Word from the fuel stop that a friend gets his ag diesel for his farm equipment
is that the feds tacked a 20-25 cent per gallon tax on diesel, set to take
effect on 10/1. The price jumps around here were about that much around that
time, I'd expect that stations that haven't done the jump as of last night
haven't gotten their next shipment yet, haven't read the memo, and are in for
a shock.

Gary's right, this is going to DESTROY the economy. Especially when coupled
with higher energy costs due to the massive spike in the price of natural
gas.

Anyone think inflation will clear nine percent this year?

Just made a quick run from Pittsburgh to Northern VA over the weekend
(Linda's son got married) and saw diesel prices from a low of $2.799 to
a high of $3.599. None of the old rules applied. North Western VA used
to always be cheapest, but that's where several station were above
$3.409. Breezewood and Bedford PA are ALWAYS lower than the stations on
the PA Turnpike or in WVA, but this weekend the Sunoco stations on the
turnpike were $2.909 while the BP (usually least expensive) stations at
Breezewood and Bedford (and a couple in between) were $3.099. The
stations around Berkley Springs WVA were $2.899 to 3.199. Pittsburgh is
usually $0.10-0.20 more, but not this weekend. It's all really mixed up
and in flux.

Gas at Kum Go, the lower-priced of our two stations in town was $2.69

and filled up at $2.75 -- waited for the foam to die down enough to put one
last quarter's worth into the tank. The place I filled up lags Kum Go by a
day in prices, so who knows what it will be there tomorrow!

Word from the fuel stop that a friend gets his ag diesel for his farm equipment
is that the feds tacked a 20-25 cent per gallon tax on diesel, set to take
effect on 10/1. The price jumps around here were about that much around that

time, I'd expect that stations that haven't done the jump as of last night
haven't gotten their next shipment yet, haven't read the memo, and are in for
a shock.

The Federal 24.4 cent tax on diesel was set to expire on 10/01/05 - so
the imposition of a $0.244 tax would make it exactly what it was on
09/30/05! NO CHANGE.

Thanks for the info, Marshall. We now return you to your regularly scheduled

Kevin typed (I'm sure ending his sentence in a preposition was an
oversight):

Actually, In-N-Out is one of the few fast food places I'll stop at.

#1, Animal Style, Dr. Pepper.

They have very polite employees...AND THEY COUNT YOUR CHANGE BACK!

As far as diesel prices are concerned here in AZ, I saw a jump from $2.859
to $3.119 while I worked the night shift at the old nuc plant. Thank
goodness I filled up with $2.839 bio on Thursday. I hope it's still $2.839
tomorrow when I go in town.

Kevin mentioned:

I'll have to keep in mind that bio is cheaper than dino in AZ and carry a
spare set of filters. I'll be in Scottsdale the 16th through the 18th of
this month for work. Haven't decided if I am going to take 40 or 10 yet.

I believe 40 is not as desolate a drive as 10 is.
The weather should be cooled off a tad by then.
It's true bio is cheaper out here right now but the BIG drawback is there is
only ONE stinkin' bio pump in this crazy town...and it is in downtown
Phoenix.

I've driven both, though the time I was on I-40 was a drive through Arizona,
not a trip to Phoenix, so I'm not familiar with the various ways of getting
from I-40 to Phoenix. The drive on I-10 was to Phoenix, and was in a police
interceptor crown victoria. Needless to say, the hills on I-10 weren't a
problem, and neither were people going slow in the #1 lane :)
