[MBZ] wheels and winter tires
For those of you who I may have spoken with off-list regarding wheels for winter tires for my '84 300D, I've obtained, refinished, and had my new winter tires mounted so I'm ready for one trip north each winter. [MBZ] next step - Lubro Moly Valve Clean
Since replacing the #4 #5 fuel injectors had no effect on the rough idle and smoking upon cold startup in my '85 300TD, I thought I'd use a procedure which one of our listers had previously suggested for Lubro Moly Diesel Purge, where it was suggested to empty the fuel filter of diesel fuel, fill the fuel filter with Lubro Moly Valve Clean, and drive the car. Since I couldn't locate any Lubro Moly Valve Clean locally, I had to mail order it and it arrived today. The directions on the can only mentions gasoline engined cars and the fact that one can (150cc) will treat 19 gal. so I'm a little apprehensive about using the fuel filter procedure as I'm wondering if this high a concentration of this stuff would be safe in a diesel? [MBZ] no change after I changed the #4 5 fuel injectors
I started and ran my '85 300TD a little while ago and it still has a rough idle and smokes upon a cold startup, but warms up in 2-3 min. and then the idle is as smooth as an old diesel will get and the smoking ceases, so there's no change after I changed the #4 5 fuel injectors yesterday. [MBZ] kudos to Rusty who goes the extra mile
Those of us who've been on this list for awhile are all familiar with the service and prices which Rusty provides, so I won't waste any bandwidth on that subject. Regarding the saga of my '85 300TD smoking upon cold startup, my next venture into possibly resolving this issue was to install new fuel injectors for #4 #5 cylinders as these were the cylinders which had displayed lower compression than the other three cylinders. Since my workshop manual suggests using new fuel injector nozzle plates when replacing fuel injectors, I obtained these as well from Rusty. Upon taking out the old fuel injectors and retrieving the old fuel injector nozzle plates using a magnet, the darn things flipped on edge so I couldn't tell which side is supposed to be up/down. I took photos of both sides of the fuel injector nozzle plates and sent Rusty an Email and he responded with the correct installation orientation in time for me to get things back together before dinner. Kudos Rusty! I'm planning on starting and running the car tomorrow AM to see if the fuel injector replacement has solved the smoking upon cold startup . . . I'll let ya' know. G. M. Since I can't believe no dieseler on this list hasn't tried this stuff in their diesel, I thought maybe I'd attempt to post this query again assuming that it may have been overlooked. Has anyone on the list used Lubro Moly Valve Clean in their W123 diesel? Before replacing the injectors in #4 5 cylinders, as these were the ones which showed low compression in a compression test which was an attempt to get to the cause of the serious smoking upon cold startup of my '85 300TD, I thought I might try this stuff first. [MBZ] '85 300TD rough idle and serious smoking upon cold startup
I've posted a query about this previously but didn't obtain much to look for regarding my '85 300TD rough idle and serious smoking (white) upon cold startup. After ~ 2 min. warmup, the idle smooths out and the smoking ceases. Note: the car does not burn any oil, nor does it lose any coolant and the glow plugs and circuit are all OK. I took the car to a M-B indy in town and they suggested possibly low compression, so I had them do a compression check on a cold engine and they obtained the following compression check numbers: #1 Cyl. 430 psi #2 “445 “ #3 “430 “ #4 “320 “ #5 “320 “ This shop said the M-B spec for the maximum pressure deviation between cylinders should be no more than 43.51 psi and they question either sticking oil rings in #4 #5 or misadjusted valves. Since I do my own valve adjustments on both my '84 300D and my '85 300TD, I'm convinced the last valve adjustment (1000 mi. ago) is OK and the rough idle and serious smoking issue was present when my brother owned the car, but it's easy enough to check the valve clearances which I plan on doing tomorrow. Also note, for those who may not remember, at the suggestion of possibly the best M-B mechanic in the Pbgh. area, I replaced the valve stem seals on the 300TD in summer 2011. Any suggestions? G. M. Re: [MBZ] How to restore a cracked blue W123 dash
Since there had been so many posts regarding this topic, I sent a JPEG pix the other day of the dash pad installation in my '84 300D but, the last time I sent a pix, it took Kaleb greater than a week to approve it and it was finally posted. So, for those who want to know what the Coverlay type dash cover/pad looks like in a W123, you'll just have to wait. By the way, the color match isn't perfect but my opinion is that it sure looks better than the cracked dash. Since I had owned a '76 450SL with Bamboo MB-Tex, and I now have an '84 300D and an '85 300TD both with blue MB-Tex, and my brother has an '85 300D with the black vinyl on top of the dash and, from this limited sampling, the blue MB-Tex dash has cracked more than the Bamboo MB-Tex in the SL, and the black cover on my brother's '85 300D has yet to crack. [MBZ] '84 300D CC Hi fan speed
1. After the CC stopped working abruptly in my '84 300D (Note: laquer stripped and resoldered 12/10/08 and had been working fine since then) during a trip north over the holidays, I got around to installing this CC in my '85 300TD and it didn't work there, but the one in the TD (Note: laquer stripped and resoldered 10/19/10) is working fine. I guess I'm gonna' try resoldering the pc board in the CC amp from the '84 300D to see if this resolves this issue. It has been suggested that either the CC vacuum actuator or the speed sensor may be the culprit, but my trial/error testing thus far seems to indict the CC amp. 2. The Hi fan speed (top button on the PBU) in my '84 300D hasn't been operating at a high speed for quite some time. I'd hazard a guess that the Hi speed is possibly equivalent to the 3rd fan speed as it's noticably slower than where it used to operate and slower than the Hi fan speed in my '85 300TD. I measured the blower resistors resistances and both the '84 300D '85 300TD are the same. I also switched the blower speed regulator (1147 328026, 000 822 1103; the black plastic box up behind the glove box) from the '84 300D to the '85 300TD and vice versa, and I still get a slow Hi fan speed in the '84 300D whereas the '85 300TD Hi fan speed operates normally. [MBZ] '84 300D fan speed
I wonder if anyone on the list has experienced something similar and might be able to suggest a cure. The fan speeds, as governed by the upper(6th speed) and lower(1st speed) have for about the last year or so been providing what feels like possibly the 3rd speed(upper push button) and 1st speed(lower push button). Also, the fan speed when the defrost push button is depressed in my '84 300D is similar to that obtained when the upper push button is depressed. Note: This oddity does not appear to be related to the ACC PBU, as the ACC PBU from my '85 300TD, which operates fine in the TD, provides the same low fan speed operation when installed in my '84 300D. [MBZ] viola, max heat at all temp settings resolved
Some of you may remember that I have been having ACC/heat issues in my '84 300D for the last 2-3 years. The problem was that I would get max heat at all of the ACC PBU temperature wheel settings. I had previously switched out the monovalve inserts, the ACC Push Button Units, and the ACC Temperature Coltrollers (the electronic module up behind the glove box) individually from my brother's '85 300TD to the 300D when I was at his place last year and that didn't seem to change the odd behavior in the 300D. The only thing I can think of is that I may not have allowed the car to warm up sufficiently enough and/or didn't allow enough time for things to equilibrate. I then resoldered the PC boards in both the ACC Push Button Unit, and the ACC Temperature Coltroller from the 300D and this didn't help. Since purchasing my brother's 300TD, I switched out the monovalve inserts, the ACC Push Button Units, and the ACC Temperature Coltrollers individually again from the '85 300TD to the 300D and found that the ACC Temperature Coltroller from the 300D was apparently the culprit. Since I spent so much time messin' around with the PC board of the ACC Temperature Controller from the 300D, a component or two on the board must've gone south, so I purchased a used ACC Temperature Coltroller and viola the heat is now controllable with the ACC PBU temperature wheel settings. [MBZ] glow plugs - live learn
I had an experience yesterday where my '84 300D would not start and the dash glow plug lite would not lite and, since the glow plug fuse is fine, I checked the resistance (Fluke VOM) of the Bosch glow plugs which I installed in '06. I found two of the plugs (#3 4) had infinite resistance so I installed a couple of the original Behr glow plugs pulled in '06 and still reading good. I've since ordered a set of Behr glow plugs from Rusty. Is this a common occurance where the Behr glow plugs have substantially greater longevity than the Bosch glow plugs? Note: I purchased this car in '96 from the estate of the original purchaser and, since the M-B dealer from where it was originally purchased was closing its doors, I obtained all the service records for this car and found no glow plug replacements. Re: [MBZ] aftermarket window seals
I can't speak to the quality of the aftermarket rear window seal which Rusty has but I can relate an episode which the Safelite folks had with an aftermarket front windshield seal for my '84 300D last year, as it took them a couple hours and a lot of sweat before they realized that it couldn't possibly fit. [MBZ] AC Freeze 12
Since I had my '84 300D converted to R134a many moons ago when there was indication that R12 would no longer be available, the AC in this car has never been really good on hot days even when the R134a has been topped up. The '85 300TD I purchased from my brother this past year had never been converted from R12 and hadn't had a recharge in many years, so I had a Freeze 12 charge with fresh oil added. Since the Freeze 12 in the 300TD seems to cool things down a lot better than the R134a in the 300D (Note: returning from a visit about 15-18 mi. during an afternoon when the outside temp. was ~86-88F and humid, I ended up turning the temp. wheel off MIN and the fan setting to low; it reminded me of a GM car) I'm considering switching from the R134a to Freeze 12 in the 300D after I do some troubleshooting/comparing of the performance of the ACC system as per J. Cathey's troubleshooting guide. The ACC system in my 300D does not have air blowing through the center dash vents when the AC is on and I get maximum heat no matter where the temperature wheel is set, whereas the ACC system in the 300TD seems to operate fine so I hope I get some clue as to the cause of the maladies with the ACC in the 300D. [MBZ] belts installation oddity
I recently installed new fan/drive belts on my '85 300TD '84 300D and, other than the belt for the AC compressor being rather difficult to get on the pulleys, I noticed somewhat of an oddity with the two belts which go to the alternator and H2O pump in that they were slightly different lengths as there's ~ 3/4-1 play in the one belt whereas the other is hardly compressable with the index finger. The same observation on both cars and, since this was really not a fun job, I am not thinking of changing them to mix/match the lengths of these belts. Re: [MBZ] Spare Tire
The normal degradation in tires due to wear, road hazards, etc. are visual but damage from sunlight (UV) can cause C=C double bond breakage and deterioration and visible cracking of polymers and this along with heat may cause off-gasing of internal lubricant (e.g., phthalates in vinyl dashes) accelerating this process. [MBZ] (no subject)
Amost done, all I've gotta' do now is adjust the #3-5 cylinder's valves and put things back together and hopefully this may solve the excess smoking upon cold startup on my '85 300TD. A couple things which may be of interest to others: 1. Trimming 1/8 3/16 inch from the bottom of the plastic sleeves used over the tops/threaded portion of the valve stem when installing new valve stem seals to prevent damaging the new valve stem seals will allow enough room between the top of the valve stem and the cam so these sleeves don't get crinkled and useless on a single use. 2. I recorded the position of each cma lobe when each cylinder was at TDC: #1 piston/cylinder @ TDC: exhaust valve cam lobe @ 3 O’clock position intake valve cam lobe @ 11 O’clock position Note: aligning marks on cam and rocker arm tower, crank position mark = 0 is the easiest way to get #1 piston/cylinder @ TDC #2 piston/cylinder @ TDC: exhaust valve cam lobe @ 11 O’clock position intake valve cam lobe @ 3 O’clock position #3 piston/cylinder @ TDC: exhaust valve cam lobe @ 3 O’clock position intake valve cam lobe @ 11 O’clock position #4 piston/cylinder @ TDC: exhaust valve cam lobe @ 11 O’clock position intake valve cam lobe @ 3 O’clock position #5 piston/cylinder @ TDC: exhaust valve cam lobe @ 9 O’clock position intake valve cam lobe @ 5 O’clock position G. [MBZ] Becker Grand Prix presets '84 300D
What am I doin' wrong? As per the instructions in the owner's manual, I pushed a particular preset (e.g. F4) and cleared this preset by hitting the * button which cleared the window. I then pushed F9, F1, F9 (e.g. 91.9FM) and this particuler station is displayed, but the radio reverts to the original station which was on preset F4 prior to hitting the * button when I change to another preset and switch back to F4. [MBZ] ain't our old MBs great
Forwarded from a friend: How to Lock Your Car and Why I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening While traveling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase.you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.. They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you. When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen. This is very real. Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code...and whatever was in our car. G. M. [MBZ] The W123 of vacuum cleaners
Just a word (or two) about central vacs. I installed a Sears central vac in a two story colonial back in the 80s . . . don't want to relive this even as a nightmare. My SO at the time had invited a Kirby salesman to the house for a free demo and rug cleaning. Since he had a clear plexiglas substitute intake housing for the Kirby, one could easily see the performance. He had distributed some sand like material on the fairly deep pile rug and I used the newly installed central vac to vacuum this stuff to my satisfaction that I thought I had gotten all of it. Surprise, surprise, the Kirby managed to vacuum up more of the sandy stuff after I had given up with the central vac. Final note: she got the house and I got the central vac which is still operating great. G. M. [MBZ] $3.99 Mobil One, addendum
Guys, I recently purchased an '85 300TD from my brother and this car had been previously diagnosed with valve stem seals which need replacing as there's considerable oil smoke after startup from cold but disappears after ~ 5 min. of running. Since I seem to recall the honorable Dr. Booth indicating that synthetic oils tend to swell seals more than conventional/dino oils, I thought I'd try synthetic oil in the TD for a couple oils changes to see if this improves things before I seriously consider trying to replace the valve stem seals. Since I've only got a few hundred miles on the first synthetic oil change in the TD and the offer at Advance would be just too good to pass up, I thought I'd purchase some of the Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel truck oil ahead of time for the next oil change but the Advance Auto Parts store employee indicated that this oil is not on sale and I tried the purchase on the Net approach, where someone has indicated that the discount would show up in the cart electronically . . . Note: this does not occur. G. M. [MBZ] how to correctly remove the windshield washer squirters
Due to a hood repaint of my '85 300TD by a previous owner with incompatible paint I'm considering removing the hood, stripping to bare metal, sanding, priming , and taking the hood to a local paint guy who has agreed to paint it for for me. [MBZ] another success
I had similar success some years back when I stripped the lacquer from and resoldered the CC PCB in my '84 300D as it's been working fine ever since and, now that I recently acquired an '85 300TD with a spastic CC, I've done the same with this one and tested it the other day and all functions are working fine . . . a far cry from the unusual performance of the resoldered (3X) ACC PB unit in my '84 300D, as it's still maximum heat no matter the setting of the temp wheel. I may go to a local junkyard which I've found has a few MBs and see what they want for an ACC PB and temp. controller unit. G. M. [MBZ] Stereo lite on Becker Grand prix radio in '85 TD
In case this has happened to anyone previously and you can suggest what to look for, the Stereo lite on the Becker Grand Prix radio in my '85 TD stays on after I turn the engine off and pull the ignition key out. I've tried turning the radio off 1st before turning the engine off and pulling the ignition key out, but this doesn't seem to help. If I wait ~ 5 min. and insert the ignition key to the ON position after the radio has been turned off prior to shutting off the engine and pulling the ignition key, the Stereo lite will go out. [MBZ] LF RR electric windows in '85 TD
I deserve 5 demerits! Since a couple listers seemed determined that the LF/RR window inoperation may be due to a fuse problem. I took another look and this time actually read the fuse diagram/layout correctly as fuse A is for the RF/LR and fuse B is for the LF/RR windows. Well, fuse A was quite corroded and when replaced all is fine . . . I know, I know, don't rub it in too much. G. M. [MBZ] where the tach is attached to the transmission
Can someone direct me to where the tach is attached to the transmission on an '85 300TD? My left front and right rear windows are inoperative and I suspect the ice cube sized relay behind the instrument cluster but the instrument cluster won't move far enough to allow my hand to enter. [MBZ] LF RR electric windows in '85 TD
While taking the door upholstery apart on my newly acquired '85 300TD in order to use rust converter and undercoating/rustproofing on the interior of the doors, I started with the LF door the other day and the electric windows for this door and the RR door stopped working after reassembly. I figured it may be the ice cube size window relay up behind the instrument cluster, as I had this problem with my '84 300D some years ago and unplugging and replugging this relay resolved the problem. But since there doesn't seem enough room to get my paws in behind the instrument cluster to disconnect the speedometer, oil pressure line, and electrical connector in order that I may remove the instrument cluster and deal with the window relay. I pulled the LF door upholstery back off today in order to check the electric window ground and voltage. Ground is good and, when I was measuring the voltage across the terminal block on the door the electric window motor was making some faint noises as if it was trying to operate. I thought that to be odd, disconnected my voltmeter and operated the LF electric window switch and the bloody window operated. I checked the RR window and it operated as well. I reassembled the LF door upholstery and you guessed it, the LF and RR windows are inoperative again. Clue(s)? TIA. G. M.
