I think Jamie is right. My '85 190D had some weird shifter issues, it's been a long time but I remember not being able to find reverse reliably and having to push it out of a couple parking spaces. New shifter bushings fixed it. -Curt On Monday, May 10, 2021, 9:19:32 PM EDT, Jaime

What Jaime said. I never had one get that bad, but I did replace a bunch of those bushings over the years --- On Mon, May 10, 2021 at 8:19 PM Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > HI John, > Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of >

Agreed, I had a Vanagon with a manual and it was hard to find the gears when I first got it. Replacing all the bushings and following the service manual procedure to adjust the linkage made a world of difference. Allan Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes writes: > HI John, > Most likely the bushings

Happened to my 280SE 3.5 coupe as the tech was backing out of the shop. Lost all control. As it occurred at the end of the day and meant they had to keep the car another day, it was very embarrassing. On Mon, May 10, 2021 at 9:19 PM Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote:

HI John, Most likely the bushings on each end of the shift rods (there are three of them, so 6 bushings) are probably gone. This causes the levers on the shifter to end up in odd places and occasionally jam. There are also bushing in the shifter itself that can contribute to the problem. Best

Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse? Yeah, unless the mechanism is worn (as you suspect). Or is it push down? I think the 4-sp and 5-sp trannies differ in this area. Once I'd gone through the Frankenheap's shifter

In the meantime, does it help if you push toward the ground as you move it into first? I've started doing that after a couple grinds. I'm not sure if my bushing is warn, or if I just had a tendency to lift up slightly upon seleting first gear. Brian 83 240D On 7/11/06, John Ingram [EMAIL

If you take the shifter out, you'll probably find that the collar on the plastic bushing has broken partially or completely off. A new bushing ordered from Germany will probably solve the problem. Meade Dillon [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent me diagrams and parts numbers which were invaluable in
