Unless you have the time and enjoy the work, it sounds to me like it's a parts

You should be able to find a decent replacement, even a nice upgrade, much less
money than it will cost to fix this one up, given everything you've listed and
now the seized engine.

Re: [MBZ] 300D crapped out on way to work

2010-06-18 Thread R A Bennell
Don't assume the worst until you are able to prove it.

An analogy if you will:

We were riding down the lake in one of our boats a couple of years back. My
younger son was driving. I said
something to him and he did not hear me so he cut the throttle back to reduce
noise and the engine - a 35HP
Evinrude - stopped suddenly. We thought that a bit odd but just thought it had
stalled. It would not turn over when
he tried to start it. We assumed the battery was low but it would not turn over
on the rope start either. Engine
appeared to have seized. We managed to get home and have a look at it. Pulled
the lower unit and that freed the
engine. Dismantled the lower unit - prop shaft - and learned that a part of the
shifter had broken. I assume, that
it stayed in place until he cut back on the throttle, at which point it fell
into the gears and locked the lower
unit. That stalled the engine.

About $400 worth of parts as I did not spend the time to look for a used pinion
gear. The one gear was damaged and
it was expensive - over $200 for it alone. Apart from that, we used the
opportunity to replace some of the seals
and bearings and of course the broken shifter link.

Could be something similar. Look for something that will prevent the engine
from turning before assuming it is
actually a seized engine.

Re: [MBZ] 300D crapped out on way to work

2010-06-18 Thread E M
As I said, I missed several posts to this thread, so I'm probably repeating
myself.

Is the engine seized? Will it turn over when you crank it? If it turns,
but won't catch, check for all the simple stuff first. Fuel ? Spark ?
Could be as simple as a hunk of crud made its was to the fuel filter. Skip
spark, it's a diesel, right. hee hee. If the engine sounds like it's
turning, but not catching, have you checked the chains? Probably make a bit
of a bang being chains when they let go, but when they, or belts go, the
engine will often crank, but that's all it will do. If the engine seized
while in motion, I would imagine some interesting things would have happened
to the rear tires while going down the road. lol.

Good luck, and as others have said, start with the simple stuff first, and
don't right it off until you know the core cause of the problem.

I sure hope it isn't a seized engine at the same time as a seized engine.
But that seems unlikely if the temp and oil pressure gauges were reading
normally.
If the starter failed to disengage, would you get 40 miles before it seized bad

Did it make strange noises or just stop? One would think it the engine was
seizing there might be some unusual
noises.

A friend had the engine oil pump give up in traffic on a bridge (in a 240D)
and it essentially ruined the engine
before he figured out what was happening and stopped but I don't think his
engine actually seized.

I sure hope it isn't a seized engine at the same time as a seized engine.
But that seems unlikely if the temp and oil pressure gauges were reading
normally.
If the starter failed to disengage, would you get 40 miles before it seized bad
enough to stop the engine?

What we have here is a 04 ford f150 4x4 that I put a Mercedes 5 cylinder 2.7
diesel in. the motor has about 25k on it so it has about 275k left to run. i
did all the work myself. and can tell you anything that you'd like to know.
It has the motor and the trans from a 03 dodge sprinter mounted with a
divorced manual transfer case setup. the 4x4 works and I got around 20
running it around last winter. it will get around 32mpg per GPS on the
highway, 22 city, again it's all how you drive it. all the functions of the
ford work aside from the ac (it does not have a compressor but could be
added for the right $$$) . The truck does have a salvage flood title as that
is how I acquired the truck. it is not a powerhouse like a cummins but gets
the mileage of a modern tdi. with 4x4. One of a kind. would be interested in
trade for a nice, not rusted out powerstroke 95 and up or cummins or dmax.
or CASH. Please post me a pick of your trade or intentions in your email. As
you can imagine a lot of people are interested but have no money or trade.

The good thing about Diesels is they will keep running as long as they are
getting air and fuel. As far as it being locked up - if it had locked up
when in gear you'd have noticed - it would have tried to slow you down *BIG*
time. It likely would not have occurred slowly - an engine locking up
generally will do so pretty quickly giving little warning - but the oil
pressure and temperature would have would have moved away from Normal. You
said you didn't check them but perhaps you glanced their way and didn't see
anything strange so paid them no attention?

Losing power? Could be a engine locking up - but I believe you'd have seen a
rising temp if a bearing was seizing (BTDT) - and the battery would still
turn it over unless it welded itself to the crank pretty quickly - requiring
a bit of heat.

When you were waiting for a ride to work you tried to restart it - did you
notice the gauges being out of Normal at that point? They would still have
had a pretty accurate reading at that point.

The starter not disengaging as suggested sounds pretty good to me...

Has the engine given any indication in the past that there might be a
mechanical problem? Loud bearings (I know, hard to know on a diesel) ;-)
running hot? Hard to start when hot (the bearings like to expand and
squeeze the crank when hot, slowing the cranking speed)? Anything out of
the ordinary?

Good luck - I hope it's something silly. IMO it's not a locked engine -

Bob,

Check for a seized accessory. A frozen alternator or waterpump (a/c or p/s pump
too, I'm sure) coupled with a tight belt
can stop the motor dead in its tracks just like you describe.

The m103 is known for this when the alternator seizes. Had the same happen to a
client with a '66 230sl a couple of
months back. No warning, the car simply stalled at a traffic light and acted as
if the motor were locked solid. Turned out
to be a seized waterpump.

Could power steering pump, alternator or AC compressor seize in such a
manner as to stall the engine. AC compressor and pulley on a '71 Chrysler
did this to me at 75 MPH on I-80 in Iowa (or is it I-84?) on a Sunday
afternoon in 1975. Suddenly, engine and everything quit; would not turn
with starter, etc. 10-year-old son saw that belt tried to slip slightly on
seized AC pulley when I tried starter; 'cut AC belt off with knife and drove
10 mi. to next town; new AC compressor, pulley, dryer next morning, and we
were on the way again.

I had a '69 220D engine act similarly a png time ago. It came out of a car
that was in a garage fire. I drove it about 10k - 15k miles, then on the way
to work one morning, it just acted like the throttle linkage came off,
except that it died when I put it in neutral. Couldn't crank it at all.
After sitting for about 20 minutes, it did start, had enough power to get
the last 2 miles to work, then froze solid.
The bearings were trashed. It had plenty of oil pressure, ans was not hot
when it died. I attributed it to the fire.

After sitting for about 20 minutes, it did start, had enough power to get

The bearings were trashed. It had plenty of oil pressure, ans was not hot

Did it make strange noises or just stop? One would think it the engine
was seizing there might be some unusual noises.

I was on the back of my brother's toilet-seat 90 when it
seized. No unusual noises at all, it just started slowing
down and then finally locked the rear wheel.

Something is seized, probably. Let's hope it's not the
engine proper!

I have to decide where to draw the line

The line may have been drawn, depending on how attached you are to it. How
is the body and the interior besides the bad rear seatback? Most 300D's of
similar age have tired front end components anyway. If you would be putting
it in the shop for the engine and transmission RR, add that in as well.
You may be able to find another 300D for the price of the engine, tranny and
the RR.

Kevin in Hillsboro, Oregon who really enjoyed the 3 '78 300D's also OCD
about acceleration! (we should be at 65 MPH by the time we hit that bump
