Does this mean the quality of Craftsman parts is improving?

About 10 years ago there was a night and day difference between Snap On and
Craftsman.

It's a special line of Craftsman, where a single 1/2 ratchet costs $80 instead
of getting a 155pc set of 1/4-3/8-1/2 for $150 or on sale for $80.

The regular Craftsman stuff, what I bought a few years ago isn't as nice as what

Bummer.

I buy Snap On for anything I use regularly that's less than 1-1/2.

Snap On 5-27 mm just fits better, better ratchets, and eBay has a steady
supply of Snap On tools. What's the cost of bloody knuckles because the
Craftsman 27 mm keeps falling off the crank damper?

If I'm in a hurry I buy direct, they don't charge shipping.

For hand tools I don't use regularly I may get them from Harbor Freight.

[MBZ] Speaking of batteries

2013-05-30 Thread Rich Thomas
I took the old battery out of the boy's (to be the girl's) SD and took
it to Interstate to swap it, as it was getting a bit weak and not
holding a charge. It was an 85 and turned out to be from June 2007
(71 months). So I ask the guy there if that meant I got some credit on
a new one. He goes off to check some mysterious book and a couple
minutes later comes back and says a swap with the credit will be
$158.something but a new one will be $154.something. I took a few
seconds to process that, and asked him why with a credit will be more
than buying it outright, and he proceeds to explain to me that the
credit price is more than the new price because when that battery was
new it was more than the new one, and the credit on it made it more than
a new one now. Huh, WTF??? So I asked him to explain that again, and
he goes through the same thing, but this time less comprehensible. He
apparently, perfectly understood the rationale for this apparent
contradiction but was not able to explain it to such a simpleton as me.

So the battery is sitting there on the counter, he had gone to get it
when I said I needed a swap, so I asked him if that same battery, that
one right there, had 2 different prices depending on whether I had one
to swap for it, then he tells me that he is giving me $10 off the new
price so that is why it is less than the swap price. So I say, OK let's
say that battery right there is new, and I will pay the new price for
it. He says OK and proceeds to write it up, which for more reasons
unclear, took like 5 minutes and involved 3 different machines in
different places at the counter.

I am plagued by idiots... or maybe I am an idiot and just do not fit

Re: [MBZ] Speaking of batteries

2013-05-30 Thread Dieselhead
I think part of the problem is the franchisee you went to. they make
up their own rules. the local one takes 3 people, 2 computers and
15-20 minutes to print an invoice to a pack of AA batteries.

Interstate battery joints are ffranchises. The local one told me it
would take 2-3 days to get a small battery (similar to a video
camera) from the Dist center 30 miles away. I asked them to make
arrangements so I could pick it up at the Dist center. we can't do
that Bla bla. Face to face. So I called the Corp 800 number and
explained that I needed this battery NOW. They made arrangements to
pick it up at the DIst center. I had also asked the franchise if
another store within 50 miles that has this battery. they said they
could not tell me (or would not bother to look) We called around and
found one at another store.

Later that day I was by the franchise store, so I went in and told
them I WAS picking up a battery at the dist center, and also buying
one at another store. I told them it was THEIR job to do that work
and I didn't appreciate having to do THEIR work for them.

I am not impressed with interstate at all. I will buy from oreally
or advance. They test the battery and exchange if it is bad. No
hassle. Interstate hassle is like snears.

So the battery is sitting there on the counter, he had gone to get it

price so that is why it is less than the swap price. So I say, OK
let's say that battery right there is new, and I will pay the new

Last time I dealt with Sears, I took a dead battery in, the guy said he

an hour or more. I told him the thing was like 4 years old, would not
hold a charge, it was dead gimme another one. We go round and round on
it he won't concede. So I leave it, go do some other errands, get
lunch, whatever, come back he tells me it is dead and won't hold a
charge. Wow, ya think? So then it takes forever to buy another one,
get some credit etc. The whole ordeal ends up taking half a day. No,
that was the next to last time, the last time I went in with a dead
battery (I think it was the one from the next to last time) and the guy
says OK I'll get you another one, go inside I'll be right there. So
like 20min later the guy is nowhere to be found, he finally comes in and
has to deal with some other guy who has a warranty issue on a newish
car, he takes like 10min to explain to the guy he has to take it to a
dealer, not Sears, to get the warranty aspect dealt with. Then again it
takes like 15 min and 2 cash registers to print out a battery receipt.
The whole time I was in there I think I saw like 3 people in the store.

You would think these battery places are selling some kind of nuclear
weapons grade batteries that need export controls and background checks
or something. You can buy a gun quicker than a battery. (I threw that
in there for Andrew!)

For most stuff the Harbor Freight tools are as good or better quality too.

As long as there are no moving parts, I don't trust Harbor Freight tools that
have moving parts.

Did I post on here how frustrated I got with Crapsman ratchets? I had 3 (1/2,
3/8 and 1/4) that wouldn't ratchet... I used a Harbor Freight circlip remover
to take one apart and discovered NO LUBRICANT.
Well cheez-whiz, wonder why they don't ratchet. I filled 'em with white lithium
grease and they were good. Of course that was stupid as now (2 years later)
they're all 3 dry again. Still its no big deal to take 'em apart and fix 'em
with better quality grease.

Pretty much every crapsman tool can be replaced with two for the same money
at Harbor Freight. End up with a no hassle warranty and money left over
for a cold one.

Some Horror Fright power tools are good. I bought a right angle grinder for $8
and have used it hard. It still works great.

The premium line of Cman ratchets are excellent and USA made but quite pricey.

I have a bunch of Crapsman ratchets, and all are in good shape.

It has been my experience that if you take a ratchet in for replacement, unless
there is something physically wrong with it, like a broken handle, they used to
give you a rebuilt kit of sorts, with new innards.

5 minutes with a snap ring pliers and they're good as new.

The Walmart battery book does list MB diesels, however the group 49
battery is rarely stocked, and some Walmarts don't want to order them
because they have to order them in lots and don't have the storage
for the extras. This has been my experience, anyway, and I'm sure
the larger stores wouldn't have a problem.
