[MBZ] [Mercedes] Accident, how to determine fair value?

2005-11-24 Thread kweimer

Tom,
Expect a ridiculously low-ball number from the adjuster. I had a 1976 300D
'totaled' because they couldn't find the parts for it (fender, air filter,
headlamp, bumper, etc, which I actually already had in my backyard as
spares. She offered me $750 and I could keep the car. I always insist
that I keep the car. I laughed at her offer and told her to start with
$1,500 and we would have a serious conversation. She immediately said If
you will settle for $1,500 we can settle today. I picked up my check an
hour later.

This was a year ago...I'm still driving the car.

I don't know about Waffle Houses in North Georgia, but where I live in the
Atlanta metro area...Conyers in particularWaffle Houses here have yellow
signs that prohibit entering the Waffle House with a firearmtake time to
read that yellow sign high up on the wall on the end of the parking lot. Only
one Waffle House in my town has the old white sign...I don't go into Waffle
Houses that have the yellow sign. If I can't go in with my Colt .45, I don't
go in. Same with Pawn Shops that have No Loaded Firearms Permitted on the
front door or window.

i agree with that. i think gun control is a great contributor to crime.
walk into any waffle house in North Georgia and every man is armed. think
there are a lot of robberies of waffle houses in north georgia?

i don't like the pit bulls though. they are dangerous animals. you can't
watch the news without hearing about another child mauled by the neighbors pit
bull. i'm yet to hear this story involving a golden retriever.

better when you were hung for stealing a horse and nearly everyone carried a
firearm. Even a stupid criminal will think twice if they KNOW that the
intended victim is armed.

Hopefully easily answered by someone who knows.

What am I supposed to use for power steering fluid? Is it AT fluid and if
so, basic GM type fluid? I stuck my finger in it and that is certainly
what
 it appears to be.

Second question - on the side of the resevoir there is a line which I
assume
marks the appropriate level. Is this the right level hot or cold? My level
seems a bit low (an inch or more below the line) but I am reluctant to
 overfill it.

[MBZ] Convince Me

2005-06-24 Thread kweimer
I have always wanted one of these old diesel beasts

Randy,
Just my opinion, but I think the 114/115 series, especially the diesel is
the best car Mercedes ever built. The major fault I find with the design is
that they built the car around the heater blower motor. Ordinarily I will
not buy a Mercedes later than 1976the last of the 114/115 series. I
have 720,000 miles on a 1970 220D. A 76 300D is my daily driver. I did
venture into buying an 82 300SD which has one cylinder with zero compression
and a leakdown test of 100% pressure loss...a hole in the piston? I haven't
had the interest in fixing it even though it starts instantly (major skip,
of course) simply because, to me, the 126 is like driving a big boat. The
'76 300D is much more nimble and maneuverable which translates into easy U
turns and parking. I do think $7K is too much for a '75 (the 300D you
mention is probably a '75 rather than a '74...I think the 300D first came
out in 1975...I could be wrong. Just my opinion, folks. Don't be mad at
me.

 Ken,
What brand and model of tire changer do you use?

At 01:55 PM 6/23/05, you wrote:

I use one every time I need to mount a tire. I buy my tires loose,
mount
and balance them myself. The bubble balancer works well...you can
balance a
tire with it. Better than letting a tire jockey strip your mounting lugs
or
torque them to 400 ft/lbs so you can't change a tire on the road.

Anybody ever used one of those manual tire changers like you can get
at
harbor freight? Thinking about getting one of those and a manual tire
balancer. Have heard you can get tires balanced pretty darn good with
a
plain old manual bubble balancer. Just wondered how good the manual
changer worked though. Would rather have a pneumatic one though but
   those are too expensive.

I'm looking at an 85 300D, and it has a transmission problem - it
won't shift until about 4000 RPM. Seller claims it's a vacuum
adjustment that's needed, but I trust this guy as far as I can throw
him. What's the real deal?

Also, if said car hasn't been started in a few months (aka sittin),
what do I need to do to get it started and running properly again?
This is assuming it was running properly when it was last shut off.
