Re: [MBZ] 300SDL oil cooler lines

2018-06-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Take a set off one of yer junkers, cut the ferrules, and replace the
hoses with new hose. Then replace. It will probably cost you all of
$20 or $30.

Alternatively, you could by enough hose (probably 6 ft or so) and 8
clamps and do the job on the car. That way you don't have to disturb
the nuts at the oil cooler or at the oil filter.

Some of the solid sheet metal ones are good, some are as strong as Campbell's

Re: [MBZ] 300sdl ac compressor

2017-03-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I was able to take mine apart without any special tools other than snap ring
pliers.

It's really, really easy to reseal these.

And shame on you, Kaleb - how can you have all that stuff and not have at least
one pair of snap ring pliers??

Peter, like I said, 86 and later diesel 126s all used the same radiator...
confirmed in the EPC last night. Plus I have a 91 350SDL in my driveway
with the downflow radiator!

Kaleb, I'd but this if I were you:

They're hard to find anywhere in stock and the price is right. They're
ugly, but they work.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL radiator

2017-02-23 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
86-87 300SDL and 90-91 350SDL radiators are the same. Both use A 126 500
53 03 (which replaced A126 500 27 03).

Someone (incorrectly) told me that it was possible to install a cross flow
radiator ( from a diesel 124 A124 500 00 02). I did some heavy research
into this (I bought one) and found that its simply impossible without major
modification to the car. Its simply not practical. Getting the right
hoses for the coolant and transmission cooler were possible with all MB
parts, but getting the radiator in place wasn't possible. The lower mounts
are in a different place, requiring major modifications, but the radiator
also didn't fit in terms of width from what I remember.

I ended up returning all the parts and going with the NOS Behr I found.

A radiator from a later model will fit, but you need to replace the upper and
lower radiator supports -- it's the same as the radiator in the 87 300D.

My brother went through this a couple years ago, ended up having a custom upper
tank made since he'd broken the upper hose nipple off.

Highly doubt it's got a plugged fuel tank strainer. Will check for air leaks. I
have not checked timing or chain stretch but I can say car has plenty of power,
just the miss at idle.

Make sure you don't have an air leak in the suction side of the lift pump
(plastic filter and fuel pre-heater). Air getting in will cause all sorts of
idle problems and eventually hard starts.

should I have an A/C specialist do this testing work, or a garage that

gave me my latest input does not have the specialized A/C. equipment

Ralph,

What you need is a shop that has the wiring diagrams for your car, and as
Dan said a DC Voltmeter, and then the skill to combine both in order to
perform some tests and determine the problem.

An MB (or European) specialist should be faster (less shop time, maybe less
$$$) because they already would be aware of KLIMA relay issues and how to
test the typical failure modes.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL A/C electrical problem

2016-12-08 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is nothing specialized about the system on this car that would require
unique or unusual equipment. Any come tent AC shop can work on it if they are
willing.

If this is for your SDL then there is no evaporator cutoff switch as I
previously described - that would be present in your W123 or a Gen I W126.

As others have suggested, I'm betting your KLIMA relay is faulty, as this would
be a pretty typical failure for a car of this vintage. There are some readily
available very simple diagnostic procedures to test for a faulty KLIMA that
require nothing more than a DC voltmeter.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL A/C electrical problem

2016-12-08 Thread Ralph,'84TD via Mercedes
It is the SDL car, thanks for the input.  My next question is simpler;  should
I have an A/C specialist do this testing work, or a garage that works mainly on
European Vehicles?  I have both in the area. The garage that gave me my latest
input does not have the specialized A/C. equipment needed, but he did determine
that the wiring was done incorrectly and fixed that for me first.I was advised
that the compressor did have sufficient refrigeration to actually run, but just
wasn't, and that seems to fit into the klima issue.  Thanks

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL A/C electrical problem

2016-12-07 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

Pretty easy, acutally.

Check for voltage at the low pressure switch and a ground on one side
-- the PBCU grounds the signal from the Klima relay to switch the
compressor on.

If you have voltage and a ground, the relay is bad (usually cracked
solder on the actual relay) OR the low pressure switch is open.

If you have no voltage, the KLIMA has disconnected the compressor for
some reason.

If you have voltage on one wire and a ground on the other, short the
wires. If the compressor engages, the low pressure switch is bad.

Pretty much sums it up, it's not that hard. Problem today with shops
is that everything is digital and no one knows how to troubleshoot a
system that is not self-diagnostic.

It's a fool's errand to repair a blower motor in a W123. Simply buy a used

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL A/C electrical problem

2016-12-07 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Ralph,

Since they were poking around in the vicinity of the heater box where your
blower motor is located, I would take a look at the compressor cut out switch
that's located on the heater box. It's a thermal switch with a capillary tube
that extends into the heater/evaporator box.

If you look under the passenger side dash where your blower motor is located,
just look to the left and you'll see a couple of wires going to what appears to
be a block of fuzzy insulation like material.

You can jumper or short these wires together to see if your compressor will
engage. It's in series with the low pressure switch, I believe, so you'll need
to be sure you have a fully charged system.

2016-12-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
+1 Max beat me to it, and said it well. On my cars, KLIMA has always
been the failure. There is a place in FL who sells rebuilt Klima
relays. You can pull the klime and jump two terminals in the socket to
test if this is the problem. I use 12 ga solid copper house wire for
making the jumper.

I've had 7 or so Klima equipped cars. If the refrigerant has not leaked
out, the problem has always been the KLIMA relay. Herr Doktor never had
a Klima fail. Go figger!

Max Dillon via Mercedes
December 7, 2016 at 1:56 PM
Assuming this is the SDL. Sounds like the serpentine belt saving
feature, which cuts the compressor clutch power signal, is the issue.

In the KLIMA relay, the circuitry compares the compressor speed (from
a sensor on the back of the compressor) to the engine speed, and if
they are too far apart, no power is supplied to the compressor clutch.

Could be bad KLIMA relay, bad AC compressor speed sensor, bad
tachometer speed sensor, bad wiring, bad fuse, bad HVAC push-button
controller unit, bad engine control computer (tach signal goes through
computer for distro to tachometer and KLIMA relay), bad clutch. All
need to be tested and the problem(s) found and fixed.

after the wires were replaced in reverse. Had this fixed and now I
have trouble with my compressor not kicking in. Had it checked out,
but the garage cannot find what is causing the problem. They tell me
I have power at the fuse, but nothing at the compressor. There is
sufficient pressure at the compressor to have it run, but it is not
receiving any power. This garage cannot fix it. Referred me to an
A/C specialist. I thought that perhaps someone in this forum might
have an idea on where to look for this problem. I feel I should go to
a garage that specializes in foreign cars like the M.B.

At most sales like this, auctions, and the charity auction things they are
usually frequented by people who know nothing about mb and they bid up the
thing they are with all these 10s of thousands of dollars and they are not, so
they think they get a good deal. I saw a 82 300sd with a bad transmission sell
for over $4k several years ago for example.

You're thinking the white stuff inside is mold?

It is on the outside, too, and some of the other items, like 26 and 54.

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL in Atlanta

2016-02-20 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
They all differ. Most common seems to be just make an offer and they take
it. Its essentially a garage/yard sale. Some sales take bids on paper and
sell to the highest at the end. I lost a 1996 Saab 2 stroke by about $50
with this process once: Very frustrating.

I'd contact the sale people and try to see and buy in advance.

2016-02-20 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
This car appears to be covered in mold which is not good for the interior or
the exterior underneath. Also, I thought the SDL was only made in 86 and 87 in
the 300, then it went to the 350 later. Seems like there are unanswered
questions about this car. If it's really badged correctly, then it's an 86 or
87 and with only 112K miles, it's been sitting a lot which isn't good for
diesels. Still...might make a good project car.
Just sayin..

In 30+ years of driving a variety of Mercedes diesels (listed below), I
have yet to replace a main radiator hose - upper or lower. They simply
last FOREVER.

1976 W115 300D
1980 W123 300D
1983 300TD x 2
1985 300TD

The '85 has a hairline crack and slow coolant leak from the lower plastic
portion of the radiator. My tech says not to take my spare used radiator
to a rad shop for testing, as they might somehow screw it up. Opinions?

BTW yesterday on my FB feed I got an advert for URO parts for Mercedes.
It was touting how great they were, etc.

Autohaus regularly lists parts they don't actually have. I waited a month for
them to admit they didn't actually have and weren't going to get a radiator for
my '84 190D.
Rusty got me one the very next day.
With Autohaus I always call and ask the person on the phone to actually put his
or her hand on the item so I know they've really got it and it was made by who
they said it was made by. They tried to sell me a "Genuine Mercedes" lower
radiator hose for that same 190D. It turned out to be URO, no MB Star, I didn't
buy it...

That $729 custom all aluminum job looks like the bee's knees, but if he doesn't
want to spend that much, it looks like the Nissens is available again.
Here's the link Curly provided last week.

Re: [MBZ] 300sdl overheating: Peter

2015-12-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have purchased from Autohaus a few times, but made sure the parts were what
they specified brand-wise. I have seen a number of times over on the BenzWorld
forums where they have done the URO swap and people were pissed. Seems like
they are doing a better job identifying the source now.

My beef with Autohaus is their "in stock ships today (or no later than
tomorrow)" claims. I had a couple of instances where they didn't ship until the
next day on a part I needed ASAP and paid for expedited shipping. The second
time I did it I called and tried to pin them down. Seems that my part was at a
"remote warehouse" and wouldn't ship until the next day.

This means they're probably using someone to drop ship stuff for them like
everyone else.

I will say they do a good job with little fiddly stuff that MB rapes you on,
like copper washers for valve cover bolts or oil tube O rings.

Ron:

I believe the later models used the same radiator as the 87 W124, but
you have to change the lower radiator support and get the transmission
cooler lines as it's a side flow, not a downflow.

There is an aftermarket radiator available (expensive), and and custom
radiator shop can make one for you, also expensive, but you can get it
to fit that way.

Just buy an SDL radiator. Among others, autohauseaz.com has them for
around $200. If you want a used one, I can get you a used one.

Must still be a decent demand for radiators for cars nearly 30 years
old.

I still think the W126 is about the best car Benz ever made,
especially the diesel.
