill up the coolant after replacing the head gasket. OR, at I suppose you meant replacing the heater core. I wonder if they filled the reservoir but didn't cycle the heater, do Fords have a shutoff like MBs? In any case, why didn't the dummy light and/or temp gauge go wild on the way home if it was truly starting with low coolant? least they failed to properly diagnose the head gasket. Once they thought it was the heater core, they just stopped It does seem minimal to test-drive the vehicle to temp when you finish working on the coolant system, and stick the pressure tester on it. and didn't do anything else. I would complain and tell them that you want your money back for the heater core repair. They may say that they had time in diagnosing the problem, and they are probably right about that. So, you should Since they flubbed the diagnosis in the first place, I would think it would be worth paying a lawyer (hm, maybe this guy has a friend who might know someone :) to draft a letter for the whole amount. At least around here one hour at the dealer costs more than 30 minutes of legal advice. On Raleigh CL '99 F150s are between $1600 and $2000 so I'm not sure the replacement cost of the vehicle would be worth much more than the amount paid for the core, and I agree the latter would be a lot easier to argue so I think you are on the right track. The three books I have: Service Manual Engines OM 615-617 Service Manual Passenger Cars starting 1968, Series 114-115 Body and Chassis Volume 1 Ditto, Volume 2 These are fairly dense, I'm not sure how much book rates will run; maybe 10 pounds from 27705. Roughly the size and shape of a Priority flat rate box. The Chassis 1 book is in okay condition. Chassis 2 is in three pieces: cover and title page are off, then the binding broke at 42.0. They are not collector grade, but content is fine and usable on those two. The engine book has water damage, and a lot of the pages are sticking together. I have been able to cleanly pull apart everything I have tried, but there is a definite possibility that some content may be destroyed when you try to separate any particular pages. I had a 123 oe alternator fail with this, plus the alternator light would come on only when the car was turned off (other lights were off then). Especially when it is in a drive through line. How is McD's supposed to prevent someone driving a car from spilling coffee once the cup is handed over? Do we put childproof caps on the cup so one cannot drink it in the car? It is questions like this that inspired the person to create the documentary. It not only covers the McDonald's coffee case but several others as well, with a larger eye to the political concept of tort reform. Binding arbitration was almost an afterthought, but I hadn't thought about it as much so it stuck out to me. Politics are US centric but obviously the concepts may be generally interesting. The filmmaker did interview the family of the woman who was injured, some graphics too if you're into that kind of thing. I knew going in that the press reports on the McDonald's coffee case were only loosely based on reality, but it's one thing to know that and another thing to hear about it from the woman's survivors. If the coffee is handed to one, and the person at the window says don't worry, the coffee is not hot enough to hurt you if you spill it on your lap is one not most likely to complain that one only drinks hot coffee??? I don't drink coffee, but if they hand me a cup of boiling Diet Coke it is definitely going back. :) The world is becoming a wierd place. No one wants to assume any fault at all for their own actions. Accidents are unfortunate and sometimes people get hurt but very often it is their own fault. In NC I would not expect her to have been awarded anything, even medical costs, because the jury found that she was 20% at fault. They didn't mention contributory negligence in the documentary, I'm not sure how many states are still set up that way. Should I sue the folks who built the stairs that I slipped on last week? I have only lived in that house for 31 years. I know those steps are narrower than I would like them to be and I need to be extra careful but I still managed to slip. Whose fault is that if not mine? Depends, how many people have slipped down your staircase in the past few months? Would you say there is something wrong with your staircase; maybe several of the boards are loose, or half the steps are missing? Let's say the biggest single source of accidents in the house is that staircase, you and your visitors have a history of hundreds of falls a month down the staircase, and you have never bothered to do anything about it even though you were completely aware of what was going on. Not sure the folks who built the staircase would be liable, but you might be (which, by the way, is obviously not the reality of your situation - hope you are feeling better :). Airport Manager Jeffrey Northgraves told Bangor Daily News the 172 was taking off just before 5 p.m. when it hit the front of the truck, which was crossing the runway. The aircraft crashed in bush about 300 yards beyond the runway and caught fire. Bystanders reached the crash site and tried to pull occupants from the aircraft but the fire was too intense. The aircraft was consumed and the registration marks destroyed, complicating identification of the occupants. It was not a local aircraft, Northgraves said. The driver of the pickup was not injured. He has not been identified, but Northgraves said he is a pilot and was authorized to drive on the airport. The vehicle is not owned by the county and the driver is not a county employee. Northgraves said vehicles operated on airport property have to be equipped with a radio monitoring the local frequency but he said it's not known whether there was any radio communication between the aircraft and truck before the accident. The runway was cleared to allow a scheduled airline flight to land about two-and-a-half hours after the crash and an FAA investigator arrived shortly after.
