I think Jamie is right. My '85 190D had some weird shifter issues, it's been a
long time but I remember not being able to find reverse reliably and having to
push it out of a couple parking spaces. New shifter bushings fixed it.

Agreed, I had a Vanagon with a manual and it was hard to find the gears
when I first got it. Replacing all the bushings and following the
service manual procedure to adjust the linkage made a world of
difference.

Happened to my 280SE 3.5 coupe as the tech was backing out of the shop.
Lost all control. As it occurred at the end of the day and meant they had
to keep the car another day, it was very embarrassing.

In the meantime, does it help if you push toward the ground as you move it
into first? I've started doing that after a couple grinds. I'm not sure if
my bushing is warn, or if I just had a tendency to lift up slightly upon
seleting first gear.

If you take the shifter out, you'll probably find that the collar on the
plastic bushing has broken partially or completely off. A new bushing
ordered from Germany will probably solve the problem.
