Assuming you are talking about the bolts from the axle to the
Diff. Those are not hex head. They take a special socket. If you
are committed to using new bolts, (not a bad idea) then put 7 to 10
inch vicegrips on them and get them started. BTDT! I had some that
had evidently been out and then put back with permanent loctite. I
ended up beating on the vicegrips to get them out. I think they are
like the OM 60x headbolts only opposite. I think that was called a
triple square head.

You CAN do it yourself! no need to wimp out.

I doubt it, the 190D axles bolt to a flange that then runs into the
diff. I don't think any appreciable amount of heat builds up at the
axle bolts. I thought about applying some heat but its tough as the
CV is right there and I don't want to damage the boot. Its also no
fun lying on your back in the driveway with a torch...

I will spec NEW hardware for reassembly.

After a morning like that, you were brave to pick up an axe. hee hee.

If the 190 is on the road, I wonder if driving it a bit, and
allowing some heat sink in the diff would make getting those bolts
out any easier?

You get those days you were better off staying in bed?

Went out to breakfast and then figured I'd hit the ground running on
the 190D since the rain quit.

Turns out the bolts are just 10mm heads. Stripped the first one
pretty good right off the bat. Tried pounding a 9mm socket on and
just split the socket. Got two others started and found somebody had
already stripped one on the other side.

Figured maybe I'd try pulling the diff first, see if I could get the
axles off out of the car. Thats when I found out my metric wrench
set doesn't have 15mm so getting the driveshaft off is going to be big fun.

Okay screw that job, let my Indy have it. Pick everything up, clean
the water out of two of my studded snows (why did 2 have water and
the other two didn't? I dunno, all were bagged, no tears in the
bags.) toss all 4 in the trunk of the 240D, off to Wal-Mart. Kid
says its a 2 1/2 hour wait, theres only 2 guys working. Great...

So I came home and cut some wood and now I'm gonna take a nap.

It's a reverse triple square? You can find those at most auto zoos. I
have a set. I think they fell under GM tools. Had to have them for my VW

They are normal hex heads, I promise, I wasn't even drinking when I tried 'em.

Triple square are inset like allen bolts these are NOT inset, they're normal
hex head but they're already chewed up.
I tried vice grips on them already, the problem I had was getting enough of the
vice grip on to bite but not tearing up the CV boot at the same time. Theres
not any extra space there...

I don't have time now to work on it and its dark by the time I get home, cold
too, 22F this morning. Too cold to lie on my back in the driveway...

[MBZ] Sheesh

2008-10-03 Thread Curt Raymond
A couple months ago when I went to Iowa I left the lights on on my 190D. 2 days
later you can imagine how dead the battery was.

Yesterday when I returned from Burbank I realized I'd left the dome light on.
As my grandfather would have said Jumpin Jesus, bald headed Christ.

So now I know that the battery in my 190D is good enough to leave the dome
light on for nearly 4 days and still start the car. Not with any extra mind you
but the car did indeed start.

Yeah battery life is definately shortened I'm sure. Worst part is the battery
isn't even a year old.
