Bad water pump only leaking when hot and under pressure -- this one
can be hard to find.
Failed auxillary pump that only leaks when running -- look for coolant

Failed head gasket leaking out the side.  Failed head gasket leaking

Cracked head, same symptoms as the head gasket.
Pressure test the system, that should at least eliminate some of the

Changed the engine oil and filter on my '87 300TD this past weekend.
Sucked out the old with an electric pump.  Filled with M1 5w-40, installed
a new Hengst oil filter.  Easy-peasy.

Need to order some new oil sample kits from Larry.  I expect this engine
can safely go at least 10k miles before reaching the soot load limit.

W123.Not really a fair comparison, the newest 123 cars are 5+ years older and
considering their cost when new much less common...
I think when most people say bulletproof they mean maintainable. The real
killer for me on 123 cars is the inability to find one that isn't all rusted
out. Most of the cheap ones now have descended to the level of real beaters
that even I don't want to tackle. I saw a couple on Craigslist in the $2500
range with no exterior trim, terrible interiors and many signs of neglect like
rust, failed paint, leaking windows/sunroof and failed ACC.
Last summer when my Jetta quit on the highway (failed wiring to the shutoff
solenoid) a friend said Geez I thought those were reliable... Its a 16 year
old car I drove 20,000 miles in a year with only 3 breakdowns. One I was able
to drive home from, one I could have driven home from with a little more
knowledge and 2 feet of jumper wire that I now carry. Sounds pretty good to me.

definitely not bulletproof, as does the fact that there are local
junkyards that they have so many of them that they won't take them
unless you tow them to their doorstep and sign them over to them. they
definitely are not bulletproof'; the appeal (to us) used to be that
they were reliable and perpetually maintainable while running B100, but
the parts availability has changed to where that's not even any longer
the case. sad, because we enjoyed over 125,000 miles on our 300D running
almost exclusively BioDiesel (without any troubles related to the
fuels), and don't know what we're going to get to replace it.
in fact, we have a 20 year old J**p that's done far more severe
duty and has more miles on it and has been cheaper to keep (even
including all the modifications) than our MBZs, and an early 90's Toyota
Corolla with over 325K miles on it that puts both of those to shame
while still getting over 30MPG. sadly, we haven't had anywhere near as

Some of you will recall my write up of the intermittent loss of power
braking on my 1983 300TD, coupled with the loss of engine shut off (won't

line, and happily the problem disappeared for nearly a week.

The issue then resurfaced, but now the following  symptoms occur all the
 time:

 1) Power brakes completely gone - must apply extremely forceful pressure on
the brake pedal (or petal, if you prefer).

 2) Cannot shut off the engine with key - must be done manually

 3) Vacuum door locks completely inoperative, even with the engine running.

Otherwise, everything else on the car works fine.

Whoever is the first to successfully diagnose this problem, based solely on
the symptoms enunciated above, wins a coveted ATTABOY.

 Good luck.

Subject: [MBZ] 123 fuel sender and hubcap

Last call.  Does anyone have a 123 fuel sender or a midnight blue hubcap
for a 123?  I've had no positive responses so far.   If you have one or the
other, let me know.   It looks like I will have to find a junkyard on
 car-part.com.

Re: [MBZ] Someone in IL needs this 116

2014-10-06 Thread astrasfogel--- via Mercedes

They were never badged as 450SE L 6,9. Just 6.9 on lower right corner of
trunk lid,  sometimes with 450 SE L as well on the left corner

mercedes@okiebenz.com:
Exactly.  The car is a 450SEL (long wheel base W116) with a 6.9L
instead of a 4.5L V8.  This is standard MB badging -- if the W116 had
originally had the 6.9 as designed, it would be badged as a 690SEL.
Fat chance on that, there was a very substantial difference in price
point, that 6.9L is VERY expensive.
Obviously there are other diffrerences, but MB names the car line by
the original engine size (4.5L = 450, etc) as a rule, then later
modifications will get a badge on the right side.
Hence a 300D 2.5 Turbodiesel for the 5 cylinder 2.5L turbocharged
engine in the W124 chassis, which originally had the 3.0L OM603
instead of the 2.5L OM602.
Just how MB names cars.

I bought a 78 SL C for cheap that had several broken linkage  bushings. Very

hope to remember it if I ever need it.

accelerator linkage on
the firewall of the red TD.
Had that happen on a 450SEL-on the side of the interstate!  No
good atall.
Wound up sticking in a small socket in lieu of the bushing, which
held me
until I got home and could order a replacement...

Actually, the discussion was mainly about nomenclature of an AR-15, and whether
it is properly called a carbine, a rifle, or an assault rifle.
Actually, firearms are much closer to Mercedes content than are apple trees;
since they are both the pinnacle of mechanical technology of their time.
I'm not opposed to discussing hardware, be it small arms, watches, washing
machines, iPhone, or ‎Mercedes.
Just don't mix in emotion, and or politics.

How about a cheap new vehicle.
Lease a smart ED with the battery assurance plus (BAP).
Note that MBUSA has captured and retained the $7500 federal incentive, but it's
passed on to you anyway.
The finance charges on the lease work out to about 1%.
Anyhow, the official deal is $999 down and $139/mo for 36 months, with 30k
miles over the life of the lease.
In Maryland, with taxes, tags, destination fee, etc, it's $3250 down (but it
qualifies for a $2200 rebate from MD MVA) and $145/mo.

Prius get 40 to 45 mpg minimum on the highway.  Plug-in Prius gets 95 mpg
 combined city and highway.

A Prius for me would be a problem, I do way too much open road

They do great in town, but not so good long distance.

My uncle likes his, bought it when they first came out, but he hasn't
driven outside suburban conditions for decades.

It's in Towson, MD (21204); I thought I would give everyone here a shot at it

It was running well until it abruptly stopped, mangling the front end.
