[MBZ] 2007 E350 no start

2017-10-28 Thread Tom Savage via Mercedes
Hi everyone, long time no see.

A friend has a 2007 E350 wagon M272 with 140k miles that won't fire, it
just cranks and cranks. I pulled codes and it shows P0011 cam timing, bank
1 position A (intake); P0271 Powertain, which google says is associated
with the first code; and P0521 Oil pressure switch.

I checked the cam solenoid magnet and it had the common failure mode of oil
leaking through the connector at the top, so I installed a new one from the
dealer this morning. Still no start.

Anyone familiar with these engines? I keep reading about balance shaft
problems, but I'm not sure if that will cause a no start like this.

The P0521 looks like it may actually be a stuck flap in the intake
manifold, but I'm not seeing any association with a no start. This is hard
without a manual or proper diagnostic equipment!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tom

I used to have a cheap Wal Mart iron, and it was a cheap Wal Mart iron and
ironing clothes was a hassle. Then Misheil and I got a German-made Rowenta
as a wedding gift and it is hard to describe how nice an iron can actually
be.

We have an earlier version of this model and if it isn't the S-Class of
irons, I don't know what is. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FEBPG3G/

Not direct comparisons, but for what it's worth my creampuff E320 Bluetec
with 77k miles was worth $17k in January per my insurance company and my
research validated that.

The not-quite-as-nice '09 Bluetec that replaced it I purchased in Texas in
January for with 78k for $16,500. State Farm then valued it for $18,950 in
Missouri in March. If only the car had a title I could get a check for it.

Happy shopping. The W211 cars are really nice and don't be afraid of the V6
- it is a good mill and acompanied by a number of updates and the excellent
7-speed transmission. I have a few surplus maintenance items and parts for
these cars if you end up with one, since Kaleb seems to have lost interest.

They're at least trying to sell gassers. Most of the VW dealers I've
visited in the last week seem to be following the Mitsubishi model: a used
car dealer with a few new cars sitting in the showroom.

Gas model values are way down as well, if not as badly as the diesels. I
started looking for another W211 or W212 after the last wreck but decided
my heart just wasn't in it, so just bought a 2012 Golf 5-speed instead to
try the cheap commuter thing. It was half the cost of another Bluetec and
I'm really enjoying it so far.

FYI on MB Northlake, don't call to order parts. The website prominently
displays the phone number and doesn't state that you have to order online
to get the online price.

I had a shipping time question w.r.t. the holidays so I called to order...

Well, the repair estimate just by walking around the car and using "used,
reconditioned, or aftermarket" parts came to $14,500, so I guess it is
worse than it looks. Apparently an offset crash like that is particularly
difficult to straighten out.

On the upside, I settled with the insurance company on Friday after more
contretemps than should be necessary, and purchased a one-owner 2009
Bluetec with the same mileage for less than I got for my 2007. We pick it
up in Texas on Saturday.

[MBZ] Wrecked E320

2016-01-13 Thread Tom Savage via Mercedes
So the E320 Bluetec is a probable total after some jerk ran a stop sign on
Saturday. I'm a little sore but okay.

The adjuster had asked if I'd like to retain the car, and I'm thinking
about it since I'd like to replace it with the same model, and especially
since two weeks ago I spent over $1000 on tires, a steering angle sensor,
and maintenence.

Questions for those who have done this sort of thing: I am thinking I could
strip most of the trim, black boxes, and accessories from the car over a
weekend and eBay it over the next few months for easy money - what am I
missing? Pull the engine complete, or pull injectors, turbo, intake, etc
and list piecemeal? Not sure I have room to pull an engine in the garage.
And finally, am I delusional or is this an economically viable weekend(s)
activity? I do have plenty of room in the basement to store everything.

Thanks,
Tom

That is kind of the conclusion I've come to today. Looks like I can retain
the car for $3052 and maybe I lack vision, but I just don't see 4,000
"easy" dollars in it. I'm not very interested in eBaying a bunch of small
parts at $20 a throw.

Unless Kaleb wants it for $3052 plus a six pack...

This is good advice. I went to urgent care shortly after and checked out

Yeah, I was thinking $2000, maybe even $1500. Apparently being a diesel has

I built a pretty good rapport with the adjuster over the phone yesterday,

I also have the impression that the straight six is easier to work on.
The V6 has the turbo buried between the cylinder banks.
 --

An inline six is almost always preferable to a V6, cetaris paribus, but I
haven't found the V6 OM642 to be bad at all as far as maintenance is
concerned. The turbo is right up top (which is good since the inlet pipe
airways leaks oil), along with the fuel and oil filters, and there is
plenty of room to work at the front. The air filter arrangement is a little
goofy, though.

The V6 also comes with normal brakes and the 7 speed transmission, and the
general updates that came with the facelift in '07, but still has 16
wheels.

Fuel economy is not as good with the V6 due to the more restrictive diesel
particulate filter. Also it requires hard-to-find 229.52 oil to keep the
filter happy. No diesel smoke either; not sure if that is a bug or a
feature.

I couldn't find an '05-'06 worth buying and my Bluetec was a low mile Okie

Modern diesels have a different set of benefits than the older stuff. They
aren't anywhere near as simple. They won't run without electricity or
survive an EMP. You can't fix them with golf tees or pour cooking oil in
the tank as a party trick. They aren't drop dead reliable compared to their
contemporaries, as compared to, say, a W123 vs something with D-jet and a
distributor. They will not serve as taxis in Senegal thirty years from now.

The new stuff is all about efficiency, range, and torque. Torque is proof

technical aspects compared to every other silver E class out there. It is
still less expensive to operate than a gas E320 and I really like the car

and last I checked for cars newer than 1969. The rest of the state
has only safety inspections every two years.

As of a few years ago, only the St Louis area and only 1996 and newer
vehicles (1997 and up for diesels). It is just an OBD-II flash so only a
worry for the sort of folks who accept a check engine light as normal.

In other words, it is the bare minimum required by the Clean Air Act as a

Re: [MBZ] speed ratings of tires

2009-02-08 Thread Tom Savage

Tom Hargrave wrote:

Kaleb,

Speed rating is about a lot more then speed. Speed rating also affects how
the tires handle. H rated tires have much stiffer sidewalls than S rated
tires and since the tires are an active part of a car's suspension,
downgrading from H to S rating, particularly the front tires, will have a
negative impact on how the car handles. Downgrading also greatly reduces
front tire tread life because the more flexible sidewalls allow more tread
to be scuffed off in turns.

What he said. A 140 is a pretty hefty car and flimsy tires do it no
favors at all. I just put Bridgestone Turanzas on my S420 and they're
about the perfect tire for the car. Much nicer than the Michelins they
replaced, or the Contis or no-name POS tires on other 140s I've driven.

Expensive, but they have a 70k mile treadlife warranty which I expect to
collect on (these cars chew up tires pretty quickly), as long as I go
back to Firestone every 6,000 miles so they can rotate them and steal my
metal valve stem caps (again).

Actually, having spent an hour or so today diagnosing my 140's HVAC, I

300D. You just push a couple of buttons to enter diagnostic mode, and
it tells you the values for every sensor, module, and whatnot in the
system. All seven (or more) temperature sensor values, refrigerant
pressure, blower motor voltage, and so on. Then the manual tells you
where everything is, what the values should be, and how to test it, so
diagnosis is just a matter of knowing how to use a multimeter.

This compared with chasing vacuum leaks all over creation. The only
downside is that you can't fix a 140 with a golf tee. And later 140s
have a much simpler ACC interface.

There's a new prefix in town, too. X, for, I guess, SUV variants of

Well little Tommy just got done looking at said car for me. Overall
nice shape. Said the valve cover is broken right above the chain, cant
remember if he said on drivers or passenger side. Said there is a whole
there and you can see that the chain is still intact and not broken. So,
what do you guys think this means? Valves probably OK but front timing
cover has to be pulled to replace the rails?

The hole is on the left/driver's side in front of the intake cam. The
chain is there but was loose. I connected the battery and turned it
over and it both turned fine and sounded fine. It even fired once or
twice, but the battery was so low that it could only muster a few
revolutions before slowing down. After this the chain was tight on the
sprocket.

I'm thinking it is a chain guide/tensioner problem. There must have
been a good bit of slack in the chain for it to come up and hit the
valve cover. Now wondering if it jumped time a tooth or two and how
much room for error there is between the valves and pistons.

Interesting. The air cleaner doesn't really obscure the timing chest,

If it is just the B2 that's a reasonably easy fix, assuming nothing else
is wrong. The rebuild motor could be good or bad, depending.

Sure sounds like a B2. All 722.3, .4, and (I think) .5 transmissions
use the same B2 setup, but really only the early .3s are likely to have
problems. The updated designs do still fail, though, as happened in my
old 300D.

That aluminum V8 is mighty expensive to rebuild and the average shop is
likely to make a hash of it. Check the receipts carefully.

W still means Germany/West Germany. The next two are a manufacturer's

South Africa should start with A. Maybe they're only assembling
