I have been in Allentown, PA since Saturday; when the news folks started talking up the Sunday storm I was worried about driving home (later today). We got an inch or two, the kids saw some snow blowing and threw some snowballs. A "nice" snow, but somewhat cooler than I prefer. :) Interestingly many of the city roads still aren't cleared from Saturday morning, and the talk on the streets was that folks were glad it wasn't worse here Sunday night because "we just aren't prepared like they are up north" - almost exactly the same conversation I hear when it doesn't snow in NC. Given that, I did think it odd that almost every parking lot was cleared by of the Sunday night snow by early Monday morning. I observe that some people here cannot drive in any weather, but maybe those are the New Yorkers. It was reasonably pleasant on the unscraped roads, and I didn't hit any interesting ice in the freezing or just above temps. I even went without a coat a couple of times. Hope you folks further north were indeed better prepared, and the rest of the week has been pleasant. Re: [MBZ] OT: Snowmageddon ----> 2015 Blizzard Bust
I'm always amused by people who howl about the accuracy of weather forecasting. Weather is chaotic and unpredictable by nature, we have very good weather forecasting considering the number of variables involved and the complexity of weather itself. It wasn't all that long ago that all the data used was collected by ground observers and a few ballon sondes sent up to transmit wind speeds and temperatures. Today we have doppler sattelite data for all sorts of things, including moisture content in the air at various heights, temperatures, wind speeds, and etc. And we can process all that data in just about real time. However, even with supercomputers, it is IMPOSSIBLE to determine just exactly when and where rain will become snow, exactly where the snow will change from wet to dry, and exactly what the temperatures will be. What do you want, silence until the snow starts? Come on, all weather forecasts are speculative, it's the nature of chaotic systems, and they were pretty much on the nose with this one. Storm ended up a bit smaller (less than 50 miles smaller) and a few miles further off-shore than the models predicted, but what if they'd said it was just gonna snow and blow a bit and the storm went that 50 miles inland with no warning? How many people would have spent three days stuck in a car on the expressway and frozen to death. It's not funny, I've been stuck in heavy snow (a breakdown, but stuck none the less). I'd greatly prefer over-cautions warnings to freezing to death stuck in drifting snow on the expressway, and so far there are no deaths associated with this storm, at least not that I've heard. Far better safe than sorry. I think the government made the right choice. People will make the stupidest choices and then get pissed when the government won't bail them out. We're off the western edge of it, I went out around lunch and had 8-10" depending on where I measured. I made a video which should be ready in an hour or so. We've ended up with a foot or just a bit more I think. I got two of the snowmobiles out. My '79 Polaris wasn't running on the PTO side, I cleaned the points but I think that I flooded it. I need to pull the plugs and crank it a few times to dry them. The '91 Arctic Cat worked out fantastically, I was interested in how it would do in the powder and it climbed right up just like I'd want it to. Ah, come on - cut them some slack. These days the "authorities" cannot win. If they ignore it all and let people go about their business, then there will be massive complaints that the poor idiots were not protected by their government officials, and poor cops and firemen will have to go out and try to rescue them as some risk to themselves. If they ask people to stay home where it should be fairly safe, then people complain if the weather is not as bad as it might have been. It is not the end of the world if one gets a "snow day" to stay home and unwind a bit. I could use one about now.
