Re: [MBZ] Oil-thirsty E320

2023-10-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie's Golf calls for either 5w30 or 5w40. With 5w30 it consumes oil like
crazy, to the point I was generally worried, like a quart in 1000 miles.

With 5w40 it barely uses any, like a quart and a half in 10,000 miles.

Weird...

What weight oil are you running in it?

I ask because my youngest son’s 2002 E320, which is approaching 150k, having
purchased it around 90k, was consuming an inordinate amount of oil. He drove it
from Flagstaff to Denver last summer and had to top it off several times on the
trip.

I did some checking with people who are smarter than me on these cars and was
told that high oil consumption is common as they age - if you use the
recommended 0W-40. I fully expected to have to reseal the breather system on
the car as this part of the engine tends to get leaky and clogged up over time.

He had an oil change due last time I was out there, and so we changed to 15W-50.

Hasn’t used a drop since. He’s about 1,000 miles into the last oil change and
hasn’t had to top it off yet.

My '04 E500 (M113) used about a quart between changes; I've only changed oil
once since I owned it. I used 5W40 M1; the 0W40 was not available at WalMart
here. I consider that level of oil use to be comparable to other cars I've
owned.
