Andrew, We had pawpaw trees in Southern WV. I ate pawpaws when I was young. I don't remember the early bloom as Feb would be too cold, maybe mid March. I remember some of the trees being 10-12 feet in height and they did tend to grow in the shade of large oaks or maples. Great fruit to eat and a preferred meal of various wildlife as well. Re: [MBZ] Batteries
I've used the Bosch 49 battery with both of my 617 engines (123, 116). They fit perfect, last a long time, and have a great warranty. The price has gone up a lot. My last purchase not that many years ago was only $99.00. If you have a 116, 123, or 126, I think you'll be very satisfied with this battery. Just some info to add... Dan, I love sandwiches. Hence too much bread intake. When I lay off the bread (behavior modification), I can loose 5 lbs in a 3-4 days. I think it also helps to add more water and less soda or fruit juice. To me, it's all about cutting out the foods that hang around (on your waist and butt). And yes Kaleb, some Benzes have two carbs, but I've always stuck to the injected diesels (altho' I did have two carb Corvairs when I was in college). Good luck to all in these endeavors... Well, I guess at this point the only question that remains is, "which Mercedes model/year contains the most carbs and which the fewest?" I always thought the SLs looked a little fruity while the Unimogs and full size sedans must contain high amounts of sugars and carbs. Knowing the facts about the different models will let you match yourself with the car you drive. It's nice to know a lot of you are trying to stay healthy. Myself...breads are the weight problem. I've always found that you only need an "active user community" when you have a complex product or one with diverse problems/issues. Re: [MBZ] big oil dying (again)
I can't believe you guys are missing the obvious. The energy answer is the "flux capacitor". We can convert garbage to energyand we all know we have way too much garbage in this world. Or maybe the methanol out of landfills and convert it to synthetic diesel. Or maybe something that hasn't been thought of yet. I still remember when solar would be the answer, then wind, then coal gasification, and so on. We probably need a mix a many things, but most of all those things need to pay for themselves without expecting the average taxpayer to fund someone else's energy. Remember the company a few years back that got $650 million from the government and then went belly up? Keep looking. Similar to the X Files, the answer is out there. Re: [MBZ] WAS RESTORED ** 1979 - NOW oil issues
Well, I don't plan on causing oil leaks by using synthetic in an engine that's not leaking while I'm waiting for the synthetic oil to reseal the leaks it created. I also remember that Marshall was always working on his 190 engines. He always used to tell me how clean his engines were inside with synthetic oil when he removed the head. I always told him that my 617s on dino oil did not require a head removal or head work, therefore, I wasn't going to pull the heads just to compare. Again, I can only state my experience with my cars while living here in the South. As always, your experience, needs, and results can be different. Use what feels right for you and your car. Re: [MBZ] RESTORED ** 1979 MERCEDES BENZ 300SD ** BUY 4 SHOW OR AS DAILY CAR!! $8999
Curt, When I got my Dodge, it was an off lease that had roughly 100,000 miles. It had been run with dino 10w30, forget the brand. I switched it to Valvoline Maxlife 10w40 for engines with over 75K. Both main seals were dry and I wanted to keep it that way. But I was tempted at one point and put in Mobil synthetic. As I said, it did not turn out well, but switching back to Valvoline stopped the leaks. I change oil and filter on the truck and both diesels around 3-3.5K miles. The Escape using Mobil synthetic I change at 7500. It uses 1 to 1.5 quarts between change, burns some I guess and leaks some from the valve covers. I asked the Ford dealership about running a thicker oil, but I was told the oil ports in the 3.0 V6 are too small to risk running a thicker oil. I think it uses 5w20 or 0w20, can't remember right off. My 83 300D has a block heater, but being in the South, I've only used it once or twice in 20+ years. For some reason, the 300D will start faster at colder temps than the 300SD even though they have basically the same 617 engine. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] RESTORED ** 1979 MERCEDES BENZ 300SD ** BUY 4 SHOW OR AS DAILY CAR!! $8999
Gee guys, don't want to start an oil war. Anyway, if I lived "up North" which I used to, I would not own a diesel, but that's just my choice. As to the oil, I've said before, my Indie put synthetic in my 1980 300SD once, it started leaking a lot, so I returned to him with 2 gallons of Mobil 1 Delvac 15x40 and he replaced the oil. Shortly thereafter, the leaking returned to the normal seeping. I also use Mobil 1 Delvac 15x40 in my 1983 300D. The 300SD has over 425,000 miles and has never had the head off or any other engine work. The 300D has over 360,000 miles and the same applies. I also tried synthetic in my 2001 Dodge Ram 5.9 engine truck. It started to leak out of the front and rear main seals. I returned it to the Valvoline Max and the seals resealed themselves in short order. I do run Mobil synthetic in my Ford Escape v-6 which my daughter gave me. It was run on synthetic for the first 100,000, so I continue to use it for oil changes. My position is that you should use the oil that makes you feel comfortable regardless of what anyone else uses. Your experience will be yours as mine will be mine. Good luck and best wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Kaleb, I don't know what the zundfogle engine is. Mine is just the last 617 version put in the 116 body. It has some different vacuum functions/connections for the tranny, plus the glow plug relay is different. And of course it has the Chrysler servo. These things all changed with the 1981 126 300SD. Well, since I have a 1980 300SD which I've had for over 20 years and had the leather and pads replacedI'll chime in here. It is leather and probably what you can still get. The paint should last awhile, mine was repainted about 15 years ago and still looks good, clear coat and all. Yes, he should have used the softer, felt/fleece look carpet, especially for up the console. This carpet is too harsh. As to the engine blow by and leaks, he may be using that wonderful synthetic oil. The old 617 turbos of that era don't tolerate synthetic that well and run better on dino. Yes, he's asking too much, but if you're interested, offer less and replace the carpet. Unlike the 126 with its plastic sides hiding rust and poor seat construction (they constantly rip), the old 116 will last forever. Mine is still going with around 425,000 miles and yes on dino oil. I've only replaced the tranny at around 420,000 and the interior as I said about 22 years ago. It still has the original exhaust, IP, turbo, etc. Just some personal info to add. Well, again, my only point is that if the airline and "police" can treat this man this way, then they can do it to you. I don't care what he is or did in the past, no one deserves to be treated that way. Now UA is saying they are going to pay everyone on that flight. Again, put yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment. You may think differently. I still think the gate personnel should have resolved this in the waiting area and NOT on the plane. Re: [MBZ] (Doctor?) dragged off United AIrlines flight
Very interesting. I've never seen so many "excuses" made for an industry which apparently can't schedule or book flights. Each flight has a break even point doesn't it? So, the plane doesn't have to be booked solid in order for the airlines to make money. And yes, doctors are more important than other people. If you don't agree, the next time you have a medical emergency, contact your nearest airline employee for help (or MB mechanic...MB content). If 4 people had to leave, remove the last 4 who boarded, simple. This random stuff is childish. The AMA should put United on its own "no fly list". Re: [MBZ] Oil pressure drop
Well, I don't know about anyone listening to old time MB folks...no one listens to me :-)) But, I've always used Mann in my two 617s and that was when they were both driven daily and had 3K oil changes with Mobil Delvac 15x40 dino oil. A few times I needed an oil change and couldn't get a Mann, I used STP oil filters. I was extremely surprised as they looked just like a Mann and at the next change, they were loaded with dirt/soot, just like the Mann when I changed so they cleaned the oil too. So, I agree that the Mann has worked best for me, but I wouldn't necessarily write off other potentially good filters, especially if you change every 3K. Now if you want to live on the edge and go 7-10K, you might want to stick with Mann exclusively. Just my thoughts. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. I just did it to lube the IP to replace the sulfur lube they used to get before diesel got "clean" to save us all. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] My 87 wagon runs poorly - what to do?
Max, Poor a pint or quart of trans fluid in the tank and run it through. It will lube everything in the system. If that doesn't help, it may be time to do what I always recommend...see a mechanic. Or...get an older 617. I'm sure Dan could fix you up with one that would only take 2-3 months to get in good running order and all your spare time :-) Good luck and best wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] The conclusion of the garbage disposal
Curt, I didn't need to look at the links and I DO understand the concept of the combo units and trying to save you the initial vacuum step with a regular vacuum cleaner. My sole points are: use a regular vac first for the big stuff and then pour the water outside. Or go ahead and tear up stuff using a combo unit and pouring the results down the garbage disposal, it's everyone's choice. Just trying to make a reasonable suggestion...use it or not. Re: [MBZ] The conclusion of the garbage disposal
Rick, I understand that. BUT, if you use a regular vacuum first, it makes the job better. Mixing the two tasks lets you end up with the problem Kaleb experienced. Re: [MBZ] The conclusion of the garbage disposal
The real moral of the story is: VACUUM YOUR CARPET BEFORE YOU USE THE CLEANER! All that junk would have been sucked into the vacuum which is use to it and not clog up the disposal. Kaleb, What are you doing with a cheap ($400) garbage disposal? Should be at least twice that and probably a Bosch to match the DW. I don't know if I'm just lucky or what but my disposal and DW are still going since 1999 when I built my house. And the DW is a Maytag, but I don't remember the disposal, GE maybe? Re: [MBZ] OT: cell foniness
I'm not sure why there's a problem with the iPhones, maybe the newer ones. When I switched to CC years ago, I had two Motorola flip phones. Later when the 2 towers went, I purchased two iPhone 3s on ebay for around $35.00 each. CC send me new sim cards, helped me make the switch, and get me connected. They will even help you with the phones features, even if you didn't purchase it from them. When my daughter gave me her iPhone 4, CC helped make the switch effortless. I don't use a lot of the phone features. I can get calls, text, internet/web, take pictures/movies, etc. Not sure what else I'd need or use. I say this having NO experience with an Android phone or knowing anyone that has experience with an Android phone. [MBZ] OT: cell foniness
Curley, go with Consumer Cellular and you won't be sorry. Tell them I recommended you and I get a credit. I've had CC for over 10 years. I switched from Verizon. I purchased two iPhone 3s from eBay (one for me, one for my wife). CC send me the sim cards for free, walked me through the setup, etc. CC has great customer service. I just get the basic plan as I don't use cell phones much. I also get my AARP discount. I've now changed to an iPhone 4 (daughter gave me her old phone) and the switch of phones was completely painless. Yes, they use ATT lines. I get great service everywhere I've been and that includes the mountains in Appalachia, except at home as I live down in a valley with lots of hills and trees so I only get 2 bars of service. I can still use it at home ok as long as I don't walk around while talking. Just some personal experience. Good Luck and best wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Larry, You should "vett" the shop for their competence. Years ago I was looking for a "closer" shop. I went into this shop and looked around, didn't like the organization or appearance of techs. I asked if anyone had 617 engine experience. The shop manager said a little and they had the manuals. Of course, I never went back. My too old Indies were my best. [MBZ] OT Windows 10 again
Randy, Go to support for whatever computer you have and check for any needed updates, especially the BIOS. There are chip instructions/features that Win10 wants that may not have been turned on in the original BIOS in your computer. It's good to keep your BIOS updated regardless. When I loaded Win10 on my two old Dell Vostros (200 and 220), I had to update the BIOS on the 200 in order for Win10 to load because the original BIOS was missing a feature. After updating the BIOS, Win10 loaded and has run fine since back in the Summer. Just some extra info to consider. Best Wishes and Happy Holidays, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] OT - Windows?
Curley, when I loaded Win10 over Win7, it kept most of my settings. So, aside from some small differences, it looks pretty much like Win7 on the surface. Now, as I said, some of the setting menus, etc. are different, but the search box quickly brings up whatever you're looking for so not a big problem. I think the shutdown, go to sleep stuff is somewhat of a carryover from Win7. I remember when Windows did updates and then rebooted. With both 7 and 10, it updates about 30%, reboots, and then completes as it reloads. I don't like this because it can get hung. I think the upgrade completely first and then reboot is the best approach. Just my thoughts... Best Wishes and Happy Holidays, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Well, I think I've listed this before in a previous discussion, but I've loaded Win10 on two old Dell Vostro Core2Duos running 4 gig of memory. They both are fine. I also loaded it on an HP Netbook, atom 1.6 processor and 2 gig of memory...it loads slow, but otherwise is ok. One of the Dells needed a BIOS upgrade. I liked Win 7 and I like Win10. I run the 64bit Pro version except on the Netbook which wants the 32bit version. You need to run through the menus just to see where things have been moved. Re: [MBZ] 2.3 Liter 4 Cylinder?
Well, if anyone has been following the DNC etal Wikileaks emails, you'll understand why there will be voter fraud. In the past it was harder when there was a paper trail, but now with mostly computers, the fraud will be easier, especially where IDs etc have been ruled against by liberal judges/courts. I trust a lot of Americans, I just rarely trust self centered, self serving ultra liberals. When the Clown News Network tells people not to read the Wikileaks emails, but wait for CNN to tell you what they meanthat is pretty low news / journalism...if you can call it that. I personally witnessed vote buying by the Democrat Party when I was a child. And I haven't seen a moral or ethical upswing in the DNC over the decades that I've been alive. Being a scientist or believing in statistics is no guarantee of a correct outcome. And I'd much rather have the facts than the truth. Again, just my opinion. As I've gotten older, I've seen too much to blindly trust too much. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. [MBZ] signs of the times
I put out two yard signs for Trump and they were both stolen. There is such a demand for his yard signs, they are hard to get. So, since I'm retired, I now go on the side of US78 here in Georgia and wave my signs at passing motorist. I've gotten a lot of honks, waves, and thumbs up. I haven't gotten one nasty response. Personally, if my neighbors support Hillary, it says a lot about their character, integrity, and desires for the future of the USA. As I live out in the country, neighbor contact is not a lot anyway. Curt, yes I know how fast the new oil turns black. I should clarify that when I remove the filter, it is really cruddy looking. Again, I just feel better about longevity with a shorter oil change. Re: [MBZ] Q for Larry
Well, I'll say this slightly tongue in cheek. I do know more than MB engineers because I would NEVER have put a Chrysler servo in an MB car. After have replaced that item many times in my 80 300SD, I have to wonder "what were they thinking"? Again, when I look at how dirty the oil is at 3K, I'm ok with the extra expense of a shorter change interval. And with no engine problems at 425,000 miles, I consider it a cheap price to keep the engine internals, IP, etc. working ok. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] Q for Larry
I would add to this that the 3K oil change is more important to a diesel than a gas engine. When I changed my diesels at 3K, I felt good about getting all the dirt and soot out of the engine. So, while it might be marketing, it was worth it to me. And the engines are still going strong after many years and many miles. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] Q for Larry
I'll add my usual different opinion on oil. I've used Mobil 1 Delvac 15x40 in my two old 617s for around 20 years. Neither one has had the head off nor any engine problems. One has around 425,000 miles and the other around 360,000 miles. I tried the other oils at first (Delo, Shell, etc.), but Delvac kept the oil pressure slightly higher when hot, was fine in the Winter (although I live in the Atlanta area, but have seen some cold), and really keeps the soot and dirt in circulation so it all drains out at the oil change. I always encourage people to use what works for them. I'm just passing on what has worked for years for me. And yes I used to drive a lot so I changed oil every 3K and that was sometimes every 1.5-2 months. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] OT: How can I resize a Windows partition?
Hey Curt, I guess maybe I'm confusing partitions with "tracks". In my NCR days, I was given the task of making a "boot disk" for an NCR DMV desktop. It ran NCR DOS and CP/M which had its "boot tracks" as the first tracks on a 5 1/4 flex disk. I had to find the UCSD Pascal boot tracks on an 8 inch floppy, which were at the end of the disk, and convert that to the first tracks on a 5 1/4 inch flex so the DMV could load UCSD Pascal as well as NCR DOS and CP/M (it was a really versatile machine, but lost out to IBM advertising for the PC XT). So, I guess these weren't "partitions" in the true since but rather "tracks" for so many "bytes" that the PCs boot rom read in order to call the OS from the floppy/flex disk to load itself. Wow, this brings back a lot of old fun, and not so fun, memories of old days work on PCs. Maybe I am getting "old" :-)) Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] OT: How can I resize a Windows partition?
Am I getting too old or have Window drives always had a small boot partition? When I worked on UCSD Pascal drives, they had a small boot partition. It was and still is my understanding that without the "small boot partition", the OS will never boot. I imagine all OSs have something they read to run certain tests etc. to confirm that the OS can in fact "load". So, am I getting old or just not understanding the issue here? Curt, Remember the Dallas episode where JR had drugs planted on an opponent and then arrested? Just a thought. I'm having trouble understanding some of the member opinions on this. Yes, we are free to do what we want, UNTIL it causes a problem for others. I have a neighbor who is a real a**hole and since I live in the country, I'm told you can do whatever you want in the country. My old civics teacher in high school many years ago summed up civic responsibility quite simply as, "my right to swing my arm ends where your nose begins". Re: [MBZ] OT: What's wrong with Mrs Clinton?
Well, after much research on the internet, the list archives, and other credible sources, I have come to the conclusion that Hillary suffers from the "devil biting her big fat rump". I watched her squirm in a chair yesterday while Joe Biden spoke (although a Biden speech might equate to a devil rump bite). I think more research should be done. I also think she should be evaluated by a good Dr. like Kevorkian or some of his associates. I'm certain Soros and the Clinton Foundation have enough funds to provide this checkup. I'm still trying to keep an open mind regarding her condition (so many varying reports in the media...not the mainstream media, but others who aren't afraid to speak), but at present, the devil theory seems to hold the most promise. Re: [MBZ] My new internet speeds
Kaleb, I hate to tell you this. I live East of Atlanta in the country and I have Comcast (Xfinity) cable. I only keep them because of the internet speed as measured on Speedtest.net which is: download: @ 90 mbps upload: @ 12-13 mbps Now, I'm somewhat saddened because my download was running around 98 mbps and since the scale only goes to 100, I was wondering what would happen if I went over. My SIL and daughter have Windstream (phone line) and they get maybe 3 mbps download and less than 1 mbps upload to which Windstream says they don't guarantee the speed they are charging you for. But they still get to charge you. All of these cable / internet outfits have bought the local politicians and state public service commissions so you have little chance of getting any meaningful help. One other thing that might help as it may be helping me. Years back when I was getting weak signal, Comcast installed a "signal booster" in my basement. Now a couple of years ago they replaced the line to my house (I live about 400 feet off the mainline and all cables are buried) and put a box in, but didn't take out the signal booster. I don't know that it helps, but it might be worth trying as I don't think they are that expensive. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Floyd, I've been advocating for years that the US should close its bases in Europe and bring the troops and equipment home to be stationed on our Southern border. It would serve two purposes. First, the troops could control the illegals coming across the border and also help stop the drug movements. Second, all the money the troops spend in Europe could be spent in USA border towns helping the economy here not to mention the cost of the bases would be transferred to US soil. I totally agree with Trump on this. If Europe would need help, we could still be there just like in WWI and WWII.
