Good point.

Something to be very careful about on these older high mileage CIS cars:

Seals in the fuel distributor, specifically the seal on the plunger that’s on 
the bottom of the fuel distributor, can leak. It’s not difficult to replace, 
but any kind of tinkering with the fuel distributor can be very tricky unless 
you are very, very careful.

My last 300SE had really lousy mileage, which for the short time I owned it I 
couldn’t figure out until (I think Peter) suggested I check the plunger seal. 
Sure enough, it was leaking and as a result I was getting in the low teens when 
I should have been getting in the high teens. I rolled the dice and sold the 
car as-is to a guy who knew nothing about it and assured me that he could sort 
it because he’s “worked on American cars all my life.”

I had visions of him with the fuel distributor in pieces on his workbench…

gasket and valve guides somewhere in that time. If it runs well and doesn’t 
burn oil it’s good.

gas tank to clear up all the stale gas and residue.
