A friends Dell P6754yPC desktop computer won't connect to the
internet. I fixed the TCP/IP but now Window7 says the rj45 modem is
bad (the wireless modem works okay). There's a lot of lightning in
this area that often takes out internal modems.

It is surprising that the lightning would take out the network interface
card (NIC) on a computer instead of the DSL modem.

Does this friend have the proper surge arresting stuff?

Since the rj45 modem is part of the motherboard, I'm wondering if I can
 simply use an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter - PCI - 1 x RJ-45 -
10/100/1000Base-T - Internal modem or equivalent? This computer is
 connected to a DSL modem.

What model is the NIC you intend on using? I'll need that to see what
kind of connector it has.

1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card
 3 PCI Express x1 slots
1 PCI Express x1 minicard slot

 Modem description says:

  Compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 full-height and low-profile PCI
 Express slots

From this, it appears that plugging the modem in one of the 3 PCI Express
x1 slots would work. From your descriptions, though, I'm not entirely
convinced.

Gerry:
Lightning transients (not true lightning strikes) do strange things.
Sometimes the DSL modem is damaged; other times it only has to be reset;
other times it will blow the fuses in the surge suppressor if the RJ11 line
is fused.

Does this friend have the proper surge arresting stuff?

Sounds like you had something between a lightning strike and a transient
lightning strike. Around here, which is one of the two lightning capitals
of the world (a place in South Africa is the other), we call it a transient
strike if there are no burn marks on the damaged appliances or wiring, and a
strike if there are. The single strike we had showed many burn marks and a
destroyed plastic conduit elbow.

You want to use the Intel EXPI9301CT NIC. It has a PCIe x1 connector,
which will mate with the PCIe x1 slots in your motherboard.

It comes in two flavors,

Retail (with manual and registration card)
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Intel-Gigabit-CT-Desktop-Adapter-network-adapter/1532137.aspx
$39.99

Bulk packaged (board only)
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Intel-Gigabit-CT-Desktop-Adapter-network-adapter/1732523.aspx
$34.99

The other choices on the page you cited either have edge connectors that
won't fit or are MUCH more expensive than you need or both.
